Thanks but still do not understand, what is the effect of “both channels
mono” in contrast to “both channels stereo?”
Thanks

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Sound and performance quality of SB Radio compared to SB Boom

2023-01-01 Thread Goodsounds

Thank you both for the responses. From your experiences I think I'll get
one. Replacing/repairing/etc. is well beyond my abilities or interest -
either something works adequately and I can use it, or if it no longer
does, it gets tossed.

Just one question, Jim mentions a Wifi issue. Can you give me a bit more
info about the Wifi problem please?

The Wifi feature died on my Boom a good number of years ago - I bought
an Iogear ethernet to wifi adaptor and it's been working well. I presume
I could configure a Radio for ethernet and then similarly use an Iogear
device if I have a problem?

Thanks again.

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Sound and performance quality of SB Radio compared to SB Boom

2023-01-01 Thread Redrum

I agree with the boom sound quality over the radio. I had never had a
desire or a need for a radio...until I bought one. Then I bought more. I
bought them for others. I love my radios. As you mention they are cheap
(here in US $50 for a $300MSRP product). I find it well engineered and a
great sound for a little box.

Then add the portability with a $20 battery, with battery life lasting
6+ hours. The portability is huge. Use them when working outside, and
when you move to another area, just take it with you. They are great for
casual listening - I will be working outside, or in a certain room, and
the sound is just fine for non critical listening. Of course the boom is
"fuller"

The radio is mixed stereo, but you can get 2 :) and use them as L and
R.

Regarding the boom power jack/plug, I have experienced this as well, but
often it can be fixed with a little deoxit or similar - spray, insert,
twist, pull out, repeat, maybe a q-tip.

A couple of other advantages/disadvantages (while I am at it) -

The boom display starts to fail, but they can be replaced.
The boom has more areas (like faceplate) that gets sticky, where the
radio it's typically the knobs and buttons
The radio has the wifi6 issue.
I have setup a couple non technical friends with a radio, headphone out
to RCA input into their stereo, radio on fixed volume. It's not
audiophile, but sounds good. I find the UI of the radio (color screen
with buttons and knobs) to be very non squeezebox people friendly.
You can get radios in 3 colorscollect them all!...I have :)

Happy New Year
Jim

Re: [SlimDevices: Radio] Radio reboots often, Out of Memory

2023-01-01 Thread icebreaker

Mine does also report 48% on the radio, while the top output is 50%, so
I guess that would go together. But then the device only shows the
memory usage from the jive process and not the complete memory.
I run my radio on mains too, sometimes on battery when I move it round.

just as a data point, my radio (which runs fine) shows 48% memory useage
at the above location. It is synched to a Touch and streaming when I'm
checking. Running latest community firmware and plugged in (not running
on battery).

I have stopped the sync and did a reboot. When it came back online, no
stream was running and the jive process uses about 42% memory. Another
12% goes to the jive_alsa process.
So half the memory is used even when it's in "standby / ready" mode.

And I guess it's not simple to remove that. I just wonder what happens
when does url are not available anymore. I mean I have seen it now, but
that would make it not fun anymore to use it.
I don't think mine reboots so often, but now I will keep an eye on that
uptime.

Just after a reboot, when it comes back on and starts playing again, I
have seen up to 20% free memory left. But I need to say, that my players
are all synced. Not sure that makes a difference.

Also I thought, that everything would come from the server, which is not
true as I figured out now. After disable the firewall rule, the artwork
is back on the screen. That would tell me, it comes from the internet
direct and not from the server.

The radio, touch and controller reset/reboot/crash every 24 days. It's
a know issue and discussed at length in various threads on the forum,
unfortunately there's no simple fix.

Calling home is baked into the firmware it's not something that was
added to the community firmware.
