Thanks Aaron!

The gears are only meaningful if you know the weight of the rider...
especially on such a long climb. At 265 lbs, I need all the help I can get!
:-D

I'm definitely considering it. Will try my new setup tomorrow; I also put
Randonneur bars to try them out and see if my hands are more comfortable.

The good thing about this ride is you can always turn around and have a
quick downhill ride back to the car!

I'll read the website info again so I don't ask so many questions that are
already answered there... If you go, look for an AHH with black Sram Rival
cranks...

[RBW] Re: Hillborne query....

2009-11-25 Thread Richard
The Sam Hillborne write-up in the last Rivendell Reader indicates the
Sam Hillborne fits up to a 94 PBH. Depending on your personal fit
preferences, the 60cm might or might not work for you. As suggested
by others, talk to the folks at Rivendell. Good luck.

Happy Thanksgiving.

orange one specifically.  My question is this:  at 6'4 275lbs and a
PBH height of 95cm, will it fit??  I own a 64cm Bomba.  I tour with
it, I do club rides with it, I ride singletrack with it.  I love it.
 It's a bit big though...so..

Can anyone advise?  Any taller riders around 6'3-6'4 riding the Sam
60cm?  How do you like it?  If you chose against it, what did you get?

I'm grateful for any and all commentary.

 Cheers!

I'm looking at other options, including, but not limited to the 67cm
AAH. It, like my 64cm Bomba, would have two top tubes. Not sure I
want both of my main rides to be double top tube, regardless of the
stiffness and benefit the extra tube would provide. Plus 2 more G's
would probably get me put out on the street.

I have to really think about this. Maybe the double top tube isn't
that big a deal..see, I'm already getting my head around it.

Now this little matter of 2 grand.

me it's not much of an issue. I climb seated most of the time and
seldom carry more than a tool kit and water on the Hilsen. The load

Finding a job right out of college is a blessing during these hard

To keep the bike similar to his original build, I went around building
the bike for it's functionally, in particular to the Carradice Barley

Re: [RBW] My Bleriot

2009-11-25 Thread Rene Sterental
Nathan,

I have found a great solution, although I'm waiting to get my Acorn Boxy Bag
before I set it up. Go to http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/bm.asp and scroll
down until you see it. Just to make sure you don't miss it, it's the adapter
for the BM lights to mount them on the center hole of forks when you have
cantilever or V-brakes. However, as you'll quickly assess, it's perfect for
mounting on the front tab of the Mark's rack; it's the image right before
the Ixon IQ Speed header. For now, I have the VO lateral bracket with a Paul
Gino light mount. It looks very nice and works very well as well and I have
it bolted to the rear lateral tabs that are free.

The BM adaptor allows the light to be centered on the rack; the VO/Gino
mount, allows the light to be on the side of the rack.

the bike for it's functionally, in particular to the Carradice Barley
bag. But I also wanted to give the bike some class so I added all the
Campy stuff. But don't let the Campy parts fool you this bike gets
ridden daily through everything, fire trails, mud, sand. I love this
bike but more importantly I love what this bike stands for in my life,
If you work hard in anything in life it will always work out.

It crossed my mind, the first leg of the trip is to Atascadero. I
will be bringing the Rawland this time, the views are beautiful up
there, but the roads are horrific in some areas. I had been riding an
old Eisentraut Model A with Roughy Toughys, but I was pushing my
limits on some of the loose potholed decents, and that is the paved
roads. That is why I was looking into a custom when the Rodeo was
released. I was quick to raise my hand, had budget, permission, and am
looking forward to 33mm of air between me and the road for the new
year.

The brewery was full of happy people enjoying great beer. Hope the Hilsen owner

2009-11-25 Thread James Warren
Oh Thank You! This article is great. I assembled my Rambouillet back on 2003
with this article nearby at all times, and it was a great experience. Now that
Rambouillet and I are in the Best Western in Paso Robles looking forward to an
early morning Thanksgiving ride before more weekend riding in Berkeley, Orinda,
and Woodside! (Atlantis is on the trip too with knobbies - I'll probably take
it on a ride in Tilden Park.) Yes, I'm thankful.

Hey all -

The Rivendell Reader #28 Article on One Way to Assemble A Bicycle -
showing a good, proven and simple assembly technique is now available on the
RBW Groups page - http://tinyurl.com/RR28-bikeassembly

I've also mirrored it on the RBW section of the Cyclofiend.com site.

Big thanks to SethV for supplying the data chunk, and of course the fine
folks at RBW who wrote and photographed the article to begin with!

[RBW] Re: My Bleriot

2009-11-25 Thread Angus
Nice job Manny; I love the use of Corkage.

I'm not a Campy guy, but my Rambouillet has mid-70s Campy brakes (from
a bike found in a dumpster)...Ghetto Campy?

Ride it into the ground!

Little story behind the frame and it's built up.

This bike represents my coming to adulthood. Her name is Bella and she
is my first built from my first paycheck from my first real job.
Finding a job right out of college is a blessing during these hard
times, so I figured the best way to invest my money is buying the last
bike I'll ever own. The frame was picked up from a fantastic person 10
miles from my work. Originally I was planning to buy his Italian Frame
but after some talking I found that we both had very similar ideals
when it came to biking, despite our huge age gap. He so happened to
have a frame he was planning to build up but never got to over the
years. After many months of begging he finally sold the frame to me.
To keep the bike similar to his original build, I went around building
the bike for it's functionally, in particular to the Carradice Barley

Size 63 in the Raw clear powder coat.  I can now be part of the
Owner's bunch with more than stuff from the odds and ends pages.  I
can say without a doubt that this is the most beautiful frame I have
 ever owned.

It has been a crazy wonderful week, Married my best friend, bike comes
early, and off on a family weekend with the Honeymoon to follow.  Back
in 10 days to take some better pictures and document the build, until
then enjoy the teaser shots, have a safe Holiday and get some saddle
 time.

Michael,

Where did you get, or how did you adapt that light holder to the front of
the Nitto rack? I'm on the lookout for good/great ways to use lights on the
Nitto front racks and I like your setup very much.

[RBW] Re: My Bleriot

2009-11-25 Thread manueljohnacosta
Thanks for the kind words. I don't baby this bike, it gets ridden
almost everyday. I'm just grateful to the original owner who was able
to sell me this bike. At first he had a very hard time parting with
the bike. But after many phone calls and e-mails he parted with the
frame, wheelset, and honjo fenders for a very good deal. After showing
him the pictures of the bike and it's adventures he's happy that the
bike being used for it's purposes. Interesting note about the campy
bar-end shifters they were originally for a 10 speed index campy, but
after some fiddling I was able to make them fiction, works like a
charm. Still waiting for some miscellaneous campy parts but the bike
is pretty much finished.

I'm on the lookout... but have not been succesful so far... :-(

However, several weeks ago I stopped by Jitensha Studio in Berkeley and saw
this in person. It's very nice and quite expensive, and I don't think the
light output is useful except perhaps to be seen, but it certainly looks
awesome, the quality is incredible and would look great on any bike with a
 Nitto front rack...http://www.jitensha.com/eng/whtsnew_e.html

The price was $125, and I asked if I could just get the bracket but was told
no. They are matached pairs and are only sold like that.

Still... this may be what you are looking for... :-)

Thanks, Rene. That is interesting, but what I'm hoping for is a classy
