[qubes-users] Backup issues with external USB and ESATA devices

2019-12-27 Thread Charles Peters
In late September I backed up qubes using a new WD Elements external
drive. At the time I don't think I had sys-usb installed. Yesterday when
I tried to do the backups I was unable to mount the WD Elements drive,
another USB connected Toshiba hard drive, or the Toshiba drive connected
with ESATA. I can mount USB flash drives, but with a vfat filesystem it
will not support the large multi GB backup file.

Booting Debian with the ESATA connected Toshiba drive I can mount the WD
Elements drive without any problems. However I haven't figured out how to
mount the SSD with Qubes OS lvm to copy the backup files.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Chuck

It looks like you haven't added the repository key.
 https://qgis.org/en/site/forusers/alldownloads.html#debian-ubuntu

Did you add the repository gpg key?
Note: If you follow the commands listed on the web page in a Template VM,
the wget command will fail.

I would also like to see a list of templates and other addons that could be
shared by the community. A couple of examples of what could be shared by
community:
1. Debian, Fedora and possibly other distros templates for various use
cases.
2. alpha or experimental - Qubes-based SecureDrop Journalist Workstation
environment for submission handling
https://github.com/freedomofpress/securedrop-workstation
3. Prago provided his salt configurations for Firefox earlier today.
https://groups.google.com/forum/?utm_medium=email_source=footer#!msg/qubes-users/oStl_IGHuLQ/T56IxhxACAAJ
4. Backups to the local network unencrypted, or automated backups.

What would the community like to see documented?

What other tools, or website(s) can we build to provide gpg signed
templates and addons?

Debian and Ubuntu provide packages.debian.org and packages.ubuntu.com of
the various versions. The information can also be obtained from command
line tools, but the website is useful when looking for software and is
built automatically from the repositories. I haven't found anything
similar for Fedora, does something like it exist? It would be really cool
to see qubes provide an automated site which shows the templates and the
packages the template contains.

*What I've tried (for what it's worth):*

$ rpm -qa --queryformat '%{SIZE} %{NAME} \n'| grep template | sort -n

(none) qubes-template-buster-gnome
(none) qubes-template-fedora-30
(none) qubes-template-fedora-30-xfce

3099013352 qubes-template-bionic
3490724048 qubes-template-debian-10

I have been trying to determine why some templates show none... And why I
can't seem to see where the space is actually used by dom0, it seems to sym
link to nothing.

[qubes-users] HCL Info - Dell Latitude E6520

Intel Corporation 82579LM Gigabit Network Connection (Lewisville) (rev 04)
Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 34)

Wired Networking isn't working.

Plugging in the wired network disables the wifi. I have checked logs for
the cause without success. Should I try running a different kernel in
sys-net and/or dom0?

Any other useful suggestions would be appreciated?

You can reinstall grub to the master boot loader using the OS which
originally controlled grub, (ie, something like grub-install /dev/sda". then
regenerate the grub menu with "update-grub". Or you can modify the grub
settings in qubes to provide the menus you want.

Depends on your threat model. Qubes is meant to be installed as the only
operating system, so you are potentially opening up some risk.

How about installing the latest firefox as a further customization?

Debian packages firefox-esr and changing the settings to turn off
video autoplay is very unfriendly compared to the latest versions of
firefox. I'm installing the latest firefox in user space rather than
the templates because of the problems created by using qubes
persistence/userspace and firefox's built in updating method. Any
suggestions how to do that with Debian DispVMs?

For the Fedora template yes, but I would have to repeat the process
every time for a new release of firefox in the Debian DispVM's.

The following dom0 commands fixed the kernel panic reboot issue.

sudo cp -p /boot/vmlinuz-4.19.71-1.pvops.qubes.x86_64 /boot/efi/EFI/qubes/
sudo dracut -f /boot/efi/EFI/qubes/initramfs-4.19.71-1.pvops.qubes.x86_64.img
4.19.71-1.pvops.qubes.x86_64
sudo cp -p /boot/efi/EFI/qubes/initramfs-4.19.71-1.pvops.qubes.x86_64.img /boot/
sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg

https://www.qubes-os.org/doc/software-update-dom0/#kernel-upgrade
shows a similar procedure.

[qubes-users] kernel panic after Dom0 update

2019-10-07 Thread Charles Peters
I installed Qubes a couple of weeks ago and yesterdays dom0 update causes a
kernel panic. Looking through grub it appears the new kernel is lacking
the initramfs image (only the older kernel entries have the grub line
"module --nounzip /initramfs-4.19.56-1img).Any suggestions on
reinstalling the kernel or fixing the issue would be appreciated.

The Reporting bugs page says to use the provided template, and to include
the HTML comments in the issue template, but does give any clue about where
the issue temple resides or how to use it.

Thanks,
Chuck

PS. Qubes release 4.0 I installed the RC a few weeks ago, then
reinstalled on a SSD drive.
