[RBW] Re: What's your winter project? 2011 version

2011-11-18 Thread Benedikt
I just converted an old set of tires to some DIY studded snow tires.
We only get snow a few weeks out of the year here and I just couldn't
bring myself to purchase some. These old tires were perfect for that
and it might snow this weekend.

On Nov 17, 1:36 pm, William tapebu...@gmail.com wrote:
I just read through the 2010 winter projects thread.  Pretty entertaining.

This winter, I've got a few projects that I'm planning.  I'm doing another
650B build.  Between my Hilsen and Bombadil, I hardly need another 650B
bike, but I wanted to try the low trail skinny tube thing, and I had an
 extra wheelset.  So that's ongoing.

Every bike is going to get another coat of shellac on the handlebars.  The
ones that have been used the most (Hilsen) or have been on the roof the
 most (Bomba) need it.

The Hilsen will get some drivetrain work to prepare it for another brevet
season.  I'll also do some optimization of fender lines on all the bikes,
possibly making my own spacers if needed.  Finally I'll go through some of
the older parts and sell some things off.

[RBW] FS: W.I. Wheelset, OMM racks, Frame pumps etc.

2011-11-18 Thread Robert Perks
I am still working on clearing out some of the things have in the garage,
and would like to offer it up to the lists before the leftovers go up on
ebay.

- First up is a nice set of stout touring wheels. White Industries M16
hubs laced up to a set of 40 hole Velocity Dyad rims with Wheelsmith double
butted spokes. I originally had these wheels built up by Peter White a few
years ago for a 29′er MTB that was being pushed into commuter duty. Over
the years these were used on and off road but not abused. The rim’s
braking surfaces, not used on disk wheels, shows signs of minor pitting.
The real wheel has a couple of small dings, is close to true and could use
a tune up if you are really precise about such things. The biggest ding
shown is still less than pinky wide, and from the hard lesson learned about
those exit only car tire wrecker things, yes they will thrash a bike tire
if you catch the corner of a spike. The Front wheel is near perfect after
all these years. I last had these wheels on my Rawland dSogn, now gone,
and do not see a bike with disk brakes in my near future. Asking $400
shipped in the continental US

- Frame pump lot: have tried to like frame pumps over the years, for
tradition’s sake. They and I just do not get along for some reason and I
prefer a mini pump. That said I know many of you love your frame pumps. I
am cleaning out my whole lot. If you want them all, I will do it for $60
shipped. The older ones are in different states of repair, all push air,
but may be parts donors. The two hPX3 pumps are like new, sat on the frame
and one was used once.

- Specialized Model I 38cm These are a near new takeoff from the
specialized sequoia we built up for my wife. The original owner claimed
the bike to be ridden around the block a few times and then stored, and I
believe him based on the bike’s condition. These are a very nice set of
traditional style road bars. 38cm at the tips of the drops. The only
scratches are where the factory slid the brakes up on the bars, near the
start of the bend. Asking $40 shipped in the Continental US

-Old Man Mountain Cold Springs Rack set: A pair, front and rear, of Cold
Springs racks for disk Mount 29″er. Both in used condition, but with
plenty of life left in them. Customised with front light bar and a rear
blinky mount on the inside for protection. A little bit of road rash on
the rear corner and on the deck from a saddle bag mount that rubbed.
Hardware shown is included, and I have a couple more of the little angled
pieces to mount to the brake studs of needed. I also have the extra long
skewers that originally came with the racks. These both measure exactly
390mm from axle to bottom of deck. They should fit a 29er with room or a
700c touring bike with fenders. Intended to be used with disc brakes, but
will work with almost any bike setup. Asking $200 shipped in the
continental US

- Saddles: I have an Avocet Condor, Avocet Touring and Selle Royal
Superleggero Prestige. All in serviceable condition and asking $35 each
shipped in the US

-Tires: Maxis Ignitor 700x2,125 used in near new condition. $25 shipped.
I also have some old wire bead Specialized expedition and Avocet fast grips
that are in OK condition, but tires this old still make me slow down a
bit. If they interest you let me know and I will get the pics up.

Most of the above is up with pictures on the garage sale sub sections of my
site ( oceanaircycles.com ) now, what is not will be by later this
morning. If the item is sold it will stay up, but listed as sold for a few
days, If you feel that my prices are out of line, but you really want
something, let me know and maybe we can work it out. Likewise, if you are
buying multiple items there could be a bit of room to save on shipping.
Thnaks for taking a look

[RBW] Re: Serial Number Database

2011-11-18 Thread Allan in Portland
This is pretty interesting. If I may, a few suggestions to consider:

* Make it publicly searchable (sans personally identifying information of
course)
* Add a Sell Date field
* Add By previous owner selection to the Assembled-by field
* Make the Model field a drop down
* Make the Size/Number field context aware, which is to say one can only
choose the sizes that were available given the model chosen in the drop-down
* Add a color field, again context aware with a custom option
* Admittedly I expect it hard/tedious for Riv to do in most cases and
probably impossible in a few, but given the model serial number display
the date location of Manufacture, or if too hard add these as fields for
owner to enter, obviously with Unknown as one of the choices
* I suppose this could get out of hand in a hurry, but a few of the build
details, at least wheels would be interesting

-Allan Folz

I saw my first San Marcos in the wild here in Portland today.
Looked to be a 63cm nicely set up with the Soma porteur rack, wood
fenders, and porteur-ish bars. It looked like they nailed the brake
reach--pads at the bottom of the slots. The metallic light blue is
very close if not identical to the old Romulus blue. I think the lugs
are actually a little fancier than the Romulus lugs. I look forward
to seeing more of these. Even without the 2TTs, it would have stood
out at the racks--a very distinctive bike.

It might just be me, but I have never understood the need to absolutely
have saddlebag loops. I have on many various bikes just given a slight
twist to the saddlebag straps and hung them over the saddle rails
themselves. Never even remotely had a problem. It (may) not keep the
saddlebag as far rearward as with loops, but its never been far enough
forward to pose a problem. For me at least.

I have actually had a few saddlebag straps start to wear at the thin sharp
metal loops on some of my saddles and in those cases, I just as easliy
secure them to the seat rails.

Give it a try.

Yes, building your own wheels brings a lot of satisfaction. If you
take your time, they will turn out great, and be very reliable. I've

I need to build at least 2 wheel sets this winter. One 650B set for my
campeur (Grandpa of Bombadil):
http://www.flickr.com/photos/39151498@N07/sets/72157626711955076/
Another set of wheels for my 1954 R.O. Harrison:

I'm also cleaning up a 1956 W.F. Holdsworth Whirlwind:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/39151498@N07/sets/72157627733642143/

I'm going to try to get these three bikes done in time for the Seattle
Bike Expo Vintage Show in March.

I've also worked on that Message in a Bottle guitar part - it's not
technically difficult, but boy are those notes spread out on the fret
board. I've got largish hands, but I remember some aching fingers from
those riffs! That's a fun one, though.

Enjoy!

Re: [RBW] Non-leather saddle with saddlebag loops

2011-11-18 Thread Anne Paulson
I have no saddles with loops, and lots of saddlebags. But when I try
mounting the bags without loops, they twist. I've done it a lot but it
has never worked well.

It might just be me, but I have never understood the need to absolutely have
saddlebag loops.  I have on many various bikes just given a slight twist to
the saddlebag straps and hung them over the saddle rails themselves.  Never
even remotely had a problem.  It (may) not keep the saddlebag as far
rearward as with loops, but its never been far enough forward to pose a
 problem.  For me at least.

trigger on paint (it's time) but I'll see if the cookie jar has enough in

Most likely it will end up a s 2 x 5 or 6. Albatross for now, but I really

2) If the cookie jar is deep enough, a new crankset and seatpost for my

would really complete the ensemble. Of course, once I get that far, I'll
need to swap the parts to a Simpleone! Come to think of it, realistically
that might be Winter 13 or 14.

RE: [RBW] What's your winter project? 2011 version

2011-11-18 Thread John Speare
I think I might finally be reaching a level of bike-contentment. This time of
year I normally have a gob of plans for winter projects. But I'm not feeling a
burning desire to change much or procure new bikes.

The only for-sure thing I have in my winter queue is to build a lasher rack
for my camping/dirt road explorer bike. The purpose of the lasher is to provide
a spot, low, in the back, where I can lash light/bulky stuff (sleeping pad and
bag).

Maybe I'll overhaul all of my hubs too. And maybe re-pack my cup/cone bottom
brackets. But I doubt it.

I might put brifters on one more bike. Since discovering and verifying the
Campy 10-speed-shifts-shimano-8-speed perfectly solution this year, I'm
tempted to roll that out across all my drop-bar bikes. That whole shift while
you stand deal turns out to be pretty righteous on the commute. I've done it
for years with bar-ends, but I phased those out over the last couple years in
favor of indexed 8-speed DT shifters, and shifting while standing and in the
hoods is a whole different ball of wax.
