[RBW] Big Sur Tour

2013-06-23 Thread hsmitham

My Brother Bruce and I have been planning a cyclotour from San Francisco to
Paso Robles for months and all the planning paid off. On June 14th Bruce
picked me up in LA loaded up the bikes and headed for Paso Robles where we
were planning to catch the Amtrak coast starlight to Oakland.

The Coast Star Light was 20 minutes late and when it arrived the chief
conductor said we could not bring our bikes aboard as we had not made
reservations for boxes. If we had all we’d have needed to do was remove the
pedals and loosen the handlebars and roll it into the box provided.
Needless to say we were in a bind, what to do? It was Friday on graduation
weekend and 5:30pm most of the rental car establishments were closing and
the ones that were open had no cars to rent especially one way. We rented
a Camry in SLO for $100 a day drove back to Paso and dropped off our car
stuffed the tour bikes in the Camry and make it to the Clarion Hotel in
Oakland at midnight my front fender took a hit and was bent awkwardly.

The following day we jumped on BART and headed to RivHQ. How can you be so
close to the epicenter of relaxed common sense cycling and not stop in? It
was mandatory. We made some repairs and final purchases met with Will,
Sean, Scott, Harry the man behind it all Grant who was busy on a photo
shoot preparing for a BW catalogue. Harry Scott helped us Google map a
route over to Pigeon Point Lighthouse and Grant humored me with a pose with
the loaded Hilsen and said “the Hilsen’s not really a loaded tour bike”.
But he felt it would handle just fine. We finally made our way back to the
BART albeit late and headed for San Bruno. From there we promptly got
confused as the Beta bicycle map feature lead us along a bikeway of
enumerable (Lesson carry a map) turns and eventually lead us up to a closed
bridge near Crystal Springs Reservoir. Fortunately we met a local cyclist
who got us straightened out and we were on our way to Half Moon Bay via the
92 (note to self never take this route again) which had little to no
shoulder lots of traffic and was windy.

We stopped in Half Moon Bay refueled with sandwiches and continued to our
Light house destination for the evening.

The next day was our big mileage day 70 miles to the Marina area just north
of Monterey via the farm lands of Castroville and Watsonville. The Ramada
provided us with warm showers great beds and a breakfast in the morning
where we loaded up with instant oatmeal and peanut butter for our two days
in the Sur. We both agreed that night’s pizza “The Luau” was the best
ever!

Our third day of riding took us through Monterey and Caramels 17 mile drive
which if by car there was a fee and if by bicycle well we just rolled
through the gate another benefit of being on a bicycle. I’ve got to say
that this stretch is amazing as there are no large cliffs and reminds me of
La Jolla in San Diego. We made a pit stop at the grocery store at the south
end of Carmel to load up on supplies, Dutch Crunch bread, fresh fruit and
other essentials. One of my fender nuts had fallen off and there was an
Ace Hardware store where I conveniently got a replacement. We continued on
for another 26 miles to the Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park hike bike camp
located a bit away from the water but none the less beautiful as it was in
a Redwood grove and $5 per person, warm showers and Velo-culture abounded,
it was like riding into a cyclo city just awesome! We met so many great
people.

Next morning we made our way toward Kirk Creek Camp which was situated near
the water and a bit exposed. The thing was that the hike and bike area had
been overtaken by car campers as they liked the location and we were
relegated to a typical car camp spot, that didn’t dampen our mood as how
can you be upset while in the Sur? The camp host felt bad and gave us a
wheel barrel of wood and Jacob from Colorado built a great fire. We camped
with a couple of teachers from Colorado Jacob ( Can’t remember his wife’s
name will update this later), a couple from Belgium Davie Rose who have
been on tour around the world for 9 months and two fellows from Toulouse
France Marc and Sebastian.

On our second to last day of riding we rolled refreshed South towards our
next destination Cambria by the sea. We stopped off at Ragged Point for a
rest and saw all our fellow cyclotourist friends and wished them well on
their next overnight at San Simeon Creek campsite I really wanted to camp
another night as the wide open feeling was magnificent, but we had
reservations and well that was that! The Bridge Street Inn was in my humble
opinion the best I have ever experienced, the proprietor Jan was gracious
and her intern Lauralie from France kept a clean house and provided a great
atmosphere with great conversation. The next morning we awoke to have
breakfast provided by the Inn to get us on our way in style.

So we headed out of Cambria and climbed up to the Cabrillo

[RBW] 2013 Summer Solstice - Staunton River Battlefield to Red Hill Loop Ride

2013-06-23 Thread meade anderson
http://www.flickr.com/photos/julianmeade/sets/72157634266766597/

The ride was a 63 mile loop on the Solstice starting from the Staunton River
Battlefield up the south side of the Staunton/Roanoke River crossing on the
historic Clarkton Bridge then on to Red Hill, Patrick Henry's last home.
Red Hill is well maintained and a beautiful spot for lunch and a nap on the
picnic table in the shade of an ancient oak. Located in the front yard is
the National Champion Osage Orange tree which is amazing in itself and the
fact located adjacent to the house it survived the 1919 fire that destroyed
the original structure. I returned on the north side of the river following
the more rural and gravel roads (and its hard to be more rural than the
southside) most if not all of which are well over 150 years old. The final
crossing of the river was at the Staunton River Battle Rail Bridge which as
the Clarkton Bridge is open only for non-motorized traffic. This area along
the river basin was once thriving and wealthy, now has somewhat of an
abandoned feel.tobacco is waning, the factories located in the towns are for
the most part closed, the small farms don't cut it, and many folks simply
moved away, simply a bygone era.many of the fine older homes which are still
standing and maintained are not visible from the roads.I could have and
should have taken a ton more shots. At times I would ride for a 5 mile
stretch and never see a car or person.and along the gravel roads it was
sometimes 3 plus miles between houses.a great area for cycling but its
definitely BYOB.(bike, beer, breakfast, lunch, etc)

Re: [RBW] Re: Water!

2013-06-23 Thread Patrick Moore
Apparently the Vangal was a re-branded French import brought in by a couple
of Americans, with last names Van... and ...gal, back in the '70s; his was
the top o' line model (Champion?) and I have to say that the lug thinning
and brazing detail looked as good to cursory eyes as that on my Curt-built
custom Riv. And he had polished up very nicely the Stronglight 99 and
various odd bits with which he had built it up. Very pretty. Riv-ish
content: he was riding no-retention.

(I am always impressed and a bit amused by how shiny many people keep their
bikes. It certainly makes them look good! Mine are well maintained, but not
often washed.)

The owner has a website and gave me his card, and I'll try to track down a
photo and post it -- he is Bob Hanson from the CR list, btw. We met halfway
on one of ABQ's many bike trails to swap an orphan 99 left arm for a ditto
Pro 5 Vis ditto.

The Vangal (Champion model?) is certainly Rivish, if not Rivendellian. (Or
is that vice-versa?).

The very early '80s commercially pure, standard-tubing-widthed, titanium
Sumitomo is said to have very, very pretty tigg'ing -- even the crown to
steerer transition, he said, is so perfect that you can't see the joint.
I'll try to post that one, too.

What a fun ramble! I had no idea osage orange could get that big. Wow. When
I needed custom walking sticks to get around (before discovering barefoot
and proprioception), my huge 4 pound each bludgers were made of osage
orange because of it's strength and flexibility (they replaced a pair of
something held together by a steel rod which I'd snapped). Now I'm curious
where those have gotten to.

Meade, what a great ride. It looks and sounds like it moody and
introspective.
63 miles/100K is quite the perfect distance to take up a day, but not leave
you terribly worn out.

The ride was a 63 mile loop on the Solstice starting from the Staunton
River Battlefield up the south side of the Staunton/Roanoke River crossing
on the historic Clarkton Bridge then on to Red Hill, Patrick Henry’s last
home. Red Hill is well maintained and a beautiful spot for lunch and a nap
on the picnic table in the shade of an ancient oak. Located in the front
yard is the National Champion Osage Orange tree which is amazing in itself
and the fact located adjacent to the house it survived the 1919 fire that
destroyed the original structure. I returned on the north side of the
river following the more rural and gravel roads (and its hard to be more
rural than the southside) most if not all of which are well over 150 years
old. The final crossing of the river was at the Staunton River Battle Rail
Bridge which as the Clarkton Bridge is open only for non-motorized
traffic. This area along the river basin was once thriving and wealthy,
now has somewhat of an abandoned feel…tobacco is waning, the factories
located in the towns are for the most part closed, the small farms don’t
cut it, and many folks simply moved away, simply a bygone era…many of the
fine older homes which are still standing and maintained are not visible
from the roads…I could have and should have taken a ton more shots. At
times I would ride for a 5 mile stretch and never see a car or person…and
along the gravel roads it was sometimes 3 plus miles between houses…a great
area for cycling but its definitely BYOB…(bike, beer, breakfast, lunch, etc)

Re: [RBW] Re: Big Sur Tour

2013-06-23 Thread Anne Paulson
Sounds like a great trip! Touring the Pacific Coast in the warmer
months is always a bike party.

Another lesson: Check with local cyclists if possible. Locals would
probably not have routed you on Highway 92. King's Mountain or Old La
Honda would have been recommended; it's possible to ride 92, as you
discovered, but better alternatives exist. In Northern California,
highways are not called THE N. They are just called N, so for
example Highway 92 is called Highway 92.

About the train: Cyclists need reservations for the bike on the Coast
Starlight now? When I have ridden it with my bike, I have arrived
early, boxed my bike and paid for it, and then given it to the baggage
people with no trouble. I've never made a reservation beforehand, just
arrived at the station by bike and boxed the bike (in a box supplied
by Amtrak). Is it a new policy that bikes need reservations?

[RBW] Brooks Saddle tension lesson

2013-06-23 Thread BSWP
My wife's new Brooks came with a wrench, and as one of my saddles had been
sagging a bit, I did the very natural thing - I tightened it up! Wouldn't
you?

Ah, but in taking away the sag, I made the seat much, much firmer, in fact
too firm, a point that was driven home to me on yesterday's Brevet - my
ischial tuberosties were not happy with the newly-hard seat.

Lesson for me: A sagging leather seat is also a seat that is absorbing
impact from potholes and pavement seams. It's okay to tighten the seat a
bit, but not too much, lest I turn it into a frat house paddle board.

[RBW] Overheard on Sierra to the Sea

2013-06-23 Thread Anne Paulson
Last week I was on the (very fine) Sierra to the Sea ride put on by
Almaden Cycle Touring Club. It was tons of fun. Rivendell was
represented by me, and also JimD. The first night, I hopefully
snuggled my British racing green Roadeo next to JimD's orange custom,
hoping that in the morning I'd see a little red Betty Foy, but alas, I
was disappointed. That was pretty much the only disappointment of the
entire trip, though. The food was super and plentiful, and somehow
ACTC managed to route us across the entire state of California on
fabulous roads.

Some of those roads were rough: Dogtown Road in the Sierra foothills,
some Delta roads and the fabulous Coleman Valley Road in Sonoma County
spring to mind. My Roadeo with Rolly Polys purred like a kitten. The
Jack Browns might have even been a better choice.

Overheard:

Rider #1: My neck gets so sore sometimes when I'm riding, I have to
look down for a while instead of looking ahead.

Rider #2: Me too, even though I know it's not that safe.

Me: Have you tried raising your handlebars?

Rider #1: ?? You mean tilting them?

Me: No, just moving them up higher.

Rider #1: (puzzled) I don't think you can do that on my bike.

Jim Warren showed up to say hello and ask about the ride, on his Hunqa
with the Big Bens. The two riders with me were obviously appalled at
the the idea that someone might try the ride with Big Bens. (But
they're so heavy!) In fact, Big Bens would be great.

In addition to the idea that bikes need to be shod with 23 mm or 25 mm
tires, a number of the Sierra to the Sea riders apparently subscribed
to the common belief that extra clothing, food and equipment weigh
less if you carry them in a backpack or in jammed pockets, than if you
carry them on the bike. Saddlebags and front bags were not much in
evidence.

One day we rode from Calistoga to the Russian River. The optional
route included Sweetwater Springs, one of those roads that is terrific
in almost every possible way: deserted, with oak grasslands, then a
secluded little valley, then a (steep) climb up through redwoods. The
regular route was not too shabby either, but I chose the Sweetwater
option. On the way up I passed a couple of other riders walking. I
understand the appeal of compact doubles if compact doubles give you
low enough gears. And for a lot of people (who are stronger than me or
lighter than me or both) compact doubles do work. But riders who are
walking the steep hills, or riding up them with some knee-destroying
cadence in the 30s or 40s, need lower gears. It's sad to hear, The
guy in the bike shop told me... when the guy in the bike shop
obviously told the rider the wrong thing.

I highly recommend Sierra to the Sea. Try it for yourself next year and see!

[RBW] Swift Industries s24o, Seattle/Bainbridge Island

2013-06-23 Thread Christopher Chen
I took the train from Portland to Seattle Friday to make some new friends.

The weather was fantastic--clear skies and warm days. We crossed Puget
Sound on the Bainbridge Island ferry, and rode along the western short to
Fay Bainbridge park. There was firewood and whisky, and a great time.

The next morning, the whole crew rolled down to downtown Winslow for coffee
and a snack--three of us stayed on the island, making a loop towards the
eastern part of the island, through some nice hills and farmland.
Absolutely wonderful setting. We achieved our objective, which was a cheese
shop in Lynwood Center.

The ride back took us on a short detour on some gravel that winds its way
through side yards and the shoreline. Excellent!

I personally rode around Seattle for a few hours before my train back to
Portland, and soaked my feet in Lake Union.

Re: [RBW] Big Bens on the Atlantis?

2013-06-23 Thread ted
Per the RBW geometry chart, the 26 wheeled Alantis has clearance for a
2.35 tire.
The big ben being labeled 2.15 (and ~2.1 actual) that leaves ~.2 for
fenders. At least up front the Atlantis seems to have abundant vertical
tire clearance. If the back is similar in that regard it seems like the big
bens would probably fit.
Since you have the tires it's likely worth it to just mount them and try
the fit.

[RBW] Re: Brooks Saddle tension lesson

2013-06-23 Thread Ron Mc
actually, I backed off my daughter's new saddle a bit

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bK-zx2_ire8/UcdFwMMn1dI/BCY/K9t_0_JrOlw/s1600/aaaP6230001.JPG

the idea being to make it as soft as it can be while she's breaking it in,
and will tighten later as needed.

My Selle AnAtomica has been crazy, though - it has really sagged in the
first 150 miles (most in the first 8) requiring frequent tightening. I
heard that need is supposed to slow down, but if it does wear out, I'll
replace it with a Brooks.

On Sunday, June 23, 2013 12:39:08 PM UTC-5, BSWP wrote:

My wife's new Brooks came with a wrench, and as one of my saddles had been

Ah, but in taking away the sag, I made the seat much, much firmer, in fact
too firm, a point that was driven home to me on yesterday's Brevet - my
ischial tuberosties were not happy with the newly-hard seat.

Lesson for me: A sagging leather seat is also a seat that is absorbing
impact from potholes and pavement seams. It's okay to tighten the seat a
bit, but not too much, lest I turn it into a frat house paddle board.

snuggled my British racing green Roadeo next to JimD's orange custom,
hoping that in the morning I'd see a little red Betty Foy, but alas, I
was disappointed.

Re: [RBW] Re: Water!

2013-06-23 Thread Ron Mc
Even from this hop monger, Fat Tire is kind of a no-brainer. A nice citrus
note that makes it a good summertime brew. Sour trappist ales really hit
the spot when you're feeling dehydrated. Obviously a lot of alcohol is a
dumb idea, but a beer gives you carbs, makes you take a rest - just make
sure you drink enough water to hydrate beyond the (small portion of)
alcohol.
If you can't think of a better place to ride, ride 15 miles to the brewpub,
have a light lunch, drink a beer, head for the barn.

Another lesson: Check with local cyclists if possible. Locals would

discovered, but better alternatives exist.

[RBW] Re: Standard Moustache on Clearance Bits page at RBW. Get it while you can.

2013-06-23 Thread Joe Bernard
Yep. I first saw it on a Japanese-market Bridgestone Monte Carlo in
Bicycling magazine around 1990/91. The bike was aimed at the youth ride to
school market, and Japan had decreed that dropbars were too aggressive
for young folks. The Moustache Bar was a drop modified to skirt that law.
Grant modified *that.*

My buy/sell story is a simple matter of space and economics. I bought JL's
Ram recently, then picked up a Riv frame I've always wanted - a Bleriot -

confused. After the saddle began to sag a bit, I tightened it as per
instructions. After the next couple rides, I noticed that the tension bolt

happened. And again, etc. So, does one just keep a close eye on the bolt

the saddle self destructs? Any advice most appreciated.

Re: [RBW] WTB: Rivendell Rambouillet

2013-06-23 Thread Patrick Moore
You are like my brother Peter, ex-LA, who buys, builds, rides, and flips
dozens of bikes every year: he has a vast, vast experience of marques and
models, but despite the volume manages to maintain a very high margin,
never spending spends more than a few hundred for a top-end complete bike
and, usually, far less than this for quality merchandise. (Recently: three
mtb wheelsets including one pair with $500+ White or DT or Hugi or somesuch
hubs, all high end, for, what, $180?) I, on the other hand, buy few and
relatively dear, ride, then sell cheap -- good thing my volume is 1/50 of
his! He is, by my habits, surprisingly detached from his bikes; it is only
one in, say, 50 that becomes a keeper.

Me, in contrast: I buy, ride, evaluate, say meh, sell, but when I come to
something I like, I stick to it forever and disdain to experiment further.
My two customs are my forevers, tho' the Ram is within a
half-mile-to-one-mile thereof.

Re: [RBW] Re: Brooks Saddle tension lesson

2013-06-23 Thread Bill Gibson
Well, tension is usually not needed. Less is more. The leather will
stretch, and will not recover. Eventually, you will max out the bolt, left
or right threaded, and it will be time for a new Brooks (As they used to
say). New Brooks may not have the leather of the ones from 60 years ago
when new, and may not last as long as those legendary Brooks. But, they can
still be good, and there were always lower quality Brooks. Especially when
I started riding with passion in the late 1960's. I've heard you can buy a
Brooks made from a premium level organic old cow leather, thicker and maybe
cut only from the best part of the hide, but all things must pass. Still,
maybe we are beyond the era of heroic and misguided saddle soakings in oil,
and oven heating. Does anyone park their bike outdoors all the time
anymore? I don't. That used to be a saddle killer, too. Less is more, but
keep it dry, and ride ride ride!

I have a couple rides I'm building up. If things work out, might work with
some other people to design an event ride. Sort of a SoCal D2R2 but on a
smaller scale. Stay tuned!

Cheers,

[RBW] RE: [BOB] 2013 Summer Solstice - Staunton River Battlefield to Red Hill Loop Ride

2013-06-23 Thread meade anderson
Osage Orange Trees - one of my favorites, little seen these days but made
great hedges too.now an Osage Orange is a tree that artisan camping axes
should have their handles made out of.(I have a box of OO in which I keep my
piece of meteorite.protection by the tree of steel)

Well to be honest, the ride was 62.99 miles.I lied about 63.it can be an
area which has lots of emotions/feelings.history, abandonment, nature,
rural, desolation.it's a very different area.the collapse of the furniture
industry and the textile mills and those goods being made over seas has
pretty much crushed the economy with the decline of tobacco.I could go
on.but hopefully it can get better.tourism helps.even bike tourism. ;  }

As for the bike, that's a custom Bilenky, 650b frame, that Stephen built for
me.low trail, lots of clearances, ss coupled, one of these days I'll finish
the details of the built.I've changed it around several times and now it
sports a set of Jitensha Studio Nitto bars which were supposed to be custom
bent.I picked them up about 10 years ago and never used them on a bike.

I would have loved to cranked until dark and camped another night but it was
the next to last night of the James River Batteau Festival (talk about the
retro grouches of river running) and they were pulling into Cartersville and
I wanted to catch some old time music and have a cold brew at the
landing.another river, another entire drainage basin with its own
history.though more prominent in the books.

[RBW] Re: Shorty bolt for kickstand plate

2013-06-23 Thread BSWP
Are the kickstands on RBW site sold with, or without mounting hardware
included? I can't tell from the text, thanks. I see that there's a shorty
bolt, and a chainstay clamper, but it's not explicit that one needs those
if ordering a kickstand. Why not say so in the item descriptions?

Re: [RBW] Re: Shorty bolt for kickstand plate

2013-06-23 Thread Peter Morgano
The single legger comes with the sandwich style clamper, long bolt, that's
it. I had to buy the shorty bolt to make it work. The twin legger again
comes with the sandwich style clamper and long bolt but they give you the
rubber mounting shims for your seatstays to prevent damage. You have to buy
feet separately no matter what style you get.
