Rob, thanks for info re. the Tektros. They look like a good deal and readily available. On an M-bar, I don't think the thickness would matter much for me... I don't use the aero resting on the bodies position much, and when I do, I'm holding them sideways so I don't *think *it would matter. [RBW] Re: Adventures on Atlantis or what's the worst that can happen?
Glad there was such an easy solution. Unfortunately, I realized later that I agreed to loan my 84 Stumpjumper to a guy for our 90 mile backroad tour of Lake Pepin today. It will be his first time riding the bike, which is way too small for him. Maybe trading out my wheel was my way to subconsciously save him from a day of semi-extreme discomfort, without resorting to saying no (famous Minnesota passive aggressiveness). I guess I'll head in early, maybe get another wheel together before we leave. Or something. On May 23, 7:28 pm, EricP ericpl...@aol.com wrote: Decided this morning to go on the Hiawatha Cyclery weekly ride. The plan was about 15 miles of off road. Fairly flat rocky trail. So get out the Atlantis as that might be more approrpiate off road wit Big Apple 26x50 tires. Ride down to the shop. Notice that the rear wheel has been making an unusual thump when I'm braking. Okay. Figure it's a flat spot on the rim after riding 10 miles or so on a flat during the MN Ironman last month. Get to the ride. No problems. Ride itself. Well, let's just say the rain and the local clay/sand mixture next to the river caused some, uh, interesting moments. After walking the bike through the wost and using a stick to repeatedly clean the mud from the interface between tire/frame/fenders, things seemed fine. But there are instances where even the ample clearance of an Atlantis just isn't enough. Was only really a problem when the wheels refused to move. So far, not too bad. Then get back to the shop. Wait a bit for Jim to look at the wheel. Hmm. He tightens the flat spot. Which then appears in another place. Oops. That should not happen. So after a little more work and some logic, Jim figures it out. Take off the rim strip. Yup. The inside of the Velocity rim has split. Probably due to a combination of my running the rear at around 50psi and my weight. The latter of which had me running that pressure for correct sag. Luckily Jim was able to save the day. He had a built up wheel with a wider rim which now proudly resides on the back of the Atlantis. So day is saved. Ended up riding a total of 54 miles on the Atlantis today. The longest ride on it since getting the Sam Hillborne. Speaking of Mr. Hillborne, one was actually on the ride this morning. Seemed to handle the mud no worse than the other bikes. It was shod with Marathon Supreme 700x40. Looked to be another fine ride. Even making the day better - on the ride home, noticed a Quickbeam heading the opposite direction. With a Little Loafer up front. If you're on this list hi. As if that wasn't apparent from my waving. All in all, it appears the correct choice was to bring the Atlantis. Otherwise who knows where I would have been when the rim finally went kaput? Lastly - again, Jim, thanks. [RBW] Re: Adventures on Atlantis or what's the worst that can happen?
Eric, I'm glad everything worked out for you. I live in a town with only one paved road - the state road which goes through the center - so every ride begins and ends with dirt roads. My daily commute to work includes 10 miles of dirt roads This being Vt., not Ca., it rains regularly, like right now. So I have a chunk of experience at riding dirty wet roads. Several years ago I rode for a day and half on the gravel CO Canal trail in driving rain, with a bunch of friends. I rode 35mm pasellas and my dtr rode 37 mm pasellas, while everyone else rode mountain bikes. Our road bikes, with skinny tires easily outperformed the wider mt bike tires. I routinely ride 32mm tires around town, and switch up to a 38mm Avocet Cross tire in really bad conditions. I can imagine using a 50 mm tire on logging trails but haven't found them necessary for good results on dirt roads. Good luck with the new rim. [RBW] Re: Adventures on Atlantis or what's the worst that can happen?
Eric: First let me say I am sorry to hear about the problem, but glad things worked out for you. I do want to thank you for posting this. I have been experiencing a knocking in the front of my Big Apple shod bike when braking. I thought it was a problem with the brakes or fork and had been doing all sorts or readjustments to no avail. On reading your post, I took off the tire to see if perhaps my rim was cracked as well. It is not, but on replacing the rim, I noticed that the Schrader valve inner tube (I had a flat in a location where I could not locate a Presta valve inner tube big enough for the Big Apples so the bike shop I stopped at used a Schrader) reaches almost to the sides of the rim. I am going to try and pick up Presta inner tubes today. With luck they may remedy the problem. Thanks Eric. I wasn't questioning the rims, just interested in hearing the details. Aeroheads/heats are still my favorite skinny rim! :-) David On Sun, May 24, 2009 at 5:13 AM, EricP ericpl...@aol.com wrote: Dan, Was wondering about that. We've waved at each other before. Again, I'm not blaming the rim. More an issue of my use. Even with the wider rim, am running a lower pressure in both tires. To the other guys, uh, how to define this rain thing? [RBW] Re: More Gallery Photos: Jamil's Sam Hillborne
@Mike Yes, that setup would probably take both a 700c and 650B wheel. Pretty versatile. However, keep in mind that the 48cm and 52cm size Hillborne frames are intended for 650B wheels. Yes, a 700c wheel will work, but no promises about toe overlap or the effect of raising the bottom bracket. However, however, we will probably experiment with just such a setup this coming week ... just to see how it goes. I don't use the aero resting on the bodies position much, and when I do, I'm holding them sideways so I don't think it would matter. I'm going to try to find a replacement at the funky little shop I know, but if not, am thinking that the Tektros could work fine. [RBW] Re: WTB: Shimano 600 brake lever w/ built in quick release
From what I can see, they're both made in Taiwanhttp://www.rivbike.com/products/list/brakes?a=1page=all#product=15-122, so you mean the front company? Or do you live in Taipei? :-) :-) On Sun, May 24, 2009 at 10:36 AM, MichaelH mhech...@gmail.com wrote: I believe Tektro has licensed the design from Cane Creek. VERY useful for me when opening up the canti-brakes. Any leads on these? I can find plenty of old 600 series levers, but have never seen these around other than the set I have. The funky bike/junk store I found them out still might have some, but don't know when I can get out there to check it out (think I paid $5 at the time, should have bought more!!!). I've a Quickbeam and I'll ride. Rivs seem kind of rare in Austin. I know of two Rivendells in my neighborhood for sure. An Atlantis, and a Saluki (I think). Maybe grad students or professors as I see them between here and UT consistently. Serious looking commuters both. There's this guy doing the Tour das Hugel wearing a Riv jersey. Not sure if that's a Riv bike though : http://www.flickr.com/photos/jnewberry/3542807224/ It'll be interesting to see who and how many pipe up.
