RE: [RBW] Starting off the New Years Right!
Wonderful chronicle of the ride, Manny. It was 25 degrees here in Delaware - not quite so much fun, by the looks of your pictures. As always, they're descriptive and creative. Thanks. From: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com [mailto:rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Manuel Acosta Sent: Thursday, January 03, 2013 9:06 PM To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] Starting off the New Years Right! Ride happened. Good weather, good folks. I'll start with some of my highlights. Getting to the start of the ride I'm greeted by Rivendell folks and Grizzle Peak Cyclists. Apparently GPC does an yearly ride up Diablo for NYE. It was funny because I imagined chaos when our two groups interacted with each other. Like two rival gangs meeting at a hangout to have an old school brawl that involved steel and twine vs carbon and lycra. Sadly the truth was much more civil then you realized. We all exchanged New Year greetings as we tried to figure out who was the ride leader for our group. Despite designing a route for the ride I had no intentions on following it if Joe was going to lead the way to Green Ranch and Joe wasn't there. So we figured we would just ride to Joe's house and see what happens. We meet Joe along the way and he maps out a direction he was planning on going and if anyone else wanted to follow him they can join in on the fun. We headed towards the top of the mountain in a sea of cyclist making their way on the road. We continued onto Green Ranch to check out the old pool and chimney. We took pictures, Dustin shared his salami and I share my prosciutto -provolone wrap and we took off riding some gnarly, rutted, rocky descent near Frog pond. We found ourselves at a trail marker that said end of trail. Lost, we had Sean be the ginny pig to check up ahead if the trail really did end. It did, Sean rode back. Dav shared some of his Fig-Newtons and we had more salami from Dustin. Our climb out of valley turned more into a hike when the mud started sticking and fenders needed to get unstuck. Finally back on the road we made our way to some food. We didn't have tacos like those PDX guys we had sandwiches instead. It was cool to note that just about everyone on the ride was someone that I've ridden before on a separate ride. It was interesting how everyone reacted when all clumped together on a ride also it was great how everyone stuck together and were in good spirits despite not really knowing where we were going. Huge thanks to Joe for leading the way toward new trails. Adventure is good when you have company that are willing to get lost for a bit. I've found a happy place with a mix of French fit and Country Bike fit. I now ride a 60, could probably ride a 62 but that might be too much of a French fit. [RBW] Quickbeam Bar Swap
Pictures to follow, but one of the things I ordered to meet the $300 contest threshold was a set of Bullmoose Boscos, so they are going on the Quickbeam tomorrow. I've had Albatross and now Gen1 Bullmoose up front, and both are great bars, so this will give me a chance to compare and contrast them all. I have a set of Noodles on a Dirt Drop stem on the Bombadil at the moment, but I really liked the Gen1 Bullmoose version on that fame, so they may end up returning. Winter in Chicago is so far so good, so if I'm lucky I'll get out for a ride tomorrow to try them out. Hope all your weekend projects are fun ones too. Re: [RBW] Re: Cygolite Metro Review
Sorry to steal your Cygolite thread. One thing to consider with many of the bright lights nowadays is that the beams are symmetric, so they act like a car's high beam and have the potential to blind pedestrians and drivers. The Europeans have a strict standard and make asymmetric beams. The second benefit of the asymmetric beam is that all the light is being directed to the road and not lighting the trees above you, so your lumens count for more. Some people complain that they can't see road signs as well with the asymmetric beams. I carry a helmet light and use that when I need to illuminate above the road more effectively. The 80-lux Phillips saferide LED headlamp is probably the best battery light out there that is asymmetric in my experience. Another solid choice is the BM Ixon IQ. You might be able to get them for under $100 if you order direct from Europe. There are a bunch of asymmetric lights that put out a lot of light. In terms of price for output, perhaps the Magicshine worked best in my experience, but battery quality is a concern. The Magicshine was a good choice for me because on the higher settings, it can light up both lanes and I can turn safely with good visibility. I couldn't say that with the IQ Cyo, which only lights up about 1 lane and on twisty curves, the light is off the side of the road. The Cygolite is a good price and looks quite solid. As an alternative, you could consider mounting a flashlight on a Twofish lockblock. That is my backup light. The most accessible is a AA light that works great with NiMH rechargeables. The Fenix LD20 uses 2 AA lights and works great. My main backup light is the Fenix PD32 light with rechargeable 18650 batteries. It's a bit of an investment because you need to buy the light $70 plus get rechargable lithiums + charger which will run another $70 or so for a quality unit and good batteries (Pila+ Panasonic). The form factor is slightly longer and fatter than a AA battery, but because it's lithium it cranks out an amazing amount of light. I recommend candlepowerforums for the light nut and good research. [RBW] Re: Anyone know how many people were in the raffle?
I was at Rivendell a few days ago, and the general feeling there seemed to be that the raffle stirred up a nice amount of business. Of course, that was just an impression I got from talking to the people there, not hard data. I sincerely hope the raffle had the desired effect for Riv. In any case, often when businesses do a promotion, like a raffle, sale, coupons, etc, the sales generated by the promotion can sometimes negatively affect sales in the near-future. Since this is a slow time of year for most bike-related businesses, and lots of big bills come due at the end/beginning of the year, I'd urge you all to buy something from Riv or your LBS or other small businesses that you like. Came on a used Della Santa acquired by a friend, given to me as a finder's fee. I rode it briefly before discovering I don't like the shape. The Turbo logo on the nose is worn but otherwise in good shape, maybe a little faded. $50 shipped. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Anyone know how many people were in the raffle?
I wasn't able to enter, so that's a minus one to the total... :) :) :) Seriously, it's so cool we had a popular winner (not that there could be an unpopular winner), and the excitement of dreaming what we might order if we won was great. [RBW] FS: Platrack Slickersack combo + Tektro 720 Canti Brakes
Ideas are churning, so these are now up for grabs. The Platrack and Slickersack (Gen 1 Grid Grey) are unused, but have been mounted on an off each of my bikes once or twice. The rack has a short set of struts that fit the Bombadil middle eyelets, and a new pair of long struts I bought to have on hand in case I wanted to reach the dropouts. The Tektros are complete and unused, but I prefer Paul, so no need for these. Platrack Combo: $175 shipped Platrack alone: $90 + $10 shipping Slickersack alone: $80 + $10 shipping Tektros: $30 shipped All three items above: $200 shipped US 48 shipping only, or pick up in Chicago. Call the driver's insurance agent and they will tell you how to proceed. When I was hit, their agent said that a cyclist is a pedestrian. And that means it is the driver's fault automatically (according to what the agent told me). It worked out that way. I've experienced a shimmy at times with my 56 Atlantis, and I'm sure the headset is aged at this point. Probably too much to hope for that it will also quiet the front-wheel dive at low speeds going uphill with a front load (which was much better on second tour with less weight placed lower in the front), but i'm still wanting to try it out. This topic has been discussed ad nauseum, with the suggestion that a roller bearing headset MAY increase the friction enough to damp out shimmy. Since my problem was limited to certain load conditions (heavy rear little to no front load) that were easily adjusted (more weight up front), it was not a Red Alert. I always thought it would be a nice thing to try but never put much effort into finding one for the Atlantis. With Rivendell now handling the IRD and Grant specifically mentioning the goodness of a bit of extra stickiness, I had to give it a try. The original Ultegra was nearing 10 years old way past 40,000 miles, so it had earned it's keep. In fact, it was still smooth I wouldn't have been thinking about it absent the shimmy. After a few hundred miles a variety of loading experiments, I'm pleased to report a complete absence of shimmy. Even with 15 lbs in each rear bag, shoved as far back as possible on a Nitto big back rack, and nothing, not even my trusty Acorn, on the front, the bike is rock while sitting up-right, coasting a 20 MPH downhill. Previously, a load this squirrely would get things rocking about 12-14 MPH and be overly exciting by 18. All that drama is gone. For anyone who's got a recurring problem on this issue, give one of the IRD headsets a shot. It's a relatively quick, simple experiment and the headset looks quite nice as well. The bike otherwise handles the same so there is no downside. dougP -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Slow Riding
I was riding my S1 home through Golden Gate Park in SF two days ago, on the downhill headed for the beach, and was passed like I was standing still by a woman who must have been 65 years old at least. I won't say that I didn't feel some slight shame/embarassment but I didn't feel like speeding up-or riding a different bike. Since getting my Hilborne, I'm content to chug along in my plain clothes at 13-15 mph, stop at the library, ride to work etc... I feel no motivation or ambition to perform on a bike. Maybe it would be different if I lived in a warmer climate and purchased a Tarmac? Anybody else feel me on this?
