RE: [Quantum Owners] CVH on 2 Cylinders - Q2009

2011-11-08 Thread Chris
This sounds like what happened to my old engine before I had KAP change it.
I managed to nurse it for a couple of thousand miles before it got worse. I
think it was down to one cylinder when I took it up to Glyns workshop!

Agreed, probably the gasket.
The only problem you may find is that if you've driven it any distance is
that the head might be burnt away above the gap in the gasket as the
combustion gases move from one cylinder to the other via the gap.

I had this on my 2+2 (admittedly a turbo) the second time the head gasket
went, got away with it the first time.
I drove the car about 2 miles on 2 cylinders to get it away from the rolling
road that the head gasket had gone on, before calling the AA.

I managed to get a local alloy welding company to weld up the damage and
then got the head skimmed.
Maybe not worth the cost on a bog standard head but mine was a big valve gas
flowed head.

Hi dave

Same happened to me about 3 months ago, but only a mile from home. It
sounded like a VW Beetle. Compression test showed next to nowt on two
adjacent cylinders. Thankfully it was the head gasket.

The first symptom sounded like 'pinking' as I accelerated through
50mph. My first thoughts were of bad fuel or distributor slipping, as
it got worse, I started thinking that 20 miles was a long way to walk!
With some careful nursing and some jumping from brake to accelerator
to keep it running (must learn to heel/toe one day) i got home. By
then it sounded like a spark plug was rattling about every time I took
up power.
A first look revealed a spark and fuel at all 4 cylinders but pulling
the plug leads on 3 and 4 made no difference to the (lumpy) running,
pulling a lead on 1 or 2 prevented it from starting totally.
So 20 miles on 2 cylinders is possible, but not good fro your stress
levels.
My next job is to check the compressions, so I'm coming home via
Halfords today to get a tester.
My current best suspicion is a head gasket (or valve lifters maybe - 2
failing at the same time?), especially with the speed that this came
on at, my nightmare is a big crack between cylinders 3 and 4!
I'll pass on what I find but if this sounds familiar to anyone please
don't be shy, I'm having to drive the wife's Astra at the moment!
