[RBW] Re: FYI: VO 107mm BB and Sugino XD2 crank incompatibility
This thread is kinda funny in light of another recent discussion re: external bearing triples, during which one commentator expressed reluctance to fight with various standards and incompatibilities of external BBs. Never used a VO BB, except the French ones, but I've used XD cranks hundreds of times with shimano, tange, truvativ, and phil BBs. Never a problem like this. I'd suggest trying a different bb. On Jul 6, 12:50 am, oldmangabe oldmang...@gmail.com wrote: I am putting my money on it being the crank not being machined properly. On the drive side, at the square taper interface, the cranks should be turned down a bit so that one can run a short BB spindle. This will allow the cranks to snug into the driveside bb cup without binding the crank to the cup, or to the bearing. I've seen maybe 3-4 Sugino cranksets, all of them being of the XD variety (Sugino's basic 110 and 130 bcd crank design sold to various importers) over the last couple of years not have this machining. It basically causes the crank to bottom out on the driveside cup much too soon, as the original poster has pointed out. If one uses a longer spindle BB, then it does not happen, but when you are trying to get a good chainline (singlespeed, multispeed) or a lower Q-factor, this can happen with an improperly machined crank. It sounds like you should contact Rivendell about getting a replacement crankset. Good luck. Gabe On Jul 4, 7:43 pm, Thomas Lynn Skean thomaslynnsk...@comcast.net wrote: Hi! I tried to mount a Sugino XD2 crank from RBW on a 107mm VO bottom bracket and couldn't make it work. Mounting the crank onto the spindle, before I had slid it on far enough to get the appropriate torque on the crank bolt, the inner portion of the crank arm interfered with the bottom bracket itself! At first when I was having trouble turning the cranks I thought... hmmm, did I ruin a bearing or something? But no, it was just that the crank arm was literally jammed up against the bottom bracket itself. Just plain weird. Anyway, I suspect both the VO bottom bracket and the XD2 crank I have are perfectly fine normal examples of their kind. And I suspect the VO BB is a fine product in general, as is the XD2 crank. They just didn't work together for me. The only other bottom bracket I had lying around was a 113mm Truvativ, which turns just fine for now. When it shows age, I may replace it with a larger VO. I wasn't really very close to the required torque on the crank when it came in contact with the bottom bracket. It isn't obvious that a 110mm VO bottom bracket would work. I suspect a 113mm would, though. Perhaps I should just get the 107mm from RBW. This would give me the intended chainline. However, I'm going to eyeball carefully my current set up. I haven't concerned myself with Q-factor up to this point; longer spindles on a bottom bracket don't bother me as long as the chainline is reasonable for how I ride. I need to give that more thought. I may even go with a 118mm BB if the chainline is okay. At that point, the crank arms might just slip right past the two-legged Pletscher kickstand when its deployed. That basically turns the kickstand into a work stand. (That and a couple of ceiling-mounted $3 bicycle hooks were the only stand I used to the build the bike up with in the first place.) Anyway... just in case anybody else tries the 107mm VO BB with an XD2 crank. I wouldn't expect it to work right out of the box. Re: [RBW] Time For New Riv Wool Jersey
Last Rivendell one was the green with maroon band. Everytime I wear that, it inevitably gets positive comments. One of the really non-standard and beautiful color combos which Riv came up with. To my eye, it has a really timeless quality. My old blue one has a hole in the chest area I need to mend. Hmmm. Grey/Blue with orange band? Re: [RBW] Time For New Riv Wool Jersey
i'd really love a NON-wool one.. i'm mildly allergic to wool, and even the super-soft longsleeve NZ wool shirt i bought from Rivendell produced a lovely rash after wearing it for one ride. so ya, i know how good wool is.. but some of us might actually prefer something else in a fabric. cheers, andrew -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Today's ride (with special guest appearance by Cyclotourist!)
So finally I woke up to a nice sunny day here in Portland. Seems like it's taken forever for summer to start here. Cyclotourist (David E.) is up visiting friends with his son Jake and we were able to arrange a ride through Forest Park. Took off from my house in N. Portland across the St Johns Bridge, up Germantown Rd and over to Saltzman and into Forest Park where I met up with David, his son Jake, and his hosts Arlo and Bryn. We had a nice easy ride through Forest Park and even took in a bit of singletrack. I've been a member of this group for 3yrs now and it was nice to meet another group member face to face for a ride. Riv content: Arlo rode David's old Quickbeam with Jake as a stoker (Team Cheetah!), David rode his custom Rivendell All-Rounder, I rode my Hilsen and Bryn rode her full suspenson mtn bike but apparently owns a custom Rivendell road. Re: [RBW] Today's ride (with special guest appearance by Cyclotourist!)
Having a GREAT time in the City of Roses. Yesterday was mountain bike racing where I got to see and cheer on Beth H. HUGE weekly races, at least by my standards. Tons of families with kids out there. Lots of women racing, many, many, many kids out there. Everyone was really nice, no macho-testosterone stuff going on that I noticed. Today was a ride in Forest Park, a urban park minutes from downtown. I had an offer from my friend to pull the boy on the Piccolo for the day, so how could I resist (my former QB at that) Mike may have converted my hosts into Randonneuring, we'll see. Went to lunch at Hopworks where I had an Imperial ESB and then a Stout. The afternoon was a bit of a blur after that, but stopped by to see Beth @ Citybike and got the grand tour, only to be interrupted by the UPS Guy. Now back home, ready to kick back and watch Stage 3 of Le Tour. So far, so good!!! Here are pix of today: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/archives/date-posted/2010/07/06/ And here are some from yesterday's racing event: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/archives/date-posted/2010/07/05/ On Tue, Jul 6, 2010 at 3:12 PM, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: So finally I woke up to a nice sunny day here in Portland. [RBW] Re: Brand V bag suggestion
Good suggestions - all. Thought about the Carradice bar tube. And Thomas had a good suggestion off-list. Either might happen. As the bike doesn't have a dynohub, and it is ridden before and/or after the sun is up and about, prefer a bag that sits below the bar. Easiest method, really. No rear rack neither. Instead the bike sports a Carradice SQR tour. And eventually a Revelate Designs Tangle Bag. Hence wanting to keep with the noir theme of the bags. Still, would like to see Brand V with the grey/black canvas used on the Sackville. That's my dream. [RBW] July 5 ride
As mentioned in another thread, rode the Sam Hillborne for 71 miles yesterday. Nothing too great for that, except the weather was hot, muggy and ended up storming. Basically started the day wanting to go some place I hadn't been since getting back on the bike. So it was to a southern part of the Twin Cities. Well, that lead to a ride along the Mississippi, which lead to a ride along the Minnesota River, which lead to a hunt through the streets of one of the Twin Cities. Where I actually got lost getting off of really beat up roads. Which then lead to a stop at one of my favorite coffee shops. The stop came about beacuse it looked like rain. Or more specifically storms. Well, that didn't materialize (hah!) So continued riding back up to Minneapolis, then home. All was calm. Until about a quarter mile from home. Then it started raining. By the time I got home, it was pouring. Deluge, gully-washer. Got home just in time. So, still have never ridden a century. Not that I was going to yesterday. But it had crossed the mind when riding early. All in all, though, was a good ride. Three counties and multiple cities. As always, the Sam Hillborne handled the entire episode with aplomb. The only minor complaint is after getting used to wider tires this year, 700x40 seem positively skinny. Oh, and that Brooks might have to go. Too many episodes of rubbing me the wrong way. Specifically the frame, rivets on the right side. Re: [RBW] July 5 ride
In a similar vein, I rode my Saluki 74 miles yesterday. Just wanted a change of venue so we rode to a Dari-Delite in the next county. Stiff headwinds all the way home and hills (as we went out on US 31 with it's long gradual grades (and silky pavement) but returned via rough and steeply hilly country roads) I was on my positively skinny GB Oursons which are good all surface shoes for the hound dog. Hot and humid, so I mounted the 3rd bottle cage and brought extra, just in case. I drank every drop of it. The bike was great. The rider still needs work though. [RBW] FS: 65cm Rivendell Redwood
I've come to the hard decision to sell my Redwood. It's in great shape, ridden well but not abused, about 3,000 miles on it over almost 6 years, never been crashed. I'm asking $1450 for it (plus actual shipping, if needed), complete minus saddle and pedals, and will entertain reasonable offers. I've written up a full description with photos on my blog (below), let me know if you have any questions. http://wjc.fidean.net/log/2010/07/06/rivendell-redwood-for-sale/ Cheers -- Bill Connell St. Paul, MN -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Today's ride (with special guest appearance by Cyclotourist!)
Looks like lots of fun. Can you comment more on the trail-a-bike attachment? Is that something custom made? Thanks in advance! --e On Jul 6, 3:12 pm, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: So finally I woke up to a nice sunny day here in Portland. [RBW] Re: My first attempt at a cycling video
The clip that included the train was about 3 minutes long. It was a long train, and just as it was almost done, an even longer one came the other direction. Thanks all for the kind words. [RBW] Now: Kid-back bike attachment thingies
I'd love to! It's a Burley Piccolo.http://www.amazon.com/Burley-Piccolo-Trailercycle/dp/B002NVLFW6 No longer available, but you can find them used on ebay and CL. I unequivocally, 100% hands down recommend it. Very solid mounting on the proprietary Moose rack that comes with it. It has gears that let the kid learn to fiddle with the shifty bits without having to steer. When the kiddo is pedaling you can go like a rocket, too! I tried the Adams kind and hated it. I presume but can't confirm if there are other seatpost mounted options that are better or if the Adams models have improved (it was maybe a 10 y.o. model I had). They go for around $200 used. Kinda' rare, but they're out there. One in Boulder FS right now at a screaming deal: http://boulder.craigslist.org/bik/1816648619.html Hope you can find one! Re: [RBW] Re: Today's ride (with special guest appearance by Cyclotourist!)
Yeah, have to try to say hi to folks when I'm 1000 miles closer than usual. Might get to see Lynne if the planets align (she's maybe a mile or so away!) Possibly Philip, but he lives out in the boonies. They're just little visits, but real cool to see and meet a person that you've corresponded with over the years, and see their pics on flickr or blogs. For good or bad, many of us get to know strangers on the interwebs better or as least as well as our neighbors. It's nice to confirm that they're pretty cool in the real world as well!
