[RBW] Re: A Quickbeam-enabled Thanksgiving

2010-11-27 Thread William
I put in about 30 miles along Grizzly Peak and Skyline on a chilly
Thanksgiving morning. It was in the mid 30s, which is pretty cold for
me. I took a couple phone pictures of San Francisco across the way
but nothing worth posting to Flickr. I did another 20 out wildcat on
Friday which was not quite as cold. The Hilsen is quickly becoming my
best bike ever. I really really like it.

Today is significantly warmer but it's raining hard, so I think I'll
skip today.

Thanksgiving morning was just a short 10 or a bit more mile ride.
Fairly chilly with temps around 10 and a 10 to 20 mph wind.

Today was much better - 20 miles and almost balmy at low to mid 20's.
(I was actually overdressed.)  Met list member Dan A.  We've waived in
the past, but this is the first time we'd spoken.  That was a nice
 highlight of the day.

Neither ride on the Riv, but did have MUSA pants on today along with
the Sackville small on the bike.  Yesterday added the MUSA Rainpants
as added wind protection.  And have discovered I can wear two layers
under that (MUSA nylon pants and long johns).  More versatility.

   It's

   MapMyRide.
  http://www.mapmyride.com/route/us/hi/honolulu/589129080937035477
It took just over 2 hours to get there (earlier than I expected so
   there's a
little jog off the track to get some coffee and hang out). I attribute my
slowness to age, lethargy, and the fact that it is urban riding so there
   are
stop lights and such to deal with. I was pretty sure coming back would a
   be
a lot slower because 1) it was against a fairly strong wind and 2) I was
full, really full. Still it only took 20 minutes longer to get home and
   that
included a quick stop at a grocery store. Go figure.

We really should make the Quickbeam the official bicycle of

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-27 Thread Benedikt
I guess I just got done with my winter project. It involved building
2 wheels and rigging up lights. First time wheelbuilding. Used a
Schmidt generator hub, Velocity Chukker rims, DT double butted
spokes. Front Light Busch Müller Lumotec IQ CYO R T Plus (can that
name get any longer?) and a Busch Müller Seculite Plus for the
rear.

On Nov 11, 7:23 am, Ely Rodriguez elyk...@gmail.com wrote:
Our winter in SF consists of rain and shorter daylight, so to prepare
for winter means making sure the bikes have fenders and adequate

Only my Bridgestone RB-1 road bike has no fenders or permanent lights
 mounted.

I'm preparing a bike to leave in Boston, where we go go every winter
for a few weeks and about a month in the summer.
It's a Bruce Gordon BLT with S and S couplers, and  I brazed down tube
 shifters onto.
It's made up of extra parts laying around. It'll have two sets of
tires, 23's for long road rides and fat 35's for the snow and slush.
I've got some VO constructeur racks and fat steel fenders for it, but
I may not bring them this time, I'm not sure if it'll fit into the S
and S bag that I sewed for it, made up of cordura and heavyweight 24oz
cotton duck. 26x26x10. It actually turned out great!!!

My other winter project is rigging up a few of our bikes with lights.
My wifes RB-1 needs a rear gen.light for her shimano dynamo wheel and
 front light.
My Ti rando needs a rear gen.light for the Schmidt/B+M.
My fixed Bridgestone RB has a shimano B+M front and rear,
but I'd like to run the wiring inside the frame and under the fender
on the fixed. I'll get it done by December or so.
All of the above bikes have fenders.

The other thing I have going on is the 1902 Singer 29-2 sewing machine
that sews leather. I picked it up for free off of craigslist from a
retired shoe maker. I've made a bunch of bags and this thing goes
through the thickest leather like its butter. I'm still learning how
to use it. My stitches on this are all wonky. It's going to take a
long time and a lot of messed up rando bags to figure it out.

My last ongoing project is practicing brazing on my fixed. dyanamo
wire guides, fender and rack mounts, light tabs, all that stuff, just
 braze ons. no frame brazing.

now, but I'll be putting together a Campeur kit for it this winter
(drop bars, fenders, racks, bags).  So next time a week-plus touring
opportunity presents itself, the Bombadil will be the bike for it.

What do you do in the winter?  Overhaul your favorite bike?  Go
through the parts stash and clean house?  Start up a new bike

for a few weeks and about a month in the summer.
It's a Bruce Gordon BLT with S and S couplers, and  I brazed down tube

It's made up of extra parts laying around. It'll have two sets of
tires, 23's for long road rides and fat 35's for the snow and slush.
I've got some VO constructeur racks and fat steel fenders for it, but
I may not bring them this time, I'm not sure if it'll fit into the S
and S bag that I sewed for it, made up of cordura and heavyweight 24oz

Go

[RBW] Re: What's your winter project?

2010-11-27 Thread Steve
I will disassemble my 1965 Raleigh Superbe, strip down the frame and
fenders, powder coat it (I will try to match the olive green, if not
then black)
and then reassemble with new decals and clear coat. This bike is my
Boston commuter bike and I take great delight in keeping it in top
shape.

[RBW] Re: My Racing Riv Ram... finally complete

Absolutely no room for anything bigger than a 28 under that fender...
especially with the taillight wire running inside there. But this IS a
racing bike. Nice 28s should do the job.

This might mean that need a Bombadil :-)

[RBW] Re: Atlantis fender size

2010-11-27 Thread Ian Dickson
I got them from wiggle, but they don't have them in 700x50 right now.
Looks like SJS Cycles has them:

http://www.sjscycles.co.uk/schwalbe-marathon-dureme-hs410-folding-tyre-700c-%28622%29-prod22132/

For me, they're more suitable than Supremes or Big Apples. Much
better traction on loose stuff, wet mud, even snow. I would love it
if Rivendell stocked these.

Re: [RBW] Re: Atlantis fender size

2010-11-27 Thread Rene Sterental
It's the 28x2.0. That is equivalent to 700x50 and it shows in stock
when I checked. Fenders would be 700x60.

How would the Dureme compare to a Supreme?

[RBW] Ram and Jack Brown - no tire deflation needed

2010-11-27 Thread James Warren

the wonderful ride of the Rambouillet.

I'm on a trip through California right now with my Ram on the car rack, and it
requires repeated removal of the front wheel. This has been covered before, but
it's worth mentioning again since it's brief. With the following three things:

1) QR on brake lever (like Tektro)
2) QR on the brake caliper itself (I'm using Shimano Ultegra longreach)
3) Having the barrel adjuster normally all the way up so that upon wheel
removal, you can screw it down a lot...

...the Ram brakes open up to allow removal of a fully inflated JB, and it's a
very easy three-step process. I've done it 5 times since Wednesday!

If you like your Ram with JB's, I strongly recommend this process. It's way
worth the expense of getting the Tektro levers if you don't have them. Of
course, the more recent Big Mouth brakes from Rivendell would help a lot.

On a related note, my brother and I switched bikes during our road ride near
Stevens Creek Reservoir yesterday. His bike is a Colnago C50. He was very
impressed with my Ram with Jack Browns, I was very impressed with his C50.

He seemed a bit surprised about how nice the ride is with the Jack Browns.
