I use it under a helmet, and like it. It's nice and warm down to a

it's pretty tight under the helmet.

The kiddie beanie replaced a purple/gray striped wool beanie, also

[RBW] Riding in Marin

2012-12-25 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Today I rode Miwok, Bobcat, Marincello, Tennessee Valley, and Old Springs
Trails in the Marin Headlands. I also detoured to Haypress campground, but
given the sogginess after the all-day rain, I opted to go over the big hill
back to the warmth and excellent coffee of the Marin Headlands Hostel. I'm glad
I did, because the climb up the stair-stepped Old Spring Trail and the Miwok
hillside descent were incredible.

The bike I'm riding is a Surly Disc Trucker with hydraulic disc brakes and
Rohloff. It has some non-Rivish attributes, of course, but it's steel and
traditional geometry and has ample clearance for my 26x2.0 Schwalbe Mondials
and fenders. Anyway, after coming down the long descent of the Marincello
trail, which is basically a narrow, fairly smooth gravel road, not single
track, I took shelter from the downpour under a big tree. A couple minutes
later a man and a woman on full-suspension MTBs came down the same trail. They
carried on for several minutes in the parking lot, punctuated by hoots and
hollers and repetitive use of a new word for me crazeballs, about how
intense their descent had been. Grant has written about how extreme equipment
tends to make mundane experiences seem more extreme - like the high adventure
of driving a Land Rover to pick up the groceries. I thought the Marincello
descent was fun and beautiful, but never for a second did I feel that I was
having an extreme experience or pushing the limits of my old-fashioned,
unsuspended steel bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: Grips on Albatross bars.

2012-12-25 Thread Robert Barr
My daughters are in bed after a long Christmas day. Now I can reply. I have
Riv cork on three bikes, a Hunqapillar, and two Bridgestone MB3s. The Hunqa
has standard cork as does my wife's MB3. My MB3 has BES, and twined notched
cork. Like you I shellac the cork, I have learned to not lightly disregard
Riv advice, it comes from experience and always saves me frustration. They
write to shellac the cork or it gets gray and dingy. It did - I washed it
up (as another poster wrote - it washes easily), put on shellac and have
had no more problems. The cork on my MB3 has been on the longest - over
four years. It has weathered to a dark golden brown that to my eye is
beautiful. I can't bring myself to tape the curves on the Alba bars. How
about you - what are those Bosco's attached to? Bob (Indianapolis)

On Mon, Dec 24, 2012 at 3:47 PM, EGNolan egno...@gmail.com wrote:

does get a lot of compliments, some folks thinking it's wood, others
wondering just what the he'll it is and some folks just admiring. I will
say the solid cork from Rivendell seems to hold up better than the scrap
cork and glue of other brands. They age very beautifully too.

day. I know putting the album together and then starting this thread made
me smile and even laugh a little to myself.

Regards,
-Allan
