And how could you NOT say Hunqapillar every chance you got?

[RBW] Re: Help - can't ride for the lack of a bolt

2011-08-07 Thread Philip Williamson
It takes a little while to dial in the angle of drop bars, and set the
hoods to the perfect height. They affect each other, but riding around
with untaped bars and a tool usually works. Cable routing can affect
your grip, especially with cotton tape. I just retaped some bars,
replacing cork tape with cotton, and find that I really want to move
the cable, because the nice 'shelf' has become a sharp edge under the
new tape.

I suggested standover as the easiest b/c the only two atlanti with

After that the 58 and 61 look different b/c of the head tube size and
the 64 is obviously the biggest.

Unless this is a fairly old one in 66 or 68 but even then the
 standover will be obvious.

Also standover height is easiest and least-finicky to measure.

Re: [RBW] How Much Difference Would Different Wheels/Tires Make

2011-08-07 Thread Michael Hechmer
Wheel weight, or more specifically rim/tire weight matters more than other
parts because in addition to moving forward or up a hill, the weight also
must move upward as the rim rolls. A hundred grams, 4 oz off each tire, and
another 4 off each rim and you have a total difference of one 1 lb of
rolling weight. Most riders will find the difference quite noticable.

I ride 38 Avocet Cross tires with Mavic G4 rims on my Ebisu All purpose; 32
mm Pasella folding tires with Arraya rims on my Trek 620, currently 23 mm
Continentals with open pro rims on my Rambouillet; and Specialized tubulars
on my classic Marinoni. The Ebisu weighs about 5 lbs more than the
Rambouillet and the Marinoni, which when added to my 190 lb body doesn't
make much difference. At cruising speed all of these tires feel fine; but
when it comes to climbing hills or sprinting for a traffic light, each one
performs noticeably different. When I'm riding on dirt I will almost always
choose the Avocet and never choose the continentals. But if I have long
climbs ahead give me open pro rims and a light weight tire. Ditto for
sprinting to a traffic light.

A recent poster, here, reviewed a Schwabe tire that is 2.35 inches and liked
the cushiness but sounded surprised that the tires felt sluggish. I looked
at the Schwabe web site a saw that those tires weigh 890 grams each. Of
course they are sluggish.

peace,
michael

[RBW] Assembly

2011-08-07 Thread Noel M.
Hi eveyone, this is my first post.

I don't own a Rivendell just yet; I'm still in the process of
(patiently) saving up for an AHH or a Sam. I'm constantly on their
website to explore and learn. I'm not too keen on the various
components so I'll take whatever the folks at Rivendell suggests..when
the time comes to order. Currently, I ride a Trek 7100 (hybrid) which
I bought about a year ago...I love to ride!

For those who have done it, how easy/complicated was it to assemble
your Riv yourself?

I'm somewhat mechanically inclined and armed with just basic tools.
The only other bikes I've assembled was my daughters' bikes and my
wife's Schwinn bike ordered from LLBean. I've also watched Riv's
Youtube video (several times) of one of their bikes being assembled.
They make it look easy..but then again, the guy's a pro!

Would assembling an AHH/Sam be any more complicated than assembling,
say, my wife's Schwinn bike?

Also, will the folks from Riv instruct me as to the proper height of
the saddle and stem?

I'll would be greatful for any insight and information on this
subject.

thanks all!

I use a 7cm stem on my Hillborne and a dirt drop on my Jamis Aurora, which

[RBW] !st Rivendell - Thank You Forrest and Bikeman

2011-08-07 Thread Jay
Today I finally got to ride the frameset I bought from Forrest about a
month ago. It was built up for my by Bikeman in Bath Maine and as far
as I can tell they did a great job. They were very patient with me
during the process of specing, changing and respecing everything, and
their prices were more than fair. Absolutely no hassles dealing with
Forrest either. The frameset was delivered exatly when and how he said
it would be, and the few scratches he pointed out before the sale
turned out to be even smaller than I expected. I'll save the extra
nail polish for future beusage.

Only got a short ride in this morning after a little frustration with
the assembly. Mostly due to stupidity brought on by lack of sleep. 1st
time on a road bike so a bit awkward. Hopefully I'll be able to adjust
before tackling the Green Mountain loop solo the week after next.

44 years old and I still don;t have the sense to come in out of the
rain (figuratively this week with the nice weather, but literally
too). Hope I never do.

Thanks to everyone here for all your help, and for any tips,
suggestions and words of encouragement you may chose to offer.

Re: [RBW] What's the shortest stem that you would use?

2011-08-07 Thread Solomander
So I raised the bars a bit. It definitely helped to make me feel less
stretched out. I also noticed that my center of gravity was shifted back on
the bike and that I had less weight on the bars and more on the seat.
Didn't make a noticeable difference in speed- I'm still a slug. I'm going
to live with the bike for a few weeks before doing anything else.

I am also thinking about rechecking my fore-aft saddle position. I have a
road bike that I feel very comfortable on. The distance from the nose of
the saddle to the center of the bars is the same on my Litespeed and my AHH.
The Litespeed has a straight seatpost and the AHH has a set back seatpost.
This makes me wonder if I am in the right place over the pedals. Lots of
variables!

I am also thinking about rechecking my fore-aft saddle position.  I have a

The Litespeed has a straight seatpost and the AHH has a set back seatpost.

[RBW] Re: Assembly

2011-08-07 Thread Zack
Hey Noel -

Couple of thoughts:

Rivendell has a Build Fee of $210 if you get the bike sent to you the way
that you see in the YouTube video. This, to me, was worth it, as I knew
that they were going to have everything set up perfectly. The assembly that
you have see in the video will be well within your skill set, it's easy
peezy.

If you decide to just get all the parts through them, the build will take
longer/more experience. Not to say you couldn't do it, but it would
probably take you some time as you were doing it the first time yourself.
For people that are experienced mechanics the build fee wouldn't make
sense.

I knew it would take me a day or two to build it myself, and it's worth $210
to me to have it done perfectly and save me that time.

I am sure they can give you tips on saddle and stem height.

The experience of talking through options with them couldn't be better, in
my experience. They are always really helpful and committed to getting you
on a bike that you will love and that will fit you.

No; if anything easier unless your wife's Schwinn was a single speed
model. And good bikes are a lot easier to work on than cheap bikes.

Also, will the folks from Riv instruct me as to the proper height of
 the saddle and stem?

Sure; ask them. Be sure to get saddle in right place (up/down,
fore/aft) before adjusting stem and bar.

I'll would be greatful for any insight and information on this

There is always, or usually, a period of adjustment with a new bike;
even after 40+ years of assembling my own bicycles I don't get
everything exactly right the first time -- tho' as you gain more

Good luck, and post photos.

Putting a bike together is immensely enjoyable. You should take on the
challenge! Bottom bracket and headset are the only things you might want to
ask them to install as they take specialized tools. Everything else on the
bike is mostly done w/ a 5 or 6mm hex wrench! Adjusting the derailers and
cable tension will probably be your only tough spot and I'm sure you'll get
plenty of advice from us if you can't get past that stage! :-)

Noel, IF you are mechanically-inclined and would like to get to know your
bike and come away with an extra sense of accomplishment, I would second
Dustin's recommendation to assemble the whole thing yourself. I've picked
up these skills and tools over the years of riding and being interested in
bikes in general, even to the extent of having my own bike repair business
at one point. But Dustin is correct; for the $200+ build fee, you can just
as easily buy a workstand and tools. In the end, you have a bike you've
built yourself, some good tools, good knowledge, and the pride of having
done it. So if money is worth more than time, please consider it.Also,
there are many online resources for bike repair/assembly. Including, of
course, this forum. Best of luck, Steve

Re: [RBW] What's the shortest stem that you would use?

2011-08-07 Thread stevef
If you think about it, a 2cm shorter stem with the noodles would move the
hoods back only a bit more than switching to the shorter reach Mark's bars.
So I don't think there'd be any difference in handling there, especially if
you're talking about handling while your hands are on the hoods or drops.
If raising the bars doesn't offer sufficient improvement, Id go by this: if
you like the long flat ramp of the Noodles for resting your hands on, get a
shorter stem and maybe narrower Noodles. If you usually ride on the hoods
anyway, maybe try the Mark's bars. (which will not have as flat a ramp nor
will the hooks be nearly parallel to the ramps, so they would feel quite
different...)

Re: [RBW] Assembly

2011-08-07 Thread Thomas Lynn Skean
I rode a Trek 7300 for a year or so (and over several eras of a couple years
each, a few other Treks) and had never done *any* work on a bike ever. I bought
a Samuel Hillborne and wheels over a year ago and, after spraying the frame's
insides with rust-protectant and letting that steep a couple days, built it
up over a weekend. I am *marginally* mechanically inclined. I made several
mistakes that required me to re-do things along the way. But nothing meaningly
harmful. I was riding my new bike a week after I got the frameset (two days of
actual building up). In my case (and probably in yours; ask RBW to confirm) my
frameset came with the headset installed (not adjusted). Already-installed
headset is good; I think installing a headset would be a little tricky for a
layman without specialized tools that cost scores of dollars. But *everything
else* is *very* doable by a layman. Some things will require special tools (at
least: housing cutters, bottom bracket tool). And a set of Allen wrenches will
be essential. But nothing that costs oodles of money or takes particular skill
to use

If you are mechanically inclined, are generally engineer-y, are willing to
spend *some* money on tools and supplies, and are *interested*, then you will
greatly benefit from putting it together yourself.

I've put 5,000 miles on my Hillborne and have not discovered *anything* I've
done wrong except that I misadjusted the derailer before the first time I rode
it and as a result the chain came off; temporarily disappointing but I was able
to fix it in 30 minutes and continued my ride. Nothing since. Putting together
a quality bike like a Rivendell production frameset is indeed easy.

If you *aren't* interested in how your bike goes together and fully intend to
have your local bike shop fix anything that goes wrong that's more serious than
a flat tire... then RBW's $200-ish assembly fee (maybe somewhat higher now;
check!) is a *great* deal. Given their expertise and care and interest, it'd be
worth $400 in my book. (Disclosure: my local bike shops have all disappointed
me; perhaps I'm bitter.) And it's fine if that's how you view your bike; you
own it, it doesn't own you.

Enjoy!

Yours,
Thomas Lynn Skean

 sure for what reason.

[RBW] Re: Assembly

2011-08-07 Thread EricP
Agree with the others, if you feel like it's something you'd like to
try, then it's not a bad investment to get the tools and a stand. I
did that for my Sam Hillborne. Spent a day in the garage putting
things together.

Now, the end product did not look as nice and neat as what comes out
of Rivendell. So that is a downgrade. But as it was my first full
build, it was fun. Besides the Rivendell videos other places like
Park Tools also have repair/building videos. I also invested in the
Park Tool Blue Book which comes in handy from time to time.

Personally, would love to be able to spend the extra money and buy a
bike built up from the good folks in Walnut Creek. Not sure it will
ever happen. However, it is a nice wish.

bought a Samuel Hillborne and wheels over a year ago and, after spraying the
frame's insides with rust-protectant and letting that steep a couple days,
built it up over a weekend. I am *marginally* mechanically inclined. I made
several mistakes that required me to re-do things along the way. But nothing
meaningly harmful. I was riding my new bike a week after I got the frameset
(two days of actual building up). In my case (and probably in yours; ask RBW
to confirm) my frameset came with the headset installed (not adjusted).
Already-installed headset is good; I think installing a headset would be a
little tricky for a layman without specialized tools that cost scores of
dollars. But *everything else* is *very* doable by a layman. Some things will
require special tools (at least: housing cutters, bottom bracket tool). And a
set of Allen wrenches will be essential. But nothing that costs oodles of
money or takes particular skill to use

If you are mechanically inclined, are generally engineer-y, are willing to
spend *some* money on tools and supplies, and are *interested*, then you will
greatly benefit from putting it together yourself.

I've put 5,000 miles on my Hillborne and have not discovered *anything* I've
done wrong except that I misadjusted the derailer before the first time I
rode it and as a result the chain came off; temporarily disappointing but I
was able to fix it in 30 minutes and continued my ride. Nothing since.
Putting together a quality bike like a Rivendell production frameset is
 indeed easy.

If you *aren't* interested in how your bike goes together and fully intend to
have your local bike shop fix anything that goes wrong that's more serious
than a flat tire... then RBW's $200-ish assembly fee (maybe somewhat higher
now; check!) is a *great* deal. Given their expertise and care and interest,
it'd be worth $400 in my book. (Disclosure: my local bike shops have all
disappointed me; perhaps I'm bitter.) And it's fine if that's how you view
your bike; you own it, it doesn't own you.

 Enjoy!

Re: [RBW] What's the shortest stem that you would use?

2011-08-07 Thread Solomander
Just went out to the garage with a plumb line. The seat seems to be right
on the money, in the same relative position as on my Litespeed. I am going
to wait a week or two before doing anything else. I keep waffling about
whether to change the bars or the stem. The tops of my Noodles are in the
same relative position as the anatomic bars on my Litespeed. On the one
hand, Mark's bars will likely move the hoods back far enough. OTOH, I like
the Noodles and doubt that moving the tops back an inch will make that much
of a difference. I may wind up flipping a coin :)

[RBW] Panaracer Col de Vie tire inflation

2011-08-07 Thread Zaelia
My last pair of Panaracer Col de Vie tires said keep inflate to 50
lbs [sic]. I often inflated them to roughly 60 psi (with a little
more air in the back tire). One mechanic noted on a sales receipt 65
psi (overrating) at client request. I cannot recall where, but I read
somewhere that people were inflating their tires in this range.

I had these tires for over a year and roughly 2500 km (1553 miles) and
didn't have any known issues. A friend was the one to suggest it was
time to get new tires after looking at the sidewalls and noting some
striation. Could over inflating shorten the life of these tires?

My new tires have Japanese writing on the sidewall (very helpful) and
300kPa (30kgf/cm2). Google calculated for me that 300 kPa is
43.5113213 pounds per square inch, so this is roughly what I inflated
the new tires to.

So, I'm wondering
   * could over inflating shorten the life of these tires?
   * why the two different pressures for the same tires?
   * what do other Panaracer Col de Vie users inflate their tires to?

Finally, when I bought the first pair, I bought a spare because I was
led to believe it would be so difficult to get 650B tires. It has been
hanging in a dark closet. What is the life of a tire kept like this?
The next time I get new tires, should I use this spare and hang a new
spare?

Thanks

2011-08-07 Thread cyclotourist
Hi Zaelia, tire pressure is dynamic, and should be based on the rider/bike
weight as well as the width of the tire and riding conditions. No one
pressure is best. Bicycle Quarterly made a cool little calculator that
Philip updated and Jim posted here (oops, may not work anymore, thanks
Google). I use it and have been VERY satisfied with it's recommendations.
FWIW, my total weight (me + bike) was 200lbs and I ran CdlVs 60 back, 35
front. Never a pinch flat.

[RBW] Rivendell Job Opening, Shipping Department.

2011-08-07 Thread John Bennett
As regular readers of the site know, Vaughn is moving on, first to
Japan, and then back to Colorado, his old stomping grounds. We need to
replace him. Here's our ad. It sounds pretty blunt, I know, but I
figured it was better to be straight at the beginning than 6 months
down the road.

If you know anyone who might fit the bill, send them my way. If you
fit the bill, send me your resume. And thank you.

Shipper, F/T

This is not a dead-end job, far from it, but it's not a stepping
stone, either. We're looking for someone who wants a job in the
shipping department, not a person who is biding their time until they
can design frames, assemble bikes, or wait on customers.

Any knowledge of bikes and parts will be useful, since you'll be
picking and boxing them. But strictly, it is not necessary, as long as
you can learn.

We want someone who needs a job, likes cardboard as much (if not more)
than bikes, doesn't require a huge salary to get by in the Bay Area,
and is ready to commit to long-term employment.

It's hot in the summer, cold in the winter. 50-90 packages a day. No
back-up. When the other shipper is gone, you're it. Punctuality,
dependability, and maturity required.

Unglamorous, but good work. Benefits after 90 days. Commuter Checks if
you don't live close. 401K. 8:30-4:30. Monday through Friday. $25K/
year.

Send resume and cover letter to John. j...@rivbike.com

[RBW] Longboard fenders with Schwalbe Marathon 700x38

2011-08-07 Thread Scotty

I have a 59 cm AHH with side pull brakes and the fender tire set up in the
title. Technically this set up does work. With the bike in the stand I get
clearance for the fenders, which I must say look beautiful, but out on the
road any vibration and braking causes the fenders to contact the tires just
slightly. Not enough to slow me down or even cause a noticeable resistance
but just enough to make one of those annoying sounds that I hate to hear
when riding. I cannot seem to adjust this out. Maybe it is just nitpicky and
it probably shouldn’t bother me but it does. It doesn’t make sense to me to
replace 80 dollars worth of tires for 40 dollars worth of fender so I have
decided to remove the fenders. If I get to the point where I want to replace
the tires I will go with something a little narrower and put the fenders
back on, but it may be a while because I have yet to wear out a pair of
Marathons.

This is not a big issue for me because I have my Surly with fenders and if
the weather looks like I may need fenders it will give me a good reason to
ride that bike, but if I was ordering again I would go with slightly
narrower tires like maybe the 700x35. I have read before that Schwalbe
sizes their tires a little different than other brands so maybe someone
using a different brand with these fenders can add some experience.

Re: [RBW] Longboard fenders with Schwalbe Marathon 700x38

Scotty,

On my Atlantis I've run the Schwalbe Marathon Plus 700x38 and currently use
the Schwalbe Marathon XR 700x38, both wit the regular SKS fenders (like the
look of those longboards!). I also had the benign though annoying rubbing at
times. I fixed this by re-bending the strut tabs (the tabs the struts run
through to anchor to the fender) a bit. Close to the fender, I bent then ~90
degrees out and then turned the ends back down to receive the struts. Bought
me a few millimeters and a whole lot of quiet.

Hope this helps,

clearance for the fenders, which I must say look beautiful, but out on the
road any vibration and braking causes the fenders to contact the tires just
If I get to the point where I want to replace
the tires I will go with something a little narrower and put the fenders
back on, but it may be a while because I have yet to wear out a pair of
 Marathons.**

Re: [RBW] Panaracer Col de Vie tire inflation

2011-08-07 Thread Zaelia
I need to read things more carefully. Initially, I only put down my weight.
I don't know exactly what my bike weighs, so I added 30 and then added
another 20 for gear. This changed the numbers to 49 rear and 30 front.
Thanks for pointing that out to me.

I'm still curious about the other things as well, if anyone has any insight.

   * could over inflating shorten the life of these tires?
   * why the two different pressures for the same tires?

Finally, when I bought the first pair, I bought a spare because I was
led to believe it would be so difficult to get 650B tires. It has been
hanging in a dark closet. What is the life of a tire kept like this?
The next time I get new tires, should I use this spare and hang a new
spare?

Thanks

Re: [RBW] Panaracer Col de Vie tire inflation

2011-08-07 Thread cyclotourist
Gladly. The differences in pressure are based on the average bicycle
bearing 60% of the weight on the rear tire. This is why rear tires wear
faster and rear wheels are often built stronger. The extra weight means the
tire needs to be run at a higher pressure. In the spreadsheet you can
change the percentages, but 60/40 is pretty accurate.

As long as there is not an ozone source in the closet (usually generated
from electric motors like in a refrigerator) the tire in the closet should
last a long time. When you are ready to mount it, look it over carefully
for cracks. Fine surface cracks are not a problem, but large ones going
through the rubber and to the casing are a concern. If you wanted to put it
in a plastic bag, like a trash bag, that might protect it even more. That's
probably not necessary though. It doesn't hurt to have a spare on hand.

Hope that answered a few questions :-)
