[RBW] Friday exploratory ride report.

2013-04-13 Thread hsmitham
Left my home late in the day and was in the saddle again.

Rode 12 miles and climbed approximately 1400' to the start of Mendenhall
Ridge Rd.

Rode 10 miles to Mendenhall Saddle and climbed approximately 1600'.

I had to turn around with guests coming into town and a BBQ dinner to
prepare.

33 miles and 3000' elevation.

This is the lower part of a ride Mike S. I are planning to ride in May.
Acton metro station up to Mount Gleason and down Mendenhall to Little T.

[RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?

2013-04-13 Thread Matt Beebe
On Friday, April 12, 2013 11:53:28 PM UTC-4, Jimmy Hutch wrote:
A reliable bike will get ridden way more than an old artfully crafted
lugged beauty that needs constant TLC.

I don't get why people think older bikes need constant TLC. If anything,
a good bike from the 70's, 80's or 90's is going to be *more* reliable for
the price, than a new bike at that same price. And if a person rides a
bike, purchased brand-new or not- actually rides it- he or she will
eventually need to replace things on it.Tires, chain/cogs, brakes,
etc. They haven't invented wear-proof parts yet (though steel
chainrings will get you farther than buttery soft Aluminum :)

I'm not trying to be a wise ass here-the beauty of vintage bikes is
that they tend to be simpler in design, so unless you buy something that
only takes French threading or something else oddball, anybody experienced
with pre-techno lego blocks can probably figure them out.Rivendell has
managed to similarly keep unnecessary complication out of their bikes, and
that's one of the many draws to them. But really, that's the beauty of
bicycles in general-most of them are simple and cheap to fix, compared
to say, a car.

I understand the desire not to buy something that *immediately* needs TLC.
But on the other hand, there are so many pre-owned bikes out there
that have barely been ridden, and furthermore there are bikes shops that
sell older bikes that they have refurbished/made sure everything is in
order. Bikes Not Bombs or Cambridge Antique Market around here, for
example.

One more thing about Bruce Gordon's Half Clips: Bruce modestly describes them
as city bike hardware. I find them well suited to multi-day touring. They
keep your feet in place yet allow modest shifts during the long haul which I
anyway find helps prevent my feet getting sore.

Well done. If you can find a set somewhere, Berthoud composites will look
great on that bike. While it may put too much weight on the handle bars for
comfortable steering, a stem mount bottle cage may be a solution. Amazing to
think something this old already is now set to give another 30 years of happy
service.

“the market is too race-centric; carbon fiber, electric shifting, full

Amen to that. I don't sneer at racing bikes -- some of the bikes I'd love
to own are old road and track bikes from before the '80s, and I praise the
powers for clipless pedals and Flite saddles -- but the current technology
is just a huge insulation between the machine and the fun of riding, at
least for my own taste. (I am having fun with 7 speed indexed dt shifting
on the Ram -- so exotic!)

But drivetrains so complex that they require computerized shifting, 14 lb
bikes that break if they fall over and hit something: I don't sneer at
carbon fiber or multispeed drivetrains in themselves, but only at the
extremes they've been pushed to all for -- this is what I believe, but I'm
open to refutation -- marketing purposes. Evan a mainstream backlash was
inevitable and has been growing for the better part of a decade.

I certainly don't agree with everything in Just Ride but I'm generally on
the same side of the fence.

Re: [RBW] Re: Riv model decoder? New Riv owner

2013-04-13 Thread Tim Gavin
Yes, it's a Road Standard; I confirmed with the prev owner. 753/531, no
canti bosses, no kickstand mount.
It's well equipped with Phil Wood hubs on Sun CR18 rims, 105 brakes and
Campy 21spd gearset.
I have a Bontrager gel seat on it (that I like).  I'm tempted to go Brooks;
I have a Chinese-made Brooks-knockoff on my '77 Shwinn 3spd city bike. Nice
and comfy after a bunch of neatsfoot oil.
I picked up some brown bar tape, silver bottle cages, a mirror, and a
kickstand at my LBS today. Photo shoot and riding this weekend, hopefully.

I'm not past clipless, but like the choice to ride without. So, I like the

Hi!

Long time no rap!

I've got a couple things sitting around that need a good home. Both are in
great shape and fully functional.

The Sackville is probably four years old and has been used, but never
abused. I've loved this bag, but I've reconfigured things a bit lately and
really want a Little Loafer for the front of my Hilsen. 120.00 OBO.

The Silvers are 9/10, save for some brake pad wear. Currently loaded are
salmon brake pads, which I dropped in the moment I got them. These brakes
probably have 1000 miles on them. I changed out to Paul Racers...gotta
cover at least part of my cost there. :(60.00 OBO

You can check this stuff out here: http://alturl.com/oxux3

We can split shipping to the Continental US, whatever it comes to. We can
work that out.

I dunno. I have an early '70s Super Mirage Mixte. It's my daily rider.

There's not a lot of clearance on the mixte for fenders, so I suspect the
mainstream model is similar. If you want to run 28's, there's no problem.
But beyond that it gets dicey. I'm using Planet Bike fenders. They're
easier to fit than anything else. The bike handles really well and if you
can adjust your fenders to something between 28's and 32's you have a nice
ride.

I'm using a rear rack and a Wald folding pannier basket. Works well.

It may be blasphemous to say, but bikes have improved over the decades. Just
something simple: almost all new non-race bikes have rack mounts and bottle
bosses. Try to find that feature on most 1970s bikes. And fattish tire
clearance is easier to find on current bikes than on bikes from earlier
generations. Also, I have to believe that most cyclists prefer indexed shifting
(RBW people excepted). And don't get me started on brakes! And smart gearing!
Every time I've tried to resurrect an old bike, even one in good shape, I've
had to modernize some of the components to suit my preferences. That could run

Most of the classic Japanese names no longer have any factories. The old
tooling is long-gone. None of the skilled workers remain. For example,
Dia-Compe is little more than a warehouse in Taiwan. The new SunXCD parts
are sub-contracted out, mostly to Taiwan, it appears. It's great that some
of the old names are involved, but it remains to be seen what they can
achieve. (Remember that Mr. Kawai is in his 90s.)

There are small shops in Japan that never did close down, like Nitto and
Honjo. They still make their own products the old way.

Regarding freewheels, Compass Bicycles has looked into bringing back true
high-quality freewheels, but it's very difficult. First, there isn't
anybody with the know-how any longer of how to make these, and second,
freewheels have huge economies of scale. There are many different small
parts, which means huge tooling costs. The actual production costs once you
have the tooling are very small. So if you sell 100,000 freewheels a year,
you can offer them at a decent price. But if you sell 1000, the price goes
up tremendously.

This is true in many respects. Low end (sub $500) mountain bikes have
indexed shifting that, once adjusted, works well and for a long time;
brakes that stop better than any long-reach single pivot on a Schwinn, and
sturdy but light aluminum frames. I expect that they won't be in as good
condition as a Collegiate after 40 years, but they certainly are better in
many respects.

But a refurbished Collegiate from a bike shop is still a very viable and in
some respects -- IMO -- a sturdier option -- not to mention a used mountain
bike from a bike shop.

Junzo feels the time is right to re-enter the bicycle component
business. As he puts it “the market is too race-centric; carbon fiber,
electric shifting, full suspension, 11 speed, doesn’t really enhance the
enjoyment of cycling. In the 1970’s and 80’s we cycled to be closer to
nature, for the environment, for our health, for the simple beauty of
cycling.” For these reasons SunXCD will focus on touring and randonneuring
components which were the focus of SunTour during its heyday.

Re: [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?

2013-04-13 Thread Tim McNamara
There is a tendency to look back with rose colored glasses in the world of
bikes, guitars and amps, whatever. The majority of 1970s bikes were really
crappy, not even as good as most of the bikes currently sold at Target. I
spent many hours in my bike shop wrench days fixing the BMA/6 bikes to try to
make them operable. Even the lower end imports from Motobecane, Gitane,
Peugeot, etc., were pretty much junk. And the top end bikes weren't much
better made than the current mid-level bikes from Rivendell.

While the Bridgestones of yore are highly revered, the current offerings from
Riv and others blow them out of the water. My wife's Heron is vastly better
made than her 1993 XO-1 was. The brazing on the XO-1 was crude, the lugs were
crude, the paint was crude by comparison. All of the AHHs and Atlantises and
Rambouillets etc. that I have seen are far, far better made bikes than the old
Bridgestones.

As for components, modern mid-level stuff is far better designed and made than
the old mid-level stuff. At the top end the modern stuff works better than the
old stuff... although I much prefer the looks of Nuovo Record and I use
friction shifting on most of my bikes :-) We all have our rose colored glasses.

There is really a lot of room under those brakes. On my 76 Raleigh with
the same brakes, I had a pair of 42mm shorties to keep the brakes clean,
and could clear (and cover) 1-3/8 cross tires. Even 36mm Honjos should
clear 1-1/4 tires, but may not have the coverage you would like. You
could fit 42mm Honjos and easily clear and cover 1-1/4 tires. Honjos also
attach perfectly to this style frame - they are copies of the French
fenders that were made for this bike.

perhaps beyond budget*)*, you absolutely will not find a better bike for
less than $500 than a 1980's Trek including any model from the 400 to the
720, or any number of specimen from Specialized, Fuji, Univega, late 80's
Centurion, Bridgestones (as mentioned), many of which had bottle bosses and
fender/rack mounts, good components (certainly better than you will find on
a sub $500 bike today), attractive, long-lasting steel frames, and
geometries that compare to the most comfortable (non-rivendell) bikes made
today. If you're scared of vintage, you can find $1000+ bikes that were
made in the 90's or 2000's at a steep discount, often less than $500,
virtually unridden. The late 90's/early 2000's trek 520 or Fuji
Tourings are good examples.

Here's a nice Trek 420 for $420:

[RBW] Re: Suntour is back says it's keeping it real w/ old skool ideology

2013-04-13 Thread Jan Heine
Taiwan, like many places, has a wide variety of manufacturers. Some produce
wonderful quality, others focus more on price. You need to make parts where
the knowledge and machinery exists to make those parts. For example, I
cannot think of a single forged square-taper crank that has been made in
the U.S., ever. So we knew that unless we wanted to build an entire new
industry, we couldn't have our new René Herse cranks made here.

Our engineer spent months visiting every factory in Taiwan to get an
impression of what they were capable of doing, before choosing our current
supplier of the raw forgings. They also make parts for Ducati motorcycles
and other high-end brands. Of course, they are more expensive than others,
but to us, the quality is worth it.

Ron, Will and Matt, thanks for all the input. Here is a photo of the space
I have between brakes and the top of my 1 1/4 or roughly 32mm tire. The
clearance appears to be about 15mm.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MBpqTwe8qHQ/UWm8cWpE7hI/AMI/-ovJr2_x2X4/s1600/Motobecane%2B%25281%2Bof%2B1%2529.jpg

Matt, yeah I am looking forward to riding this bike for years. I am more
vintage than the bike, and I can see riding this even as I age. The set up
gives me an upright, relaxed position that is easy on neck, wrists and
back. Interestingly, I am always tweaking the fit of my other bikes trying
to dial in the perfect position. With this bike, I set the seat height,
dropped the stem in as far as it would go, and slightly tilted the bars
down. No additional tweaking was needed. I guess I got lucky!

Thanks again, Erl

clear 1-1/4 tires, but may not have the coverage you would like. You
could fit 42mm Honjos and easily clear and cover 1-1/4 tires. Honjos also
attach perfectly to this style frame - they are copies of the French

There's not a lot of clearance on the mixte for fenders, so I suspect the

But beyond that it gets dicey. I'm using Planet Bike fenders. They're
easier to fit than anything else. The bike handles really well and if you
can adjust your fenders to something between 28's and 32's you have a nice
 ride.

I'm using a rear rack and a Wald folding pannier basket. Works well.

Re: [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?

2013-04-13 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
There is no one bike for everybody.

Today I saw a Trek 7.1 FX on the light rail train in Minneapolis. Just guessing
it's a $450ish new bike. From an unbiased viewpoint, it has lots of attractive
features. Good tire clearance (fendered 700x40 easy), smart gearing, good
brakes, high handlebars. Easy to rack and fender. Sure, it had lower end
Shimano Alivio components, but I'm not sure that 20-year-old XT parts worked
any better or were more durable than present day Alivio. Obviously it lacks the
cachet and street cred of a vintage steed, but not everybody who wants a bike
to ride shares that nostalgia. For most cyclists shopping in this price range
and wanting a good bike with minimal hassle, I'd not hesitate to recommend this
model. Just walk into a Trek shop and buy it. No hunting Craigslist, no
uncertainty about history or worn/broken parts, and a warranty!

Of course, the case could be made that a suitable older bike is worth the extra
effort and risk of chasing down Craigslist leads and fixing up the bike as
needed. Many of us here enjoy that sort of thing. Many of our significant
others, little sisters, buddies at work, etc, probably don't have that hobby,
and don't understand why buying a bike has to be a fussy, complicated process.
Those of use who've been drinking the kool-aid for years sometimes forget that
not everybody shares our tastes or our willingness to put up with
inconvenience. For better or worse, the mass market bikes are excellent for
mass market cyclists.

Re: [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?

2013-04-13 Thread James Warren

My brother didn't have much budget for a bike, but wanted for camping/riding.
He got a Trek 7.1 FX, and he and I had a great time touring for two nights out
in Marin.

But there was one big issue: with its cheaper wheels, he has a lot of
spoke-breaking problems on this bike. It's more frequent than should be
considered tolerable for a reliable bike. To keep using this bike in the ways
he likes (commuting, overnighters), he is going to need a better rear wheel. If
this is typical of the model, I'd say that adds about $200 to its price. Solid
wheels are non-negotiable.

The Motobecane Super Mirage circa 1976 belonged to my father-in-law. When
it didn't sell at a yard sale, he gave it to me. I didn't like the way it
rode with the original drop bars and saddle. It sat in my shed for a few
years. After reading many of the posts on this group and seeing the
photos, I was inspired to fix the bike up Rivendell style and get it back
on the road. I overhauled the wheels, bottom bracket and pedal bearings,
replaced all the cables and brake pads, installed new 27 x 1 1/4 tires,
Brooks B68 saddle, and Rivendell cockpit (Nitto Albatross bars, Nitto
Periscopa stem, Newbaum maroon colored bar tape (matches the head badge),
Shimano MTB silver brake levers). I left the pletscher rack, Weinmann
brakes, Suntour stem mounted shifters, Suntour V-GT rear derailer and
kickstand. I also left on the county bike registration sticker that
 expired in 1978.

The Newbaum bar tape feels great; I rode yesterday without gloves.
Though, I usually ride with gloves to protect my hands in a fall, the bike
 lends itself to gloveless riding!

I adore riding this bike as currently configured. I thank everyone for
the inspiration and knowledge needed for me to do this.

Though I do not imagine riding this bike in the rain, I will look into
whether I can squeeze in fenders. I also want to fit a bottle cage or two
for carrying water on longer rides. Also still on the list is finishing
 the bar tape with twine.

Here are a few photos from yesterday. More photos here if interested:

Junzo feels the time is right to re-enter the bicycle component
business. As he puts it “the market is too race-centric; carbon fiber,
electric shifting, full suspension, 11 speed, doesn’t really enhance the
enjoyment of cycling. In the 1970’s and 80’s we cycled to be closer to
nature, for the environment, for our health, for the simple beauty of
cycling.” For these reasons SunXCD will focus on touring and randonneuring
components which were the focus of SunTour during its heyday.

2013-04-13 Thread Ron Mc
btw, the Honjos have more clearance than the shorties because of the way

It's just the 36mm fenders might not cover enough on the 32mm tires.

Tree Fort has the VO 45mm hammered fenders for $55, (these are made and

Re: [RBW] New Bike Fitting System

2013-04-13 Thread Garth
I was confused here , as SunTour HAS been around , I've seen their stuff
online since the 2000's.

 from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SunTour

In late 1989, Mori Industries Inc., a Japanese steel fabrication company,
bought Sakae Ringyo Ltd., which made handlebars, cranksets, pedals, and
seatposts. In mid-1990, Mori bought Maeda SunTour.

By 1993, SunTour's share of the market had dropped to five per cent of the
U.S. market. At the end of 1994, Mori decided to shut down their bicycle
component business. In March 1995 Daisuke Kobayashi and Hideo Hashizume,
the former owners of SR Sakae Ringyo, arranged a management buyout. The new
management took over in July, 1995, purchasing the SunTour name and the SR
factory in Taiwan. Mori Industries left the bicycle component business,
selling off SunTour's Japanese facilities piecemeal.

SR SunTour USA closed its U.S. offices in early 1995. The SunTour name
lived on as SR Suntour, but the SunTour component designs did not survive.
The tooling that produced the once-prized Suntour derailleurs, shifters,
and associated bicycle components was sold for scrap.

So this New Suntour is just as the article linked to about SunXCD, and
it appears to be the Good STUFF

I'm interested in the Hubs for sure !!! The cranks if done with
precision the removable adapters will be great ... if not ...not !!!
Wobble wobble .

[RBW] Cantilver bosses on older Rivs, LongLow broken canti bolt

2013-04-13 Thread BSWP
First the Bay Bridge, now my LongLow. I was working on my front brakes, got
the right side cantilever arm off (older Ritchey Logic brakes), though with
some effort. I realize now there must have been thread-locker on the bolt.
The left side was equally tough, and after about a turn and a half, the
bolt head sheared right off - leaving the bulk of the bolt in the canti
boss.

I'll check with RBW on Monday, but wonder if anyone on the list knows
whether older Rivs (my LongLow was made in 1998) used screw-in cantilever
bosses? Or were they all brazed? I don't see any wrench flats on the base
of the boss, so I don't expect I can use a ProblemSolvers stud:

http://problemsolversbike.com/products/cantilever_studs

More likely, I'll have to drill the old bolt, and use an easy-out to get it
out.

Kind of afraid this would be the case, Jan. I have a private horde of 7
Suntour Winner Pros. Fortunately Winner Pro were so well made, and now,
thanks to a tip from Patrick, I found someone who is much more adept than I
rebuilding freewheels, mine should outlive me.

On Saturday, April 13, 2013 10:17:47 AM UTC-5, Jan Heine wrote:

Welcome development especially so if quality approaches that of its

note. Wonderifthese are made inJapan or sub-contracted out.

I was unable to find the perfect '70s era Masi for anywhere near the price
Tom Kellogg of Spectrum charge me to make a 30th anniversary bike for me

wonderful Geo and looks of the 70s, but much more tire clearance (currently
using the new Grand Bois 700x30 Extra Legers, could easily fit 35s), the
brazing and lug work is definitely better (may the bike gods strike me down
for dissing Fidelio!) and Tom's wizardry with the paint is second to none.

I am very happy with the DT Simplex Retrofriction shifters. So sometimes I
may not know exactly which gear I am in. As long as pedaling is
comfortable, what else do I need?

tire clearance is easier to find on current bikes than on bikes from
earlier generations. Also, I have to believe that most cyclists prefer
indexed shifting (RBW people excepted). And don't get me started on brakes!
And smart gearing! Every time I've tried to resurrect an old bike, even one
in good shape, I've had to modernize some of the components to suit my

I do have experience felting wool (which is what you are thinking about).
Your cap might felt nicely if you try felting it: then again, it might not.
If you do felt it, put it in the washer in hot water, let it agitate for a
bit, and *keep checking it every few minutes*.

Your cap doesn't look like a great candidate for felting.

Re: [RBW] Wrong Kind of Tire Tread

What? Tires wear out? I figured would just keep swapping and
experimenting and nothing will ever wear out.

Glad you found it before going out on the ride. And how come none of my
mudflaps are that clean?

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1467189/bike/IMG_2216.JPG

On the lights you can see an example of the light pattern at Peter White’s
site (about 1/4 of the way down). http://peterwhitecycles.com/headlights.aspi
used these with a hub dynamo and the bottle dynamo for sale. The light
pattern is very good, and i found it adequate for city riding, i ended up
replacing them with something much more expensive (partly for the
additional brightness in unlit areas, but mostly for looks). I think they
are adequate for city riding/commuting and a great value. Some would say
they are ugly, but i would call them not flashy :). Same deal with the
bottle dynamo, it worked fine but i replaced it with a Son, mainly for the
aesthetics, this bottle dynamo powered my supernova just as well.

Dura-Ace non-aero levers. These are great levers, feel really solid.
Unfortunately i could not find replacement dura-ace hoods so i used
dia-compe ones, which work, but not 100% correct aesthetically. These
would work really well on moustache bars, the hoods underneath are cut
because these are used. There are also quite a few scratches along the
edges of the levers. These are not lookers. $10

Dia-Compe non-aero levers. These are similiar to the 204 with the
quick-release in the lever blade, but the blades themselves are textured.
The original gum hoods finally let go, so i’ve replaced them with new
dia-compe hoods. These have not been used/mounted since i’ve replaced the
hoods. The black bit sticking out of the top are adjusters, i’ve taken one
off in one of the pictures. $20

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1467189/bike/IMG_2216.JPG

Fork Mounted Cable Stop: To move the cable-stop from the headset down to
the fork (helps with chatter), i didn’t have enough clearance with all of
my accessories to use it. $5

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1467189/bike/IMG_2217.JPG

Bar End Pods to convert DT shifters to bar end shifters, some
scratches/wear around the edges. includes what’s shown in the pictures.
 $25

Bags

I recently cleaned out some closets and i’m embarrassed at the number of
excessive bags that i’ve accumulated (both bike and other types), so need
to clear some space.

If you want to look at all the pictures you can start here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/minhi/sets/72157632610369600/

Berthoud GB704 Bag and Rack: $225

This is the smaller of the two Berthoud Saddlebags the GB704, it’s about;
7L and measures

220mm W x 170mm H X 250mm D. Berthoud numbers their bags funny so the
GB704 is actually the smaller bag (whereas the GB604 is the bigger one). I
originally bought both sizes thinking i’d swap between the two bags and two
bikes but i’ve used the larger one only and the second bike i’ve dedicated
to a different bag. I’ve used this smaller one a handful of times (sunny,
no rain). It’s in the grey berthoud material with leather piping, it’s a
very handsome bag i get compliments on mine all the time (even more so then
my NS tweed bags :) )

The rack has never been mounted as both bags came with a mount and i only
used the one. The rack is quite beefy and makes carrying heavier items a
little more manageable as it provides a platform from below to support the
load. The rack comes with a shim to fit a 27.2 seat-post, if you have a
different size you’ll need to come up with your own shim. This combo
normally runs about $400.
