[RBW] More FAT 700C tires For Sale
As I've explained a few times now, I sold my 56cm Hillborne because I decided I really want a 58cm Atlantis. Well, the build kit that came off the Hillborne is slowly getting repurposed on different bikes, and so the Atlantis is receding on the horizon. It's still out there, but it's farther away now than it was when I still had a Hillborne. So, the only real perishable parts, the FAT 700C tires I have, are up for liquidation. Up for sale today is a pair of IRC Mythos Slick 700x42 knobbies. Anybody with a Hillborne (or a Quickbeam, or a SimpleOne, or a Hunqapillar, or a Bombadil, or an Atlantis) that wants to run it as a mudder might have a lot of fun with these tires. I put them on the Hillborne and went for about 20 miles of mixed terrain riding on them. So they are used but functionally new. I'll include a pair of suitable tubes as well. $50 shipped for the pair, tires and tubes. Here's pictures of my former Hillborne with these tires on it, showing clearance at all relevant points. http://www.flickr.com/photos/45758191@N04/sets/72157626464189260/with/5604248171/ I can ship today. Re: [RBW] What does a light set of metal fenders actually weigh?
A set of 35mm wide 700c Electra Ticino alloy fenders weighs 390g on my scale. Not quite wide enough for your Jack Browns. This does not include the 4 fasteners to to attach the stays to the dropouts nor the bolt for the chainstay bridge. It does include fender-to-stay hardware and tangs for attaching to the front and rear brake bolts. I'd guess a compete set wide enough for jack browns would be 500-ish. [RBW] Jack Browns or Schwalbe Marathon Supremes?
I'm working on retrofitting an old mid-90's hybrid bicycle and one of the changes I want to make is new tires. I'm trying to decide between the Jack Brown's and the Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 700 x 35c. Has anyone ridden both and can comment on any significant differences? I'm guessing they are going to come out within 2 mm of each other in width. Will one be cushier? Will one be firmer? Will one seem quicker? Re: [RBW] What does a light set of metal fenders actually weigh?
Thanks Ryan. So is the rule of thumb that for a given size/width Honjo aluminum fenders are lighter than Gilles Berthoud stainless steel fenders? That would certainly make sense. How about stays and fasteners--is there a difference in weight between Honjo and Berthoud? Are Berthoud stays and fasteners compatible with Honjo fenders? I am trying to decide what kind of fenders to mount on a custom 650B rando bike that is transitioning from the daydreaming to the planning stage. I like the super long versions of the Honjo fenders. And some of the hammered and fluted versions look gorgeous on the right bike. But I think I prefer the Berthoud stays mounting hardware. You are less likely to catch a mounting bolt/daruma on the front fender with your toe. And Berthoud steel fenders have proven to be quite durable in my experience. I have a 1 headset from them that is great, as are there brake levers, tandem levers, and thudbuster seat post, which my stoker really likes.. I also have an older American Classic seat post, which is light and strong, but i gather they have discontinued the silver version. Re: [RBW] What does a light set of metal fenders actually weigh?
Owning both types, I prefer the steel Berthoud over the aluminum Honjo fenders. Like how the stays are bolted to the fenders on the Berthoud better as well. I have the stays and bolts for both currently, but no scale to weigh them... I cannot seem to have been able to find Berthouds for 42mm 650B tires yet... Only Honjos. Right now my Atlantis and Hunqapillar have steel Berthouds and my Homer has Honjos. I'm trying to fit 47mm Honjos on the Betty. Got the rear one in place, but am making adjustments to the daruma for the front to address the brake bolt for the front Silver brakes that doesn't allow the daruma to be centered. I also need to trim its length a bit so it doesn't rub the tire. Will need to do the same with the small stay darumas front and rear. Not to rain on your parade, but my guess is that at least the dropouts and the lugs are made in Taiwan, so you're already in the realm of assembled in the US. Of course, you have to draw the line somewhere, and yours is a perfectly reasonable one. My impression is that American Classic has been sourcing at least some of its products from Asia for about 10 years now. [RBW] Re: What does a light set of metal fenders actually weigh?
When we tested fenders for Bicycle Quarterly (Vol. 2, No. 1), we found for complete sets with stays and hardware: - Honjo aluminum H40, 444 g. - Berthoud stainless 700C: 598 g - SKS narrow: 510 g - Berthoud carbon: 248 g - Salmon aluminum: 686 g I prefer the Honjo aluminum fenders, as they are easy to shape for a perfect fit. The Berthoud stainless fenders apparently have a tendency to crack over time. Well after searching the internet and looking around I saw nothing to confirm your accusation that Berthoud fenders fail any sooner that anyone else's. (prone to crack) As a matter of fact I was able to find more negative information on the Honjo's. Either way both were minimal and in no way indicated a trend. I have planet bike fenders on one bike, sks longboard on 2 bikes, and berhoud steel on two bikes. I don't have Berthoud because I believe them to be better than Honjo. [RBW] Re: Jack Browns or Schwalbe Marathon Supremes?
I wore out a set of JB Blues out on a '91 Bridgestone RB-T I use as my commuter. I then tried a set of Marathon Supremes, but in 32mm size. Wore those out. I'm back with the JBB's now. The Supremes were a nice tire, long lasting, but had more rolling resistance. They really rumble when you roll them across a smooth surface and my experience has been that translates into more resistance on pavement. I think I'll stay with the JBB's. Though I will check them more often for embedded debris than I did the Supremes. [RBW] Re: Jack Browns or Schwalbe Marathon Supremes?
Consider a third option as well, the Vittoria Randonneur Hyper. Available in 32, 35 and 38 mm. My 32's measure 34 mm wide on Velocity A23 rims, they should be a true 32 on a narrower rim. 365 gm (measured), in between the JB blue and green, nice rolling, reasonably flat-resistant, black sidewalls (won't rot in the sun like a skinwall) with reflective stripes. They fit well, too. Every Vittoria I have used has mounted straight and true, securely snug but not overly tight, unlike some of the Panaracer-made tires I've had. They are also a fair bit less expensive than the Supremes. I like them, and there has been a fair bit of love for them from others on the iBOB list. I ride the 70x40's MS and love itits actually about 37-38 mm wide so just perfect for me. So far no flats and its a speedy comfy tire. [RBW] When it rains it pours. ( Long post)
Riding without my Rivendell is meh but doable. Trying to make the best of the sad situation by riding with old college road bike (carbon fork, no spoke wheels, no fender mounts. Grant already scold at my clipless shoes.) and with good old friends. Weird December with no rain, but I'm not complaining. Good rides so far, got to ride the Rivendell HQ to meet with a buddy of mine, ran into Erik from Cosmic Country( Pictures are amazing by the way. check him out. http://bikenoir.blogspot.com/) who just recently got back from a overnight trip at Mt.Diablo. Got to see my buddy Will's hanky panky new bike. Old MB-2 that he got sandblasted and clear coated. Beautiful bike, super functional huge thanks to Vince and everyone at Rivendell for helping him out. His bike turned out really well and he seems really happy about now he just needs to get it dirty, hopefully we can get a camping trip in soon. Pictures prove that Will's bike exist: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjxv1zpH My other good buddy Duy coming up from LA brought up his Rambouillet (by far one of my favorite names for a bike). His bike doesn't see a lot of dirt in LA so when he comes up we try to get it as dirty as possible. We take the dirt trail up from Lake Chabot to Skyline Road and ride through West Ridge. Funny looking stares from both ends of the spectrum from Mountain bikers and Road bikers(Riding non-lycra clothing on a nice dirt trail with a carbon fork road bike). But not from Changing Gears Head Mechanic Barry! Ran into this guy with his well weathered stuntjumper right at the end of West ridge. I was lucky enough to ride with Barry on a couple rides and this guy rides everywhere and everything. Truly inspired by what he does at Changing Gears. Today Riding down Fernside Street in Alameda with my good friend Duy. Nice chill day deserved a nice chill ride especially after riding through the Berkeley hills the other day. We come up to the Eastshore street stop sign. I stop but don't put my foot down (trackstand to keep up) look left, no traffic and right at the motorcycle cop parked on East Shore street and I roll through the intersection WITH the car directly across the street from me. Motorcycle cop pulls me over for rolling through a stop sign because I didn't put my foot down. I try to contest but he tells me to save the talking for the judge if I want to contest the ticket. Venting I know. Even worse case is that Duy gets a ticket too! Bah. It's a way to start the day. Pictures proved that it happened: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjxvzoXM Meh. Despite the ticket so far so good with the Christmas break. Looking forward for more rides. Still looking for my bike. But after this ticket I feel like I might never find it again. I've come to terms with that. Before school starts I WILL be stopping by RHQ to test ride some bikes. Hoping for a Holiday Miracle on my stolen bike or at least not another ticket before the New Years. This will be one of my last post for a while.
