[RBW] Hillborne query....

2009-11-22 Thread LouisvillePatrick
Wow. What a great group. I've enjoyed reading it's posts for some
time now. It's time I made a contribution of sorts...by posting a
question!

I've decided I need a 60cm Hillborne for spirited club rides. An
orange one specifically. My question is this: at 6'4" 275lbs and a
PBH height of 95cm, will it fit?? I own a 64cm Bomba. I tour with
it, I do club rides with it, I ride singletrack with it. I love it.
It's a bit big though...so..

Can anyone advise? Any taller riders around 6'3"-6'4" riding the Sam
60cm? How do you like it? If you chose against it, what did you get?

I'm grateful for any and all commentary.

Cheers!

[RBW] Re: lightest rear rack

2009-11-22 Thread Mark

+1 on the saddlebag. A Carradice Barley needs no rear rack on all but
the smallest of bikes and you can use
a Bagman for a larger bag like a Nelson Longflap or Camper.

Here is a link to my setup. I'm carrying everything for an extended
tour and the only rack on the bike is an Expedition Bagman.

This takes my vote!!!Nice looking Clive!

[RBW] Re: Internal Hub Efficiency: What the Experts Say

2009-11-22 Thread Mark

Would you find a very poorly maintained bike fun to ride, even slowly?
--one
with inefficient brakes, sluggish tires, excessively tight bearings,
badly
lubed chain, handlebar awry, saddle badly placed, left pedal broken,
derailleur mis-adjusted, and so forth? That's extreme, of course, but
the
extremes define the middle. All things being equal, of course an
efficient
bike is more fun, even if you are not trying to go particularly fast,
since
it does what you want it to do better than one that is not efficient.
And
the coincidence of "what you want" and "what you get" makes for fun!

Patrick "efficient cyclist and epistemologist" Moore

Patrick, I couldnt agree with your more. But the folks who yak on this
blog don't generally speaking ride cheap bikes that really are not
much fun. Unless thats all you know, then its different, But once you
ride a Riv or any other nice bike, it changes your perspective, and I
suppose that everything can improve, even a very nice bike, because we
all tend to get dissatisfied with something, so what do we do! We go
to twaeking, which is part of the fun!
Yes, watching the birds and the beautiful scenery would be a drag if
your bike was not set up right. I just don't think that the IGH is so
poorly effecient, that it would be irritating and make a person say
while riding" Boy I wish this bike were more effecient darnit!"
I have never experienced a difference betwwen my IGH and a derailleur!
But I suppose there is if you ask Lance!

RE: [RBW] Re: lightest rear rack

2009-11-22 Thread Steve Vesel

Sounds like a good project Charlie.

I wanted to do something similar for my protovelo, which has two sets of
braze-ons on the seatstays.

I didn't have access to a brazing torch, so in the end I ordered a set of the
nitto aluminium rack struts from Riv, and bought a metre of 10mm x 5mm aluminum
from my local hardware store. I bent the 5 x 10 into a U shape which forms the
"platform" of the "rack". Two holes drilled for the struts, and two at the ends
of the U for the upper seatstay mounts, and a fifth at the base of the U to
hold the rear mudguard with a 90 degree bracket. The mudguard keeps the bag
from contacting the tyre. Total cost about $25 and 45 minutes with a file and
drill. Weight is somewhere around 200 grams.

Don't have any pictures of this, but hope the above description makes sense.

Cheers

Stevy

Re: [RBW] Re: Reminder: NorCal Riv Ride: Mount Hamilton next Sunday

2009-11-22 Thread Anne Paulson
Four of us ended up making the ride up Mount Hamilton: Manny, on a
beautiful Bleriot equipped with a medium-sized Carradice bag; Todd, on
a blue A Homer Hilsen with a front basket, Benz, on a Della Santa
sporting a handsome Nigel Smythe saddlebag; and me on my scrappy
Atlantis, with a Carradice bag stuffed with warm clothes and food.
Everyone had fenders, which came in handy on the wet roads. I had
invited a few carbon-fiber weight weenie friends, but none of them
showed up. Just as well, because those delicate flowers would have
been afraid to ride on the dirt.

We headed up Mt. Hamilton Road to Grant Ranch, then turned off at
Grant Lake to go up Halls Valley Trail and Canada de Pala, returning
to Mt. Hamilton Road at Twin Gates. That dirt section is my favorite
way to go up Mt. Hamilton, quiet, and beautiful at all times of the
year.

Normally, on the section after the second retrograde Lick Observatory
taunts the unwary cyclist. "Almost there," it will whisper as you look
up at it, seemingly just around the corner when actually it's seven
miles away. Or six miles, or four miles... the Observatory always
looks like it's just above you. But today it was fogged in. I couldn't
even get a glimpse of it until just before we turned off Mt. Hamilton
Road onto the Observatory driveway.

I've been up on top of Mt. Hamilton when it was colder than today, but
the fog and wind drove us indoors to eat our lunches on the
comfortable benches. Then we bundled up, to head down and finish a
delightful ride. Thanks, guys.

A really fun ride, especially with some knobbies!!!

The amount of walkers/hikers compared to last time was amazing. We had to
be pretty careful dodging them (and their off-leash dogs) going up and
coming back down especially. Great to see the trails getting used!

I'm Looking to sell a never used (aside from test setup) Mountain
Hardwear Stiletto 1 Ultralight tent. I bought it a year ago withe the
plan of touring with it, but I am just too big a guy to be comfortable
in a 1 person sized tent. It is near - mint condition with no stains,
wear, etc. and has been stored out of sunlight in a climate -
controlled home since I've had it. Asking price is $180, shipped.

You can see the backcountry.com listing of it + reviews, here:

[RBW] Re: Tips for best methods w. applying "Ressurectio" Decals?

2009-11-22 Thread Michael Shaljian
Thanks for the tips guys. It looks like the soapy water method is the
one I'll be going with, seems to be the most forgiving if you don't
have a surgeon's steady hand.

Marty: What model Trek is yours, it looks like a supreme restoration.
I believe mine is a 1985 model 550. Not nearly as beautiful on the
lugwork as a Rivendell (I've also got a QB) but man do I have what
some might call an irrational attachment to it.

Happy riding y'all.

[RBW] Re: Tips for best methods w. applying "Ressurectio" Decals?

2009-11-22 Thread Marty
I have them on my old Trek, and if they are the "over" type, here's
what I learned:

Careful positioning is key,so take your time here. I played with the
position before taking the adhesive mask off, and was glad I did. You
don't get much of a second chance to reposition, although I was able
to lift one off after lightly touching the tubes with the adhesive-
backed decal. Take the adhesive masking off first - that will expose
the decal with the adhesive side. Once you have them positioned and
lined up, lightly rub them all over with your finger, then take a
burnisher of some kind (I used a wood dowel) to firmly adhere the
decal. It's kind of a feel thing here, but not too hard, not too soft.
If the paint is fresh, you'll want to be extra careful not to "dent"
the paint. Here's where you can get in trouble. If the entire decal is
not rubbed down firmly enough, portions of it may come off with the
backing as you lift it off the tube, so when its time to unveil it,
SLOWLY remove the backing and look to see that everything is stuck
down. After the backing is off, I even put a sheet of wax paper over
the decal and rubbed it down one more time. The seat tube wrap-around
decal takes extra time to ensure it wraps perfectly square to the
tube, otherwise it will not meet up in the back. It's easy to get this
one a little off kilter. Here's a few picks of my Trek Ressurectio
FYI. Good luck!

Re: [RBW] Tips for best methods w. applying "Ressurectio" Decals?

2009-11-22 Thread erik jensen
Once upon a time I was told to wet a surface with slightly-soapy water
before applying any sticky decal/stickers/nonsense.

You can smooth the sticker out and push most of the air bubbles (and water)
out from under it while you get a few seconds to adjust its placement. The
miniscule amount of water left dries shortly thereafter and the sticker
eventually bonds, give it several hours/a day.

Now, if you ruin your decals don't blame me, that's just what I'd do.

Cheers,

erik

[RBW] Tips for best methods w. applying "Ressurectio" Decals?

2009-11-22 Thread Michael Shaljian
I got a set of the "over" type Resurrectio decals for an old frame I
recently got powdercoated, but I'm hesitant to slap them on, for fear
of making some (as yet unknown) 1st timer mistakes. I'm guessing
temperature would be a critical thing here, i.e: apply in a room
temperature (70 degree) environment, but no other pitfalls immediately
come to mind.

This may just be a matter of common sense (i.e: go slow), but if
anyone has bits of wisdom I'd greatly appreciate 'em. It's been a long
haul bringing this one back from the dead, and I'd like to do the
finishing touch right. Thanks.
