[RBW] Freewheel Skipping

2010-02-01 Thread Angus
To set the stage, I'm happily stuck in a 7 speed / freewheel world,
understand how freewheels work, do all my own bicycle maintenance
etc...

I was riding my Atlantis yesterday and during one hard effort (it's
all relative) the freewheel skippedchunk! It's an old Suntour 7
speed freewheel that has probably given reliable service for decades.
I had this happen to another Suntour freewheel several years ago and
when it became too regular I replaced it. Which lead to the
question...

With a skipping freewheel, how long do you let it go before replacing
the freewheel?

Thanks!

Angus

P.S. As a point of trivial interest, with all other brands of
freewheels I have used I wear down the gear teeth first

Are the cogs clean? I found that build up of chain grime can contribute to

[RBW] Re: Freewheel Skipping

2010-02-01 Thread mark
My solution was to immerse the freewheel in some kind of cleaning
solvent, agitate to float any dirt or impurities away, dry the
freewheel out and wipe it down, then lube the pawls with Phil Wood
oil. Lubing is done by dripping the oil into the gap between the
outermost cog and the freewheel body.

Here's how to lube the freewheel while it's on the bike, as preventive
maintenance:

Am I right (or, in the alternative, completely misguided) in thinking that TCO
should not be a problem if you're not clipped in? (I suppose maybe that's why
the problem is called toe clip overlap.)

I've never encountered it, but am now considering either a 58cm or 61cm
Atlantis with big tires and sizeable (Woody's compound curve wooden) fenders.
Also, size 11 feet. But I will always ride it unclipped -- no problem w/ TCO

Well, being a cheap b*d I try riding in different gear
combinations to avoid the worn cog as long as I can, but really your
freewheel should be replaced now if you can't find replacement cogs.

[RBW] Re: Freewheel Skipping

2010-02-01 Thread Garth
Angus,

If the FW body itself skips from not engaging.. from my
experience it's from grease inside becoming gunked up inside causing
the pawls to miss engaging. I've had this happen with multiple Sachs
FW's because of the grease they use from the factory. Suntour FW's
always came oiled, but depending on age and maintenance, these can get
gummed up too. As Mark Stated .. you can soak it a solvent, or
flush it well with WD-40 which is a good solvent on it's own. Let
it dry overnite or with compressed air and lube with PW oil or any
Standard SAE 30 weight motor oil(much thicker than auto motor oil).

It depends on a number of things:

1. how much of your toe is over the front of the pedal
2. how sticky the toe of your shoes are to the fender
3. how slow you're going
4. how stiff your fender stays are.

I've had TCO cause the fender to touch the front wheel which causes
the bike to STOP and causes me to fall over all of this on platform
pedals.

Though, to be fair - it only really happens when I'm at a standing
start since it is hard to move your foot around too easily when you're
standing.

[RBW] Re: Freewheel Skipping

2010-02-01 Thread Chuck
I'll agree with Mark that you can probably stop the skipping and
extend the life of of the freewheel with some solvent, followed by
some lubrication. I've done this with both freewheels and freehubs
with varying degrees of success.

Seriously though...If this freewheel has indeed provided reliable
service for decades it is probably time to replace it. Pawls,
bushings, bearings and races do wear out. Cogs do too, although the
wear may not be readily apparent...

speed freewheel that has probably given reliable service for decades.
I had this happen to another Suntour freewheel several years ago and
when it became too regular I replaced it.  Which lead to the
 question...

With a skipping freewheel, how long do you let it go before replacing
 the freewheel?

 Thanks!

P.S.  As a point of trivial interest, with all other brands of

[RBW] Re: Cleaning a Winter Drivetrain

2010-02-01 Thread geezer
Hi Mark,

You don't mention whether they salt in your area or not. I live in
northern Michigan where they salt with a vengeance.

I can't ride anything nice in the winter here because of the salt.
Even when things clear up a bit, any puddles on the road are
corrosive. Kiss bare aluminum good-bye, cosmetically. Tiny paint
chips on a steel frame become rust spots in minutes. Its awfully
disheartening.

The only solution I have found is to ride a craigslist beater in the
winter. Old non-suspension mountain bikes work best. (We call them
DUI-cycles around here!) Clean them periodically at the quarter-wash
and use a non-sticky lube on the chain. I look for a bike with fender
eyelets, decent chainrings and cassettes and a smooth bottom-bracket,
then give them a tune-up in the fall. Don't fall in love with them,
because they're disposable! It amazes me sometimes how much of a
licking those old 6 and 7 speed bikes will take and keep on ticking.

Re: [RBW] Re: TCO on an Atlantis?

2010-02-01 Thread PATRICK MOORE
FWIW, I found that adding (Velo Orange, 35 mm aluminum) fenders to my
Motobecane actually helped with TCO, for, though they increased the TCO,
obviously, they also provided a smooth, curved surface to deflect the
offending toe clip (now, the offending toe, since I've switched back, fickle
as I am, to SPDs).

And FWIW again, the Motobecane is a fixed gear and I've had no real problems
with TCO; experientia docet -- as they say. It's just one of the many fixed
gears I've had with TCO. You get used to it.

Re: [RBW] Re: TCO on an Atlantis?

wrote:

Am I right (or, in the alternative, completely misguided) in thinking that
TCO should not be a problem if you're not clipped in? (I suppose maybe
that's why the problem is called toe clip overlap.)

Just for reference sake, it's important to define the following:

Clipped In means using some sort of cleated interface to secure your shoes
and pedals - SPD, TIME, LOOK, etc...

Clipless are the type of pedals that you clip into as above. It is an
honorable semantic effort to shift this phrase to Clip in. Even the
snowboarders use the phrase Click-in binding...

Toe Clips are the cages that extend off the front of the pedal. Once upon
a time, we nailed cleats to the bottom of our cycling shoes, so that the
rear lip of the pedal cage secured the shoe. Then we tightened down the toe
straps. Then we were clipped in. We were young and foolish.

Slipping a pair of cycling or street shoes into a Toe Clip is using toe
clips

All-righty then...

One of the quickest ways to get into trouble is to get your foot _inside_ of
the front wheel when stopped or at low speeds. Really, that's about the
only time it can happen, because you really shouldn't be turning the bars
that much unless you are coming down Repack on a Klunker in about 1978 or
thereabouts.

The best way to compound the problem is to be riding a fixed gear, because,
obviously, you can't backpedal and the momentum of the bicycle is driving
your foot.

The first time I did this (on my Dawes commuter, which has toe clips and
fenders), I very luckily dropped my heel, which pointed my toe up, creating
plenty of room for the wheel to swing back to center. Then, I seriously
panicked and froze up. Luckily, the freezing took place after the fact, and
as such did not end catastrophically.

I'm a great believer in practicing for disaster, and have since played with
this condition a bit to create some muscle memory for the future.

Depending upon the tension in your legs, the position of your foot, you can
definitely compound the problem if your reaction is to push down harder.
It's really a weird feeling when it happens, and your instinctive reaction
may not be correct.

It's not a bad idea to play with the clearances, so you know beforehand what
they are. Sitting stationary on the bike (with a spotter - some of the
hardest falls I've had were at 0 mph...) in a doorframe or next to some
support, set your foot forward and move the bars to create the problem.

The latter usually means body onto frame in one manner or the other.

Slightly OT. I recently came across a rather beautiful and incredibly
light Campy 6 speed freewheel. I want to use it on a set of wheels I
am building for my forthcoming 650b road bike. I recently decided not
to go with a NOS fluted Campy SR crankset on the bike after reading
too many accounts of the cranks breaking (I think you were on a recent
discussion of same on the IBOB).

Any one know whether the super light Campy freewheel is prone to pawls
giving way? I suppose Campy may have used somesort of super aluminium
alloy to come in so far under its competitor's weight. I would sure
hate to be proven wrong with a trip to the Emergency Room.

[RBW] 9speed to 8 speed cassettes

2010-02-01 Thread cyclotourist
A combination of pushing my bike up hill yesterday and the new 12-36
cassette in the latest Reader has me thinking...

Can I put 8 speed spacers between the cogs of a nine speed cassette and
simply leave off the smallest cog? My current 8 speed cassette is a 12-32
XTR (on a spider), and I'd love to get a 34 or even 36 low. I would never
need an 11T high, and very rarely use a 12T.

2010-02-01 Thread rswat...@me.com

David,
I did just that recently. Took apart a 9s cassette and made an 8s out
of it using spacers from an old 8s casssette. I used the lock ring and
outermost 12t cog from the 8s cassette too since the outer cog on the
9 was 11t.

It works just fine.

Re: [RBW] 9speed to 8 speed cassettes

2010-02-01 Thread Steve Palincsar
You can't just leave off the smallest sprocket. You need a first
position sprocket, i.e., a sprocket with a spacer built in; removing it
and leaving the 2nd position sprocket hanging in the wind won't do it.

The way you make a Century Special 13-30 is to start with a 12-27.
Remove the 12 and the 13 tooth sprockets. Replace the 13 with a first
position 13. Now add a 30T behind the 27. Install on a hub.

You can get first position sprockets. You can order them on Sheldon's
site if your LBS can't or won't do.

another thought would be the small chainring ... are you running a 24

Gearing is the bane of knobbied 700c wheels as most aren't used to
rock crawl. 29er's have been clamoring for better gearing for a while.
I suspect others will follow ShimaNo's lead... except for us 8

2010-02-01 Thread James Warren
24x34 is a really nice, really low low, even on a 700C dirt ride, but one of
these days, I'll be putting on one of those new cassettes to get it to 24x36,
especially on Atlantis. With this, I doubt I'll bother switching to the crank
bolt circle that allows 22's.

Actually, my MB-4 has a 110 BCD mountain crank with a thing from the 90's on it
called an Avid Adapter that allows me to mount a 20 tooth granny. I should set
up that with the new cassette, and have a 20x36 low on the 26 wheeled bike!

I highly recommend Sheldon's oeuvre on the topic,

In particular, go to the table halfway down, which lists the cog and
spacer thicknesses for everything through 10-speed.

[RBW] Re: Franklin Canyon Ride

2010-02-01 Thread Aaron Thomas
We did a ride like similar to this on a previous SoCal ride, but we
cut through Topanga (or was it Temescal?) in order to avoid so much
distance on PCH, which can be hairy with all the Mel Gibson-style
daytime drunks.

It would be great if we could figure out a way to tack on that kind of
distance, but do so in a way that keeps PCH exposure to a minimum.
Anyone have any ideas?

[RBW] Re: Franklin Canyon Ride

2010-02-01 Thread Brad Gantt
It would likely have been Topanga. I have done that variation as well.
The ride down Rambla Pacifica and Las Flores from the top of Stunt is
fantastic though. I don't like to spend too much time on PCH either.
You could also hop onto the Topanga fireroad on the way down which
adds quite a bit more trail and avoids even more of PCH.

[RBW] Warm Showers website

2010-02-01 Thread Kip Otteson
I might be the last person in the community to know about this but the
website warmshowers.org is really worth checking out. When I was a
member of the BMW Motorcycle Owners Association they published a book
every year that listed people that could help you out on the road with
bike trouble, put you up for the night, etc. This is a similar set-up
for folks on bicycle tours. The numbers of members in distant
countries is incredible. If you are planning a tour it's worth your
while.

Cheers.

  Hi Fausto,

I have a 58 Quickbeam that I am willing to sell.  I would expect to get a
nice price for this bike.  If you want a bargain we don't need to pursue it
but if you are looking for a great bike and one of the original (green)
Quickbeams, take a look at some photos and get back to me.

[RBW] TCO in general..

2010-02-01 Thread Grant Petersen
Seems to be a problem because it has a name/acronym. All it means is that at
speeds less than about 6mph, if you turn the wheel enough and time it just
wrong with your pedal stroke, your shoe hits the fender or tire. It's one of
those things that sounds worse than it is. It cannot happen at faster
speeds, because you don't turn the wheel that much except if you're doing a
near or full U-turn. When you go around a hairpin at 17 mph, you turn the
front wheel maybe 1.5-degees. It is ONLY at SUPER slow speeds and super
sharp turns that you can make contact.

I want to say this, because it even being a topic of discussion suggests
that there's something wrong. At the risk of being gross or something, it's
sort of like, I have mucus coming out of my face--what can I do? What's
wrong with me? And the answer is blow your nose. But TCO (a term I've
used a hundred times, by the way) is mucus coming out of face in a
different context.

In a bike like the Atlantis, or any fatty tire bike, the designer, at some
point, comes to a fork in the road. He can design for NO TCO and compromise
the elements of design that affect position and fit and ride; or he can
design for P, F, and R and accept some TCO.

Or, just go to a smaller wheel. But even that involves some value
judgements. A 58cm Atlantis with a 26--inch wheel would have a monster-long
head tube that would look funny and make the bike less suitable to load
carrying than the 700C wheel version (with a longer fork and hence shorter
head tube). As it is, the 58 is a really well triangulated frame, and the
bike rides like a demon (my opinion, but I am biased).

TCO ends up being a problem---in my opinion---only in theoretics, but not in
practice. THere are some builders who would disagree; and although in the
spirit of diplomacy and reasonableness and agreeing to disagree and all
that, I accept thatI can't understand it. To fear TCO or to regard it as
Dangerouswell, it's ust something that to me doesn't make any sense.

I'm not saying anybody here fears it. I haven't read all the posts and
prolly won't...I just clicked on this thread for the heck of it, read
something, and now.ahhhshouldn't have said anything! Will regret it
in the morning. Going to bed. Goodnight, Moon.

Best,

G
