[qubes-users] Re: Blank screen after resume if using Nvidia on Lenovo P53

2020-04-19 Thread John Doe
Hello,
my previous message does not seem to have appeared, maybe it has been flagged
because of some links.

Anyway, I have successfully compiled kernel by notset, but it does not seem to
change anything for NVIDIA.

I understand why, but it is not an issue for me, since I have small
children :). The latest BIOS update did turn out for the better, and you
can actually select "Quiet" in the BIOS. I run around 6-9 AppVM's with
different specs. It is a noisy fan, though.

The big issue is support for the firmware, because Intel, bless their
apparently black hearts, only support Windows on the machines, so I am
hoping for better support soon. Wireless, sound, does not work and my
Windows HVM shuts down unexpectedly after a few minutes.

Can't recommend it yet. running the latest 5.6.4-1 and it works apparently
fast and nice, except for the flapping wireless, no sound a missing all
USB. Nice graphics and speed.

Sincerely
Max

It is service that provides core Qubes functionality.
Source is in core-admin/qubes/tools/qubesd.py

You could have found this yourself in dom0 -`ps aux |grep qubesd` points
you at /usr/bin/qubesd
Inspection of that file indicates existence of qubesd.py
`find -name qubesd*` gets the file name:
/usr/lib/python3.5/site-packages/qubes/tools/qubesd.py

`dnf provides` tells you which package provides the file:
qubes-core-dom0

Or if you have the full source downloaded you could just grep for the
name using `grep -r`

Maybe the Logitech C910 is just cursed?

Perhaps someone could recommend a webcam known to be compatable with Qubes?

FYI, I've really only tried this with a limited number of applications plus
Qubes but, in Hangouts for instance - I learned the hard way that in order
to use my webcam (I believe I can attest to the specific model you mention
but don't ask me to state it clearly) I had to start a call with someone
then attach the web cam (meaning using either qvm-usb in dom0 or the GUI
equivalent for a logical attachment & NOT meaning that I then physically
attach) to the VM where the call exists already. I was of course using a
browser & there were items to work out & changes that could lead backward
if you didn't pay attention, but in general it works for me.

Thank you for this insight!

I have found that connecting my Logitech camera to a usb port, then
using the Qubes qui widget to connect it to the relevant qube with

Facebook messenger already running in Chromium, will allow the camera
to work when I call someone up!! Firefox doesn't work.

After finishing a call, I have to disconnect the camera from the qube,
remove the camera from the usb port, and then go through the procedure
above again, if I want to make another call. It's a bit of a palaver,
but it works most of the time.

Thanks again,

   Mike.

[qubes-users] Making boot-from-CD permanent for an appVM

2020-04-19 Thread tetrahedra via qubes-users
Is it possible to make the `--drive` option for `qvm-start` permanent?
For example, to configure a Tails AppVM with no persistency but also
without creating a separate TemplateVM, DispVM template, and then
DispVM.
