I don't think the XD cranks are made in Japan any longer. From what I
hear, Sugino now produces most of their budget products in China. That
doesn't detract from the fact that for a lot of riders, the XD cranks
represent a decent choice, as long as you aren't sensitive to tread (Q

Maybe try using the rack/support, but don't attach the little strap that goes
on the seatpost? (I'm not too familiar with the bag in question, but I assume
it has a seatpost connection). The rack and the two saddle loop connections
should provide s stable fit, but allowing the bag angle to match up to the rack
will improve capacity.

like using 94 bcd cranks for the range of chainrings. Unfortunately they

Re: [RBW] Re: Not as pretty as the new Herse cranks, but ...

2012-06-11 Thread PATRICK MOORE
I'd be interested if anyone has successfully used a IRD triple with a
wide-stayed Riv or otherwise, and what bb and how was the chainline? I
expect that with a sufficiently wide bb spindle the rings would sit
considerably further out than those of the XD2 or whatever it is on a
107 or 113. But if you could center the middle on a wide stay'ed bike,
I'd be interested in it for the Fargo, using the middle and inner
positions as a wide range double (well, something like 38/24). As it
is, the X2D works fine with the outer sorta inward-biased so that I
can use it with more of the cogs as the main ring; the 36 is for
climbing and the 24 is for hypotheticals.

As for someone's comment that the X2D is a lot cheaper even than the
IRD, well, so it is, but it's not as nice looking, for one thing, and
the IRD is a nice middle term between the XD2 and the Herse, no? That
said, the X2D is a decent enough crank, and since I use the 46 for
most by far of my riding, chainring wear is a minor issue. And
chainrings are relatively cheap in 110.

Moving along: don't y'all think riding with loads up hills, pedaling
low cadence, hi-torque, is great fun? Or perhaps I'm an outlier, but I
swear I like pushing the Fargo up an incline with 30 lb as much as I
like spinning the gofast on the flats. Well, pushing the gofast up a
hill is even more fun. Just got back from a grocery run.

Moving further: Silver bar end shifters: wonderful, the best I've used
and I've used many. My 7 speeders are built with 9 speed spacers (with
2 between big cog and flange) and yet they shift them very well.
Occasionally there will be slippage, but that is due to the Hyperglide
teeth catching the chain very slightly off center; the long Silver
arms allow you easily to push a very small adjustment in the rear
derailleur's position.

[RBW] Portland Riv-ish Ride

2012-06-11 Thread Allan in Portland
Perusing the Pedalpalooza Calendar, looks like the Petersen-Style-Ride is
this Sunday.

http://www.shift2bikes.org/cal/viewpp2012.php#17-2994
*Equal parts Petersen-style Ride and Petersen Style-ride. Bring your
lugged-steel, tweed, leather, and shellac... a rolling bike show with
plenty of interesting discussion. Good natured curmudgeons gladly suffered.
Grouchy know-it-alls dropped. 5 years running and still no lycra.*

Not mentioned in the ad copy, there's typically an off-road bit or two.
Nothing serious, but enough to make a useful low-pass filter in case any
hipsters show up with tires skinnier than their jeans. For whatever reason,
last year really had 'em out, causing the ride to detour along a stretch of
active rail bed. A few years before that, it was the I-5 bridge across the
Columbia. Half the fun is coming out to see whatever route the crazy ride
leader has in store.

Regards,
-Allan

[RBW] Re: Newbie here, and to RBW

2012-06-11 Thread Joe Bernard
It'll be interesting to hear your thoughts on friction shifting with
power-ratchet shifters..I presume you've been shifting index on your Volpe.
I thought I would never adapt to friction, but kind of stumbled into it
when I bought a couple of bikes with the old Suntour shifters (bar-ends on
one, thumbies on another). I figured I would deal with it because that's
what they came with, but would prefer indexing if given the choice.

Until I bought a couple more bikes with clicks. Nope. Now the loud, clunky
index shift drives me crazy. I love the silent, smooth action of power
ratchets, and find it just about impossible to miss a shift.

[RBW] seized bottom bracket cup

2012-06-11 Thread MobileBill
Hey
I think I've heard all the tricks for removing, and will problably be
seeking an appropriately long pipe tomorrow, but I'd like your thoughts: Is
it likely that I could damage the frame of my Saluki or the bottom
bracket threads just by applying more leverage in an attempt to free the
seized drive side cup? I hear the carbon and aluminum guys fretting about
such things, but what are the chances with steel? If threads get stripped
in the process, can they be re-chased in a reliable way?
THe left side came off easily, but the drive side has proved tougher. I
doubt soaking in oil will help, since the threads were only recently
greased. It appears that the drive side really got torqued up a few weeks
ago by a mechanic, who was hoping to take some play out of the cranks. But
it seems the play REALLY was a faulty or failing cartridge, so now I need
to remove and replace. Damn. I'm ready to get back on this bike, but don't
want to mess it up.

[RBW] Rivs meet in the wild

2012-06-11 Thread Steven Silbert
Today I came back to my Hillborne, which was parked in front of Linnea's
Cafe in San Luis Obispo, only to find that it had found a friend! A
beautiful Atlantis was parked next to Samwise (My Hillborne)... The light
blue contrasted with the creamy green was a sight to behold. The owner was
waiting for me to arrive so he could meet the owner. I drooled over his
Phil Wood built, 40-spoke wheels while he checked out the double top tubes.
This whole experience leaves me wondering... does this happen with other
bicycle companies? Is it OK for me to get so excited meeting another
Rivendell in the wild? I mean it happens with surlys and other companies,
but not quite to the same degree.. We talked for like 30 minutes about how
much we liked our bikes. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it feels
nice belonging to such a cool, tight-knit community of people.

with but was laid off (this was a a while ago, everything is fine now!) and
never ended up needing it. I am looking to trade for a Sackville Barsack

with, let me know and we can work a deal to everyone's satisfaction.

[RBW] German mirror, down low and sideways - and a taste of the dark side on my QuickBeam

2012-06-11 Thread BSWP
I found a very nice way to mount the lightweight German mirror on the
quickbeam. I put on the bottom edge of the Wald basket, placed it so the
mirror face is horizontal - to give a wide view to the sides. It's just
perfect for riding in traffic. I have it angled so the horizon runs across
the middle of the mirror, and angled out just far enough so I get a clear
view straight behind, on the right edge of the mirror, and well to the
side, over on the left. I can see cars to to my left without having to
crane my head over that way. I used a plastic win cork, cut in half, to
give the mirror cinch strap something to grab.

And on Saturday, I picked up a sweet sexy bit of temptation - a DOS ENO
freewheel for the QuickBeam. I have been riding a 16-tooth fixed cog since
I got the bike last fall, and experimented with a 38 front ring, but now
back to 40. I initially ordered a 16/19, but on the ride over to RBW on
Saturday, pushing up St. Stephen's trail out of Orinda on the 40/16, I
decided I should go with the 17/19, since I'm keeping the 16 fixed cog on
the other side of the wheel. The Saturday crew at Riv was helpful and
friendly as always.

Wow, the bike is just as much fun with a freewheel as it is with a fixed
cog, and my legs are wondering what the heck's going on with this
coasting business.

Not quite a direct hit, but for your consideration:

I have one of the Sackville predecessor Baggins Boxy bags in khaki
waxed cotton with the F-15 Nitto rack I'd be willing to trade. Some
pictures of the actual bag here:

[RBW] Pics of Grand Bois on Facebook page

2012-06-11 Thread Joe Bartoe

Hi All-

I just installed a new set of Grand Bois Cerf Green Labels onto my Hed Jet 4
rims. They measure a bit larger than 29c wide on these wheels (23.4-millimeter
rim). They even puff up a bit more in the next few days. They ride really well
and are fast. I rode them on the double century circuit here in California last
year and loved the added comfort and the secret added speed. I find these to be
faster for me than just about any other tire I've tried, including the
Challenge Parigi-Roubaix.

[RBW] Re: Rivs meet in the wild

2012-06-11 Thread Bill
I rode past a Quickbeam a couple of months ago while I was out on my Sam
here in Columbus, Ohio (Whetstone Park bike path). I was in a hurry to be
somewhere and did not have time to chat. That was the only RivBike
encounter I've had in almost two years. Next time I'll stop. Yes, my
first thought was hey, there's someone else who gets it.

This whole experience leaves me wondering... does this happen with other
bicycle companies? Is it OK for me to get so excited meeting another
Rivendell in the wild? I mean it happens with surlys and other companies,

much we liked our bikes. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it feels
nice belonging to such a cool, tight-knit community of people.

[RBW] Rivendell Rally Bay Area Edition Ride Recap

2012-06-11 Thread Manuel Acosta

 Fun day.
Grant's book signing at the Warming Hut was greeted by amazing weather and
amazing bikes with amazing people. Glad I got to drag Grant along on this
trip. It's kinda hard to plan a ride like this for people I don't know. So
I figured I would just do a ride and if people wanted to follow that would
be great. I already knew I didn't want to ride Tam that day. Despite the
nice weather along the coast I knew riding more inland it would get
uncomfortable or even down right miserable. At any point no ride should be
like that. Unless you want it to be. And for this nice day with these great
people it didn't seem like it was really necessary to go on a epic river
crossing ride. (not like there is any epic river crossing around San
Francisco) or dry dirt hill climbing. Opt for a tourist route of seeing the
best of San Francisco. Riding over the bridgeinto Marin Headlands By some
beachUp some hill with bunkers back over the bridge. Most of the route
was kinda made up on the spot. Thanks for everyone that followed me (err
dealt with my lack of route making skills). After we got over the bridge
some people branched off to do their own thing including Grant himself.
Kinda made me nervous about him getting back to Bart when he asked the
question, I can get to Bart by going this way right? I'm pretty sure he
made it to Bart. The ride continued passed the bridge pass Robin William's
house pass the Legion of Honor down some stairs pass Ocean's Beach
into Golden Gate Park. Here the ride finished with Ice cream in the park.
Fun ride amazing people, great looking day. Thanks to everyone that came
out. Oh yea thanks to Grant for make a book about bike riding, then having
a book signing for the book about bike riding, then coming along for the
bike ride after the book signing for his book about bike riding.

[RBW] Re: Rivs meet in the wild

2012-06-11 Thread Tim

Yes, it is a great experience. I was on a 72 mile group ride a couple
of weeks ago. I had been riding with a few other riders at a nice,
quick clip (with my Homer amongst all the crabon fiber), when a fast
pace line came by and the other riders jumped in with them. It was a
bit too fast for me so I dropped off, rather than blow up and bonk.
Anyway, after a few miles I saw a Carradice bag on the bike I was
about to pass. Then I saw the cream longboards and I pulled up next to
a Bleriot! I commented to the owner, and he to me. He had never seen a
Homer in person, nor had I seen a Bleriot. We rode together and
chatted about our bikes and Rivs in general. He has a Ramboulliet and
an Atlantis and maybe one other Riv besides the Bleriot. Anyway, you
are right about the kinship we feel with one another. I just don't see
how folks with plastic bikes could have the same feeling.

I'm also open to trade for crank set in 165mm. Preferably the same Sugino
