We simply disagree. I have no issue with discussions of Riv-philosophy-related products they don't make/sell. I *do* get a little uncomfortable with the who makes a cheap Sackville type stuff. As far as I'm concerned that's asking for the made in China alternative, which Grant doesn't offer because he doesn't believe in it. As someone else said, this type of thing can be easily Googled. I looked at the tester registration and it seems to me they are offering the unlikely prospect of getting a saddle in return for a lot of my personal data -- name, address, email, weight, etc. And I have to write a testimonial that I expect they'll use for marketing purposes. They also didn't promise one would be asked to test a saddle from what I can tell -- just Brooks products. I'd expect the real payoff is mail and email from them. There is the 10 percent discount in their store for a year. There also seems to be a strong interest in why we are not buying their bags and what we'd pay for them. [RBW] Dynamo USB charger
I have experience with the Supernova Plug. The iPhone has specific requirements to how the charger ramps up to the required 5V. In practice this means that you have to consistently be moving pretty fast to get an effective charge. I'd suggest that this may be a decent plan if you can consistently ride, say, 16 mph without slowing down. If you drop down to 12-13 mph or slower, the charge will stop, and the battery may even drain (at least it seems that way). My advice is to look at products from New Trent. I have the big 12000 mAh battery pack, and it's awesome. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Brook's new waterproof Cambium saddle coming out
I think the waterproof angle is pushback against the impression amongst many cyclists that owning a leather Brooks saddle is an issue in inclement weather. Which is hilarious in light of the fact the product originates in * England.* I suspect they are equally bewildered by this marketing problem. 9 of 11 riders have posted 366 photos of bikes and riders in the wild. [RBW] Re: Re-Introduction
I agree the brifters were fun and cool. I had shimano sti and campy ergo on bikes in times past. Wanted to try the sram stuff. Ultimately I decided to go back to downtube friction via Paddy-the-Peddlers adapter. Now soon to go on the ends of Alba's. It's all good fun. I guess I am one of those people that switches things around a lot! Ha ha: every time I do though I am thinking that this is the way it will be forever... Right... I'm fairly certain now after going back and forth a couple of times that I want to be all friction all the time. I've gotten very comfortable with it and I enjoy the extra movement that it promotes. Will the board be any better off if I hit the Post button? Even if it's just a tiny bit better, that's good 2. Will the board be any worse off if I hit the Discard button instead? Of the posts I type, I end up hitting the Discard button maybe 30% of the time. I've regretted posting things in the past. Yeah, its a pretty gruff group in general but I don't think they bill themselves as otherwise. There are alot of comments about how they got a Raleigh Competition for $50 which is every bit as good as a Rambouillet., but opinions are like, well never mind. A lot of them do have good knowledge on older bikes and their intricacies, you just have to get through the attitude. [RBW] Re: Who steals a bike rack from Rivendell?!?!
We still have the gifted PEAKSRACK (dot-com?)--and a smaller one. Maybe recyclers who fig'd the powder coating would be a drag. Maybe also, it has occurred, some kind of retaliation for Jenny's role in the attempted theft last month or two ago---she got driver's license, and they got the guy, and..I dunno. [RBW] Dynamo USB charger
As Jim points out you have to do your homework with these. Some devices have a specific voltage profile and will refuse to charge if it's not met when you plug it in. For any of them try to confirm the limitations, some of these get around it by having a small battery as part of the system and the dynamo actually charges the battery, but even with these you sometimes have limitations (like no lights when the battery is charging, or no charging when lights are on). I carry a small supplemental battery pack, I guess you could use the dynamo to charge your supplemental battery, but you still may have the lighting constraints. It's a good idea on,paper but I've yet to see a really elegant solution implemented, even the newer ones have some limited. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: [BOB] Re: Wheelset for Ram
Ian -- Thanks for this. I remain unsure about selling the Sun Rhino wheels and from this agree that it's probably prudent to keep them -- at least, keep them as long as I have the Fargo. I was sorta hoping to do a whole/part trade ... Strategy for now: keep riding the borrowed rims as long as I can whileI keep my eye out for a good deal on a used wheelset. There's a local bike swap this Saturday -- damn, and I have volunteered for the cleanup at church. We'll have to see which waits ... On Wed, Apr 17, 2013 at 2:45 PM, Ian A attew...@gmail.com wrote: IMO: - Dynamo hub wheelset will be an easier sell, due to the popularity of LED lights. As an example the Avenir lights on Amazon are a killer deal. The tires probably have some life left. Probably, a wheelset like this new would cost approx $400.00 (maybe a little more, but if you look at Handspun's prices for similar stuff (Mavic A319 etc). Rotor would cost a few more bucks. The tires are worth something too. On the local CL (no shipping on top), somewhere around $225? That could be a pretty good deal for someone. Probably worth more to just keep the wheels, considering what you must have invested in them. On Tuesday, April 16, 2013 7:02:55 PM UTC-6, bertin753 wrote: Two questions: First, I want to sell the skinny wheelset for the Fargo: Bike shop built Sun Rhyno Lite rims with 32 14 g spokes laced to (rear) black SRAM 8//9/10 Shimano compatible disk cassette hub with Avid BB7 160 mm rotor (not bent!), no cassette; front ditto to Shimano DH 3DN72 set up with Avid rotor as above using Problem Solver's converter (ie, from splined to 6 bolt). Plus pair of moderately used Kevlar bead 35 mm Kojaks and two pairs of 28-35 mm tubes. Wheels have no more than 1,200 miles on them as they shared Fargo duty with the SnoCat wheelset. I see Rhyno Lite wheelsets on sale for as little as $150 (26). What's a fair price for this one? Second: I want a nice silver wheelset for the Ram. The ideal would have sporty-ish rim like an Open Pro, rear 36 and front 32, 14/15 butted spokes, hubs at least 105 level. Best would be a 7 speed wheelset that I could respace to 132.5 But 32/32 or 36/36 and 7 or 8/9/10 are fine. 2a. What are my options for similar rim/hub combos? I mean, what other rims are comparable to the Open Pro? I want something sturdy, sub 500 gram, silver, good reputation. I've used Sun rims like the M14A and the ME14A and they are inexpensive, light, and apparently bullet proof. A semi aero profile is fine. Would prefer something as wide as the Open Pro. As to hubs, as long as they are at Hyperglide, the bearings are decent and they are silver or, at least, not ugly, I'm not particular. 2b. What are the best sources for such wheels -- quality, customer service, price, in that order? 2c. Does anyone have something like that to trade or sell? [RBW] Re: Anyone gone to all upright bars - Albatross, Bosco, etc?
I have albatross bars on both of my bikes - a Betty Foy and a 1978 Schwinn Super Le Tour, and have used them on bikes no longer with me. I have ridden 1,200 km brevets with them, including PBP. I came to the realization that I rarely, if ever, used the drops or hooks anymore and could have sawed the bars off and never missed them. Of course, I used drops when I was racing, but that was long ago and entirely different riding. It pains me to see recreational riders on racing bikes with drop bars too low, their hands on the tops and elbows locked. For me upright bars are far more practical. I thought Shimano RX100 but now I'm thinking Dia-Compe or they almost look like TRP's with the QR button on the outside when I blow up the image. I think I spy an ENO freewheel, too...it's that telltale red. 2 pounds of mussels makes a great dinner for 2 people in a seasoned broth with white wine and seasoning and a good crusty loaf of bread to sop up the juicesheaven in a bowl:) On Wednesday, April 17, 2013 6:06:38 AM UTC-5, EricP wrote: Took yesterday off work in part to get out on the SimpleOne. To followup on Liesl's comments. I have ridden 3 different sizes of the Appaloosa and it is a great feeling, do anything bike. Grant put me on the 700c version earlier this week and it is a super stable comfortable ride. But it does not feel sluggish at all. Happened to be at RBW when Liesl had come in from her first ride on the bike. Grant was a little skeptical about sizing so I am glad to hear that the 26 is in the works. Jim, The New Trent certainly looks like a very good solution. The manufacture of Bike Revolution claims that “At only 9 MPH (14.4 km/h), charging is a fast as a wall powered charger.” The problem is I know very little about the charging requirements of my devices or electronics in general. Until I learn more, I think I might just go with something like the New Trent for my GAP CO tour next month. If you drop down to 12-13 mph or slower, the charge will stop, and the battery may even drain (at least it seems that way). My advice is to look at products from New Trent. [RBW] Re: Dynamo USB charger
First off it's not the charger that will or won't charge an iPhone. If you plugged it in at speed you would be alright. Just never stop or you will have to unplug and plug it back in once back to speed. I've been using the e-werk with cache battery. I have the latest greatest IOS on an iphone 5 and it worked flawlessly last week on tour. Once again if your cache battery is not charged or not there the minute you stop the i-phone yells hey this is an unauthorized charging system or something. I've used this through the last three iPhones with many levels of IOS with no issues at all. Over the last three years I had one cache battery die. Battery packs are great unless you need to charge them. I had used or tried to use a couple of battery packs then charge them with the ewerk. that worked except the ones I tried could not take a charge while charging. Anyway, all of last year we had two of them .. one on my wifes bike and one on mine. They worked flawlessly in rain, snow, mud and sunshine. Good luck Kelly On Thursday, April 18, 2013 9:53:08 AM UTC-5, shawn wrote: Has anyone used or have any knowledge of the Bright-Bike Revolution USB charger. [RBW] Re: Dynamo USB charger
Kelly, From the manufactures FAQ on their web site. “ Why does it take 10 seconds for charging to begin?” “Some devices, such as the iPhone, require a minimum amount of power to charge correctly. If charging begins before input power is sufficient, the device may refuse to charge. The 10 seconds delay gives you time to reach a minimum speed. This allows you to charge and iPhone or other devices that would not otherwise charge correctly. Do you think that would address the issue of starting and stopping? I have asked the manufacture to specifically address stopping and starting again. Thanks On Thursday, April 18, 2013 6:17:18 PM UTC-4, Kelly wrote: First off it's not the charger that will or won't charge an iPhone. If you plugged it in at speed you would be alright. Ryan - the brake levers are the Dia-Compe. And yes, did upgrade to the DOS freewheel (17/19 in this case). Was having problems with the Shimano last fall. Used hard cider for the broth with the mussels. Suggested by a friend. Ended up quite tasty. And yes, crusty bread. Today we've had 4 or so inches of snow, on top of a layer of ice. And it's still snowing. Rarely say this, but am sick and tired of this prolonged cold and snowy weather. Will see how many miles I get on the SimpleOne this year. Last year was about 1200. Like to improve on that. Might be tough, though, with more gigs scheduled during the summer and early fall. The legs were noticing the lack of gearing choices after the ride.
