Has anyone else observed this behaviour? Also is there any way to iteratively consult the various server addresses given in the ntp.conf file? Regards, Arpith On some, or many machines, the hardware clock (time of day) is sustained by a coin cell battery when power is off! Sooner or later this battery must be replaced. The ones I've encountered used a CR-2013 coin cell. If investigation reveals that there is such a cell it will need to be replaced every few years. Observe the markings on the old battery and find a battery to match it. If power is seldom off and is restored quickly this battery may last for three to six years! YMMV As I recall, the last time I needed such a battery, I purchased it for a dollar or two at a nearby drug store. If this does not resolve your problem, seek professional help! Unfortunately on many systems the batter is welded into the system. It is not user replacable. They expect you to throw out the motherboard when the battery dies. I've never seen such a system. I hope I never do! Who manufactured/distributed this P.O.S??? I've had many motherboards with a three cell nicad or nimh soldered (not welded) and replacing the packs has been little more difficult than replacement of a CR2032. I've also had 6V packs of replaceable standard cells. ISTR that older systems defaulted to 1970 when the battery gave up. I'd suggest a startup script is added to set the date to 2012 either before ntpd is started or if that's not possible change ntpd startup to check that date is reasonable before starting ntpd. Hi, I have my pi running on the web right now at http://121.221.94.250/ I made a small web site to expose various parameters in realtime. Still waiting for my gps unit, but I am pretty happy with millisecond from live internet sources. PPS is next. The website needs a little more polish, but the basics are there. http://121.221.94.250/ Unreachable, 08:19 UTC Wednesday 29th August. I've seen on another site, that people using the chipset based serial port with GPS and other devices, and have *Much* better results than when using a USB hosted serial port. There are still issues with the Pi's network port, as that aparrently is a USB driven device on board, resulting in more latency than might be expected otherwise, and some extra variability too. I also found that the Pi would lock up and need a power cycle, if left running the default NTPD service for anything more than two or three days. It was predictable and repeatable, but I've not tried updating the OS (or NTP) and doing that again. That was using the original Debian distro for the thing. At this exact time, it's back in it's box while I make room for it by doing other things, much more important according to domestic management. I have other plans for it. Regards. Haven't used my Slackware Linux PC for a couple of days. When started this morning was surprised to see: 20 Aug 09:10:49 ntpdate[3116]: step time server 139.143.5.30 offset -684197.258181 sec whilst running: timeserver1=ntp1.npl.co.uk timeserver2=ntp2.npl.co.uk /usr/sbin/ntpdate -b $timeserver1 $timeserver2 from /etc/rc.d/rc.local Looking in /var/syslog (see below) I can see three occasions recently when the clock has raced ahead whilst the PC is switched off. I'm about to go and buy a new CMOS battery. Battery is 5 years old, same as the PC. But intuitively I'd have thought that an old battery would make the clock run slow. Curious to know if others have seen fast clocks with old batteries? Or any other observations... Keeping my fingers crossed that a new battery will fix the fast clock. And maybe a recent rebooot problem, which only affects the OS on one of my disk drives. The PC will only reboot properly when 'cold' e.g. overnight switch-off, but this only affects the OS (Linux Win7) on 1 particular disk. Rebooting during the first 5 minutes is fine, but after that it just reboots to the legacy grub menu. All other disks/OS reboot OK. Cheers, Peter grep Dquot-cache hash table syslog | awk '{print $1,$2,$3}' | tail -n 20 Aug 6 09:04:34 Aug 6 17:16:41 Aug 7 09:50:31 Aug 8 18:25:25 Aug 8 22:02:14 Aug 9 16:18:41 Aug 10 18:41:47 Aug 11 08:33:38 Aug 17 12:18:24 Aug 13 17:21:06 Aug 14 08:11:51 Aug 14 18:23:30 Aug 14 20:38:13 Aug 15 16:59:58 Aug 21 02:16:06 Aug 17 22:02:15 Aug 16 20:42:10 Aug 19 13:57:42 Sep 4 18:38:03 Aug 28 07:09:02 ___ questions mailing list questions@lists.ntp.org http://lists.ntp.org/listinfo/questions

Check out the Sure Electronics GPS board, which can be easily modified to provide a PPS signal. There are other inexpensive GPS units as well. Yet another time the completely irrelevant topic of the hobbyist GPS receiver is brought into the thread... The OP was asking about abrupt/sudden changes in a system's time. This is unrelated to the availability of GPS. When he connects the GPS receiver he will have to watch the same issue as when connecting to another reference. It was related to his statement that his server was not connected to the net and thus its time was out, and then it connected to the net. The statement about GPS was make to fix the problem that when it was not connected to the net, it had a bad time. GPS always operates. Of course his machine could be in a bunker 1000 meter underground with no connection to the surface, in this case the GPS option would be no good either. But in may circumstance it IS an answer to the problem the OP had. Of course not. The OP wants to make sure his clock does not step when he starts ntpd. When not configured correctly, the clock will step when ntpd is started. It is too late to connect a GPS receiver now, he first needs to sort out how to get the clock adjusted without stepping. ___ questions mailing list questions@lists.ntp.org http://lists.ntp.org/listinfo/questions
