[RBW] New Sam Hillborne

2012-05-04 Thread charlie
Just finished taking the newer parts off my old 1980's Raleigh frame
and transferring them to my new Sam Hillborne in order to be able to
ride it before going to bed. My first limited impression is that it is
comfortable and it feels lighter than my Surly Trucker. I like the
handling, it seems very predictable and stable. The green is kind of a
grassy green and I am actually liking its understated looks with no
cream details etc.
My parts went on perfectly and I didn't even have to change cables or
adjust the parts much. I'll post some photos soon with a more detailed
review. Yaay ! Rivendell...nice bike !

[RBW] Re: Was your RIV sizing right on?

2012-05-04 Thread ascpgh
RBW sizing of my Rambouillet was spot-on. They have no choice as a
small builder using Internet and telephone as the primary contact with
buyers but to know their designs, fit and sizing.

Bad sizing can come as easily at your LBS, they don't usually know
every frame they can source for you the way RBW knows about what they
are talking and selling.

The best advice I would offer is to be as straight up about your
actual and intended riding. If you are clear about that and the frame
in which you are interested their advice should set you up. This is no
moment for withholding your inner Walter Mitty and secret dream to
ride the Gavia and Stelvio in record times and you are shopping a
Hunqapillar.

When you got your Riv's, how was their sizing recommendation for you?
You should be as well fit as I was. I have been getting unsolicited
compliments on how well this bike fits me for years

2012-05-04 Thread EricP
Not just you. My Paul Neo Retros cause fork shudder on my Surly Cross
Check. It's one reason I didn't swap those brakes over to the SimpleOne.
Although may still swap at a later date.

The 720s are fairly good brakes, but they do take some time to set up. Or
at least that's how I feel about it now after using V brakes on a number of
builds. Even last night was raising the straddle cable on the back of
the SImpleOne to get the 720s to work a touch better. Was only able to do
that because swapped the rear rack to a Nitto R-14 and there was more room
between the stays.

somewhat finicky to dial in. Maybe it's my amateur mechanic skills,
but it's very easy to lockup and skid the rear and the front is so
powerful that it flexes the headset hanger and fork to the point that
the front wheel shudders under hard braking.

2012-05-04 Thread Michael Hechmer
I'm always surprised by posts from people that have difficulty setting up
Pau's brakes or have difficulty with modulation.

I too had the Shimano 550s and found that they were very difficult to set
up with Shimano levers (better with Cane Creek) and even with salmon pads
offered mediocre braking. I switched to Neos. Set up, the first time was
tricky, because it was so different from any other brake I had ever used. (
A youtube video would be helpful.) I put them on my Ebisu All Purpose and
they have been terrific. I now can move them and set them up very quickly,
get great power, great modulation, no shutter or squeal. Since then I have
put Racers on the tandem and Racer Ms on the Rambouillet. If I were having
the kind of problems so people report, I would contact Paul's; I'm sure
they would want to help

[RBW] Re: Weight of Hunqapillar frame?

2012-05-04 Thread RJM
Do you think they will be riding Rivs over?

I don't want a bike to have unnecessary weight, but also don't buy frames
and parts based on light weight. It certainly is a criteria to look at when
purchasing bike parts, but higher on the list in my opinion is strength and
how long the part is going to last. I bought a Phil bottom bracket for
my Hillborne not because of weight (I think it probably weighs more than
the original) but because I want it to last 10 years and be serviceable
when it does go kaput. Same kind of thing when I buy wheels, saddles, and
handlebars.

I would kind of like to know the difference in weight between a Sam
Hillborne and a Roadeo frame in my size just because weight may be higher
on the list of importance with a bike like the Roadeo. Just to satisfy
curiosity, which is what looking at weight numbers really is for me.

My Sam nearly weighs double what my friends Madone weighs which you can
really tell when lifting the bikes onto a car rack, but I keep up with her
and usually lead when we ride together.

be a solid 4-5 days of Riv-ish bike fun. And you're invited!

 Here's some detail.

 Thursday, May 31.

I believe the book-signing is scheduled for 6-7:30 PM. I'm going to
provide grilled sausages/burgers and/or pulled pork and fancy beer and
probably have potluck for the rest. I'm aiming to feed 50 mouths, but maybe
100, who knows! Come by the shop starting around 4-5 pm, and be hungry and
ready to talk bikes and look at bikes and ride around on bikes.

By pure coincidence, local bike company Salsa Cycles is sponsoring a
film at nearby Riverview Theater the same evening.
 http://revealthepath.com/
I would have hated to miss this, but there is a 9pm showing for the
film. We can do the book signing thing with Grant, then anybody who's
interested can ride over to the theater (which is an old-timey neighborhood
movie theater, not a modern shopping mall cineplex). If past experience is
an indicator, attending bike films at the Riverview with several hundred
Minneapolis bike nuts and bike industry types will be really, really fun.
Seriously, this is going to be a spectacular evening for bike people.

 Friday, June 1:
I'll be leaving in the morning to ride down to Red Wing to meet and
greet out-of-towners who are joining the Midwest Riv Rally. You can ride
down with me if you want to. The ride to Red Wing is about 65 miles. This
meet-and-greet will be an informal sort of thing, but I imagine we'll ride
around, eat, drink, be merry, and then scatter off to our respective
accommodations. The natural focal point for meeting up in Red Wing will be
Bay Point Park. Again, this part is highly unofficial and not at all
choreographed. Go to the park, and look for people on nice bikes, and then
hang out with them. I'm planning to roll in around 3-4 PM, but that really
depends on who rides with me and how fast we go.

 Saturday, June 2:
Meet at Bay Point Park around 8 am. We'll try to ride out around 9 am
down the Wisconsin side of Lake Pepin. Expect 50-60 glorious low-traffic
miles of mixed terrain, some hills, some gravel, some pavement, perhaps a
modest water crossing (or three). There are cafes and pie shops along the
route so we don't need to pack much food. Do not ask me how fast the ride
will be, please. I simply don't know, and don't care. It's my opinion that
the group should stick together. The fast guys and gals can wait for us
slowpokes at the tops of hills and at intersections. Everybody should feel
free to stop to snap photos, take a breather, slow down, walk up the hills,
etc. I don't plan to provide maps or cue sheets for various reasons, but
mostly so we don't get too focused on the route and so that the fast people
don't turn it into a race. When we get to Wabasha, I'll have camping
arranged, but there's at least one hotel there for those who don't care to
camp. You're on your own for hotel reservations. At this time, I don't plan
to have any support vehicle, so you'll have to carry your own gear or
convince someone else to carry it for you. Maybe one of you has a spouse or
friend or relative who'd like to be involved but who doesn't want to ride a
bike? If so, maybe you could volunteer that person to provide a support
vehicle? But my default is no support vehicle, just so we're all prepared.
To be clear, my default is no support of any kind. Just a friendly ride,
and if something bad happens, we'll figure out how best to handle it.

Sunday, June 3: Much like the previous day, except in Minnesota. We'll
roll out of Wabasha around 9 am and follow a mixed terrain route, mostly
paved, but some gravel, some hills, somewhat more

[RBW] Question regarding listing my Hunq on eBay

2012-05-04 Thread climbthemtns
Just curious what the group thinks?
I've got a decked out Hunq (51 cm) I listed here awhile back and
currently listed on CL that I need to sell within the month.
Anyone here have experience selling their Riv bikes on eBay.
Should I list there or try waiting for the right person to come along

I am in the overlap zone for the 58 61 cm Atlantis. Riv suggested I
go with the 61 but I'd never even ridden a bike that size so I opted

Re: [RBW] Question regarding listing my Hunq on eBay

2012-05-04 Thread Peter Morgano
I would avoid ebay unless your are desperate, between ebay and paypal fees
be pepared to lose about 15-20% of total cost in fees. I know for the
smaller sellers this is negligible but when you are in the 1k range it gets
to be alot. And not to be a downer here but mint condition used is still
about half price of brand new. I have bought and sold Hilsens on here for
a few months for around the 1k range which seems fair but again is half off
of what they cost new at RB. CL is for bottom feeders I find, I have only
ever sold beaters there as most people want to haggle down the cost of 2k
bike to 300 bucks and are pretty dickish about it too. Try putting it back
on the list with some nice pics, clear description and a resonable price
and I bet you will get some bites. Just my 2 cents.

If I was trying to sell my Sam I would spend all my time and energy using
this list.

I would take fantastic photos, list the complete components, and ask a fair
price.

Ebay will kill you on fees. I would put it on Craigslist and put all the
other rivendell models names in the listing as keywords so that people that
search all craigslist would find it if they were looking for Rivs.

[RBW] Re: Question regarding listing my Hunq on eBay

2012-05-04 Thread Zack
yep, just saw your listing on CL as I was looking for a quickbeam, you
should definitely sell the large saddlebag, the nitto racks, and maybe the
fenders separately, you'd be able to sell those within the hour here (or at
least close to it).

Then you can bring the price of the complete bike down accordingly.

And I would probably start by dropping the price to what you would be
netting if you sold through ebay (subtract about 15% off the top of the
price). If you need to make a quick sale, you have to drop the price until
someone takes it.

Good luck with the sale, must be a bummer to let that Hunq go!

So i sold my QB frame a while back and still have the cranks. I'm
thinking of maybe putting them on my Hilsen later this summer when I

even keep the same BB, all of which makes for a fairly easy swap.

On my Coho randonneur I'm running a Campy 50-40-28 with an 11-30 cassette.
I can use the 40 for most all riding except steep hills.
I've thought about switching it our for something like a 44-29 on a 94 bcd
crankset. I think I'd probably use the 29 more than now as pushing that 44
up gradual climbs would put me in one of the larger cogs. It's a simple
thing to try. If it doesn't work you can always go back.
