Re: Q800 Confusion

2002-08-19 Thread David V. Pierce

I am trying to bring my old Q800 up to operating condition. Previously
 it
was used for a recording studio (Pro Tools) running on 48MB RAN OS
 7.5.1 --
it sat for a number of years, but fired up with no problem.

It has a stock HD and came with a Toshiba CD-ROM (X340--probably not a
 full
product id, but pretty much close). It is managed by CD Toolkit 1.5.2.

If I leave CD Toolkit on, I get a start-up message from CD Toolkit
 saying
something to the effect that ...CD Toolkit has a problem with the way
 the
CD was masteredproblems at the end of the data... Underneath that
 is
the warning that this disk cannot be read by this MacIntosh.

Any thoughts or ideas? All help will be appreciated.

My first impulses are that your CD-ROM Toolkit extensions are screwed up
somehow, and that the CD-ROM isn't compatible with the version of
AppleCD that 7.5.3 installs.

Try http://www.macdrivermuseum.com/disk.shtml to download slightly newer
versions of the AppleCD driver that should stand a pretty good chance of
working with your CD-ROM.

Good luck,

Well, I use a Performa 575 with iCab and it is sometimes slow, but it is
definitely not a waste of time.

I wonder where the limitations really are. I have a 56k modem. Most of the
time I run it at 33.6 because I can't stay connected at faster speeds. I
have wondered about DSL, but it seems like on most web sites there are
bursts of modem activity, followed by 'long' pauses while the computer
figures out how to render the page. I can see how a faster connection would
make a difference on sustained transfers, but how much would it help for
typical browsing?

There are things that I haven't been able to do (at least not well). These
are low priority for me, but I have visited sites that required them and I
was curious. Sometimes it's hard to find a 68k version and even when you
do, the standard that sites are using has superceded it. One example is
Apple's Quicktime movie trailer page.

Other examples include:
Windows Media Player
Shockwave
Real Player Audio

Like so many things computer related, whether or not you will be happy
surfing with a 68k, depends on what you plan do with it, what your
expectations are,
and your tolerance for experimenting. For me, the fun in using a 68k is
seeing just how far I can get with it.

Re: Miro Prisma 16GX Nubus video board - anyone knows?

2002-08-19 Thread Peter Heinemann

Steff,
that would be very kind of you to send me this installer - maybe the card
will work with it.

I also zapped the P-Ram which fixes such problems sometimes, but this time
it did not help.

Thank you again ^_^

I could send you the Miro Prisma 1152GX Installer. Do you want to try
 with this one?

 Steff
 ORIGINAL MESSAGE:
Hello,
recently, I got a Miro Prisma 16 GX Nubus video card in my hand, a pretty
costly piece back in 1994 when it was manufactured. I put it in several
nubus macs (Q800, Q840, PM8100), but the screen remains black and so I guess
that it is waiting for a driver or a secret keystroke on startup. I did a
search on the net without success and also Miro (a German firm near
Braunschweig) does not offer any information.

Does anyone have the drivers or knows where to get them?

The label on the surface of the card reads:

PRISMA GX16
Vers. 2.1
Jan.13.1994

Well, thanks in advance for any hint.
-Peter

2002-08-19 Thread Mark Benson

Eh, I've used my 68ks for browsing, and it's not a waste of time. It does
require patience, but it's far from a waste of time. It's quite tolerable
on my my 640CD and Quadra 840AV.

Using iCab it's positively gratifying, I have browsed Apple's own
website using iCab on a 50Mhz accelerated SE/30 before now and, even
if it is in Black and White, it has a definite cool factor :).

I can say that with iCab and a 68040 powered Quadra or LC Mac it's a
very useful thing. I don't personally browse on 68ks as I have a
PowerMac 7500 (w/ 604e/200) and an iBook 300Mhz going 24/7 but I know
it can be done. Just avoid Netscape.

660AV

2002-08-19 Thread Terry Claire Hart

Hello. We were given a Centris 660 AV. The CPU powered on and the monitor
powered on, but nothing appeared on the monitor. So we connected the CPU to
a 610's monitor and the 610 to the 660's monitor. The 660 CPU works just
fine with the 610 monitor, but the 660 monitor still has a dark screen.
However, that cable designed to connect the 660 system is some monster
cable. I'm wondering if we're not connecting it right. Any advice?

Having the capability to connect that 660 AV to our TV would really be nice
for our journalism class.

Thanks,
Claire

Trying to recall right offhand if this is one of the ones that does that
with a bad PRAM battery... *shrug* Reasonably cheap to check, in any
case... even without buying a new battery... turn off and *immediately*
back on - basically double click the power button and see if it works!

Re: 660 AV

2002-08-19 Thread David Pierce

I just posted a request for help with a 660 AV. Two hours after
reconnecting the 660 components, we realized it was still on. My son turned
the CPU off and then on again, and voila! the image appeared. So at the
moment it works, but why would this have made it work?

Definitely replace the PRAM battery.

One more question about the 660 AV (it won't be the last, I'm sure) - the
interrupt switch (is that what it's called) that's on the back of the 610
isn't on the 660. How do you restart if it crashes?

It's called the Three-Fingered Salute. Hold down the Command (Apple) Key,
the Control Key, and the Power Key at the same time.

I think the power switch on the front of the 660 will also suffice tyo turn
it off and on again.

Re: 660 AV (PRAM info)

I'm not sure of this, but quickly turning your mac on
and off again gives your 660 enough power to allow it
to boot properly. It is also an indication that your
system clock and parameter ram (PRAM) battery is no
longer functioning. You most likely need another one.

I looked in the faq and spotted the section you need,
see sections 2.5.2 and 2.5.3:
http://macfaq.org/hardware/logicboard.shtml

I haven't had to change these before, but I'm sure the
list can point you to perhaps even better resources.
These small batteries reside inside your system's
motherboard. Fortunately, I remeber the pizza-box
styled case is a very easy one to open. But please get
some assistance with it if you're not technical!

If you are technical, google also came up with a page
that looks at the pram in some detail (just scroll
down the site); the link on this page shows you actual
photos inside a quadra 610/660av (along with a few
others ... the 660's ones are almost at the end)

http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh/
http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh/early.shtml

(the first is the main subject page, the 2nd the
photos) the faq probably can offer

hope that helps and good luck! :)
