The cafe top isn't intended to seal, it's intended to be like a car coffee
cup -- spill free when sloshed about a bit yet easy to drink from. So, yes,
you're using it wrong. Just swap out to the sealed lid when you need it.

[RBW] Leather gloves (fingerless mitts) ?

2013-07-10 Thread Ron Mc
I retired my Riv summer-weight leather gloves partly because there is no
padding at all in the hooks, and mostly because there is just too much
padding in general.
Yes, 3XL, they restrict my circulation and cause pain. I will admit, I
caught a tire groove and went over at 18mph one day and they landed me
without injury (well, pride and a scrape on my saddle).

After trying on several, I ended up with Giro LX, because the gel does pad
the hooks. But after a ride, same effect, though a lot less severe. I get
no pain bare-handed, but hey, I can klutz and want something for fall
protection. (Holy cow, Deacon Patrick, put some shoes on).

Does anybody make a fingerless leather riding glove with NO padding?
Thanks.

[RBW] Re: Leather gloves (fingerless mitts) ?

2013-07-10 Thread bwphoto
Golf gloves, driving gloves? Those are the only ones I can think of. Part
of the problem with finger and hand tingling is the angle of you wrist,
that's why the Ergon grips work so well, they prevent the wrist from
bending inward. I used to have that problem with drops until I moved the
brake handles closer so I could relax that joint. Riding on the hooks, at
least for me, puts my wrists at risk to say nothing of the rest of my body
so I avoid it.

Besides wearing glove since my first experience in pavement hitting as a
kid, I also use them for spinning since I sweat so much they only way I can
keep my hands on the bars!

Good luck..

thanks, but your analysis is incorrect. I ride with straight wrists and
bent elbows - the problem is squeezing of my hands by the padding. It is
not tingling or numbness, it is pain. Thanks again

[RBW] Re: Terrible News

2013-07-10 Thread justinaugust
My younger brother passed away 2 years ago. He was an avid member of a
truck modification group similar to the RBW group. His friends went as so
far to as come to the memorial service for him. I'm not sure if that would
be the most appropriate action but I think collecting donations for flowers
or food to be delivered (a truly wonderful thing to have around in times of
grief such as this) would be highly appropriate and a wonderful thing to do
for his family. In moments like these discovering how many people a person
has touched in their life was incredibly wonderful and part of the healing
and acceptance process _for me_. I know each person is different but
perhaps flowers or an edible arrangement would be a nice thing to have
delivered.

Thoughts?

This has been hard news to take, and I know I'm not alone in being confused and disturbed and saddened by this.

I will miss Seth.

I'd also like to thank Jack for sending messages from the forumto Seth's family. Even if it is only miniscule, I hope it can give them something. I'm still in shock and can't imagine how they feel.

Re: [RBW] Re: Terrible News

2013-07-10 Thread Robert Barr
The postcards that this group and others in the Riv world sent to my late
friend Nick Cassell, were initially a source of great encouragement for
him, and when he died, for his his family and friends. His son arranged
all the post cards on two panels that were prominently displayed at his
memorial. The area was visited all through the memorial. I wonder if we
could do something similar for Seth? Perhaps we could each send a favorite
ride picture to show that Seth is in our thoughts? I am sure Grant would
post something to reach the larger group. However, I am not in Durham, so I
am not sure how this could be coordinated, so it is just a thought - like
many others I feel some show of support is needed. Bob (Indianapolis)

[RBW] Re: Fender install on Riv

2013-07-10 Thread stevef
Sidepull brakes, right? Older Riv (most all bike/brands actually) road
bikes were limited by the short reach calipers of that era. I doubt you'd
be able to fit much more than a 25mm tire and 35mm fender. And it is
probably not optimized for fender installation (chain/seat stay bridge
positioning and drilling for example) like newer models. If you want to
fit a fatter tire (and wider fender) a 650b conversion would be your best
bet. (assuming you have 700c wheels now)

I recently bought my wife a 54cm ca. 1995 Rivendell. I'm in the process of
installing some 40mm Tanaka alloy fenders and I am battling with the
minimal clearance for fenders offered on the bike. I'm using 28mm Gran Bois
Cerf tires. I bought some River City Reacharounds as there simply isn't
enough clearance on the rear so I needed to cut the fenders. Looks like the
front will also need to be cut. Not enough room for a crown daruma.

The rear fender is pretty much in place but the fender line is funky. I'd
love to hear other folk's solutions. Thanks in advance.

hitched up the trailer. Since I built the X the trailer has been sitting
idle so I wanted to see how it worked with the X.

Other than getting a few entertaining looks and a little kid telling his mom
he wanted one pulling the trailer was pretty uneventful, I did notice the
absence of the second tank on the return trip. I have to say having a cargo
bike is really convenient and with 2 Big Apples it is my errand bike of
 choice.

Here's a link to see the set up:

I keep thinking of the possibility of a Riv long tail...

Fantastic! What a grand and beautiful ride! How did the fendered bike do?
I'm contemplating testing out my skills and my Hunqapillar's set up (50mm
Schwalbe Dureemes and fenders) on the Colorado Trail to see how we both
fair. We both do fine on the single track around here, so I'm optimistic.

WIth abandon,

In the 1930's and 40's my mother, her brother, and their parents used to

my mom has always said that is was incredibly fun. I'll bet you road some
of the same trails.
Thanks, Don
