I guess one can put race slicks on a Chevy Malibu if that is ones preferred tire, but wouldn't it make more sense to buy a Porsche? I'm not sure if that's as appropriate an example. For myself, I've raised my bars as I've switched to Rivendell bikes, but neither of them are above the saddle at this point. I think that puts me as a bit of an outlier. ;^) For a goodly number of folks who wanted to ride a road bike in years past, they were told that they'd get used to the bars being low. That running the bars below the saddle was the way it was. Maybe 20 years ago, running the saddle and bars at the same height was not common on a road bike. It is one of the reasons that mountain bikes caught on - suddenly people could use a comfortable position to ride. It took a darned long time for that to ease into the popular acceptance on road bikes. I will say flat out that the Rivendell bikes I have (QB and Hilsen) handle better than any other road (or cross) bike I've owned. There's no drawback to dropping the bars, if that is what you are used to or comfortable doing. The Rivendell designs allow a pretty amazing range of positions. Maybe that's the difference - it strikes me that GP designs a bike that allows for comfortable upright position - whether that's nearly upright, 45 degrees or flat backed. - J -- Jim Edgar cyclofi...@earthlink.net Cyclofiend Bicycle Photo Galleries - http://www.cyclofiend.com Current Classics - Cross Bikes Singlespeed - Working Bikes Gallery updates now appear here - http://cyclofiend.blogspot.com I thought the idea was to waste the rest of our lives together.. -- Cyril, Breaking Away -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Riv frames work great with drop bars
But again, it's just silly to think that Rivendells don't work well with drop bars and even lowish drop bars, just as it is silly to imply that lowish bars are only for racing. Perhaps before calling me silly, you may have had the sense to look at the original post and figure out my point. The OP says he cannot get bars low enough on a Riv. You say Riv can accommodate many bar positions, including lower positions. Given this fact we both appear to agree upon, I quite sensibly assumed the OP wants his bars somewhere down in the vicinity one sees on track bikes. A position which I think people can sensibly agree is meant for racing and for which Rivendell bikes are not designed. What did we jump back to February and I missed it? Low bars work fine with Rivs, at least the four I've owned do. What do low bars (by Grant's massively high standards) have to do with racing? Nothing, as far as I can tell; some people like bars even with or lower than the saddle because it feels more comfortable; end of story. Of course, there is low and low. I wouldn't buy a Riv with sloping tt and extended ht in order to lower my bars six inches below saddle, but a modest 2 is perfectly fine and in no way racing. And I have short arms for my height, so low bars aren't simply a means of accommodating a weird build. -- Patrick Moore Albuquerque, NM For professional resumes, contact Patrick Moore, ACRW at resumespecialt...@gmail.com (505) 227-0523 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Rivendell and drop bars and reach
Do feel that my Sam Hillborne works well with drop bars. However, the riding position is eversoslightly longer than I'd call absolute perfect. But my own setup for bar reach is based on this type of thinking - http://tinyurl.com/yokuh9 It's the way I did things before was even aware of that Mr. Moulton's post on the subject. Yes, my bars are above saddle height. Although have lowered things recently on the Hillborne so they are only about 2 to 4 cm above saddle level. With a 10cm Dirt Drop stem on my 56cm Hillborne everything is close enough. In retrospect, a 60cm frame would probably look better (less seatpost showing). However, the reach would be too long. As to the Hunqapillar, the extra 1.5cm in top tube length on the 58cm would have required me to look for a 7cm stem, if I was going to use drop bar on that bike. Or, probably, run with the bars 4 to 6cm above the saddle height. Did straddle a 62 (or 61?) cm Quickbeam last year. With an 11 or so cm stem. The reach had my arms totally straight out and was extremely uncomfortable. Although that should be the proper frame size for my measurements. Am 5'11 with a PBH of 89. Am also overweight. So maybe my own setup preference is due to less ability to really tuck down and get into a nice flat back aero position? RE: [RBW] Riv frames work great with drop bars
Hi Grant--thanks for jumping in. I can confirm your statements--I have three Rivs, a Heron road, a Rambouillet and a Saluki and the seat tube angles and top tube lengths vary but they all fit the same (very well) with drops. Same bars (Noodles) and the stem extensions are within a cm of each other... Steve -Original Message- From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bu...@googlegroups.com]on Behalf Of Grant Petersen Sent: Wednesday, May 05, 2010 5:54 PM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] Riv frames work great with drop bars It seems to me that because of the long top tubes most of Rivendells frames are not designed for drop bars. With the long top tubes you need bars that come back towards you to provide a comfortable reach. UnSo! Terribly, terrifically unso. The Top Tube Ruse in RR--40/ 41? talked all about that, but I realize people come and go and land late and may skip over or miss, but basically, it's like this. Forgive lack of detail in these explanations: Shallow seat tubes neutralize long top tubes. We have shallow seat tubes. Higher bars super-'eutralize long top tubes. We're the Cosmos champs in that cat. As bars get higher, your arms become more horizontal, and that makes them longer (effectively, not literally). Tall quill stems always help, but with our bikes--as much as I likem we gottem, they're less necessary than they are with a '73 Colnago, or '84 Centurion Ironman, etc. I cannot image more drop-bar friendly bikes than ours. I wouldn't design a bike that wouldn't work fine with a drop. With appropriate-sized stems for the size. Granted, my personal Sam is a 60 with a 7stem, and that's borderline funky, but that's on a 62.5 top tube, and I'm a mere 5-9.9. Re: [RBW] Query Concerning Rim Width and Tire Size
The important numberfor the rim is the inner width, the spacing between the inner edges of both bead hooks. To measure it the tire must be off. Typically a tire shouldn't be less than maybe 8 mm wider than this number or more than maybe 20 mm wider - I don't know the precise numbers. But it's definitely based on the inner width. Few bicycle rims, if any, have inner widths as large as 28 mm. On Thu, May 6, 2010 at 12:08 PM, GeorgeS chobur...@gmail.com wrote: I am very foggy on the relationship between rim and tire size. [RBW] Re: Riv frames work great with drop bars
My Atlantis' primary mission is touring, and it's equipped with drop bars, set about at seat height. I like drops for the variety of hand positions and ability to sit fairly upright when on the tops as well as getting low when bucking a headwind. The relationship of seat- pedals-h'bars was based on my previous bike but of course has been adjusted over time (age will do that to you). The 58 61 Atlantis overlap my PBH so I went 58, knowing I could make it bigger easier than smaller. Only minor adjustment of stem seat post height were needed to get it comfy. When I'm on the bike all day, every day on a tour, it's important to be able to change position, sit up, etc. to keep comfortable. Of course, stopping for coffee photos helps a lot too. Occassionally I think about a flat bar for ease of packing shipping the bike, but am reluctant to give up the positioning variety of drops. Judging by the variety of set-ups on cyclofiend's site, Rivs are pretty adaptable, with about any bar you can name being used by someone. dougP On May 6, 5:57 am, Frederick, Steve frede...@mail.lib.msu.edu wrote: Hi Grant--thanks for jumping in. George: You mention taking your Atlantis on a road trip. Is this a bke tour or are you taking the bike along with you on a vehicle trip? Think about what you're going to use the bike for and whether you need to ride it every day to get where you are going. Those constraints are important in your choice of tire. The cliffhanger is one of the widest rims around at 28mm outside width. I would not ride anything narrower than a 32mm tire on a rim that wide. Hampsten seems to be trying to build that market or at least serve what little crossover there may be between race-oriented riders and off-road ramblers. They recently released a model called Crema, which is a tig-welded production frame based on the Strada Bianca geometry. And with the straight-blade precisa style fork, it fits right in with the contemporary racy aesthetic while not compromising on clearance for Jack Brown-sized tires: http://www.hampsten.com/bikes/crema/ On May 6, 12:48 pm, Michael_S mikeybi...@rocketmail.com wrote: I know it's custom and can have in anyway you want. The Rivendell Saluki was named for the dog, a strong, swift runner over varied terrain. An attractive canine, it looks kind of like a long-haired greyhound. I remember no more detail about Grant¹s intent. I had the privilege of designing the decals and badges for it under the direction of John Price, who owns both bike and dog, and who helped me make the headbadge image look less like a bloodhound and more like a Saluki. Re: [RBW] Re: Bicycle Repair in Chicago
Tino, there's a lot of overlap between RBW, BL, and (in case you don't know it yet) Internet BOB. Same really for Classic Rendezvous, but your question would be marginally appropriate over there due to the rules, it tries hard to stick to pre-1984 upper end road bikes. You've got a few good inputs, but I think the biggest variable is, what part of Chicagoland is accessible to you? If you live near Evanston, it makes no sense to have to take your bike to South Halsted. Similarly if you live southeast, like Pullman, it'll be hard to get ot any of these places. If none of the suggestions you've gotten so far are usable, let us know, maybe we can dredge up some more. Re: [RBW] Rivendell and drop bars and reach
Thanks for posting that link to Dave Moulton's thoughts on TT/stem length. Fascinating. I think this explains why, at 6' - 2 and size 10.5 shoes (small for my height) I prefer a shorter stem Hope I can get my 62cm Saluki (sized right for PBH) set up properly. Rob in Seattle On May 6, 2010, at 3:32 AM, EricP wrote: Do feel that my Sam Hillborne works well with drop bars. [RBW] Re: Salinas to Templeton (near Paso Robles)
Christine: +1 for the coast over the inland route, but between the Monterey Hostel and M-6 in San Simeon there are no inexpensive lodgings, and about 120 miles of riding. I came north on the inland route a couple of years ago. Routes paralleling 101 are easy but there is one stretch around a military facility where you're on the freeway. Not for long but it's noisy. We went from Paso Robles to King City in a day that was short but had PM headwinds. In your direction those will be tailwinds so you can get from M-6 in King City to M-6 in Paso in a day, even planning moderate mileages. dougP On May 6, 1:42 pm, Jeff Feldstein cygoo...@gmail.com wrote: I've done this route before (actually San Jose to Santa Barbara). [RBW] Re: Top Ten Names for the next Rivendell Bike
Rocinante, or Rose, was the name of Dervla Murphy's bike in Full Tilt, IIRC. Dervla would also be a great bike name and a suitable honor. [RBW] Re: Top Ten Names for the next Rivendell Bike
An undeniably cool name and worthy woman to commemorate, but perhaps a mixed message for a bike. At least one biographer quotes her as saying to her daughter: You must not ride too much on your bicycle. [RBW] bombadil fork / racks?
ok, so this Bomba i have is pretty lovely, but i'm at a loss as to how all the eyelets and screwintoable bits there are on the fork could best be used. i've got no racks currently.. would just having a front one affect the handling adversely? assuming smallish front panniers or a top bag, 80% city riding. and.. will any nitto w adjustable arms really work on the drilled fork crown? i've got an R-15, and doesn't seem the brakes-connecting-cable will interact well with a rack there... what racks work well? and assuming those eyelets on the back-side of the fork are for... a lowrider rack? so... anyone got pics of enracked Bombadillage? or suggestions? :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
