[RBW] Re: Grease and Beeswax

2011-05-04 Thread Benedikt
Don't put any grease on the spindles. The cranks slide onto them
dry. At least this is what my LBS told me. The bolt which holds
them on should be greased though.

I'm one for Phil Wood grease or it's equivalent and Locktite Blue
Designed for the locking and sealing of threaded fasteners which
require normal disassembly with standard hand tools such as those
fender to rack bolts. It's super annoying to have a fender start
rattling 1/2 way to work and be required to remove the wheel just to
tighten the bolt.

screw in (am I missing any?). What I am less clear about is when one
should apply beeswax to screws. I've watched all the Riv youtube
videos and have seen beeswax applied at various points (to the screws
that hold on downtube shifters, for instance), but I haven't found a
comprehensive list. Is there any rhyme or reason to when one should be
applying the stuff? Does it go on everything? Rear derailer? Brake
 bolts? Fender stays?

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

All of which leads me to believe that, as long as you torque the bolts

The AHH was advertised as 135 when I considered buying one. I was
surprised that GP moved away from the more versatile 132.5 of the
Rambouillet, which was put to sleep when the AHH was released.
Perhaps he thought the 135 fit the bikes image better. I didn't have
any other bikes that took 135 and didn't want a non- compatible wheel
set to deal with, along with the brakes, that was a deal breaker for
me.

I would recommend to the OP having the stays reset to 132.5 and using
either set of wheels at will.

[RBW] Marathon tires - Dureme vs. Supreme

2011-05-04 Thread EricP
Totally non-scientific and just my own opinion. A few weeks ago
purchased a pair of Marathon Duremes in 700x40 for a non-Riv bike.
For comparison, have had a set of Supreme 700x40 on my Sam Hillborne
for most of the past year.

So having just a few hundred miles on the Dureme how do they feel and
compare? Without taking into consideration the entirely different
bikes, they ride like a dream. Feel like they are quicker to
accelerate and seem to roll with less effort. Also seem more
comfortable on bumps and potholes than the Supremes, even pumped up to
close to the same pressure.

As to size, also pretty close to the Supremes. Supremes are more
truly round. (Can you open your heart to the sound of the 5 string
banjo - it's round) While the Dureme has a slight shoulder where the
tread ends on the sidewall.

Bear in mind the Duremes are about 80 grams heavier than the
Supremes. As well has as having an actual tread. My working theory -
the Duremes feel nicer because of the tread. Road vibration, feedback
and maybe the hum of the tires makes me think they are faster. A
purely mental issue. That said, I like the Duremes enough that the
Hillborne will eventually get a pair. Maybe not this year, but when
the present tires wear out.

[RBW] Re: Lighter Wheel Set Question

2011-05-04 Thread Bill M.
I used a pair of 130 mm Shimano 105 hubs in a 135 spaced frame by
adding 2 mm of spacers to each side of the axle. No re-dishing was
needed, it worked fine. There's a bit less axle in the dropout but
that makes no difference, as Sheldon pointed out the wheel is held by
the locknut and skewer faces. It's also easily reversible.

I wouldn't bother respacing the frame. My Riv Road was spaced 128 (to
accept 126 or 130 hubs), and I think it's kind of a pain.

If you go with V-brakes make sure you:

1. get the right brake levers to match them
2. the cable splitting thing gets harder with v-brakes b/c there is no
simple way of unhooking them w/o readjusting them.

Also worth looking at some of the other tektro/cane creek cantis - the

Certainly.  I've done a couple of 200K brevets with a B.17 saddle and

not exactly a really long ride -- not, for example, like a 1200K.

[RBW] Hillborne for the hills?

2011-05-04 Thread TSW
Hi all,
I've searched all over forum archives and can't seem to find much
discussion on this question: how does the Sam climb?

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a 52 (ideally I'd ride a 54,
and 56 is just a tad too big), my 26 yr old Trek 560 ready to retire,
and I'm used to a more aggressive geometry for climbing the hills
around here. I'll need to to test ride a Sam again, as Riv HQ isn't
too handy to a steep hill. I took out a Surly LHT (52/26 in) recently
up a fairly steep hill and found it sluggish.

But in the meantime, I wonder what're folks' thoughts on how the Sam
does on hills.

TIA,

OTOH, it carved fast downhills very, very well.

You ought to be very clear about what you mean by wandering. To most
people, that word implies behavior similar to a car with bad ball joints
and tie rod ends: steering is disconnected from the steering wheel, and
the wheels go where they want to regardless of what you do with the

what you call wandering is in fact wheel flop steering oversensitivity

When I recently built up my Bleriot (135mm) I used Velo Orange wheels

down with the skewers. I was able to do this with no problem at all.
It shifts fine, so I don't think the chainline is out of whack. Of

[RBW] Re: Hillborne for the hills?

2011-05-04 Thread MichaelH
Well Tia, Ernest Hemingway once said, Never trust an adjective. Or
as Paul Simon put it, One man's ceiling is another man's floor. So
one riders sluggish is another riders roadrunner. I find my
Rambouillet very zippy and very much like my '88 Marinoni, which
carries World Championship stripes. That said, someone with 10% body
fat and used to a 16 lb CF frame would probably find them both
sluggish.

The LHT was never intended to be zippy on hills; it's designed to be
stable and comfortable, with or without a load. It is a low cost, tig
welded version of the Atlantis. I suspect you will find the SH more
zippy than the LHT, but if you are used to a full fledged, unloaded
road bike, like a Rambouillet, then you should be prepared for some
trade off for the added stability and load carrying capacity.

My favorite commuter / touring bike is my Ebisu All Purpose which has
geometry and steel similar to the SH. With 35 mm tires it is not too
zippy going up hill, but on the other hand it will climb straight up a
10% grade between parked cars and passing traffic without raising my
BP two points. Probably if I put lighter, narrower wheels tires on,
it would be more zippy and less stable. I am blessed, so when I want
that zip I can go full out and jump on my beloved Ram.

Bottom line, no one bike can be best at everything but as GP says, the
modern ultra zippy bike has become a one trick pony. Decide what's
really important and what isn't. In the end, happiness is wanting
what you have not having what you want, because the ego likes wanting
more than it likes having and that truly is the endless uphill
struggle.

[RBW] Re: Riv Rally East and The Weather...

2011-05-04 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Rally Update for Wednesday:

I contacted Wellsboro PA local Bill Yacovissi, (who as you know
created the PineCreekBikeRides web site), asking him for an update on
the dirt road conditions, and to assess the Stony Fork stream
crossing, which is featured on the Wellsboro Loop (Saturday's ride).
He indicated the roads are in good shape (not muddy), but maybe a few
rough spots in places. The stream crossing at Stony Fork Rd is not
so deep as it is wide (and cold), according to Bill. In fact, he
suggested we consider an alternate variation of this route (he and I
are discussing options). This may potentially extend the length of
Saturday's ride, but we will first poll the group to make sure ALL are
comfortable with the route that we select.

Bill would also like to join us on Saturday's ride, but said he's
concerned he may feel out of place; first of all, not riding a Riv,
and then something about his age, being 64 years old... I assured him
he needn't be the slightest bit concerned; first, given that he rides
these roads (some with 1000 foot climbs) on a Trek 700 at age 64, I
assured him he'd have zero problem keeping up, and that he would be
MOST WELCOME among this group... Besides, I'm guessing Bill won't be
the eldest amongst this group, correct?

I'm grateful to have Bill joining us for Saturday's ride, and I'm sure
with his guidance we'll find a nice route to compensate for the Stony
Fork detour.

Peace,
BB

According to my math, that translates to a 70% chance of NO RAIN... So
as of this moment Riv Rally East is ON

Please confirm if you will be joining us; otherwise please don't
  forget to cancel your reservation.

  The schedule:

I will arrive Friday evening (exact time TBD; aiming for around dinner
time).  I am staying at the Sherwood Motel.
  My cell is (908) 303-6887

SAT AM - Assemble at Wellsboro Village Green at 8 AM.  We will depart
shortly thereafter.  Our Saturday route will feature the 44 mile
Wellsboro Route, which takes us down through the Pine Creek Gorge.
  (see
  link:http://pinecreekbikerides.com/Bike%20Rides/Wellsboro%20Loop/Wellsboro...).

Sunday - Riders' choice:  There are several great rides in the area
(see web site -http://pinecreekbikerides.com), I thought we'd allow
group consensus to determine the route; otherwise I might recommend
one of the Colton Point loops (since these provide options for those
who need to leave earlier on Sunday to travel home).  Personally I
plan to depart for home in the early afternoon, so I hope to get in a
4-5 hour ride in the morning.

I plan to bring light rain gear, but rain or shine, I am REALLY
looking forward to this weekend; I hope you are too.  I am trying to
contact local rider Bill Yacovissi, who hopefully can give us an idea
  of the dirt road conditions.

For those planning to arrive on Friday, if you would like to meet on
Friday evening, give a call or send a text once you arrive... I will
try to stick to my self-imposed curfew of 11 PM.

Hope to see you at the Rally!!!

The status of the rally is getting very close to a critical, have to

[RBW] bars for a simpleone?

2011-05-04 Thread andrew hill
just put a deposit on a SimpleOne.. trying to decide on the bars.

i've never really been a fan of drop bars, e.g. growing up as a kid in the
70s.. and the couple of times i've tried them over the intervening decades
haven't really changed my mind - the front ends have felt pretty squirrely (but
these were mostly skinny tires, too).

i've got a canti-Rom with mustache bars and a Hillborne with bullmoose bars -
love them both, although the front-end of the Hillborne is a bit floppy when
unloaded.

i figured that my lack of enthusiasm for drops was d/t build (very long torso,
short legs - 5'11 w 84 pbh). that being said, i'm wondering if there is
something i'm missing in not getting used to drops.

so i guess.. is there anything about a quickbeam/simplone that should influence
my anti/pro stance on drops?

anyone like other bars on their QBs, etc?
also wondering about albatross - anyone have pics of those on a QB?

thank,
andrew

style of riding, it really doesn't become an issue. Spent Sunday
climbing quite a few hills and at no time did the bike wander to the
point where I felt unsafe, even on roads with traffic and minimal
shoulders for riding.

And compared to the LHT the Rivendell is a more spirited climber.
Also happen to own a 26 inch wheel LHT and while stable and
predictible, it will definitely not win any hill climbing contests.
Unless of course, your opponent is on a Bakfiets.

 Hi all,
I've searched all over forum archives and can't seem to find much
discussion on this question: how does the Sam climb?

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a 52 (ideally I'd ride a 54,
and 56 is just a tad too big), my 26 yr old Trek 560 ready to retire,
and I'm used to a more aggressive geometry for climbing the hills
around here.  I'll need to to test ride a Sam again, as Riv HQ isn't
too handy to a steep hill.  I took out a Surly LHT (52/26 in) recently
up a fairly steep hill and found it sluggish.

But in the meantime, I wonder what're folks' thoughts on how the Sam
 does on hills.

CutePDF is a little odd but works well.

[RBW] Re: bars for a simpleone?

2011-05-04 Thread Rob H.
i'm already planning what the first and second iteration will be:
jitensha flat handlebars during its early years as primarily a
commuter, then either noodle or moustache for longer rides...

just put a deposit on a SimpleOne.. trying to decide on the bars.

i've never really been a fan of drop bars, e.g. growing up as a kid in the
70s.. and the couple of times i've tried them over the intervening decades
haven't really changed my mind - the front ends have felt pretty squirrely
(but these were mostly skinny tires, too).

i've got a canti-Rom with mustache bars and a Hillborne with bullmoose bars -
love them both, although the front-end of the Hillborne is a bit floppy when
 unloaded.

i figured that my lack of enthusiasm for drops was d/t build (very long
torso, short legs - 5'11 w 84 pbh).  that being said, i'm wondering if there
is something i'm missing in not getting used to drops.

so i guess.. is there anything about a quickbeam/simplone that should
influence my anti/pro stance on drops?

anyone like other bars on their QBs, etc?
also wondering about albatross - anyone have pics of those on a QB?

 thank,
 andrew

I wonder if digital/audio versions are done at Amazon, the publisher,
 or the author's prerogative?

Typically, that is the domain of the publisher. Any publisher should be
doing all they can to maintain control over the specific property, which
they are handing for the author.

It's clearly an area in flux - the means of publishing are really changing
these days - but, the rights to printed copies, electronic copies, audiobook
verions, etc should all be spelled out in the contract with the author.

If the author and/or their agent may elect to withhold other rights, such as
film or foreign language editions, to be negotiated separately.

- Jim boy, that's getting pretty off-topic...
