[RBW] Re: updated geometry chart

2011-12-02 Thread Garth
Is the chart up to date accurate though? When I inquired about a 62cm.
Hunq frame, I was informed the TT was more like 64 or 64.5cm , I can't
remember which. That would change some other dimensions as well. The chart
shows the original specs, but nothing new as far as I can tell.

[RBW] Bike Winter + DIY Balaclava

2011-12-02 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
I've been riding through Minneapolis winters since 2004. Not only is it doable,
but it's fun in a different way than summer cycling is! Since then I've noticed
a huge increase in the number of cyclists out there in the cold and snow. Also,
there are many more good products dedicated to winter cycling, and much more
info about it on the web.

My former Atlantis, armed with Nokians, handled several long winters with style
and function.

We don't have much snow, but it's 12F this morning. Maybe I'll have another cup
of coffee before I head out.

I think the actual TT on the 58 is ~61cm which makes the theoretical TT
about 63cm, and the actual TT on the 62 is ~63cm and the theoretical TT is

2011-12-02 Thread Roger
There may be a misunderstanding here.

I think you'll find stated on line 2 of Dave's chart that the number
given for the 6 degree TT bikes is the theoretical length. The
internet spreadsheet looks to me consistent with the previous pdf I
downloaded and also from when I talked with Jay on the day I test rode
a 64cm Sam and a 62cm Hunqa earlier this year.

Maybe Dave will confirm.

[RBW] A new member of my bike stable

2011-12-02 Thread William
It's not a Rivendell, but it might be of interest to several of you. I've
built up a Rawland rSogn for myself to beef up my 650B bike stable. It
takes knobbies like my Bombadil, but is a compact double and is lighter.
It takes my beloved Nitto Mini front rack and the awesome Platrack
(Rivendell content!) for S24Os. It might become my commute bike, it might
become my mixed-terrain brevet bike. It will allow me to explore 'this
low-trail thing' for myself. There's so much talk that seems like
hyperbole to me, that I just had to try for myself. I finished it late
last night and only rode it around the block a few times. So far it feels
like a really nice 650B bike, but no night and day strangeness vs. my
Hilsen. Time will tell. Copious pictures of the build:

Metric Unthreaded Spacers from McMaster (

M5 (at least on my Sam and wife's Betty). I'd go with 10mm OD (outside

The best fender installation writeup I've read is from Bicycle Quarterly,
but i think plastic fenders are a bit different.

[RBW] Thanksgiving ride through Napa

2011-12-02 Thread Ad Noyce
Hey all,

Took a nice ride with family through Napa last weekend and snapped a quick
photo. This is my first ride out with the SOMA B Line 38mm tires and
Shimano 3N71 hub:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/26905387@N04/6442207405/in/photostream

In case you're wondering, the handlebar angle is a little off since I had
just swapped out brakes and levers. I am enjoying the Tektro CR720s far
more than the IRD Cafam cantilevers I had on the original build, which
squealed no matter what I did.

See ya at the garage sale. I'm up for a ride!

Best,
Adam

2011-12-02 Thread Smitty-A-Go-Go
P.S. Where does one get those spacers Riv shows in their video?

They can be found on the fastener isle of any hardware store... look for a
drawer marked spacers. You want M5 spacers for standard rack and fender
mounts. M5 is the diameter. They come in a handful of widths. I use
aluminum but they also have stainless steel. If you want to get fancy you
might be able to find a brass bushing in the bushings drawer that'd work
too. The aluminum ones are something like 20-50 cents each depending on the
width.

Or... the truly resourceful just use a piece of a cork. :-)

Yes, I'm referring only to the theoretical length as seen in previous
charts. I found the email Keven sent me ,and indeed he replied that the
theoretical TT on the 62 was 64.5, not 62.5 as stated in the pdf's since
the frame came out. Other dimensions would be different too then. I don't
know if other sizes are longer also.

[RBW] Re: Non-leather saddle with saddlebag loops

2011-12-02 Thread Bob Cooper
In an earlier post, I said that the Nitto saddlebag clap with quick-
release skewer (can’t remember official name of the product) only
works with Brooks saddles.

To clarify, it only positions the saddlebag where it should be
relative to the saddle, on a classic Brooks such as the Pro, B-17 and
so on.

If you attach the Nitto unit to a “modern” saddle, the Selle San Marco
Rolls, for example, you will find that it droops back there and
positions the saddlebag quite a bit lower.

If you ride a 58cm frame with 622 wheels, as I do, you will find that
your fully-loaded Nelson Long Flap is rubbing the tire. Probably with
559 wheels, too.

Sorry,

Bob with the 75cm saddle height

Re: [RBW] A new member of my bike stable

2011-12-02 Thread Ray Shine
I have one of those, too! A red one. I bought it from a list member last
December. Neat bike. Maybe I'll get a few pix.

Subject: [RBW] A new member of my bike stable

It's not a Rivendell, but it might be of interest to several of you. I've
built
up a Rawland rSogn for myself to beef up my 650B bike stable. It takes
knobbies
like my Bombadil, but is a compact double and is lighter. It takes my beloved
Nitto Mini front rack and the awesome Platrack (Rivendell content!) for S24Os.
It might become my commute bike, it might become my mixed-terrain brevet bike.
It will allow me to explore 'this low-trail thing' for myself. There's so
much
talk that seems like hyperbole to me, that I just had to try for myself. I
finished it late last night and only rode it around the block a few times. So
far it feels like a really nice 650B bike, but no night and day strangeness vs.
my Hilsen. Time will tell. Copious pictures of the build:

+1 on the Dia Compe Gran Compe 202 Non Aero Brake Levers. I've got 'em on
my moustache bars and really like 'em. -- Forrest
