What about "PFree" in output of "pvs"?

As a side note: On my very first attempt to write a parser in Java I had
pasted a "mathematical minus" () from some PDF without realizing. As it
turned out that mathematical minus has a three-byte UTF-8 encoding while Java
just handles 16 bits it seemed to me. Took me quite a _lot_ of time until I
found the reason for the odd program results... ;-)

My guess is that it's easier to "show the password" rather than display the
keyboard layout.
For me (having installed us and de only), it's probably to attempts to unlock
(one for each layout) ;-)

My proposal would be: Get a temporary disk or partition of the same (required)
size. create an encrypted partition of the same size than the original (it can
be tricky as the encryption header needs some space). dd the original partition
to the opened encrypting partition (or disk). When done veryify it looks sane.
Finally dd back from the temporary partition to the original partition.
Eventually you'll have to mess with the crypttab...

Quoting like above works fine for plain text messages with hard line ends, but
for one-line-per-paragraph HTML messages this style does not make sense, and
actually most cleints can't properly quote HTML messages, so the best
alternative is top-posting.

As you see I live in both worlds, preferring text/plain ;-)

[qubes-users] Setting up Yubikey with Qubes OS

2020-02-18 Thread Anil
I am using Qubes 4.0.3. I would feel a little bit more secure if I was
able to setup Yubikey with Qubes. I had tried that, following the
instructions given on the Qubes website, but it didn't work, probably
because of the way passphrase is saved in the configuration files. If
someone can help me set it up, that would be something I badly need. I
am using Yubikey with various online accounts and with the Windows
laptop.

[Starting a new thread because it's an unrelated matter and I do need help].

I successfully burned the .iso image to a USB using `dd` . when I booted up

but don't have any clue how to do that and it is an older version of Qubes
there. also here :

I've also enabled VT-x.
Is there a simple solution to this?

This may be up to interpretation but...

I assumed the original question w/r/t VM snapshots (a thing under VMWare
and other VMMs) and not storage volume snapshots.

Cloning a VM is more akin to VMWare snapshots and doesn’t require tracking
auto-expiration of numbered lvm snapshots.

2020-02-18 Thread brendan . hoar
Assuming a standard qubes 4.0.x install, just clone the VM each time you are
making risky changes...before each change of course.*

The use of lvm thin pool makes clones essentially use zero storage other that
the bits where they diverge from the original VM, where copy on write preserves
the differences.

Brendan

* ok, technically...make the clone anytime *before* shutting down the vm after
the risky change...but purposely cutting it that close has risks.

if you're interested in that version of KDE, you'll need to run the Qubes
4.1 beta, as Qubes 4.0's fedora 25 won't receive that update. :)
(And you'll need to install the packages manually, as the meta package
@kde-desktop-qubes doesn't work (yet).)
you'll probably need at least:
plasma-breeze plasma-workspace kdelibs kde-settings-plasma sddm dolphin
kwin kscreen

I have just deleted the win-domain and run the command again.

I got Win 7 and the Qubes Win Tools installed, but got some errors on the
way...

This file does not exist: /var/lib/qubes/dom0-updates/var/cache

This folder does not exist: /var/lib/qubes/dom0-updates

Also:

“Failed to set locale, defaulting to C”

Three times: “UnicodeEncodeError: ‘ascii’ codec can’t encode character
‘\xe6’ in position ...: ordinal not in range(128)”

Eight times: “UnicodeEncodeError: ‘ascii’ codec can’t encode character
‘\xf8’ in position ...: ordinal not in range(128)”

Ends with: “Installation complete”

What shall I do now... ?

I can’t see how I can start Windows 7 in the Qubes Menu.

And the guide doesn’t say anything about how to open Windows 7 or what to
do next in relation to install Windows 10.

[qubes-users] Creating snapshot

2020-02-18 Thread 'ukernel' via qubes-users
Team good day, I wanted to check with you if there is any way to create
snapshots in Qubes OS, without having to make a full backup of the AppVM. What
happens is that I am testing with a Windows 7 VM and when I install the Qubes
Windows Tools it stops working for some reason and the OS no longer starts. I
had to reinstall it because I could not recover it or in safemode it started.
And it took me almost a day to apply all OS security updates. I wouldn't want
to go through that again.

Best regards,

Yes, that doc page should also mention something about choosing KDE or

The way Chris describes is probably the proper way to do it now.

However I can confirm that the OP's linked instructions work fine on
debian 10:

* debian-10-wireguard HVM template
* install wireguard from testing/unstable

[qubes-users] Parrot template

2020-02-18 Thread Claudio Chinicz
Hi,

I'm trying to build a Parrot template from Debian-10 following the steps
from here: https://docs.parrotlinux.org/getting-started/install-qubes/ (
Option 2 - Build a ParrotOS TemplateVM on top of a Debian TemplateVM).

I do not know what to do when I get to:

[user@parrot ~]$ sudo cat < /etc/apt/sources.list.d/parrot.list
 # ParrotOS repository
deb http://deb.parrotsec.org/parrot stable main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://deb.parrotsec.org/parrot stable main contrib non-free
EOF

So I've created /etc/apt/sources.list.d/parrot.list using vim and added this
one line:
deb http://deb.parrotsec.org/parrot stable main contrib non-free

When I run sudo apt install parrot-core parrot-archive-keyring parrot-drivers
parrot-skel I get the following errors:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package parrot-core
E: Unable to locate package parrot-archive-keyring
E: Unable to locate package parrot-drivers
E: Unable to locate package parrot-skel

Please help.

Thanks

I think this is telling you you have less RAM available than are calling
for across your running VMs. Qubes/Xen can still function by shrinking
RAM in less used VMs or resorting to swap, but that can impact
performance (possibly unnoticeably). You could either throw more RAM at
it, trim your VMs' memory maximums or run fewer simultaneously, or
ignore it if you're not having performance issues.
