Looks like a basic nice bike. Not sure I would pay for a Joe Bell paint job
and have it be flat black, but to each his own.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hupe or Fender for saddlebag support (if it rides too low)?

2013-03-16 Thread Robert Barr
Keith,

I bought a Wire Guard for the same reason you list. There was the potential
for some cable rub on the small Saddlesack that I use on my Hunq. A top
rack seemed overkill, and the Hupe didn't look like it would fit a small
Saddlesack. I have only used the wire guard for 3 days, but I think it was
the right choice. I don't see it rubbing the frame, whereas from the
pictures I have seen it is easy to imagine the Hupe rubbing.

Whoa nelly! From the looks of it a Periscopa will get my bars considerably
higher than they are now and a little further back. I hadn't realized how tall
that thing was until now. Lovely. Thanks so much, Erl, for sharing about your
experience. On a related note, have you found the B17 (?) saddle adequate for
this setup? Not too narrow or too stiff for all that weight? I'm thinking I'll
want to go with something sprung, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

[RBW] Re: WTB: Periscopa or 80mm Dirt Drop Stem

2013-03-16 Thread WETH
I have equipped an old Motobecane with a periscopa stem and Albatross bars.
I rode the set-up two days ago for about 15 miles and found it quite
comfortable. I did have to move my hand position forward, toward the stem,
on the Albatross bars, otherwise the handling was a bit twitchy. That is
most likely an issue related to the Motobecane. The handling improved when
I had more weight further forward on the bar, right before the curve. I
suppose that means I really should be using a longer stem. (However, it is
nice to have extra grip space closer to my body for when I want to sit up
more and precise handling is not an issue.) I did not experience any elbow
pain on my ride, but then I never have from riding. I did notice a bit of
soreness in my biceps toward the end of the ride, not a bad thing, just
something new. Overall the setup was quite comfortable both leisurely
riding a paved trail and riding more quickly on the road. Here is a photo
of my set-up in the hope it gives you a sense of what the periscopa bar
might do for your set-up.

There are a few more photos of the set-up
here:
http://erlhouston.smugmug.com/Portfolio/Cyling/Motobecane-Super-Mirage/28440802_jtmxgv

Like you I am still experimenting a bit, hence the green grips which are
really sections of old garden hose and duct tape. I am trying to decide
how much padding I want on the bars. Eventually I will wrap everything
with some maroon Newbaums bar tape from Rivendell.

Safe cycling,
Erl

[RBW] Re: Legolas!

2013-03-16 Thread Joe Bernard
It can be ordered with a threaded steerer. The Legolas is based on Mark's
custom cross Rivs, which use threadless, but it can be ordered either way,
same as the Roadeo.

Also noted in the latest email is that the Glorius and Wilbury with the
insanely-fancy lugs can still be ceated. *That*..is a tempting offer..

[RBW] WTB: Periscopa or 80mm Dirt Drop Stem

2013-03-16 Thread jar351
Hi, folks. Has anyone got an old Periscopa lying in the old parts bin?

I've got my town/touring bike set up with Soma Oxford bars (very like
Albratrosses) and a Kalloy Dirt Drop 100mm stem (Nitto DD copy), and I'm
not quite getting the laid-back position that I'm going for. Previously,
I'd been using a 110mm Technomic that had me too far forward and a little
lower than I'd prefer. I stuck with it for 9 months--god knows why--despite
lingering elbow pain after any ride longer than 20 minutes. I've only had
the Kalloy DD on for a couple of days but already I'm pretty sure it
represents a sizable improvement. It places the bars about 2.5cm higher and
1.5 cm back from where they were with the Technomic, allowing me to lean
forward less and take weight off my hands. Essentially, I'd like to take
that a step further with a Periscopa, which should get the bars a little
further back and maybe even a smidgeon higher. Failing that, I'd take an
80mm DD and use it with a shim.

This is an admittedly lousy pic that more or less shows what my current
setup looks like:

And here's another one that shows how I had things until just recently:

Even if you haven't got the part I'm looking for, any thoughts on the
ergonomics of an upright setup would be greatly appreciated. The funny
thing is that I get worse elbow pain after riding a semi-upright setup
(stem 1" higher than saddle, hands just behind stem) than I do after riding
a drop-bar setup (stem level with saddle, hands forward of stem on hoods).
I can only surmise that it has more to do with the angles of my elbows and
the way force is transmitted through them than the amount of weight that I
have on my hands.

The Hub and Waterfront Bikes are both great for rentals. The Hub is also

Other interesting shops to check out:

I learned from a blug post a while bike that Grant visited

[RBW] Re: NYC bike shops and rentals

2013-03-16 Thread Kai Vierstra
I can't say I know much about bike rental in the city, Bike and Roll seems
like it does a brisk business and they have a lot of locations. As for
shops, I like the folks at NYC Velo. Their shop's not really interesting
outside of a normal well stocked bike shop but their repair staff is nice
and well informed. They might know more about your rental options.

For me the problem was that if the saddlebag was anything but full...
ie if the hupe was un-weighted... the hupe tended to move around and
 scratch the seat stays.
I tried using zip ties to secure it without success. I think if I
wanted to get another saddlebag support, I would go with something more
 like a "real" rack.

I was 100+ pounds overweight, started running and eating better, and lost a
lot. Over time my knees started giving me trouble, and so I took up
cycling about 4 years ago, migrating more and more to the bike. I had
purchased a Trek 1.2, and really found I enjoyed riding. Then I found GPs

about the type of riding I wanted to do - long rides through the

I ended up ordering the AHH in November. Some delays but I got the bike
last week. I've never been so impressed by a purchse or a company. Heck
 - I even got a Thank You card in the mail yesterday from RIV - signed by
everyone. I'm a convert, and can't wait to get out on a nice long ride
tomorrow. Have a good weekend everyone!
