put this extension which was marked as being an 8.1 file onto the 8.0 disc

You mentioned earlier that you just need some way to get your NEC 3x
cdrom drive to work.

You need the NEC 3x drivers. You don't have these?

I have an external 3x NEC CD ROM and this works fine on 8.1 and with
the NEC drivers installed onto a boot floppy, so I am able to
reinstall or update (or downdate) software from CD ROM in this way.

Re: LC 630 / CD Rom replacement.

2003-01-29 Thread Stuart Saunders
Thanks E McCann, the pickle, Mark for your help,
Following your advice I checked at a new computer recycler on the Gold
Coast. Surprised to find he had a new looking CD Rom, same vintage as
the 630, so I picked it up for 15 $ Aus. Will get back to office on
Monday and try it.

Thanks again,

 Not really :)

You are better off, if you want a CD-ROM only, replacing it with
another Apple badged unit. This will ensure maximum compatibility and
also that you can boot from the CD drive. It also better ensures the
drive will fit the 630 (see below). Stripped Apple SCSI units are
pretty easy to find on LEM Swap and places like that.

Will the 630 recognise a CD RW?

 Yep, quite nicely.

Yes, using Toast 4.1.2 or earlier. It's not really worth going much
 faster than 4x CD-R though as the 68k probably can't manage a CD-R much
faster. My 7300/200 struggled to write to a FireWire CD-RW at more than
12x, but that might well have been the FW card that sucked :).

 Any precautions?

They can be a bit tricky to get out, but they're not too bad.

You have to be *very* careful where the rear connectors are on the CD
drive for the 630. The CD drive attaches to the computer via a series
of edge connectors. These plug into the power, SCSI and Audio-out ports
of the CD-ROM drive. If they are more than a few mm either side of
where they should be it will not fit the machine without you modify the
 carrier inside the machine.

Q950s are so common here in Cupertino that the liquidators can't give them
away.

Of several dozen which were received by one of Sunnyvale's largest
liquidators, the infamous Weird Stuff Warehouse, a few were sold at the
initial asking price of $29.95, many more were sold at the reduced asking
price of $19.95, a few were sold at the final reduced price of $7.95, and the
remaining machines, about one-half of the total, were sent to the recycler.
Hell, the mobo or the PSU alone are worth $7.95. But, still no takers, hence
the trip to Quadra Motel ... the Mac goes in, but it doesn't come out.

On a lucky day, you can sometimes pick up a 9150/120, complete, for $45.

With these market realities, and the fact that a 950-sized machine costs
about $40, and up, to ship, it is doubtful that these machines will ever
fetch a premium.

Not that these aren't great machines. They are. It's just that there is an
oversupply of these, so there's nothing special about them.

Re: Quad collectability

2003-01-29 Thread Jamie Pruden
I don't know if there are actually production numbers available out there
in the www... I think the pickle is referring to:

1. Time of production
Most Quadra models were produced for business users for an extended
period of time, so models like the 950 and the 700 are pretty common.
Their prices reflect this...

2. Limited editions
Ferinstance... the Twentieth Anniversary Mac was only produced in small
numbers, so it's pretty nice if you can find one. I'm totally kicking
myself over that one... I worked at Claris about that time and could have
picked one up for a song.

3. Top of the line
Anytime you have a model at the top of the speed charts, it's probably at
least a little collectable.

4. Oddities
This is where you'll find the real cool ones. MacTV (built-in TV,) TAM
(upright form factor,) Quadra 605/LC475 (very small footprint,) and the
Cube (Ooohh factor) all fall into this category. These might be a
little more collectable than the run of the mill machines.

My Old stuff collection consists of:

SE/30 (128 MB RAM, 32-bit clean ROM) (fastest compact Mac)
IIfx (32 MB RAM) (fastest 030 Mac)
950 (256 MB RAM + 256 MB Nubus RAM Disk) (Most expandable 040 Mac)
840AV (96 MB RAM) (fastest 040 Mac)
PB100 (first real portable Mac)
LC475 (really tiny footprint)

You can see why I got mine... collecting is a personal thing for many of
us... it's not just based on how many or how valuable... ;)

smiles,
Jamie

Funny you should ask. The 11G was used in a lot of IIci's. In fact, I
have the one from my IIci out at the moment (gotta get another PRAM

I learned early on with one of my Macs to keep a floppy disk partially

Well, can't speak specifically to the 630, but I believe that everything
you need is already part of the case. The card itself just goes in the
slot provided on the logic board. The TV module is installed in a bay
above the logic board with the coax connector protruding through the
knock-out hole in the back cover. When you open the bay, there is a
flat cable just laying inside, ready for use.

At least this is true for the 6200/6300 series of which I have several
and they use the same case as the 630.

The MPF-75W is the basic model number. The 11G and 12G are revision codes.

If Sony's revision coding is anythin like some other Japanese companies I am
familiar with, the 11 and 12 indicates the artwork number (or mechanical
drawing number) and the G indicates the form, fit and function
compatibility code.

IOW, the 11 and 12 are not relevant, as long as the letter in the G position
is the same.
