This reminds me, I've gotten a couple comments about the nice Schwinn I'm riding. They of course did a double, or tripple take when trying to read A. Homer Hilsen on the side, trying to see what it really was. I just grinned and thanked them. I would not have minded pointing out it was a Rivendell, but there's not a single decently sized logo for them to see more than a foot away. It's kind of like, reverse psychology branding. [RBW] Re: 26 vs 29...thought I knew which side I was on.
I have ridden mountain bikes from inception, circa 1983. I rode my road bike off road in the late '70's before the MTB came to be on the national level but there just weren't the 700c tires available to do more technical terrain. So I switched and rode MTB's almost exclusively. Rigid bikes with 26" 1.8" knobbies (45mm) were great for all terrain. I raced off and on for 10 years. Hard tails, full suspension, I rode at least 10 different 26" mountain bikes. So when 29er's came on the scene, I tried a Haro Mary hardtail and I was quickly converted, The speed you can carry on the downhills, the increased security in the corners. In fact I no longer wanted or needed rear suspension. Now I'm back to those fab "80's with 45mm knobbies except now I'm on 700c tires and having a blast. ~mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. The lesson to be learned here in addition to the kindness of strangers (Grant and the re-seller) is to not to rush to judgement...I'd argue that while this may work out in the end for the original owner and the re-seller, the guy who took the bike in payment is losing out on the deal since I doubt he was able to cover his costs for the work he's done. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Visit and ride at RBW
Northgate Rd averages 6.9 percent with a peak, riding up to the 1,000- ft mark, of 12+ percent. A 2000 fit climb in 6.5 miles. Summit Rd. from the junction Ranger Station to the top, is a 7.5 percent average, and a 1470-ft or so climb in 4.5 miles, with a short 10 percent section around Blue Oak campground, and then the dastardly 19 percent last tenth-of-a-mile or so. According to the book I wrote in 1982, at least. The roads haven't changed a bit, though. G On Aug 3, 10:08 pm, Joe Bunik wrote: > 3000' mark on Diablo via North Gate Rd. [RBW] Re: Fishy Betty
Grant, you're kindness is unconditional, and THAT alone is inspiring. Still there are a few unsettling questions in my mind about this story... The seller's asking price ($2000) vs selling price ($600)...don't know what conversation took place with the re-buyer, but that's a pretty big spread. The other thing I'm not entirely convinced of is that this woman (unfortunate as her situation seemed) was necessarily a victim. After all, SHE willingly gave up her Betty (which among this forum could be construed as the ultimate act of betrayal). Was she acting irresponsibly for accepting services (in the first place) without having the means to pay for it? Did she not care enough about her Betty to fight for it, or at least resort to other drastic measures before ultimately having to sacrifice poor Betty? At the risk of winning the award for "insensitive-bastard-of-the-day", I still maintain this was ultimately HER choice; and as far as I'm concerned her Betty apparently wasn't stolen from her. So is she really the victim here, and is she really worthy of having her Betty "gifted" back to her? I may be insensitive, but I'm no fool...I'd hate to see Mr Rebuyer (whose autograph I want) to become the unintended victim here... I just wonder whether there's more to this story...that's all... [RBW] Re: Phil "Rivy" freewheel wheelset opinions?
I am going to have to buy a few as I don't have any on hand, but the freewheel gear ranges that Shimano makes seem like they would work fine for the riding I do. It isn't too terribly hilly where I live so using an 11 tooth or a 34 really isn't necessary. The freewheels seem cheap enough that I could stockpile a half dozen or so for the future. I really kind of want a hubset that doesn't require repacking in the future. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Riv Branding
I really enjoy the fact that Rivs aren't splashed with the brand name all over the bike too. I'm thinking of my Trek here, that thing says "TREK" in about 8 different areas on the bike. Kind of ridiculous. I didn't know about Rivendells until a friend of mine showed up to a ride using a Hilsen. I kept trying to find out what bike brand it was because it was so pretty, but I never heard of A. Homer Hilsen as a bike brand. This of course started a conversation about Rivs and many nights going to the Rivendell website, now I have a Sam Hillborne and plan on getting a Roadeo in the near future. I think it is one of the ways that Riv stands out, makes the bikes look more classy and less gaudy. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] FS: Riv Romulus Canti
As I understand it there were less than 50 of these made with the canti style brakes making it a very desirable bike. Geometry is basically the same as the Ramboo. But for a lot less money since it doesn’t have the fancy painted lugs and was built up as a complete bicycle directly from RIV. This bike has a pea sized small dent in the top tube. When I took it to the bike shop they said no big deal. It is about 5 inches behind the lug on the riders left side. Very small but it is there. It does not photograph well, so I won’t even try. Mine is pretty much stock except for the dirt drop stem mudflaps elk skin chainstay protector and Fenders. The bike measures 57 C to C or 59 center to top of seat tube as riv would measure. Seat- None Stem- Nitto Dirt drop Bar- Nitto Noodle Headset- Shimano Ultegra Brake levers- New shimano aero also has interuptor brake handles. Brakes- shimano wide profile cantis with new Kool Stop Salmon Pads Shifters- Dura ace 9sp bar ends Derailleurs- Shimano 105 Crankset- Sugino XD triple Wheels- Triple box Sun CR18s laced to Deore. Rear wheel was re-spoked this year. This bike is in excellent condition with what in my opinion was the most beautiful paint color in the Riv lineup! Does not include saddle pedals lights or bag! I need $1500 for it plus shipping. Using the proceeds to help defray the costs of my new to me Atlantis. I'll post some pix tonight. Please contact me off the boards if interested. [RBW] Re: Riv Branding
In a technical sense using "Rivendell" on customs seems perfectly appropriate to me. For the production bikes, there's a name given to the production model that helps the customers categorize the bikes according to characteristics that distinguish one from another. There are fundamental ways that a Hillborne is distinct from the Hunqapillar that are consistent and functional and aesthetic. So that name is useful is identifying the nature of the bike. For the custom bikes, the only thing they are asserted to have in common is that they were designed by (or at least in conjunction with) RBW. Perhaps lots of them share certain characteristics that might group them into families. But I imagine if that's true that it's heavily an "effect" of the customization process (i.e. similarities of the customers desires per se) and not so heavily the cause of any given bike's nature. With the variation that probably exists among of the custom frames they've produced, "Rivendell" may be the most specific "brand" that's reasonable. [RBW] Re: Phil "Rivy" freewheel wheelset opinions?
I too have a recent "rivy" Phil Wood FW hub on my hillborne. I bought it last year, as long as your comfortable that you'll be able to source reasonable freewheels for the next few years then go for it. More practical people would tell you to get a Deore or LX freehub built for the same price because in practical terms that would meet your functional needs perfectly fine and you have security with the cassettes. But since you're asking about a Phil Wood hub, i think there is something more emotional going on (at least there was for me), so go for it. Other then the potential limitations of a freewheel there aren't any downsides to the PW hubs. p.s. i also have a freewheel PW rear hub from the early 80's, it's still spins nice and smooth -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Riv Branding
When i got my Hillborne, i too thought it strange that it wasn't labeled a Rivendell, but i also understood the history of them keeping the customs as Rivendell branded and the off-the-shelf frames as Rivendell inspired. In the end, what does having a Rivendell branded bike really get the buyer? Most people on the street won't know the difference between a Rivendell and a Hillborne or Bombadil anyway. And the folks who might know, get "it" already, a personal example of this, all the folks that have approached me about my Hillborne, they always ask if it's a Rivendell, like they already know. Part of that maybe the overall aesthetic of the frame, part of it i'm sure is that people who buy these frames tend to build them up with a certain aesthetic (i.e. propensity for racks, bike bags, high stems, fat tires) over the norm (i.e. carbon forks, skinny tires, tight frames). For me i think labeling it Rivendell would be an ego thing for the buyer, sure Rivendell the company loses out because less casual people can make the connection to the brand. But at the same time i wouldn't want it to become some crazy, out of reach boutique brand like Vanilla... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Fishy Betty
Hi Joe. I understand your sentiment as my first response was something similar. But then I remembered that I have quite a few friends in the trades. I'm sure they would much rather be payed for the craftsmanship they provided, rather than having to take something in barter and spending their own work or home time selling it. Like most of us, they have mouths to feed, homes to pay for, and in their case, a business to run. It would be similar to me buying a custom from Riv and then asking them to take my espresso machine as part of the payment (if I had an espresso machine). That may not be the situation for this fella, but whatever the truth of the matter, I think it displays a certain great character of Rivendell to wring a happy ending out of a tough situation, at its own expense. I like not having Rivendell on my Ram or Bleriot. I like that the graphics all go together without the need to put the company's name in big letters. [RBW] Re: Riv Branding
I don't see how "reserving" the Rivendell logotype for customs makes any sense at all. It's the company name, not the model. Schwinn didn't reserve "Schwinn" for only high-end bikes, nor does Serotta refrain from putting "Serotta" on production frames, etc etc. Further, the only people you're "reserving" Rivendell from are people who already know what it is. I'd have to know a lot about Rivs to know a bike that only says "Rivendell" is supposedly more special and exclusive than a bike that doesn't. If anything, I'd be inclined to think the opposite as a casual observer. Maybe that's the point? It's the "radical humility" ethos taken to the extreme? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Riv Branding
A story I've neglected to tell here... A month ago, the kids and I were riding the Greenbelt (our in-town bike/walking trail). I usually take notice of other bikes along the way, hoping to catch the fella that had a green Quickbeam (only other Riv I've seen on the Greenbelt, aside from my Rambouillet). A couple of miles along, there was an elderly gentleman sitting on one of the benches with his bicycle parked beside him (a Schwinn, if I remember); I remembered him because he had a brown sprung saddle and a handlebar bag, which you never see (75% of the bikes on this trail are NEXT BSO's from WalMart). We usually say 'Hi' to whoever we pass, but continue to roll along at a good clip. We rode out to one of our usual turn-around points, and was about halfway back when we encountered the gentleman again. I spotted him far enough ahead to notice that he had seen us and was stopping, so I slowed up a bit as we approached, when he hailed me "Can we talk for a minute? It's not often you get to see one of Grant Petersen's designs out on this trail..." So he and I ended up chatting for about 20 minutes. Nice fella, Mr. Brooks, said he used to run a bike shop, had retired almost 20 years earlier. Said he loved Grant's bikes from back then, and was excited that he'd just gotten a Bridgestone on ebay (I can't remember if it was an MB or an XO). As we rode away, my 9-yr-old daughter said "I know, your bike's famous..." Well, at least in our house, it is... Thing is, I love the name Rivendell. I knew about Rivendell as a bike company, but I had no idea what the heck a Rambouillet was. I bought the bike because it was an awesome bike, regardless of the name. Yeah, I think I kinda wished it said Rivendell instead of Rambouillet; but, at the same time, I can see how reserving that label for customs might not be a bad thing, either.(If it wasn't for money, I'd 'almost' order a custom Rivendell that was a copy of my Rambouillet, to have 'Rivendell' on it.) But by the same token if I lock my bike up outside a restaurant, and it says 'Rambouillet' on it, and no one knows what it is other than 'an old steel bike', then maybe it'll get left alone, whereas perhaps the name 'Rivendell' just might have a bit better chance of being known as an expensive bike, maybe being a bit more of a target then? But, even called a Rambouillet, I had a stranger stop me on the trail to look at my Rivendell... so, maybe, it doesn't really matter... those in the know will know, and those that don't, don't care... [RBW] Re: Phil "Rivy" freewheel wheelset opinions?
I have a set of older Phil Touring hubs without the field serviceable axle. I bought a few freewheels from Riv. I would absolutely by a brand new set today so long as I were comfortable with a 7 or 8speed setup. Why? Simply because there are barely any quality cassette hubs with cartridge bearings in the price range. You have to spend a lot more to get that in a cassette hub. The new Velo Orange touring hubs are worth considering. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Phil "Rivy" freewheel wheelset opinions?
I use Phil FW hubs, and had a second pair built last year. No issues with them , other than check the end caps every once in while to make sure they are sung. I've used but never owned cassette wheels. I may some day but I've got a large stock of FW's to last likely for my life ... so I'm in no hurry. I'll only buy cartridge bearing hubs, and have used them since the early 80's. I'd never used Shimano hubs for that reason alone. I can't believe it's 2011 and they're pumping those cups/cones out. Cartdridge bearings are so much easier to live with. If you want to use FW's today ... just make sure you have FW's in combo's you can live with... then buy lots of spares. Do you many spare FW's Ryan, or are you looking to get some new ones? -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: Riding in Birkenstocks
Yes the tans tines are great !! I'm really loving riding in them so much so I started using a mid foot foot over pedal position. Wow what a difference for me in efficiency and feel of the bike. I had heard of a mid foot position ala Lon Haldeman and others ... but I never really tried it before until now. The Birks are perfect for this because of my high arch feet and their bountiful arch support along with a mid foot stiffness not found in sneakers. I wear a 47 Birk, 15 street shoe. Unbelievably even on the Bombadil I can sometimes rub my front fender with my Birks once in a great while with a mid foot position . but the beauty of no clips/straps is I can just move my feet back a little bit as needed temporarily. I don't think I'll have this problem on the Hunqapillar though as the front-center length is even longer. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] Re: 26 vs 29...thought I knew which side I was on.
When I had a larger wheel mountain bike, I liked the feeling. However, hand issues are going to prevent me from ever being a mountain biker again. Unless I go to suspension. Although maybe a fat bike of some sort would work. 3.7 or 4.5 inch wide tires might give enough cushion. 650B did not work for me in the least although I wanted it to. Am now having to survive on riding bikes with merely 40s on my 700C bikes and 50s on my 26 inch wheel touring bike. As an aside - the riders this past weekend included a gent on a Salsa Mukluk. He was able to easily keep pace with the fastest riders. Last I saw of him he was following a tandem doing over 20 mph. Eric Platt (who is realizing it's not wheel size but the motor that's the issue.) Uh, that's "sheer redundancy". Sorry. And there's at least one "ad" that should be "as".
