[RBW] Hillborne in the house

2009-05-06 Thread EricP

Yesterday was a big day on a personal level. Not only have I now
doubled my Rivendell bike ownership, but also did my first bike build
since getting back into riding four years ago.

Stopped at Hiawatha to pick up the frame and have master mechanic
Mongo Mark install a front cantilever cable hanger and spray some
framesaver. Was even able to open up the box and unpack the bike.
(Ahh, new bike smell. Or was that just the framesaver?)

Some comments on the Hillborne. First off, wow! From the previous
photos was expecting a slightly dark green. What I see instead is a
lovely medium green. Beautiful. With a lot of depth to the paint.
And the details - my goodness. Lugwork is excellent. (Of course.)
Especially like the little shark fin at the back of the fork crown
lug. Great touch. The overall lines and proportions of the bike look
right. After building, happen to lean the Hillborne near my
Atlantis. Sam has nothing to be ashamed of. He can easily hold his
own with the likes of a truly classic frame.

Spent the evening building up the bike. Nothing too fancy, in fact,
except for the brakes, just about everything else was lying around the
garage waiting for a bike frame. Some of my parts choices will not be
approved by everyone. Specifically going with Noodle bars and a dirt
drop stem. However, as of now, the bars are 4 to 6 cm higher than the
saddle. A good starting point for getting back into drop bars.
Although now need to wrap the top tube to prevent the bar end shifters
from smacking it. Yes, it happened quite a few times during the
buildgrin.

Only one issue during the build. If one is going to use cantilever
brakes, be careful picking the rear cable hanger. Am using basically
the same one Rivendell sells. However, needed to grind off some of
the back of the hanger to get it to fit around a 5mm bolt and still
have the seatpost slide in easily. Not a big issue, but does bear
mentioning.

So only rode it around our circle drive and up a small hill. And it
is impossible to compare it to any other of my bikes as each is set up
so differently. The quick impression is it tracks true and is really,
really comfortable. Hopefully a longer ride today will confirm that
impression.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: Along the Des Moines River

2009-05-06 Thread Forrest

Looks like a great jaunt, Mike, with a nice group of people. Thanks
for sharing photos. Are you going to do the Tour of the Raccoon June
13-14 (http://www.dmcycleclub.com/tour_raccoon/)? -- Forrest in Iowa
City

On May 3, 4:19 pm, Mike Irwin rivendellbrownbom...@gmail.com wrote:
Today was our leisurely cycling group's Spring Ride. (However, I
forgot both my Flip video cam and my digital camera in my car and
didn't realize that I'd left it behind for about 20 minutes into the
ride...another rider took some pics, so I'll try to post something up
 soon.)

For anyone that is remotely familiar with Central Iowa, we started in
Des Moines (at the Birdland Marina) and traveled north along the Des
Moines River to the Saylorville Dam. I was on my Protovelo and it was
a great chance to get out with the temperature around 70 F for most of
the ride. The others in our small group (five in total) were mostly on
steel bikes from the 70's and early 80's. (I've been somewhat
successful in cultivating a small group of individuals who enjoy a
tour rather than a race and have embraced the thought of a rolling
 bicycle adventure/picnic.)

The route hugs the river pretty close and snakes through some woodland
area. For anyone that heard about Iowa's 150 year flood that is
apparently hitting every 15 years now (at least in the Des Moines
area), the route rolls through some of the hardest hit areas. It was
nice to discover that our Park and Rec group had been diligently
working to clean up the trail over the past 12 months.

The ride finished with a BBQ in Union Park, a park on Des Moines'
north side. All in all, a successful day and a great kickoff for many
 more rides to come.

[RBW] Re: ICF Time Trial Rule Changes

2009-05-06 Thread Garth

The UCI must drive teams crazy.. it should stand for Union
Cycliste Instability. LOL :)

They say they are going to ban the equipment at the Tour of
California. then they relent from the protest of teams. Now make
make the threat again and it all the teams protest again. What are
they going to do. stop the TDF from happening? .. Certainly
not. They appear to be on mission to bolster their collective E-G-O,
instead of working WITH teams on a solution that works. Easier said
than done, for sure as bolstering the E-G-O is a problem for all
of us.

Would it not be reasonable to make this change starting with a new
year, instead of the middle of it? If you're going to disqualify a
person or team make it the Tour of Qatar . not the TDF.

That said.. It is getting close to silly season once again.
the period before the TDF when all the books, articles and accusations
of who's done wrong and who's going where come out.

The UCI is just getting a little head start this year! LOL :)

[RBW] Re: Any Rivs in New York City??

2009-05-06 Thread Brooklyn

I too ride an Atlantis and live in Brooklyn (Bay Ridge). I am out
most Saturday and Sunday mornings soon after sunrise and ride along
the Brooklyn water front, through Coney Island, Sheepshead Bay and out
to Jamaica Bay.Great views and few car traffic problems.

The Coney Island boardwalk is open to bikes before 10:00 AM. (it is a
bit of a mess and the 35s on my Atlantis is perfect--several of the st
steets connecting the bike paths etc could use a littel care too). I
have yet to see another Riv Bike. Although most of my rides last only
couple of hrs one can create a very nice 60+ mile ride along the water
front of Brooklyn and Queesn and around the Gateway National Rec Area
surrounding Jamaica Bay. I ussually do this several times during the
year when I play hookey during the week. One can go miles and miles
without having to fight cars. All in the great Cty of New York

My Atlantis is a standard build with bar end shifters (I am sorry I
did not get downtube, I someday may change) with a Bookes Team
Professional (I may change to a B17). The saddle is honey and matches
quite nicley to the shallaced, cork bar tape. Its a bit spartan, no
fenders and I don't even have bottle cages mounted. I kind of like it
that way. Lately I hve been just using a burrito bag lashed to the
saddle rails with toe straps--That seems to work quite well. I have
had the bike for about 2 years and I love it.

During the week, while the weather and daylenght permit I ride in New
Jesey (where I work and where I keep and old Japeanese Road bike
(outfitted with Riv goodies) I ride through the Rutgers campus in
Piscataway and surrounding areas incldued the tow path that runs along
the Rariatan River. My Atlantis would be better for that, but the
old bike has 1 and 1/4 inch tires and with a little skill the tow path
works OK (genrally hardpacked clay with some gravel).

.I bought the bike without see a live one based on the t he pics and
reading lists like this. Riv bikes are nice. I am tempted to buy
another. (However, as a Brooklynite, living in an apartment, that
might not be practical).

Cheers,
David

Also, if you use a large handlebar bag on a rack, as I do (Berthoud GB28

[RBW] Pitlock Seatpost Binder on my Atlantis

2009-05-06 Thread William Henderson

A while back on another thread, a fellow member mentioned that he had
put a Pitlock seatpost binder on his Heron frame by using some
creative use of washers. He even provided pictures:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/24103...@n08/3465986632/in/set-72157617180006138/

I just did the same and it seems to work just fine. I didn't put any
washers on the outside - just enough to fill the recesses (I'm not
even sure if that was necessary - it seems to hold fine without
them). According to Peter White and several posts here this shouldn't
be possible, but as far as I can tell it isn't a problem.

ride. But no doubt coordinating our schedules is the devil in the

Try something similar from Vermont Country Store. They're highly
reminiscent of those awful floral-print ones they used in the 50's,
but they might work for your saddle.

Tough, durable and on the slightly expensive side. Chrome makes a

+1 Make it effective Jan 1st (sorry Cross racers).

I really like the quotes in favor of banning TT bikes. You have to race on

Would it not be reasonable to make this change starting with a new

That said.. It is getting close to silly season once again.
the period before the TDF when all the books, articles and accusations

The UCI is just getting a little head start this year! LOL :)

[RBW] Re: ICF Time Trial Rule Changes

2009-05-06 Thread charlie

Its always interesting how equipment improvements become the unfair
advantage. I've seen these equipment races in other sports and they
often result in some giving up because they can't complete
financially. If you ask me, I think all the bicycles should be the
same and riders should not be able to have support cars and they
should have to repair their own bike just like they did in the early
days. Of course then there wouldn't be as much money in it but then
again the vintage style might attract more participation. At least it
would be more interesting to watch. I'd love to see riders on the side
of the road fixing flats and bending their forks straight between two
fence rails! Imagine how the style of bike might look. It would
probably be something like Riv sells with less flat prone tires and a
steel frame.
