Even though you don't have another *printer,* select another driver. just
curious to see if other drivers produce the same action... If not, you may
just want to delete and reinstall the driver file.

If it's not the driver issue mentioned above, I'd start leaning towards a
hardware issue... unless someone else has ideas?

Yes, I've been trying it with an appletalk/local talk connection as well

Oddly enough, the back of my 8500 says the printer port is on the
inside, but the pdf of the manual says it is on the outside.

So, yes, I've switched back and forth, without benefit or result.

Actually, lest you think that you have a Geoport on your Performa 636, I
should point out that many Performas (including the "Road Apple" PPCs that
were based on the Quadra/LC/Performa 630-type design) had a 9th pin, but
did not have Geoports -- they came bundled with a special Global Village
external modem that used the 9th pin to draw its power, like a Geoport
adaptor, so you didn't need a power brick.

OK, turn the printer off, unplug the serial cable from it, then re-try the

My SWII knowledge is a bit rusty, though I do have some floating around
here somewhere.

Ahh... here's one.

I *believe* the second, smaller LED is there specifically for errors -
paper jams, startup error codes, that sort of thing. The main green LED
should stay on for a while (IIRC the printer goes into a standby mode after
a while, at which time that goes off - either that or I'm thinking of the
SW2400 I was using.)

No bent pins in the cable?

Just for the heck of it, have you done a test print? (turn printer off,
wait a sec or two, turn printer on but HOLD the button down for 5 sec or
(IIRC) the small round LED starts flashing, then let go.) If the printer
can't do THAT, there's something wrong with the printer itself.

The extra pin is for +5V power, used by various Geoport devices.

Do you have drivers installed for the printer?
Is there paper in it?
What happens when you try to print to it?

Mac serial Printer cables use a mini-DIN8 connector, with 8 pins.

When Apple introduced the "Geoport", they added a 9th pin, which supplies
power to the connected device. That 9th pin is not used for any printers,
as far as I know.

Performa 636CD and StyleWriter II

2003-03-07 Thread Jay
Greetings,

Newbie question. New Macintosh user. Stuff
you will know the answer to :)

  ( o o )
 ( o oo )
( o o o o )
  ( o o )

Above represents, roughly, the serial port
on the back of my Macintosh Performa 636CD.
I notice that the third row of pins from
the top row are 4 in number. But the serial
cable I purchased for connecting a Macintosh
StyleWriter II has but three pins in that row.
Even so, the cable fits the serial port. Is
it routine that one pin is not used? Or?

A list group member got me on track to
disable AppleTalk, which is not in use here,
so that my serial port is available to the
printer. However, that resolved, the 636
now reports to check that the printer is
connected and turned on.

Having no StyleWriter II manual, I am in doubt
as to how the printer is put online. The
rectangular light emitting diode lights up
when I power up the printer. However, the
small, round LED about an inch to the left
of the power LED is not lighted. And the
StyleWriter has but one button, for power on.
Is the StyleWriter not online? Is the smaller,
round LED for online? Or?

Thanks, and regards,
Jay

Eric,

Thanks for your guiding me around the Performa
os. I found the "Chooser" and disabled Appletalk.
I am still not printing, but the Appletalk use
of the serial port was definitely a problem that
you helped me fix. I will get back into shooting
the rest of the trouble soon enough. Again, thanks.

Go to the Chooser and make sure AppleTalk is turned off. Also make sure
you have selected the proper port (Printer or Modem) for your printer
connection.

Ken

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without.

Re: Performa 636CD and StyleWriter II

2003-02-27 Thread E McCann
Hmm -
Easiest thing to do would be go into the control panels, find Appletalk,
and either disable it or tell it to use the modem (the other serial) port -
unless, of course, you have a modem set up there, too.

Alternately - again, if you don't have a modem - switch the cable to the
modem port (they're both serial ports) and change the settings in the
Chooser (under the Apple menu.)

Alternative 2 is to kill Appletalk - given that you don't have more Macs,
you're not using it to network. Go to the Extensions Manager (in control
panels) and de-select Appletalk.

What I think is going on is this - you can network Macs via their serial
ports (localtalk.) IF this is enabled, and it's looking on the serial port
you have your printer hooked to for the network, Appletalk has control of
the port - basically the fat guy in front of the tiny window you're trying
to look (er, print) through.

HTH,
Eric

Performa 636CD and StyleWriter II

2003-02-27 Thread Jay
Fellow Mac Users,
I recently joined the Maintosh world with the acquisition
of a used Performa 636CD and StyleWriter II printer.
I bought a serial cable and black ink cartridge for the
printer, and want to print. I am getting the message
that the serial port is already in use, and to close
the application using it. But I don't have any application
using it. Naturally, I am a bit stumped. I know *Nothing
about Macintosh.
Regards,
Jay
