[RBW] Another dirt road exploration.
My friend Ed and I got out yesterday for another dirt road exploration yesterday, again on our singlespeeds. We took the Max train out to Hillsboro from Portland where we headed into Banks for a few miles on the Banks Vernonia trail before getting onto some rural gravel backroads. Due to the wet weather we didn't have to contend with dust or even thick mud, just rim eating fine grime. The road we were exploring was Strassel Rd which was pretty nice. While it was steep in parts and forced us to walk here and there, it would be no problem on a geared bike. There was very little traffic and no rabid dogs. It was definitely beautiful in spots but as always when on back roads heading out to the coast, sections of clearcut here and there which are rather depressing. We enjoyed a nice descent on Strassel Rd which spilled us out onto Timber Rd where we resumed climbing although with no need to walk. Timber Rd is fantastic, probably one of my favorite roads in the area although just far enough away that I don't ride it too often. There was minimal traffic which included a few logging trucks but they generally gave us a wide berth. We rode into Vernonia for coffee and lunch and then returned to Hillsboro via the 18 mile Banks Vernonia trail and then back roads. The proof: http://www.flickr.com/photos/41335973@N00/sets/72157633053478798/with/8576784877/ I definitely want to do some more exploration into the coast range as spring moves along. There's definitely a lot of potential for dirt road rambles although without a car there's just no way of avoiding long days on the road which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Oh, same as last week. Neither of us were on Rivs but there were plenty of RBW purchased accessories. I wouldn't hesitate to do this ride on my Hilsen. I just ended up riding the SS again in solidarity with Ed whose geared bike (Rawland) isn't running. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I haven't ridden them but Vittoria Randonneur Hypers come in 38mm size and they are 120 TPI. I've got a pair of 32mm Hypers and love them. Re: [RBW] are there any true 700x40 plush, high tpi tires?
The Panaracer Pasela 700x37 has a pretty high TPI casing. And it's a true 37mm when inflated, unlike most tyres that are several mm smaller than the size marked on the casing. I rather like them - I've been using them on a Surly LHT for quite a few years. On feel and visual inspection, the casing seems pretty much identical to that on the Pari-Moto 650bx38, though the tread on the Pasela is considerably thicker. Re: [RBW] Please review this bell from Rivendell...
I hadn't fully appreciated the headset-spacer variant of the hammerstrike bell until your message, Michael - so, last weekend I picked one up and now am happy to give a full report. I have a 1 threadless Legolas which has long-suffered with another's (failed) tapped-spacer-mount, which had promptly stripped out due to inadequate material... This Crane headset-spacer version is a very nice, machined solid block that should give much better support over the miles. It is sized for 9/8, but comes with a nice, thick shim for 1 steerers - a good little widget in its own right to add to the tacklebox (I'm running a 1 1/8 Nitto lugged stem already on a good-n-tall spacer of it's own, so this was able to add onto the existing height). My only criticism is that could look a bit wonky when mixed into a stack of 1 and 9/8 bits (being oversize). This will not rotate when part of a tightened or compressed headset stack, under normal operating conditions. Just make sure your steerer is tall enough. I also have a headset-canti-brake-hanger-spacer in my setup, and this did not interfere with it (though the re-arrangement required an adjustment of overall brake cable length). The bell itself is well-made and effectively the same as the springy-dingy versions. RBW also offers a larger hammerstrike, but I haven't investigated if those are M5 mount (or not). http://tinyurl.com/co46hcs and http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/bellhed.htm =- Joe Bunik Walnut Creek, CA On 3/13/13, Michael john11.2...@gmail.com wrote: Was thinking of getting this. *http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/bellhed.htm*http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/bellhed.htm My only concern is I think it doesn't rotate around the steerer tube, so one would have to know exactly where you want it facing before cranking down on the headset locknut. I can rehearse that with my regular bell before installing. The price is very nice. I have lotsa room for it on the sterrer tube/headset. Let me know if you have it and like it, and if anything to think twice about before attempting installation. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: are there any true 700x40 plush, high tpi tires?
TPI (threads per inch) by itself doesn't really influence tire performance. We once tested a Grand Bois prototype with twice the TPI next to a standard tire, on the track, and found that both required the same power output. The twice the TPI tire never was introduced. Instead, Grand Bois and Panaracer went back to the drawing board, and designed the new Extra Leger tires, which truly are a big leap in terms of suppleness, comfort and (as far as the first indications go) speed. We still have to test these in a controlled setting... Back to TPI, it's a variable that is easy to quantify, but just like bike weight doesn't determine performance, TPI doesn't determine tire performance. These variables are somewhat correlated, because a lighter frame tends to be more lively, and a high-TPI casing tends to be more supple. But it's entirely possible to make a light bike or a high-TPI tire that performs poorly. Re: [RBW] Re: RivReader asks if aluminum bars should be replaced after 5 years?
Lots of salient points in this thread - particularly about finite cycles to failure of aluminum. I'll only add a couple thoughts that I keep in my head: - Aluminum bends well - once. Maybe twice. - Consider where your teeth sit in relation to your handlebar and stem. - There is no price for piece of mind. A few years ago, when I decided to stop my quickbeam by placing my index finger between the handlebar and a suddenly-opened car door, my Nitto bar actually didn't bend all that much. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/3675517009/in/photostream/ I actually had to force myself to cut it so I would not reuse it down the road. But, I do expect my rigs to ramble over a variety of terrain, and there is cyclical load involved. I use a bright light and magnifying lens every few months when I clean things. But, I've had worse luck with cranksets than I ever have had with bars. Which is where I think I'd like to see some steel. http://ramblings.cyclofiend.com/?p=399 http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/2089364757/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclofiend/3950425015/ - Jim / cyclofiend.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. So I was wondering if anything to be concerned about. Anyone know anything about aluminum bar life? Do I need to throw away the old used set of bars I have? Don't want any accidents. I can't give a definitive answer when to scrap your bars, but accidents do happen with old aluminium bars. An older guy I just spoke to became very concerned with this after a close friend of his had advanced facial surgery after his handlebar snapped. He fell straight on his face and got multiple scull/face fractures. Anecdotal evidence often are misleading, you really need proper statistics in the end, but his handlebars were quite old, 30-40 years (seventies bike, original bars). I'm quite sure failing old bars is a rare occurance, but I'm beginning to think about applying the same kind of attitude towards handlebars that I have on forks and helmets - that is that even if it's extremely rare with such accidents, the consequences can be severe if your fork brakes or you hit your head. This in turn means my bikes have steel forks, and I wear a helmet almost always when biking. I will definitely stay away from older exclusive/vintage lightweight bars. [RBW] Re: Bullmoose on a Homer Hilsen? Opinions please!
I think a bullmoose bar on a Hilsen would be delightful. The slick setup is to get the hinged Soma Thumbie shifter pods from Riv and run them inboard of the V of the bullmoose extension. That leaves all the outboard real estate for the brakelevers and acres of cloth tape. I've got bullmoose as the alternate cockpit for my Bombadil, but I haven't gotten around to setting that up again. Re: [RBW] More yummy fat road bike tires on the market
Success! Let me know how they ride? On the A23s I had one bead on with tire levers and talc, and when I tried to push the tube in under the tire, I felt like I was going to pinch flat it just forcing it in. That said, I never tried stretching it beforehand. Perhaps it would have helped. Re: [RBW] Another dirt road exploration.
This looks like a great diversion from Rando this year, Mike. Nice roads! Brian Hanson Seattle, WA On Mar 21, 2013, at 8:17 AM, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: My friend Ed and I got out yesterday for another dirt road exploration yesterday, again on our singlespeeds. Re: [RBW] Horizontal Drop outs??? was: Bombadil v. 2.0 and new Fatty Rumpkins
I prefer verticals for derailer bicycles. Easier to pop the wheel back in, and a better fender-line. On horizontal bikes the fender has to be spaced further forward of the rear tire to make room to slide the wheel out. Joe Bernard Vallejo, CA.
