[RBW] Re: Rocky Point Rd ramble.

2013-05-27 Thread Takashi
Sounds like a very pleasant ride.
Thanks for sharing!

Takashi

2013年5月27日月曜日 5時58分32秒 UTC+9 Mike:

Woke up early this morning and headed out with Rocky Point Rd on my mind.
After a stop for coffee in St Johns I headed across the bridge and onto Hwy
30 for some miles (10? 15?) to the bottom of Rocky Point Rd. Traffic on 30
wasn't bad. There was the usual collection of debris on the shoulder and a
long stretch of rough pavement which is getting prepared for resurfacing
but wasn't really an issue given my 35mm Schwalbe Supremes.

I started heading up Rocky Point Rd and thinking about the first time I
rode it, maybe 6 and a half years ago. I was on my Lemond with a low gear
of 39/25 and was wearing bibs and on SPDs. I had no idea what to expect
from the climb and wasn't looking forward to it at all. Today I was wearing
some shorts, wool t-shirt and platform pedals. My low gear on my Hilsen is
26/28. I rode the first third of the climb in 36/28 which was fine but
there's a spot where the road cranks up and I dropped into my granny,
slowed down and just took in the scenery which is a mixture of clearcut and
dense forest. The road gets very little traffic so it's quite a pleasant
 climb.

I've really grown to love climbing. When I lived in SF and would head out
with friends to ride Bolinas Ridge I was always somewhat anxious as I
struggle on the climbs, yo-yoing off the back hoping I wouldn't get dropped
to hard. I moved up here, started doing a lot of riding by myself, got
turned onto Rivendell and learned to appreciate low gearing and a leisurely
pace. I actually wish the Rocky Point Climb was longer.

In an effort to enjoy the climb a little more I pulled onto one of the
logging roads and explored a couple of arteries. Nothing seemed to offer an
alternative route back to Rocky Point Rd but I did discover some nice
singletrack which I'll explore sometime soon in the future.

I made my way back to Rocky Point Rd and continued the climb up to the top
where it connects with Skyline Blvd, a nice quiet stretch of rolling road.
If I had had more time I would have ventured over to Dixie Mtn for some
gravel rambling but I needed to be home so I headed back to Portland,
dropping off of Skyline at Logie Trail which offers a fast steep twisty
descent. Logie Trail is quite narrow and the pavement is in bad shape.
Making the descent even more treacherous was a fair amount of gravel spread
across the road, I guess in an attempt to patch potholes. I made it down
without incident and headed back to Portland, stopping at a 7-11 for some
V8 and snacks as I was feeling a bonk coming on.

I'm really glad I got out for this ride and did a little exploring. Here's
 some pictures:

Re: [RBW] Re: Replacement chainrings

2013-05-27 Thread Matthew J
Yeah, Mike and Mike have a point. But the problem is in the way Mike 1
made the point. Because of course the corollary is those who do not care
about weight are not in good shape and do not ride their bikes a lot.
Well, I am in good shape, ride my bike a lot, and never think about weight
at all when it comes to my bicycles.

My 1x5 has a White Industries crank so uses White chain rings. My other
two bikes have TA chain rings. TA work very well and are quite durable. I
imagine they weigh less than some rings and more than others. Frankly, I
have no idea. And of course since my multi-speeds have *gasp* heavy
Maxi-Car hubs freewheels, I imagine any weight advantage I get from using
TA over something else goes right out the window compared to using some
modern cassette hub.

Amazing a manage to ride the bike at all let alone a lot.

+1 on some pictures. While HWY 128 is OK and is on several brevet route to

slightly north of HWY 128 starting in Ukiah. Obviously you will have to
pedal 27 additional miles to Ukiah, but both HWY 253 (Ukiah Boonville Road)
and Orr Springs Road have much lower level of car traffic, and both are

Some comments on gear: The Nitto Noodles (46) gave me more and better hand
positions on the long days, than the M-bars I've been using for as long as
I can remember on all my bikes. I got them pretty closely set just before
the ride, and bar tape and shellac went on the night before we left. I
found and used all the hand positions, and didn't get any numbness. Tektro
 interruptors worked great.

Carrying my off-bike clothes, toolkit, first-aid kit, and toiletries in
the large shopsack atop a basic Nitto rear rack (in a basket) made for
great access and easy carriage into homes/motels, but it also caught the
wind, and made the bike feel generally top-heavy. It also seemed to induce
immediate wobble/shimmy if I took my hands off the bars, even when moving
from drops to hoods. I'm going to get some Ortlieb dry sacks, and a larger
rack, for the next long ride.

I noticed a hanging flap of rubber on the rear JB (green) the morning we
were too take off - the threads were visible but not torn. I decided to
ride on, and deal with either a carcass repair or a new tire when we rode
past an open shop. I did get a new tire in St. Helena, but never mounted
it, the JB is doing fine, and held pressure the entire trip. Those tires
 just roll and roll...

The only breakdown was the seat binder bolt. The two faces of the binder
are not quite parallel (frame was built in 1998 by Joe Starck) and it looks
like the bolt was flexing when turned and experienced final fracture in St.
Helena when I was adjusting my seat. Thankfully, the town's bike shop was
open and they had a bolt and nut that fit. I think a convex washer cup
could help the bolt have a straight shot to the nut.

And speaking of, this was the first time I used bag balm - wow, it's
fantastic. No chafing, no sore spots, a perfect combination with merino
wool skivvies under thin nylon shorts. I don't know why I resisted it for
 so long...

All told, it was great much fun to ride day on day for a week. I got
melancholy taking BART back at the end, but look forward to more long
 rides. Maybe even some camping.

Yellow Jersey is hit or miss. I had a damaged frame re-aligned there. Work
was excellent.

Other times not so much.

Last experience was with a mech who sported metal in his nose, ears, lips,

so much metal in his face.

Did things end well?

No.

I wanted the cotter pins pulled from an old Raleigh Sport so I could work
on the bottom bracket. I got a safety lecture instead. The lecture was
stupid and arrogant. The shop owner sat beside his laptop and laughed at
us.

Have not been back.

Comptche Ukiah Road, Flynn Creek, a little bit of 128, stop at Navarro

could help the bolt have a straight shot to the nut.

[RBW] Re: Freddie Hoffman wisdom

2013-05-27 Thread Michael

They were just starting to scratch the surface of all that info he has
about riding but then would move right on to other topics. Too bad it was
 just a short tv interview.

I think he would have so much to offer to all kinds of cyclists.
One thing about long distance riding and touring is logistics. What do you
do if this happens? , or what do you do if that happens? and I think
Freddie must be a rich source info about how to get yourself through a tour
or other riding.

I bet he could make a great living doing bike touring seminars. Or have his
own bike touring school, so people could learn a lot before heading out
into the unknown. I bet it would save people a lot of trouble on their
trips and make their riding a whole lot more fun and safe.
I am impressed by his economy of motion. He sits so still on the bike. I
flop all over the place just trying to get my lightly loaded bike cruising
along.

I made my way back to Rocky Point Rd and continued the climb up to the
top where it connects with Skyline Blvd, a nice quiet stretch of rolling
road. If I had had more time I would have ventured over to Dixie Mtn for
some gravel rambling but I needed to be home so I headed back to Portland,
dropping off of Skyline at Logie Trail which offers a fast steep twisty

I'm really glad I got out for this ride and did a little exploring.

ridden hard, most parts new at time of purchase, campy shifters are older but
work fine. I love what Rivendell creates but need to cut down to two bikes at
 this time of my life.

Here is a link to several pictures and I can send more if you would like some
 more, http://www.flickr.com/photos/d7mcc/

Waterford built 67cm AHH frame, some chain suck on BB shell and a few paint
 dings but minor
Mark's front rack, plus I have all the factory issued stays and parts, if you
want to mount it on the rear.
 Silver brake set
 Orange velo 45cm hammered fenders
 Sugino 48-36-24, 175mm cranks
 Synchros seatpost and handlebars
 Campy Chorus Ergo 8spd
Campy Rear Racing Triple derailer with Avid shift mate
 Campy Mirage Front derailer
Original Riv Bike box to ship the bike to you.

As most of us have, I mixed and matched parts for my different desires at
different times. The Campy 8spd Chorus Ergo, shifts nicely and work fine and
can be rebuilt (down the road) as opposed to Shimano brifters.

Asking $1,900 plus shipping for the above, I have over $2,600 in parts at
time of purchase invested (not including shifters, seatpost, handlebars,
etc.). New frame is now $2,300. Any questions or offers, just let me know, I
want this bike to find a good home, it's fun to ride. Us tall guys are well
 serviced by Rivendell.

I'm new to this oneline selling business and have more stuff to shed, such as
a Sackville half-loaf bag, and other bike hardware. I'll keep posting
 pictures to my Flickr site.

I ran different wheel sets including an older OpenPro 32 spoke PhilWood 8 spd
freewheel rear and std PhilWood front most recently as well as an OpenPro
Schmidt front generator setup as seen in one of the pictures. I'm open to
discussion about these other parts to an interested party.

I want to offer a bit of detail about what this year's country bike rally
 participants can expect.

We will be following the general course, if not the exact route, of the
Almanzo 100, over two days of riding. Almanzo cue sheets, last I checked,
were available for download. The Almanzo course is mostly gravel, which can
be highly variable between smooth and pavement-like to gnarly loose gravel
with potholes. The terrain is quite hilly by Midwestern standards, but
splitting the route into 2 days and taking a leisurely pace should make it
less of an ordeal. Weather, as always, will be a factor. It's certain that
bikes will get dirty, and possible that rocks will chip the paint. That's
 life.

We will ride as a group and regroup as needed when we get separated by
hills or whatever. That said, this is a ride at your own risk situation.
Any participant is free to opt out for any reason, but there is no
support car to pick you up if that happens. Hopefully we can support each
other and all have a good ride without incident. But stuff happens, and
every rider should accept the inherent risks and have some kind of backup
 plan.

We will pass through a couple small towns where we may be able to eat in
cafes and get groceries. But for the most part, plan to have the day's
 food/water on the bike.

 Any other questions?

Either or is fine and will last a long time. If one lives and/or stores a

apply Boeshield or FrameSaver in the steel bars. The steel ones are not raw
CroMo like frame steel anyways, there is a surface coating on them. The
ends are always filled with shifters, plugs or brake levers anyways, so
where is the moisture going to come from ? Nowhere !

Other reasons ? Steel vs. Al ride and feel characteristics , which are
subjective to the the rider and need no justification.

[RBW] Re: Freddie Hoffman wisdom

2013-05-27 Thread Paul Brodek
Hmmm, maybe my first post here, finally own an actual Riv, know many of you
from ibob CR. Maybe I'll do an intro later, dashing this off quickly
before leaving for a family BBQ.

Freddie is one of my heroes, local to me. I wrenched some of his bikes back
in the day, maybe before they were Ruth E? We might have done a frame-over
for him after he killed one, almost 30yrs ago now, hard to remember
precisely. He used to go on club rides with us, charmingly annoying to be
gasping for breath up a hill with Freddie next to you, spinning like he was
on flatland, talking a mile a minute without breaking a sweat and breathing
like he was sitting in a comfy chair. Freddie doesn't/can't use helmets,
had to leave the club for that reason, kinda sad but that's what liability
insurance forces you to do.

I see him once or twice a year now, when he's looking for camera stuff or
finds an old roll of film at home he needs processed. I try to make sure to
take some piccies.

I tried to attach two pix from '09-'10, but they were too large. I probably
have more recent shots, will look for them later. I just put a small flickr
set of the '09-'10 pix, here:

Woke up early this morning and headed out with Rocky Point Rd on my
mind. After a stop for coffee in St Johns I headed across the bridge and
onto Hwy 30 for some miles (10? 15?) to the bottom of Rocky Point Rd.
Traffic on 30 wasn't bad. There was the usual collection of debris on the
shoulder and a long stretch of rough pavement which is getting prepared for
resurfacing but wasn't really an issue given my 35mm Schwalbe Supremes.

When I lived in SF and would head
out with friends to ride Bolinas Ridge I was always somewhat anxious as I
struggle on the climbs, yo-yoing off the back hoping I wouldn't get dropped

I made my way back to Rocky Point Rd and continued the climb up to the
top where it connects with Skyline Blvd, a nice quiet stretch of rolling
road. If I had had more time I would have ventured over to Dixie Mtn for
some gravel rambling but I needed to be home so I headed back to Portland,
dropping off of Skyline at Logie Trail which offers a fast steep twisty

 Here's some pictures:

I view the Bosco as sort of a specialty bar. It has so much rise and
sweep-back that it either fixes a fit problem (why I got it) or you get a
really upright position. The Alba is not so extreme. It's a really great
bar that would work well on a lot of bikes.

Either or is fine and will last a long time. If one lives and/or stores a
bike in a wet environment,or just worried about it, get a Al version. Or
apply Boeshield or FrameSaver in the steel bars.

Re: [RBW] Re: Freddie Hoffman wisdom

2013-05-27 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Interesting up close news about Freddie; thanks. He's what is called
simple -- and I think that is a very good term since, beside its
privative meaning, it denotes a quality I've noticed in simple people,
that of the virtue of simplicity, precisely, that is, no guile -- no
interior division -- at-one-ment. I remember a little, middled-aged man
in old fashioned proletariat French working garb -- blackish-bron baggy,
worn wool suit, greyish shirt, scuffed black leather shoes -- with ragged
hair cut; short, ugly, poor, and unprepossessing; obviously mentally at a
child's level. He used to turn up to mass at our little traditionalist
Latin chapel in a poor working area of Basseville in lower Quebec, this
back in the very early '80s when I was finishing my graduate studies at
Laval. His face and manner -- carriage and physiognomy -- were lighted with
a simple goodness that struck me then and the memory has remained. God
bless such people.

[RBW] FS: Very small long haul for someone not too tall. (+ the world's luckiest 10 year old)

2013-05-27 Thread iamkeith
Looks like a have a lightly used 42cm Surly Long Haul Trucker frame for
sale, and thought I'd see if anyone here is interested. As you probably
know, this bike was based on the XO-1 and All Rounder designs.I
recently bought this to build up for my 10 year old daughter, who has
expressed a strong interest in doing some bike tours with me. No dad
in his right mind would pass up that opportunity, and this seemed like the
perfect (if not the *only* suitable) bike

...But, before I was able to gather many components, I found AND JUST WON
a 42cm bridgestone XO-1 time capsule on ebay, that's complete and in good
condition. So the Long Haul Trucker has to go. Awesome bike for someone
just north or south of 5'-0 and, obviously, for younger riders. This one
is a couple of years old, in a nice steel blue/grey color. I paid $300 +
shipping for it, but will sell it to someone on the list for a loss. $275
shipped, or make an offer? New frames alone go for $475 before
shipping, and aren't as nice of a color.

Includes frame/fork/headset/bottom bracket/brake hanger/canti brakes/seat
post/post clamp. This size takes 26 wheels but, unlike the X0-1, it has
135mm spacing, so any ol' rim-brake mountain bike wheel set will work.
Long chainstays, so it might even work with 650b, though I have no
evidence to base that on. Great condition, with no dents, rust or even
scratches to speak of. Previous owner did a nice rivish twine wrap on the
driveside chainstay and removed the decals for some reason (I understand
they're available from Surly, though). If there seems to be any interest,
I'll add some photos later. Below are some links to info on the bike.
Lots more via google search.

long stretch of rough pavement which is getting prepared for resurfacing
but wasn't really an issue given my 35mm Schwalbe Supremes.

I made my way back to Rocky Point Rd and continued the climb up to the
top where it connects with Skyline Blvd, a nice quiet stretch of rolling
road. If I had had more time I would have ventured over to Dixie Mtn for
some gravel rambling but I needed to be home so I headed back to Portland,
dropping off of Skyline at Logie Trail which offers a fast steep twisty

[RBW] New shoes for the Atlantis

2013-05-27 Thread john muhl
After trying last summer and missing out I made sure to get at the front of
the queue for the 2013 Super Motos. With 25/35 psi (and the accompanying
cush) it's like riding a different bike and despite the plumpness they are
quite zippy. Only trouble is that the rear slightly rubbed the
kickstand…anyone know if a single legger would have a chance to fit?

[RBW] Re: A fun first tour

2013-05-27 Thread hsmitham
Franklyn ,

I agree with you that the Hwy 253 is a good route to the coast via
Bonneville/ Anderson Valley, Philo and along the Navarro river . It's an
excellent route with low car traffic. Mendocino County has some great back
roads with great scenery..

Andrew, thanks for the ride report. I'm looking forward to riding Mendo one
of these days.

Best,

Hugh

+1 on some pictures. While HWY 128 is OK and is on several brevet route to
the coast, as sort of a mendocino county native, I still prefer two roads
slightly north of HWY 128 starting in Ukiah. Obviously you will have to
pedal 27 additional miles to Ukiah, but both HWY 253 (Ukiah Boonville Road)
and Orr Springs Road have much lower level of car traffic, and both are
more scenic. Granted both have bigger climbs than HWY 128. Given how fast I
drive myself sometimes on HWY 128 on my way to the coast, I'd stay on the
two old stagecoach roads mentioned above. Here is a ride report I wrote
about a short tour my wife and I took last year from Ukiah to the coast:

I rode my LongLow on a not-too-long and not-so-low tour last week, the
first time I've ridden that far, and stayed places overnight, by bicycle.
It looks like we did 340 miles, over six and a half days of riding, on a
mix of roads - some urban, some country lanes, and some coastal highway.
The bicycle performed very well, only one minor break, noted below. Weather
definitely cooperated, it was warm but not enervatingly hot, and the
headwinds we pushed through near the coast turned into tailwinds once we
turned south. The route was from Berkeley, into Napa, Calistoga,
Healdsburg, Cloverdale over to Boonville, out to the coast along the
Navarro river, then south back into Marin and San Francisco:
 http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2183399

Some comments on gear: The Nitto Noodles (46) gave me more and better
hand positions on the long days, than the M-bars I've been using for as
long as I can remember on all my bikes. I got them pretty closely set just
before the ride, and bar tape and shellac went on the night before we left.
I found and used all the hand positions, and didn't get any numbness.
 Tektro interruptors worked great.

I got
melancholy taking BART back at the end, but look forward to more long
 rides. Maybe even some camping.

recently bought this to build up for my 10 year old daughter, who has
expressed a strong interest in doing some bike tours with me. No dad
in his right mind would pass up that opportunity, and this seemed like the
perfect (if not the *only* suitable) bike

...But, before I was able to gather many components, I found AND JUST WON
a 42cm bridgestone XO-1 time capsule on ebay, that's complete and in good

Below are some links to info on the bike.

onto Hwy 30 for some miles (10? 15?) to the bottom of Rocky Point Rd.
Traffic on 30 wasn't bad. There was the usual collection of debris on the
shoulder and a long stretch of rough pavement which is getting prepared
 for
resurfacing but wasn't really an issue given my 35mm Schwalbe Supremes.

I started heading up Rocky Point Rd and thinking about the first time
I rode it, maybe 6 and a half years ago. I was on my Lemond with a low
 gear
of 39/25 and was wearing bibs and on SPDs. I had no idea what to expect
from the climb and wasn't looking forward to it at all. Today I was
 wearing
some shorts, wool t-shirt and platform pedals. My low gear on my Hilsen
 is
26/28. I rode the first third of the climb in 36/28 which was fine but
there's a spot where the road cranks up and I dropped into my granny,
slowed down and just took in the scenery which is a mixture of clearcut
 and
dense forest. The road gets very little traffic so it's quite a pleasant
 climb.

I've really grown to love climbing. When I lived in SF and would head
out with friends to ride Bolinas Ridge I was always somewhat anxious as I
struggle on the climbs, yo-yoing off the back hoping I wouldn't get
 dropped
to hard. I moved up here, started doing a lot of riding by myself, got
turned onto Rivendell and learned to appreciate low gearing and a
 leisurely
pace. I actually wish the Rocky Point Climb was longer.

In an effort to enjoy the climb a little more I pulled onto one of
the logging roads and explored a couple of arteries. Nothing seemed to
offer an alternative route back to Rocky Point Rd but I did discover some
nice singletrack which I'll explore sometime soon in the future.

I made my way back to Rocky Point Rd and continued the climb up to
the top where it connects with Skyline Blvd, a nice quiet stretch of
rolling road. If I had had more time I would have ventured over to Dixie
Mtn for some gravel rambling but I needed to be home so I headed back to
Portland, dropping off of Skyline at Logie Trail which offers a fast
 steep
twisty descent. Logie Trail is quite narrow and the pavement is in bad
shape. Making the descent even more treacherous was a fair amount of
 gravel
spread across the road, I guess in an attempt to patch potholes. I made
 it
down without incident and headed back to Portland, stopping at a 7-11 for
some V8 and snacks as I was feeling a bonk coming on.

I'm really glad I got out for this ride and did a little exploring.

Re: [RBW] Rocky Point Rd ramble.

2013-05-27 Thread dougP
Better you should stand on the pedals, my son.

Anne's right about the gradients. Anything with a Cal Trans Hwy number was
built for motor vehicle traffic. Not only do they have to be able to get
up the hill, heavy trucks have to be able to descend safely (the cafe on
Foothill at the bottom of Angeles Crest is exhibit A; gets wiped out every
couple of decades). So anything steeper than 6% won't go for too long.
Over 10% grades will be older highways (eastern US) or roads built just for
access to some point such as the logging access roads, the radio towers on
Saddleback or Poly Canyon (SLO) or Dante's View in Death Valley.

The Zen approach is a good idea. I play a little game of how long to the
top? estimating time to summit based on current speed distance. A while
back I did a climb where at 5 miles from the top I was doing 5 MPH, so
another hour. The next time I played, I was down to 4 miles per hour with
4 miles to go. You can follow the progression, but I did eventually get
there (whew!).

Umm... Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Highway 108, Sonora Pass. I've only
climbed the easy east side, with its extended 15% grades.

Ebbetts Pass/Pacific Grade, Highway 4, has its moments on the east side.
I'm trying to remember what possessed me to agree to sign up to ride it
this June, as part of the Sierra to the Sea.

In contrast, the southern California passes I've done are not too bad. I'm
sure there are some horrors, but Mt. Laguna is a pussycat. The only thing
my group disliked was the cohort of flies that accompanied each of us as we
climbed, courtesy, I think, of the cattle that graze there.

[RBW] Re: Seattle vs Portland Country Bike Rumble - June 1st

2013-05-27 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
It sounds like this coming weekend has got more than it's fair share of
Rivendell type rides... Nice.

Anyone in the Northwest is welcome to come out for the *The Seattle vs
Portland Country Bike Rumble i*n the Cispus River Valley.

We have the *Bear Group Site* reserved at the *North Fork Campground* and
the weather forecast is in our favor. Even though it's unlikely we'll fill
the group site, it made sense to get it because of the additional car
fees we would have been paying at regular sites. Plus this way we can camp
together but still have room to spread out. We certainly have room if
anyone wants to bring a spouse or a friend.

The main event (the ride) will be Saturday afternoon. Pedals will start
spinning when it seems that everyone who's going to show up is there and
ready... maybe 12 noon... hopefully no later than 1. We'll play it by ear.

As previously discussed, there's more snow than was initially anticipated.
There is 4+ feet of snow at 4000ft so we'll be confined to the valleys,
which limits our options to ride a loop. Our route will be out-and-back.
The Campground is at the confluence of the North Fork Cispus River and the
main trunk of the Cispus River. There is a road up each fork that we can
ride to the snow line. Road 22 along the North
Forkhttp://ridewithgps.com/routes/2572440is shorter and has a more pronounced
flat-for-a-ways then steep-for-a-ways
thing about it. Road 23 is more evenly gradual and goes to Babyshoe
Passhttp://ridewithgps.com/routes/2572444,
but we'll be stopped by snow well before the pass.

The Portland crew will be providing a *spaghetti dinner* Saturday night
after the ride. That is the only thing provided on this trip... BYO camping
gear, eating utensils, food, etc. We'll take up a collection to buy a few
bundles of firewood.

Directions to the North Fork Campground
HERE.https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Randle,+WAdaddr=North+Fork+Campground,+Randle,+WAhl=ensll=46.451578,-121.787567sspn=0.237484,0.615921geocode=FacSxgIdfhS7-CkJnNe0ls-WVDHkD2Q9TMhsEw%3BFUTMxAIdEam9-CHb_coVY3uYICl1p5xR0NyWVDHb_coVY3uYIAoq=Randle,+WAt=hmra=lsz=12
 When
I made the reservation the CG map made it look like the group sites are
away from the main campground loop. I imagine there'll be signs.

If I forgot anything or you have other Qs, post them here or send me a
message. Looking forward to meeting + riding with everyone on Saturday.

Since we have the group site, there'll be plenty of parking if anyone wants

[RBW] I raced my Riv in a mountain bike race

2013-05-27 Thread Alex Moll
Ski to Sea (aka the Bellingham Olympics) is a 93 mile, 7-leg relay race
from Mount Baker to Bellingham Bay. My principal and a group of teacher
buddies have been doing this event for a few years. XC Ski-downhill
ski-run-road bike-canoe-XC bike-kayak. Their mountain biker decided to
retire, so I was asked to join the team. The mountain bike leg is about 13
miles long and mixed terrain and surfaces, but not extremely technical.
They started allowing cyclocross bikes a couple years ago, and though the
mountain bike would be more comfortable in a lot of spots, the 'cross bikes
are faster overall. They also decided to change the name of the leg to
Cross-Country Bike.

Country Bike? Sounds like a job for my Riv! I have a couple of mountain
bikes, but knew the Riv would be faster overall.

I pre-rode the course on Saturday with JB greens. What fun! The tires
worked great on the fairly dry course. Alas, it rained all night, and all
day Sunday - which required a last minute switch to 'cross mud tires. The
Michelin Tires were labelled 700x30, but actually measured 34mm (pleasant
surprise!) The Silver sidepulls had plenty of mud clearance, and worked
fine in the muck. I did have one mishap fairly early in the event - I
leaned over to far on wet pavement, lost the front and laid it down.
Luckily, it was a slow/tight/technical 90 degree turn. That did cause me to
be a bit more cautious, and possibly the minute I needed to crack Top 100
glory.

So, the bike did great and the engine wasn't as weak as I'd feared. I
finished 170 out of nearly 500.

[RBW] Memorial Day Hunqapillar Ride

2013-05-27 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I did one of my favorite rides today, Honolulu to Haleiwa. It's about 70
miles one way. The weather was gorgeous but the trades wins kept the fun
down for the first few miles till I turned the corner on the island and
started picking it up as a bit of a tailwind.

The Hunq performed wonderfully. The climbs seemed easier than ever.

I don't take many pictures anymore (as I do this ride several times a
year), but I did take my 'obligatory' Kahuku Sugar Mills shot with my bike
in front a really big gear.

[RBW] Re: Seattle vs Portland Country Bike Rumble - June 1st

2013-05-27 Thread charlie
Sounds fun, any idea how much it costs for a campsite etc. ? So I imagine a
9-10:00 a.m. show for set up etc. Do you think your average old, fat
cyclist could get away with riding a Simple One or are we in for some real
climbing fun? I hear the weather will be in the low 70's Saturday (subtract
a few degrees the higher you go). Night time temps will probably be in the
40's.

On Monday, May 27, 2013 8:16:12 PM UTC-7, Andy Smitty Schmidt wrote:

Forkhttp://ridewithgps.com/routes/2572440is shorter and has a more
 pronounced flat-for-a-ways then steep-for-a-ways
thing about it. Road 23 is more evenly gradual and goes to Babyshoe
 Passhttp://ridewithgps.com/routes/2572444,
but we'll be stopped by snow well before the pass.

The Portland crew will be providing a *spaghetti dinner* Saturday night
after the ride. That is the only thing provided on this trip... BYO camping
gear, eating utensils, food, etc. We'll take up a collection to buy a few
 bundles of firewood.

Directions to the North Fork Campground
 HERE.https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=Randle,+WAdaddr=North+Fork+Campground,+Randle,+WAhl=ensll=46.451578,-121.787567sspn=0.237484,0.615921geocode=FacSxgIdfhS7-CkJnNe0ls-WVDHkD2Q9TMhsEw%3BFUTMxAIdEam9-CHb_coVY3uYICl1p5xR0NyWVDHb_coVY3uYIAoq=Randle,+WAt=hmra=lsz=12
  When
I made the reservation the CG map made it look like the group sites are
away from the main campground loop. I imagine there'll be signs.

If I forgot anything or you have other Qs, post them here or send me a
message. Looking forward to meeting + riding with everyone on Saturday.

[RBW] Re: Clement MSO 40mm 60 tpi on a Hunq

2013-05-27 Thread Pierre
Hi Christian,

Great timing. New bike on its way, so I'll be converting my Hilsen for dirt
road riding. I am putting the Clement MSO on my short list.

You put They're good combination of fine on pavement and really nice on
gravel (that would be one end of the spectrum).

Imagine the other end good combination of fine on gravel and really nice
on paved road, any 40mm(-ish) tires would fit that description? Something
like 40mm Cypres?

Pierre

 Hi everyone,

I've been reading the thread on tires and someone mentioned the Clement
MSO 40. Coincidentally, I just rode mine today, took pics, and planned to
comment on them. Pics are here (and in the RBW Flickr group):
 http://www.flickr.com/photos/cwmcmillen/sets/72157633184218583/. They'e
the most recent ones in the set.

I like the tires. I weigh b/w 170-175 and on the Hunq I've had:

--50mm Duremes: dead, heavy, overkill for me.

 --32mm Paselas: they're 32 Paselas. What can I say? Great all-around
 tire.

32mm Grand Bois Cypres: Amazing. But then my favorite is the GB Hetre on
my 650B; the Cypres are similar. A little too narrow but still remarkably
 awesome on gravel.

--40mm Clement MSO: Really nice. Running them about 35-40 front; 40-45
rear (I'm not that precise about it). In terms of non-paved roads, they
did not perform, in the conditions I ride in (see pics in the link and many
others in photostream), any better than my Hetres. But then I cannot run
Hetres on my Hunq unless I convert to 650B---h? This is not a
criticism; just my observation. Maybe I felt more secure going fast
downhill? Who knows. In any event, I really liked them. They're good
combination of fine on pavement and really nice on gravel.

 Best wishes,

 Christian

[RBW] Okay to Post Riv Items for Sale Here?

2013-05-27 Thread Checkerboard
Hi Folks,

My daily driver is the Homer Hilsen, which is the finest bike I've ever ridden
or owned. I bought the Sam Hillborn for my son's 21st birthday, and he's riding
it daily in San Fran.

I don't know if it's Kosher here, but I have a complete set of almost
brand-new Rivendell components (everything but the frame) to sell. So, my
question- does the Forum allow for the advertisement/ sale of bike components?
If so, I'd like to compose a message with pics and fill you all in... if not,
no problem, there's always Craigslist.

Thanks very much, Peter in Orinda
