Hibernation is not supported by Xen, so it's probably not supposed to
work. However, suspend (S3 sleep) is supported.

I am trying to watch Qubes OS: The Operating System That Can Protect You
Even If You Get Hacked and the other videos on the qubes website with tor
browser (on non qubes os). I see that youtube has this video but even in
html5 mode I can not watch videos. Anyone suggest where else I can find a
copy of this video and the others on the site.

This is one of the videos on the site I am trying to watch as an example:

[qubes-users] VM won't start if Realtek PCI card reader is assigned to it (even if removing conflicting Ethernet controller)

2019-10-22 Thread 'Davide' via qubes-users

*Qubes version*

Qubes-R4.0.1-x86_64

*Affected component(s) or functionality*

02.00.0: Realtek PCI Express Card Reader RTL8411B vs.

02.00.1: Realtek PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller RTL8111/8168/8411

---

*Steps to reproduce the behaviour
*

1. From sys-usb Qube Settings (or any other qube), section Devices,
attach device 02.00.0 (card reader).

2. Start sys-usb (or other qube).

*Expected or desired behaviour*

The VM will start and card reader device is available.

*Actual behaviour*

The VM won't start. An error message appears: "qrexec-daemon startup
failed: Connection to tthe VM failed".

*General notes
*

The same problem occurred right after installation with my Ethernet
controller in sys-net. In that case I managed to get sys-net started
(with my Ethernet controller working) by following suggestions in issue
#1393 . Assign both
Ethernet controller and card reader to sys-net did not work, but
removing card reader did (/echo -n "1" >
/sys/bus/pci/devices/:02:00.0/remove/).

I thought I could do vice versa to get card reader working, but in this
case I had no luck. I tried in vain:

- removing Ethernet controller (/echo -n "1" >
/sys/bus/pci/devices/:02:00.1/remove/).

- attach card reader with no-strict-reset (/qvm-pci a work dom0:02.00.0
--persistent -o no-strict-reset=true/)

- attach it with permissive mode (/qvm-pci a work ///dom0:02.00.0/
--persistent -o no-strict-reset=true/).

/---

*I have consulted the following relevant documentation:*

PCI devices .

*I am aware of the following related, non-duplicate issues:*

#1393

#2882

Forum: Qubes 3.0 rc1 Error reset PCI network card in notebook

[qubes-users] Why is there no option to save VM state?

2019-10-22 Thread Guerlan
In KVM with Qemu I used a lot of VM state saving, where I could save the
entire VM to disk and restore that. Since my SSD is very fast that only
took 5 seconds in average, so it was very useful. Specially, since I cannot
put my laptop to sleep and hibernate wont work either, my only option was
to be able to save VM state, but I don't see any way of doing it.

Is it possible or is it a feature to be implemented?

[qubes-users] OS/2 on Qubes

2019-10-22 Thread Robert Kuropkat

I just installed Qubes and and was hoping I could install OS/2 as a
guest.  I have a collection of VirtualBox VMs as well as original
media.  I tried following these directions (even though they were for a
Windows VM):

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/standalone-and-hvm/#converting-virtualbox-vms-to-qubes-hvms

As mentioned though, it was not a Windows VM, but an OS/2 VM. Also, it
was not a vmdk file type, but a vdi.  At first, it almost looked like it
was working, then the VM stopped with a message that it could not
operate the hard disk.

I also tried install from original media using these directions:

        https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/windows-vm/

Again, the media started up, but then hung and refused to continue.

Thanks awokd, you gave me more hours of tweaking and still a lot of hope.

I didn't think QWT was necessary.

The mystery of how to modify the configuration xml remains.

See you soon for updates.

Thanks for the advice awokd. I was able to get R4.0.2-RC1 installed.

I worked around the Debian template update issue by using 'apt update'
manually in the terminal. The default installed Fedora, Whonix and
Debian templates seem to update from Qubes Manager normally.

I've had issues after restoring my backups though. I can't seem to
upgrade my TemplateVMs without getting the dreaded “Failed to
synchronize cache for repo” errors
https://www.qubes-os.org/faq/#i-keep-getting-failed-to-synchronize-cache-for-repo-errors-when-trying-to-update-my-fedora-templates
Switching the NetVM for the templates between sys-whonix, sys-firewall
and sys-net hasn't resolved the error. I guess that is a Fedora issue
rather than Qubes though.

[qubes-users] [VPN GUIDE] - ProxyVM loses internet connectivity after first restart

2019-10-22 Thread Rafael Reis
Hey folks. I've been trying to achieve VPN connection for a couple of days
now.

As soon as I create or clone a NetVM (AppVM + provides network or cloning
sys-net), on the first boot I'm able to implement, connect and test
everything normally.

After the first reboot I lose completely Internet access on the NetVM,
rendering the VPN Gateway useless.

Followed both the guide in the doc (https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/vpn/) and
also https://github.com/tasket/Qubes-vpn-support, with exact same
unsuccessful results - works on trial run before reboot, but no Internet
access after reboot. To be clear, that is before trying to establish vpn
connection.

I tried pointing them to use sys-net or sys-firewall as NetVM, rebooting,
and no connection comes up.

I'm a dedicated researcher, browsed around quite a bit already but could
not find resources to help me.

I'm running a freshly installed Qubes 4.0 release on fully supported
hardware. I'd be glad to share whatever cmds outputs you need for
clarification.

Thanks in advance

Rafael

[qubes-users] Dell Optiplex 7060 Mini - Qubes 4.0.2-rc1

2019-10-22 Thread Peter
I've installed qubes on a dell desktop that has no PS2 support, and only
one USB controller. So it uses a USB keyboard & mouse. During
installation I saw no prompt for creating a sys-usb, which I understand is
the default when you boot with a USB keyboard.

Here is the output of qvm-pci

I've ready through the USB related documentation, but I'd like to
understand my usb options better.

I believe if I try to create a sys-usb for this PC I'll loose my connection
to keyboard and mouse in dom0 in that case. Is that correct?

If so, is my only option then to either:

use USB insecurely
don't use USB at all except for the keyboard & mouse attached to dom0

Thanks,

Peter

[qubes-users] Again on vga passthrough

2019-10-22 Thread Strak8
Every three months for several years I spend a whole day trying to make the
second video card work on my laptop.
Some will say that it cannot work on laptops for several reasons, in
particular because the consumer GPU does not support vitualization, because
on a MUXed system (radeon 7570M) it is impossible to switch two video cards
simultaneously on the same monitor, almost certainly will not even work on
the external video output, because the ACPI call fails to load the firmware.
I keep doing so many tests, I find out about dozens and dozens of sites,
but I only make small steps forward. Now I can load Windows 7 without
having the blue screen, I see the card in the device manager, but it seems
to be off. (error code 43).
I put all the options, even though they are probably useless.

rd.qubes.hide_pci=02:00.0 modprobe=xen-pciback.passthrough=1
xen-pciback.permissive xen-pciback.hide=(02:00.0)

kernelopts - iommu=soft swiotlb=16384
gfx_passthru True (qvm-features ??)

But I don't understand why:

1. The windows 7 VM with the attached video card loads only with less than
4GB of RAM (otherwise it is blue screen)

2. I don't find in any way the possibility to edit the virtual machine
configuration XML.
   2.1 under "/ var / lib / qubes / appvms / WIN-7-2 /" the configuration
file no longer exists.
2.2 I found the way to export the XML with virsh dumpxml, but with the
qvm-start command there is no longer the "--custom-config" option
2.3 I force editing the XML from virsh edit (VM) in VIM, but then resume
the values entered in qvm-features.
   2.4 I can't change the amount of vram? (qvm-feature video-vram?)

3. the Windows guest video drive (both cirrus and vga) there is no monitor
resolution (1366x768)

Valid and working alternatives:
spice?
ovmf?
dgpu on usb3?
Dell precision 7000 series?

I need windows only because there isn't a valid alternative to photoshop
and other Adobe products, I don't find myself with gimp and krita.

thanks
bye
