[RBW] Re: Glove Recommendations?

2009-05-26 Thread EricP

As others have suggested, Spenco is a good choice. My favorite is the
Elite series. Not too much padding. And the leather palms are the
best of the bunch, in my opinion. A bike shop in Grand Marais, MN
clued me into the Elite. Although will use the Touring model if
nothing else is available.

Not a big fan of the Specialized gloves. For some reason, they
actually make my hand numbness issues worse.

Have also really been enjoying the Rivendell gloves. Both on
Albatross bars and drops.

Maybe carry two pair of gloves just to switch things around? I've
done that on some longer rides. But my general riding usually entails
carrying the kitchen sink. Along with everything else.

[RBW] Re: Glove Recommendations?

2009-05-26 Thread clevewheel

Another thing to consider is stretching your hand to open up the
carpal tunnel since it's the nerve that passes through there that gets
constricted and goes numb. Simply open your hand in a starfish shape
stretching the thumb especially as far as it will go back and down.
It's important to do this without using the other hand to force the
stretch as it's easy to cause damage doing that. I do it many times
per day with good results.

[RBW] Re: Glove Recommendations?

2009-05-26 Thread Phil B

Eric, et. al.

There's another consideration for me when choosing gloves: how they
smell after days of riding.

The Spenco crochet back and the Riv summer gloves both have passed
that test for me. They also provide ample padding - almost to much
padding for use with mountain grips or other large diameter bars due
to padding. The thought of touring ala moustache bars makes me
shudder, but these two would be my first choices given that bar.

[RBW] Re: Austin Rivendell Owners?

2009-05-26 Thread Jeff Newberry

My friend Chela's got a Saluki and an All Rounder (just repainted by
JB.) Our loading dock (in an obscure UT building concealed by a
cloaking device) is something of a Rivendell lair. My girlfriend has
a Bleriot (that remains in like new condition due to her diligence in
not riding it.) My Heron is sort of a Rivendell cousin and is quite
comfortable for long hauls. I recently picked up the entire run of
the Reader which was instrumental in my decision to order a custom. I
thought I wanted a Rene Herse, but the power of Grant's prose finally
won me over. Uh, plus I can't exactly afford an RH.

Definitely in favor of a Riv ride. A little off topic, I'm showing
The Flying Scotsman at Mellow Johnny's (4th and Nueces) tonight at 7pm
if any of you can make it. I'll be the dude in the Hetchins T-shirt.
I'd love to see your bikes!

Nice Bike Guv'nor! (I assume that it's a Pashley?)

I notice your bars on your path racer are at a rather rakish angle,
as others have mentioned what about leveling the bars out? Puts you
more upright which increases the wind resistence but may releive some
of the weight on your hands. I have also heard of riders on long
distance rides setting a timer on their watch to beep every X minutes
(5 10 15 whatever) as a reminder to change hand position. In theory
this will alleviate numbness cramps etc. It looks like you would have
at least 3 options or hand position on your current bars, well 4 if
you count riding no hands.

If you are using bar tape rather than grips I really love Specialized
bar PHAT tape -very plush.

Sounds like an epic ride. Let me know if you need any while in

[RBW] 20 Things Garage Sale Every Saturday at 10:20

2009-05-26 Thread John at Rivendell

We have some stuff to sell, but not enough for a full-blown garage
sale, so we are going to try a different approach.

Every Saturday, we will put out 20 garage sale-worthy things in the
driveway, and (hopefully) sell them. We will repeat every Saturday
until they are gone. We will shoot for a good mix of stuff: a few
bags, a few racks, maybe a saddle or two. Prices will be low, but
fair.

Saturdays are busy in the afternoon, but usually slow in the morning,
so this might a good way to kick off the day. We will try it this
coming Saturday, the 30th, and see how it goes.

Good idea, Seth. We used to do that 8 or 9 years ago. The tough part
is that garage sale-worthy stuff's worthiness is so subjective that
you really gotta see it in person. Trying to describe the condition of

always easy.

[RBW] Gloves

2009-05-26 Thread Eric Norris

Thanks to everyone who sent in their recommendations for generously
padded gloves. After reading everyone's emails and looking around
online, I settled on the Spenco Tour model. I couldn't find them at
any of my local bike shops (there are four here in Davis), so I have
two pairs coming via mail order.

I'll post a review after I have a chance to use them.

Thanks also to the list members who suggested a different bar
position. I've adjusted the bars as much as I can, but a truly flat
position was quite uncomfortable when I tried it.

The bike I'll be riding to Seattle is shown here:

[RBW] Re: Glove Recommendations?

2009-05-26 Thread Lesli

Good thread. I've been having problems with sore palms during
distance rides. I've been using the Spenco gel gloves but I find that
they cause my hands to get hot/sweaty during longer rides (causing
some abrasion on skin of palms). I've also used the Fizik gel padding
under bar tape but sometimes the extra-thickness can make for an
awkward grip.

I'm curious about the blue gel gloves recommended above.

If anybody has recommendations for gloves that have a thickly padded

  has the answer!

  Thanks in advance.

Hi Everyone,

I finally got my Riv Custom back from Joe Bell last week after a long and
torturous wait. Over the weekend, I was able to build it up and snap some
pics. I posted them on my blog with some details about the build:

Enjoy!

I've never had one fall off either when I didn't use a strap. But I do
use a strap now; it keeps any noise due to vibration from occurring
(for me). And, the soft velcro strap that I use leaves no mark.

Not worried about falling off, just rattling non-stop.

Hasn't left a mark in the paint since 2001.

Pros/cons? What's the draw? Are they splined Campy or Shimano?

[RBW] Re: For your viewing pleasure: My newly painted Riv Custom

2009-05-26 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hugi hubs are very well made. The ones currently in use are about 5 years old
and have never been serviced. They still run smooth. I have slightly older set
of Hugi hubs that have developed some play and need to have the bearings
replaced. The bearings are cartridge-type and are simply pressed into place
(with the right tools, of course).

The draw for these hubs are the weight, I believe, in addition to the quality
of the hub. I got them on the recommendation of the wheelbuilder (Joe Young of
Joe Young Wheels) and have not been dissappointed. They are also fairly quiet
which wasn't a prerquisite for me, but it is kind of nice to not sound like a
swarm of angry bees while descending.

You can get them in either the Campy or Shimano spline. I have one set of each.
I believe that it's fairly easy to convert from one to the other as well.

[RBW] Re: For your viewing pleasure: My newly painted Riv Custom

2009-05-26 Thread Joe Bartoe

Of course, on the way home my pump rattled and rattled and at one time seemed
to snap back into its place on the frame. At the first opportunity, I fished
the strap out of my bag and put it back on. Vanity is not a good reason for
leaving the strap off.

I don't know if this makes a difference, but my frame a 63cm seat tube with
about a 62cm top tube. Even the frame fit pumps tend to be on the looser side
on this frame. I think I'll err on the side of caution. After all, the frame
will be much less pretty if the pump ejects and sends me over the bars.
