[RBW] Re: SH/AHH sizing question

2012-02-28 Thread Mike On A Bike
Just to be clear regarding following Rivendell's advice: Keven told me
to get at least a 66 when I told him my PBH initially, and I muddled
up the process with bad measurements and inexperience. With better
measurements and knowing what I like a la Rivendell bikes for the Sam,
he told me a 64cm Sam would fit like the 68 that I should have gotten,
and he was completely confident that the 64 would fit me really well.
In short, you'd do well to get good measurements and take Riv's
suggestion.

Keven was more than right, as the Sam is the nicest bike I would ever
find it necessary/reasonable to own. Grant does seem to have a truly
extraordinary ability to design a frame for maximum comfort,
performance and fun.

Like a Volvo 122 rear brake drum... torch, puller, torch, puller,
torch, puller. No one is probably that excited about burning the paint
off the BB shell just to get the cranks off, though. That just reminds
me how much I hate working on cars. Bikes are bad enough.

I've ridden the route coming back from davis. It's flatish and windy
at some sections. Not particular interesting you either ride really
fast through it or you have company to talk to. I was planning on
riding to get to the show with minimal stoppage , but if I can get
some company it would be great to meet with some people to ride.

[RBW] Re: Today's Blug Post

2012-02-28 Thread benzzoy
It's probably Ultra-Torque's cost-saving cousin, Power-Torque. It's
essentially the same design as the Shimano Hollowtech II or SRAM
cranks, with the complete BB spindle being rigidly attached to the
right (drive) side arm; however, unlike the Shimano or SRAM cranks
that uses a spline+pinch bolt method, the Power-Torque uses a conical
spline system that does not have a self-extracting method. Thus the
clunky pulley puller you see in the picture that Mark was wrestling
with (apparently unsuccessfully).

I would guess the left arm probably wasn't tightened to spec, or the
interface wasn't lubricated/prepared during installation, such that
the arm had seized onto the BB spindle. I mean, if a pulley puller
can't extract it and even apparently broken during use, the arm's
pretty stuck on there. I wonder if they had tried heat. Aluminum
(arm) and steel (BB spindle) have different thermal expansion
coefficients...

I'm signed up already and digging the comics, so while I did it I'm not sending
an e-mail to Grant for a $20 credit. It'd be money badly spent for Riv.

[RBW] Today's Blug Post

2012-02-28 Thread Peter Pesce
"Stuff Grant thinks is neat" is a tricky business model. Obviously there is a
strong core of people who think that bike stuff-Grant-thinks-is-neat is neat,
but the model would obviously be weaker at the margins. Riv always seemed least
strong as a lifestyle company, most strong as a bicycle maker. As long as the
lifestyle accoutrements don't drag down the bike company, no harm done. But at
the first sign of trouble, and we've all been privvy to those signs, I'd lose
the postcards, and other peripheral niceties long before I got rid of the
SimpleOne and SlickerSack.

Agree on Mr. Moon & Co., although I have to have the comments section
"off" to truly enjoy the strip. Been re-subscribed since the strip re-
launched. (Was also a patron before the hiatus.)

As to what Rivendell sells, that is their choice. They happen to be
my source for Kookaburra and shaving cream. But not everything
catches my eye. But it is amazing after a few years how much of the
stuff they sell has ended up at my place.

Might not be able to justify multiple Rivendell bikes, but do have
multiple MUSA knickers. (As well as pants, shorts and most other
clothing.)

Interesting that the crank is no cooperating as it looks like an Ultra-

the 10mm bolt and wiggle the two halves apart?

I'd like to hear more from Grant about his touring, camping, and
cycling excursions in the 70s and early 80s. I absolutely love that
photo of him on Shasta. I also love Grant's tangential rambling blog
post. It's one of the many quirky things I love about Rivendell.

As for Yehuda Moon... just not my thing.

With the deal Grant is offering, you can't go wrong.

The "little goodies" are hard to criticize but I can see stuff like
that being a bit of drag on profits. The upcoming Rivendell poster is
intriguing, and I need some balance for the Hiawatha posters :). I
got one the metric tape measures a few years back, and that's a
stretch to being bike related. It's nice to have some odd bits like

Umm. Grant has weird nuts? OK that was immature, I know what Steve meant and
I shouldn't click send but it made me laugh. It's been one of those days and I
apologize to anyone who might be offended by my occasionally Beavis-y humor.

I like the variety of stuff at Riv and whenever I am shopping I check those
things out. I find that Grant and I often have some similar notions about
what's neat (currently it's puukko and Barlow knives. If you haven't checked
out puukko knives, do a web search. There are some astonishing knives hand
made by Finnish and non-Finnsh masters. Check out some of these:

finds and puts up for sale. And sometimes there's a neat story about the
artisan(s) behind the items and that's cool too.

A real challenge as a business for Riv is that they sell good stuff that
doesn't wear out. I bought an All-Rounder in 1996 and haven't worn it out yet.
Bought Phil hubs and it seems like they will outlive me. Nitto stem and bars,
gonna last a long while yet. Brooks saddle, ditto (and it's 35 years old
already). SunTour derailleurs still going strong. Good stuff but not replaced
every two years. The problem with selling good durable products is that you
keep needing new customers because your old customers aren't coming in all the
time to replace worn out unrepairables. Do Riv a favor and send 'em new
customers!

Now if only I could get freewheels as fine shifting, perfectly geared, quietly
coasting and nice looking as the old Sachs ARIS 12-24 7 speeds (maybe with
harder cogs that don't wear out so fast). I'm down to my last one (Jim, don't
tell Mongo I put one of those back on my bike...). Maybe I can find a
machinist to make me replacement cogs from stainless...

[RBW] Re: Today's Blug Post

2012-02-28 Thread Stephen S
The notecards, posters, and postcards are all bike stuff. They shouldn't
even count in the marginally-bicycle stuff category in my opinion. Now
granted they aren't bike components, accessories, or clothing but they
should still be called bike stuff. I like the posters and have bought some
to put up as art around my apartment and intend to buy more posters from
Riv and hopefully more of the Hiawatha Cyclery posters
http://www.hiawathacyclery.com/cart/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=11&products_id=348&zenid=e788da27f59e5935eb10a33310ea30c5
.

For me it adds to the cycling culture. I don't see myself ever buying into
all of Grant's ideas but I see the value in a good amount of them. I pick
and choose the things that I care about and am interested in. I would hate
to see everything ancillary to the frames, parts, and accessories removed
from Rivendell.

Re: [RBW] Re: recent Atlantis changes

2012-02-28 Thread René Sterental
If by the 3 mounts on the seat stays you mean these *
http://tinyurl.com/3v28e6l* then the purpose is to be able to mount the
shorter/smaller version of the Nitto Big Rear Rack on the larger 700c
models (my photo shows the smaller rack model mounted on the 58
Hunqapillar). The greatest advantage of the smaller Nitto rear rack over
the larger one, is that the smaller one fits much closer to the seat stays
and thus goes under the saddle better. I prefer such a setup for the large
saddle bags (Sackville or otherwise) as it prevents the top of the rack
from interfering with the saddlebag and even allow the saddle bag to rest
there instead of falling on top of it as you can see in the photo (showing
an Acorn large saddlebag, which is much smaller than the Sackville or the
Carradice Camper).

This is a recent modification/addition that I believe started in the last
12-18 months on some models. It's my preferred seat stay option now. I
don't have it on my Atlantis, which is a bit older than that.

I've poached campsites on Mt. Tam and in Marin headlands many times over
the years. They key has been showing up late, making minimal visual and
physical impact, and leaving early. On the off-chance that you run into a
ranger or land manager, you're less likely to be cited if you can show that
you're exercising a healthy respect for the park/lands they're patrolling.

Re: [RBW] Re: Who's going to NAHBS?

2012-02-28 Thread Lee Chae
My initial plans to ride up to the show have been canceled due to
other events. But, I was planning on creating a ride based on the SF
Randonneurs' Davis 200K route. You can find the cue sheet here:

http://sfrandonneurs.org/route-archive.htm

A few notes:
- I haven't ridden this route, but I know that SFR tries to choose
safe and scenic routes where possible, which was why I was planning on
using it. With that said, they do this brevet at night and I don't
know whether the day-time vs. night-time car traffic patterns differ
greatly.

- You'll need to figure out which BART station you want to use as the
ride start, and how to link that up to the start of the cue sheet.

- You'll need to map your own leg from Davis to Sacramento, but I'm
sure that Google can find you some good ones.

Happy riding,
Lee

[RBW] Re: SH/AHH sizing question

2012-02-28 Thread charlie
I ride a 60cm SimpleOne and have a 86.4cm PBH (okay lets just say
87cm) I once was 5'11"+ but have shrunk an inch due to weight and age.
I also have a shorter reach (short arms) relative to my leg length
(think Welsh potato digger) My 'SO' fits wonderfully with a 9cm stem
and 41cm noodle bars. From what you all are saying a 56cm 'Sam' would
fit similarly or a 59cm 'HH'. I know a 58cm Atlantis is my size since
I am riding a 'LHT' which is fairly similar. Hope this helps give some
reference to the original poster. I think for the most part, going
larger than you think and following Riv's advice is a good way to go.
If you were sure you needed a lower top tube for off road clearance
and the fattest tires you could go smaller but then you would have to
make it up using a longer reach stem/bar combo and a taller seat post.
For road riding sizing larger makes more sense to me.

Re: [RBW] Non-campsite s24o advice

2012-02-28 Thread MSmith
I am not in California, so I don't have any specific info on those places,
but I've always found this to be a situation of "It's easier to receive
forgiveness that permission."

One thing I love about bike camping (as opposed to motorcycle camping, for
example,) is that it is very easy to disappear. No one is going to come
looking for you. Just make sure that you find a spot that can't be seen
from any roads, don't make any fires, and leave no traces and you should be
fine.

I have been "found" a few times, but the squatter bike camper is pretty low
on the "threatening" list and most authorities have let me off with a very
stern "Don't do it anymore." I have never been forced to move.

Good luck-

Re: [RBW] Re: SH/AHH sizing question

2012-02-28 Thread PATRICK MOORE
The SH is "compact" sized in that it has a very long tt for its height
as well as a very high head tube. I found the 56 to be almost too big
and I have had a 60 that was one of the best fitting bikes I've owned.

As Mike said, a given size in the SH can translate to a much larger
size in a more conventionally designed frame.

Re: [RBW] Re: Drop Bar Newbie Qs

2012-02-28 Thread PATRICK MOORE
FWIW, I find the 42 Noodles that I just swapped out for the original
46s (thanks, Dylan) more comfortable than the wider ones. They feel
more natural. And, as I said, the Maes Parallel copies at (I think)
38s flaring to 41 or so, are the bees' knees. (Or is that "bee's
knees"?)

Note that Velo Orange sells the less elegant but substantially the
same Grand Cru Course bar for $50 compared to the GB's $89, and the VO
models come in wider sizes: 42 to 46 versus 37 to 39. (Both VO and GB
bars are slightly flared at the ends.)

Re: [RBW] Re: Who's going to NAHBS?

2012-02-28 Thread Eric Norris
I've ridden and/or driven most of this route. IMHO, it's not terribly scenic,
and it is mostly flat. I would especially urge caution on 160/River
Road--narrow, two-lane road with high speed traffic.

Personally, I would rather take BART to Richmond and then take Amtrak to
Sacramento. That will put you in town just a few blocks from the NAHBS. You'll
have more time to see the show, which will be *much* more interesting than the
rather boring, flat roads of Solano County.

[RBW] Non-campsite s24o advice

2012-02-28 Thread Alex
Hi All,

My girlfriend and I did our first s24o in the Marin headlands
(Haypress campsite) last weekend. We both had a blast, but we're both
used to camping in more wilderness-type settings (i.e., no picnic
tables, no portapotties, no numbered spots for tents) and were hoping
that for our next one we could just camp somewhere by ourselves. I
know from admiring the beautiful photos on the RBW website that this
is possible, but I was hoping to get some advice on how tricky it is.
Is it actually illegal to camp in places like Briones, Shell Ridge,
and Mt. Diablo without being in a designated campsite? I haven't found
anything on their websites saying so. Have people ever been roused by
angry park rangers in the middle of the night? Is there some risk of a
huge fine? I've read Grant's description of bike camping on the
website and I was intrigued by his mention of "stealth" being a
requirement. I just wanted to get a sense of how stealthy you need to
be and what happens if you're not stealthy enough.

bars are at least this wide maybe wide drop bars would smooth the
transition to drop bars." It wasn't until I decided I was going to give
drops an honest try and actually put them on my bike and rode them a little
that I really gave any more thought to what features/sizes I might actually

adopters. I'm delighted to get these pushed out for feedback, and it'll
tickle my dad at the reception. If you have not already emailed me, then I
do not have a set to sell you immediately. But within a couple weeks we
should have more, that will be functionally identical, but hopefully will
not require hand rework by me to get the bolt holes squared away. If you
want me to hold a pair from that batch for you, please contact me off
list. I won't ask any payment until I can commit to a particular date.

If you like a 48cm Noodle I can't imagine your liking any Grand Bois
handlebar. They are all, even the widest, dramatically narrower than
that Noodle.
