[RBW] Re: A miles only cyclecomputer??
Had one years ago..in the 70's. Took off my electronic speedo a few years ago and don't miss it. The thing is, on your normal routes, you already know the distance and a stop watch, pencil and paper will tell you your mph . My average mph hasn't changed in ten years it goes up as I get in shape at the end of the season but not by much. Top speed, a ridiculous 49 mph down a hill..I* *probably have gone faster since but don't want to know and I try to avoid it. Top cruising speed on flat ground somewhere in the high 20's. I'm getting older and have less time to ride my speed isn't going up and my distances don't matter either. The only thing I look at is how long have I been ridingits easy to estimate mileage over varied terrain and its usually in the area of 12-15 per hour for me. Maps are better however. I just look at where I left from and where I end up then look at my watch and measure the distance on the map then its paper and pencil time if I just have to know how fast I covered the distance. Usually I am too lazy to figure it out and soon forget about it. The older I get the less concerned I am even about how far I have ridden I just want to ride. For maintenance purposes I go more by months or hours on the bike by estimation but lately I just lube my chain, pump the tires, give the bike the once over and ride. Its a mindset that takes a while to develop.old habits die hard. On Saturday, October 27, 2012 9:56:22 PM UTC-7, Michael wrote: Any such animal? I lost my cyclecomputer. [RBW] 650b Ram with Hetres, update 1
I mounted the Hetre tires on Synergy 650b wheels and swapped out the calipers to Tektro R559. In the front there is gobs of room--over a cm on all sides. In the back there is sufficient room with plenty of room up top, and the minimum clearance is in the chainstays with about 4 mm at minimum on each side. There should be plenty of room for fenders, as Jay described, which is great. The bad news is that the R559 caliper on the rear right side does not have enough reach. Maybe 1 or 2 mm would do it. In order to take a test ride, I'm flipping the brake pad in the reverse direction. I don't know how much of a difference the pad will make if it's upside down, but in that configuration the brake won't hit the tire. The Tektro brakes have 73 mm reach, and in theory, there are 75 mm reach brakes, which should hopefully work. I've kind of searched around the web and found some IRD B75 calipers, but they only seem to be available in black right now for the rear. I prefer silver, but... I also saw some DiaCompe centerpulls. I've never used centerpulls, but I could switch to those, since they also claim to have 75mm reach. I would appreciate any experience with the centerpull brakes in contrast to the dual-pivot calipers. If there are other 75 mm reach brakes I should consider, then it would be much appreciated too (I see BMX-style brakes, but have no idea about how they would work on a road bike). Toshi: if you don't mind a hack, try a small rattail file in the pad slots. I've added a couple of mm to old single pivot sidepulls that way. [RBW] FS 56cm Homer Hilsen Frame/Fork
Hello all! I had my Rivendell frame up for sale this summer but there were no takers so I have reduced the price a fair bit. It is a 56cm A. Homer Hilsen frame, fork, and Tange Levin alloy njs headset. It is a Toyo frame that was purchased from Rivendell last fall. I am the only owner. I didn't like the original color and sent it off to Tom Kellogg for a repaint. The color is a dark olive green and creamy head tube with a clear coat to finish up. It's solid color with that slightly wet look and No pearl or Metallic. I really like it and think he did a fantastic job. I didn't bother with replacing the decals but if you want them I think you can get them from Riv. The head badge is, of course, sitting proudly on the head tube. The frame was only ridden from February to May, mostly commuting to work and a handful of forty or fifty mile rides thrown in for good measure. It has a couple of scratches from normal use and a tiny ding in one spot which I have tried to show in the pics. I have used frame saver on the insides and all in all I would consider it to be in great condition. I am in Manhattan and if anyone is interested and wants to they are welcome to come by and check it out. If you can get here that is... Obviously it is still a bit crazy in the city but I think I could have the bike boxed and shipped by the middle of the week. I am asking $1050 but would like the buyer to pay for shipping. I will pack it up nice and bring it to Fed Ex or UPS. My bike box is at work right now and there is a giant crumpled crane blocking my path so I can't figure out the box dimensions till I can get into work and get a quote from one of the shipping companies. Its a riv bike box if anyone knows the actual dimensions and wants to figure shipping costs. Mike P.S. I don't post very often so when I do it still takes time to go through and I seem to get lost in the shuffle here and there but I will do my best to answer any questions. Re: [RBW] Maxy Fasty experience please.
I rode them for about 2,300 miles on a 650B conversion and liked them quite well overall. Not as cushy as Pari-Moto or Hetres, but tough and reliable over coarse chipseal. Enough air in them to ease those nasties. I definitely prefer them to the Nifty-Swifty, which is more durable but less compliant. The ride very similarly to the G.B. Cypres in my experience, but are a bit more rugged. On Fri, Nov 2, 2012 at 11:57 AM, Palmer volvotom1...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all, I am considering some Maxy Fastys for a 650b conversion. I have Maxty Fasty's on my wife's 1950 Claud Butler Mixte that I converted to 650b (the mixte was originally designed for 26 x 1 1/4 wheels). I actually ride the bike more than my wife does. She rides SS, while I ride fixed gear. The Maxty Fastys feel great - light, cushy, and speedy. Yes, there're not as cushy as the Hetres, but they eat up Chicago potholes just as good. Re: [RBW] 650b Ram with Hetres, update 1
Toshi, 2 thoughts. First, Hiroshi at Jitensha years ago filed 1-2mm on a brake slot on one of my bikes. So I think that's fine. But, if you're unsure, some Mafacs had a vertical (oblong) slot instead of a circular mounting hole in the yoke, which would give you another 3-4mm. I have one of these on a 2000 brakeset i'm not using. If you want, I can measure the reach for you and see if it's long enough. Re: [RBW] 650b Ram with Hetres, update 1
Toshi, Another trick I have employed to extend the brake reach is to use mountain or v-brake style brake shoes/pads instead of road pads. The pivots on the mountain pads are thinner and the pads can sit lower on the slot--may just be enough to reach the rim. The front is a cheapie pre-fab dynamo wheel I already bought. I'll see what happens as far as rim availability when the frame arrives and I get the other bits all ready to go. As far as building your own wheels... It can be rewarding. My advice would be that the first step be for you to read The Bicycle Wheel by Jobst Brandt.http://www.amazon.com/Bicycle-Wheel-3rd-Jobst-Brandt/dp/0960723668 If after reading (or skimming) the book you'll know if you want to press forward to build your own wheels. I've built up maybe a dozen wheel sets over the last 20 years and refer to the words of Jobst every time. In addition to all sorts of wheel theory info, the book has step by step wheel building instructions with great hand drawn illustrations. I don't have a tension gauge so I reference an existing similarly configured wheel for tension. I've had 1 wheel come loose -- about a month into riding the wheel I noticed the rear felt odd. All the spokes/nipples had worked loose. I rode home, tightened it up and haven't had any issues in 2 years. On another occasion I was truing an existing wheel (non-eyelett rim) and I overtightened and pulled the nipple through the rim... oops. My point being that there is some risk but also great satisfaction riding wheels you built yourself. --Andy On Wednesday, October 31, 2012 12:48:21 PM UTC-7, stee...@gmail.com wrote: Have a pair of Phil Wood 'Rivy' 36h hubs I intend to build up during the winter months for my Rambouillet, but am undecided on what rims to go with. A while back, Grant posted an insightful piece regarding the precarious balance of rim development (i.e., 'Light, Strong, and Inexpensive: Pick Two'). He then mentioned rolling out a new ‘Stouty’ rim of which I've been pestering Rick for an ETA for nearly a year now, but he confessed they were waiting as well. Complete speculation on my part, but I presume the delay may have something to do with Velocity moving it's production from Australia to Florida. Given this, I may just go ahead and choose from the current offering of rims (such as the ones below), but wanted to first touch base with this group to gather firsthand builder/rider experiences or possibly learn of other options. I'm also curious of any considerations pertaining to tire mounting/seating issues. Incidentally, I will be running 32 mm tires (Jack Brown Green’s, most likely).
