No flats in a hundred miles! In other news: the Ram feels really nice -- as good as my customs. I continue to tweak the saddle-bar-height relationship -- we're looking at about 1 difference right now, and that could decrease -- but with our warm weather winds I've been riding recently 8 miles at a stretch into headwinds and it feels quite good. I use no gloves, but the very sensitive heel of my left hand is surprisingly comfortable. I may have to raise the brake bodies a wee bit on the bar's curve. I think I've got the saddle where it needs to be -- perhaps a wee bit too high, but the position is the wonderful (and on some bikes, elusive) perfect spot where you feel you are perfectly far behind the bb so that there is no awkwardness either while spinning fast or while torquing hard to gain momentum. The 7-speed Dura Ace system, in indexed mode, requires an annoying fine tune between over- and under-shifting: reminds me why I've not used indexing for 20+ years until now -- hell, even derailleurs are newish. I use it now because, dammit, I have a 7400 indexing system and it *will* work for me. There is a very mild rattle once a crank rotation that must come from the rear derailleur because it's not from the front; but it's mild enough that I attribute it to default derailleur behavior and not the indexing. I find that, unladen, the Ram cruises nicely in the 74 gear and that the 70 gear feels light, proof to me of pedaling efficiency, something I don't find with every bike. With some bikes, ~75 feels overgeared. I assume this has to do with very many things, but perhaps among them are the tires and the fit/position. Funny, I tend to do most of my riding in the 16-17-18 range: 74, 70, and 66, with a drop to 60 for steeper uphills. The Ram has carried up to 47 lb in the rear (Fly) with just a bit of stress, and it handles rear loads of 35 lb without any qualms. Overall, for me, that very nice combination of unladen spriteliness and rear load capacity. I managed to bust one of the Y struts holding the single rack strut to the seatstay braze ons, so I scavenged another single strut from the Logo to replace it as shown. The other seatstay braze on can hold a bracket for a rear light. I think I'm going to convert it into a fixed gear (though that will mean

[RBW] Cracked XD Crank Arm ..... And the Earth Didn't Stop Rotating :)
I noticed this strange squiggly line coming from the drive side pedal hole today, while may miles from home ! Oh well I thought, nothing to do really, if it breaks it breaks if not not. It didn't. When I got home I removed the pedal to check if i could see the crack in the threads, but could not. So I sanded off the anodizing at the spot until I could see it no more. I hopped back on the bike and pushed down with all my weight on the pedal, and lo and behold, the crack line reappeared . Oyil well ! Funny thing is, it's not such a big deal ! I have another bike to ride and I'll order another crank. Pretty simple . These are the 152mm XD's, which no one here likely uses anyway. [RBW] Re: Quickest bar tape goo removal chemical?
Finish Line citrus degreaser/solvent. Smells good, works great, and you won't have to worry quite as much about the toxicity of the chemical. Historical footnote: In the questionably good-old-days I used to use a chemical called trichloroethelyne, sold by the company who manufactured it under the name of Carbo-sol. It was also commonly known by those who worked in the petrochemical industry as well as the business sectors who were the major users of it (printing, etc.) as simply trike. It worked much, much faster than anything I've ever seen since and was the default go-to product for removing the old glue from tubular tire rims. 'Course, it contained fluorocarbons, which it the main reason it was discontinued in the last decade, plus it was hazardous to use - the molecule chain was small enough to be absorbed into the skin easily where it went directly to the central nervous system. [RBW] New to Albas after drops/staches...did this happen to you?
Sitting totally upright on Albas with my saddle in the ususal KOPS position that I had with 'staches and drops, I feel like my saddle has moved forward, but it hasn't (I checked). Feels like I am out in front of the pedals now when pedaling - not directly over them like I felt with the low drops position with KOPS. I guess when you move your weight around to a different position a lot changes. Nothing bad, I'll just move the saddle back if I feel the need. But for now keeping the saddle the same as long as nothing hurts. Just a curious thing. Did you feel this when you switched to totally upright after being used to a low drops position? I am enjoying the bolt upright position a lot. Nice views. No neck/hand issues either so far. I hope it will make it more comfy to wear layers in the winter. With drops, clothes get scrunched between my belly and thighs. Upright really opens up the torso. Its a nice feeling. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet
From rivbike.com: Our No Warranty Frame Warranty It may seem odd for a company that makes such reliable frames to not have a standard instant freebie replacement - warranty, but hold on. Just because something that's defective is likely to break, doesn't mean anything that breaks is defective. Even superbly designed, artfully made steel bikes ridden according to design intent can break. We know that, and go to great lengths to prevent it. We're skilled, experienced non-defective designers. We use top-notch, proven, non-defective materials. Within the few but real constraints pricing imposes, we're selective about who builds our frames. When it comes to caring about weight and shooting for lightness, we're super conservative. It's not far off the mark to say we don't care about weight, and it's absolutely true that we never compromise a frame to make it lighter. A good frame weighs what it ought to weigh. After all that, sometimes a frame breaks, and that's no more proof of a defect than a broken window is proof of defective glass. It is impossible to tell the history of the frame. It may be impossible for even its owner to know it. Sometimes even good things break, and anybody, or any company who doesn't acknowledge that is not being honest. All that said, broken frames are rare. Crash damage, and running into garages with bikes on the roof rack are way, way more common. Tell us your frame's story. We may fix it for nothing, but you pay the freight. Or we may charge a fee for the fix. It is at our discretion, but we're not your enemy, and you are our friend. We keep that in mind, always. The great thing about steel frames is they can be fixed. In many cases, the fixed frame can be reinforced so that it's stronger than the original. You want a fresh start, but a fresh start with a beefed up frame can be even better. A thicker tube. An extra tube. Whatever it takes, we can do it. In almost all cases, a fixed frame needs new paint. We'll work with our local painter and get it to you at no profit. A repair may cost nothing or nine hundred dollars. It all depends. In any case, we feel beholden to original owners only. No other warranty (or non-warranty) is implied, so don't go inferring any. But no matter how you came upon your frame, we are happy to advise you on how to get your frame repaired at a reasonable cost. We want your bike back in action, too. Fair enough? Re: [RBW] Brooks Cambium C-17 First Look
I worked in a Vegan restaurant for a long time (a lot of fixed gear bikes) and the owner made it a point not to make the non-vegans feel like they were baby killing satan worshippers. I would imagine the smart people at Brooks would do the same and not market this as a this saddle will make you sleep better at night kind of thing. I see nowhere on the site where Brooks is advertising this as a Vegan saddle. Is some part of the Cambium made in china? Did some child worker slave to make it? Maybe that should be more important. Chris: Sorry to hear about the breakage. That had to have ruined an otherwise good ride. [RBW] Re: Cracked Ramboullet
I saw your bike when you brought it in, that crack looked like what you might see on one of those belt-driven bikes, with the slot for the belt to slip through. ;-) But from my quick look, the grain on the crack looked very fine, no large crystals or strange plastic yield. I bet it's very easy to repair, and probably with a stouter dropout than came originally. - Andrew, Berkeley On Monday, June 17, 2013 8:09:57 AM UTC-7, chris wrote: I was on a ride last Saturday in the Gold Country in CA and the chain stay broke through on the drive side at the rear dropout. I assume the hostel can accommodate an equal number of women. The unknown is bicycle security. Bicycles are not allowed inside the building. They claim to have an area outside that is safe. I like the hostel option, but don't know anything about this one. If it's in town (yet not next to the rail line) that seems like a plus (Firestone, Firestone, Firestone...). If there's any interest in that, maybe we can find out if they can offer a group discount even. Although $25 a night aint too bad.
