I've used the Hennessy for the last 3 or 4 years. I like it for
warm/hot camping. You can get an expensive quilted underblanket for
it, but without it, I don't like using it when it's in the 40's or
below, as a pad likes to slide around. So I'll bring the Hennessy for
warm summer night camping.

Alex Wetmore has refined the hammock set up to about 4 minutes. He
keeps it in a tube with the under quilt attached. He also improved
upon the knot/hanging solution. The only time I can beat him in the
shelter set up is when I am using a bivvy, which is my favorite cold
(under 45f or so) weather solution.

His hanging solution is doc'd here: http://alexwetmore.org/?p=610

I ride the 52 Ram, and a 50 Saluki. The top tubes are the same: 53 cm. I also
would ride a 50 cm frame in a "normal" 700c wheeled bike. (I ride larger frames
using 650B conversions, but that's another e-list entirely!)

One thing I find odd about Rambouillets is the odd ump in size. I am
most comfortable on a 53 but should be fine on a 54. But the next
size lower is not only 2cm smaller but also has 26" wheels which will
cause a pretty big drop in standover height. So a 52 would definitely
100% be way to small.

I don't know if it's "wrong" or not... But IIRC and if I understand
the picture, it does not have the magic slanted rear dropout that

Does anyone else remember it that way?

Looks good with the blue, but it might just be a bit over the top

For some reason, tan looks really good with the Hilsen blue (original darker

Johnny,
That is great. I was encouraging the Roadeo, but when you mentioned that price
difference, I realized that you are getting tremendous bike for such a deal.
The Rambouillet is one of the best road bikes ever made, and you're going to
love it. In fact, the only thing that kept me from getting a Roadeo is that I
already had a Rambouillet.
Riding a Rambouillet lightly loaded for a couple day motel tour is riding
heaven. Here, you'll see room for a couple days of clothes in the foppish tweed:

[RBW] Re: A Tale of Two Atlantises

2010-09-24 Thread jose
Ha, I meant the "tale" to be illustrated in the photo by how different
two Atlantises can be.

But I'll bore you with the backstory since you're asking!

I bought the black 58cm (700c) Atlantis used, about 3 years ago. It
has seen many a configuration - from 32mm paselas to 2.1" nanoraptors,
from fenders/racks/baskets to nothing. Lots of bike-geekery fun has
been had.

This spring, I started looking for a 26" tourer to be used mainly on
dirt. I planned on doing a GDR trip this summer (but the universe had
other plans). After looking at many options, I was happy to discover
with my PBH of 85cm, I could fit the 56cm (26") atlantis.

If I could get so much versatility out of one Atlantis, I thought two
would be great. I realize I could have gone lighter with a Homer or
heavier with Bombadil, but the middle-of-the-road Atlantis suits me
well. And like I said, I wanted 26" wheels.

So I ordered my 56cm new. To dial it in before any big rides, I have
used it as my daily-driver with bags and racks on it, and a fairly
upright riding position. The 58cm is currently set up as the "fast"
bike, ie., for unloaded rides.

The 56cm feels like a mountain goat, the 58cm a horse.

The 56cm has Schwalbe Extremes 2.25". Although I purchased them for
being off the grid, I find they work well in the city too. They take
bumps really well of course, but they also don't feel slow. These big
fat 26" tires spin up/down quickly compared to my big fat 29" tires.

Yep - I borrowed the term "farkle" from motorcycling, meaning
"accessories". Its a combination of "function" and "sparkle" I think.
I must have learned it during my brief flirtation with motorcycling,
before I came back to my senses and stuck with bikes. :)

[RBW] FS: Grand Bois Cerf Tires & Abus Lock

2010-09-24 Thread Johnny Alien
I got these Grand Bois tires on here lightly used a month or so back.
I mounted them up to my RB-2 but then made a decision to sell the RB-2
so I took them back off. They were in good shape when I got them and
I only put about 10 miles on them if that. 700C x 28.

$55 shipped

I also have an Abus lock I got from Rivendell. I mounted the holder on
my Bleriot thinking I would use it but I really don't. Pretty much
brand new.

$50 shipped

Re: [RBW] Anyone hear ever use a camping hammock?

2010-09-24 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I use a Hennessy for camping. The link below has an image it set up with the
larger 'hex' fly. I've found that, at least here in Hawaii, the larger fly
isn't really necessary so I use the regular one for the most part. The
weight isn't that important to me but the smaller one packs up smaller as it
all fits in the 'snake skin.'

Because it's generally so warm here I use a one of those cheap fleece bags
which roll up about the size of a football. The only complaint I have is
that sometimes I used to wake up with a cold back because there isn't much
between you and the air. I've taken to carrying one of those small silvery
windshield shades to use as a pad. They weigh next to nothing and make a
great insulator. Since I discovered that trick I've been quite happy.

Indeed just writing about this makes me want to take off for the weekend.
:-) I won't be able to this weekend though because on Sunday I'll be in the
Honolulu Century Ride on my Quickbeam.

[RBW] Re: Anyone hear ever use a camping hammock?

2010-09-24 Thread bwgride
I use a hammock regularly while biking and hiking. Last year I used a
Hennessy (with a larger tarp) while touring Banff and Jasper National
Parks. I then switched to a Warbonnet Blackbird double layer 1.1oz
hammock, and now I have since switched to a homemade double-layer
hammock and bug-net. The Hennessy is a nice, solid, and well-made
hammock, but I prefer top entry over bottom entry. The Warbonnet
Blackbird is an excellent hammock and gets great reviews on the
Hammock forums (linked below), but I prefer my homemade hammock over
all others because I made it and also because it is just as
comfortable as the Warbonnet.

If you have any sewing skills, even if your skills are poor like mine,
making your own can be satisfying.

To get the latest information on hammock camping and ideas, check
these forums:

If you have a tale to tell about them, I'd read it. Did you buy them
both new, deliberately wanting these two different bikes? How
different did you want them to be, expect them to be? Did you set
them up deliberately from the ground up to make them be different?
Did it work out exactly as you intended, or were there surprises?
When do you ride the 700C one? When do you choose the 26" one?

And what's a farkle?

[RBW] FS: Complete Nitto Albatross Cockpit, Technomic Stem, DuraAce Bar-End Shifters, DiaCompe Brake Levers, Cables, Cork Grips, Brass Bell

2010-09-24 Thread Curtis Schmitt
I am selling the cockpit from my 59cm Romulus: http://tinyurl.com/2wnuxqd

I purchased it with Albatross bars and while I really love them for
around town and like them for commuting, they haven't been working
well for me on 15+ mile loaded rides which is primarily what I want to
use the bike for now. I need the leverage of drops and to tuck away
from the wind for distance rides, so I'm converting to what I know and
love: Nitto Noodles.

This package includes:
Nitto Albatross Handlebars - $68
(http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/nitto-albatross-aluminum-bar/16-127)
Nitto Technomic Stem, 26.0 x 120mm - $52
(http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/nitto-technomic-standard/16-047)
DiaCompe SC-7 Brake Levers - $20 (could not find link)
9sp Shimano Bar-End Shifters "Light Action" - $92.00
(http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/shimano-bar-end-shifters/17-098)
Cork grips, possibly from VO - $10.50
(http://www.velo-orange.com/corkgrips.html)
All x-long brake and shifter cables plus gray Jagwire L3 hoses,
required for Albatross - $30
(http://www.rivbike.com/products/show/long-shifter-cable-and-housing-kit/17-136)
Brass Bell - $15 (http://www.velo-orange.com/jabrbe.html)
Total new = $287.50

I'm asking $160 shipped to CONUS paid via PayPal. I can ship out first
thing Monday AM via FedEx Ground.

I am 95% sure these are the aluminum Albatross bars, and that the
Technomic is 120mm +/- 10mm. I am selling the stem because it will
definitely be too long for me once I put drops on. I did lay the bike
down once in the rain, so there are scrapes on the right bar-end
shifter. It wasn't a terrible crash, and there was no damage aside
from the aesthetic blemishes on the right shifter. Hopefully this is
fairly reflected in my asking price for the set-up. I will try to
confirm all specs above and take detailed photos of right bar-end
shifter, if this hasn't sold yet.

Please reply off-list.

Thanks,
Curtis

[RBW] Re: Salt Lake City Bicycle Commuter Hub

2010-09-24 Thread BykMor
Turns out to be somewhat Riv specific, as I will be riding my purty
green Racing Riv Ram at the grand opening ride this Saturday. I'll try
to take some pics. Hope to see you there, Darin.

[RBW] Re: WTB Bridgestone MB-1 or Mid 80's Stumpjumper

2010-09-24 Thread jlvota
I don't know how much you want to spend or if you would want to get
something shipped, but I saw this on Chicago cl this morning:

http://chicago.craigslist.org/nch/bik/1970442015.html

The size isn't stated, but it looks like it may be around what you are
looking for and appears to be in really good shape.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet Fender clearance

2010-09-24 Thread Bruce
Mine is a 52 with 26" wheels. I run 37s in it (no 38s made for 26" afaik) and
there is a bit of room left. I don't know of a 34 or 35 in 26" to try the
fenders with, hence my comment about using them successfully with 32s.

That page has tons of information. There is not much info on the
smaller sizes though. Those used 26" wheels I believe and I don't see
any widths mentioned for anything other than the 700C.
