If you haven't come across it, I'd visit the SFRandonneurs.org site and
their discussion group as well.

If you've done centuries, you probably have a sense of your pace over the
100 miles, and how you felt afterward. I think it's a little easier to get
behind, calorically-speaking, on colder weather brevets. In addition to the
energy demands, you're body is burning calories to keep you warm as well.

There won't be the fully stocked rest stops found on most centuries, so
bringing a variety of snacks and food is a good idea. It's strange what
starts to taste really bad at about hour 6.

I really did a poor job at staying topped off last January -
http://ramblings.cyclofiend.com/?p=423

You'll definitely want lighting that allows you to navigate for the last
hour or so - you'll probably find that the first 30 minutes are also pretty
dark. (There are specific reflector/lighting requirements on brevets -
http://rusa.org ) A head lamp is really a good thing - repairs, navigation,
etc.

I don't think I'd ride a January brevet without fenders. But, then again,
the Quickbeam wore fenders all year this year. (And the SFR 200K course goes
through plenty of cattle ranches...)

To finish, I'll invoke the words of Kent Peterson, which has gotten me
through some reasonably low points,

"Keep pedaling. It will get better."

http://kentsbike.blogspot.com/

hope that helps - let us know how it goes!

[RBW] Any experience with the Stagecoach trail from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon?

2010-12-27 Thread jinxed
I know it's a bit early for cabin fever, but I am dreaming of riding
in the desert next summer.

A friend and I have kicked around several ideas for a 2-4 day trip but
have never gone past the talk. I want to change that summer of 2011.
The two routes we seem to gravitate towards are the Kokopelli and
Stagecoach trails. Personally I am leaning toward the latter.

I've read a few different and varying accounts of the terrain on the
70 mi Stagecoach trail from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. It seems
that doing it one way in 2 days would be comfortably achievable and
the more ambitious plan would be to go out and back in 2. We would be
camping, and self supported. Most preferably I would like to take 4
days to go out and back so we could enjoy the sights and camping as
much as the riding.

We have done part of the Kokopelli heading from Fruita CO to Moab UT
so it's a bit more familiar.

If anyone has done either trail, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Re: [RBW] Advice for brevet

2010-12-27 Thread Ken Mattina
What Steve said.

If you're going to be riding in country dark I would say it's almost
impossible to have too much lighting.

However if you can ride 124 miles in less than 8 hours I wouldn't worry
about lights.

Find someone that rides at your speed and stay with them.

I'm riding a brevet on January 1 also. The weather is predicted to be
nice. I would never ride a winter brevet without a fendered bike though.
The weather is pretty unpredictable here in Oregon.

Don't forget to eat and drink and bring extra clothes.

Don't forget to have fun.

Good luck,

Ken

I'd commuted at night for almost 30 years when I did my first brevet.
The big surprise was how very hard it was for me to read the computer
and the cue sheet after dark. I had a small blinkie mounted to my
handlebars pointed down at the handlebar bag, but it was so bright on
the cue sheet I was dazzled by the glare, and it didn't illuminate the
mileage readout on the computer at all (and I had trouble reading the
street signs as well) so navigating after dark was a big issue.

This year I tried to solve the problem with a helmet mounted
PrincetonTech EOS, but found that although it lit everything up just
fine when I was looking through my distance lenses, when I tipped my
head up enough to see through the bifocals the light shifted so both
computer and cue sheet were left in the dark. Good thing the guy I was
riding with had a GPS that announced all the turns!

I brought enough food this time for the entire ride, and that helped too
- saved me a lot of time and made it possible for me to stay with the
guy with the GPS.

Those extra 25 miles or so over a century may be a big deal, or they may
be nothing. Three or four years ago a century got extended by 10 miles
due to high water (couldn't take the ferry, had to go the long way
around) and those extra 10 miles were completely disheartening. Last
year, the extra 25 miles were nothing when riding, but on the drive home
I found I couldn't lift my leg high enough to move it over to the brake
pedal, so I had to brake left-footed. This year, it was nothing at all.

Speaking of the drive home, that may be the biggest factor for you.
There was a discussion about this not long ago on one of the lists I
belong to, and some of the experienced randonneurs said they made it a
point to take a nap before driving home. It's a bad business to fall
asleep behind the wheel!

[RBW] Advice for brevet

2010-12-27 Thread Anne Paulson
Hi all.

I signed up for my first brevet, a 200K along the Pacific on New
Year's Day. I know there are some randonneurs here-- any advice for a
newbie? I've done bike touring and centuries before, but never a
randonee. Given the time of year, I'm expecting quite a bit of time
riding in the dark. As of now, the weather is supposed to be fair, so
I'm planning on taking the non-fendered Roadeo instead of the fendered
Atlantis.

Re: [RBW] Christmas Day Ride in Northern CA

2010-12-27 Thread Robert F. Harrison
Actually the mechanical failure turned out to be a mini-blessing. I did have
to get the spoke replaced but that meant I gave my bike a good cleaning
while I was getting the wheel cleaned up. In addition I put on a new rear
tire as the old one was nearing the end of its life. I couldn't quite see
what was under the rubber but after 13 months of riding and a few thousand
miles it seemed like a good time.

It also got me down to my LBS and I got a few things I'd been putting off;
new riding gloves, new foam hand grips for the beater (the old ones were
getting pretty sticky and leaving black goo on things...yep, it's a beater),
and something else that escapes me at the moment. :-)

Also my beater bike is fun to ride in the rain and it looks like there's
more of it coming:

Re: [RBW] Thank You for Marin County Advice - Erik, Mike, Jim, Phil

2010-12-27 Thread erik jensen
you are certainly welcome!

staying off the trails is a good bet--it'll take a while to dry out after
this much consistent rain.

i'll be back in town this thursday, and will have to go to work (already
took the holiday vacation), so i won't be able to join you. if you need any
bits or tools to solve any issues, i'm in oakland and can help you out with
that though.

don't miss the bovine bakery in pt reyes station, and there's a nice
fireroad near there that is 3 miles or so out to arch rock--it's very easy
(even in the rain, i'd imagine), and there's a bike rack where it closes to
bikers. that's a nice spot to hit when the weather is bad, since it's easy
enough--bad weather is magic for having trails to yourself, too, even here!
28s'd be ok, as it's well maintained by the national park service.

anyway, here's a link to that hike described by a hiker;
http://www.bahiker.com/northbayhikes/prbv.html

and photos from my blog;
here and then
here

enjoy the riding! it's a wonderful time to be out, i find these misty rainy
days to be so calming on the bike.

East"...
When the winds die down a bit, I'll hop on my 29er mountain bike,
slightly deflate the knobbies, and go have some FUN! The Bomba has
Big Apple tires... might be a bit TOO much fun (i.e. wipeouts)... it
will have to sit this one out...

Peace,
BB

Yes it is! I am not sure which city Cherry Creek Reservoir officially
falls into, but I access it through Aurora on the north side.

[RBW] Re: Boxing day ride.

2010-12-27 Thread jinxed
I have always been sartorially rebellious.

I would switch to the knobbies if we ever get any weather. This
"winter" has been nuts...usually we have snow by Halloween. Denver had
a record breaking 70 degree day just a couple weeks ago. It's super
nice for the recreation, but the fire danger is going to be horrendous
come summer if we dont see some measurable precipitation soon.

[RBW] Re: Rivendell-ish books

2010-12-27 Thread MKahrl

I would also second Patrick's recommendation of Patrick O'Brian's
Aubrey/Maturin series of books. I read a lot of good books but these
are the best. Do not read the night before an important meeting
because you can easily stay up all night reading one. They are
exciting, immersive, you will develop friendships with the characters,
and they are laugh out loud funny. Start with the first book, Master
and Commander, where the two main characters meet.

Pretty sure I can make it.

P.S. Glad you didn't suggest a midnight ride . . .
