[RBW] Re: Can my B-17 be saved?

2013-07-23 Thread doc
I have a Champion Flyer that developed a ridge in the center as it was
breaking in that became uncomfortable. I ended up cobbling together a
press using some plywood pieces and a few C-clamps to flatten it back
down. It involved a layer of cloth to prevent any abrasion, then the
custom cut pieces of plywood top and bottom, and then clamping everything
tight. The inside piece was pretty small in order to fit under the rails
and springs. Finally, stuff a water-soaked rag inside and let it sit
overnight. Remove in the morning, and let it sit, still clamped, for a few
days. It came out perfect, and I finished the project by tieing the sides
as close to the back as possible. It's held its shape ever since while
continuing to soften ever so slightly.

PAC Tour blog on how to break in a B-17 (or any new leather) saddle. I've
used the method twice before with really good results. It involves soaking
the saddle in hot/warm water, rubbing in mink oil then a 10 minute ride and
let it dry overnight. Well, this time, I only let it dry a few hours,
thinking if I left it in the warm/hot sun, it would dry out enough. So I
did the first 10 minute ride, then a few hours later went for a little over
an hour with my girlfriend. Towards the end of the ride, we stopped and I
was horrified to see my brand new B-17 Special stretched and sagging. I
guess that although it felt dry, it wasn't fully dry and it stretched out
on the longer ride. My impatience catches up with me often and it did again
with a vengeance. I tried tightening the bolt a couple of turns but it
still has the sag in it. In one of the old Rivendell Readers, Grant had a
way to get more miles out of a worn out leather saddle. He stuffed stiff
foam under the rails and I think he even used leather shoe laces to tighten
it up, but I was wondering if anyone thinks I could somehow un-stretch
the saddle. Maybe soak it again, stuff something under the rails and bake
it at 200 degrees? I'm at a loss. Maybe I just have to mark this up as
 experience. Any suggestions?

2013-07-23 Thread Peter Pesce
I read about this reflectoring idea on Sheldon's site a while back. Don't
recall if it was a Sheldon idea or a Jobst Brandt idea, but it sounds like
it meets all the ideal criteria for reflectors - as much surface area as
you want, motion, etc. As most rims are bit convex in cross section (or a
lot, if you have Dyads or aero rims) you'd get good reflection across a
range of angles. And if you use the white / silver DOT tape then the
stickers would be virtually invisible on silver rims during the day. If not
sticking out is your thing.

I've been meaning to do this for a while. Sounds like a quick easy weekend
job.

[RBW] Re: Dawn of the Hunqapillar

2013-07-23 Thread shawn m.
Peter,

Your resurrection of this thread is timely, in a way. This past weekend I
took the Hunqapillar on an overnight trip from Seattle to Port Townsend. My
route was a conscious choice of more climbing for less traffic, so I became
pretty intimate with how it climbs, and how I climb, too. I had spinal
neurosurgery in June and this was the first big ride since, and given that
recovery had compromised some of my fitness there was some concern that all
those hill might very well wear me out. And they mostly did, too, but I
made it. The bike was very comfortable and stable climbing, and with a
couple of exceptions I was able to stay in the middle ring. I was carrying
approximately 10 lbs. in the front basket and that load up high made for a
noticeable wobble when climbing out of the saddle; nothing unpredictable or
overly flexy, but you could feel it's effect on handling. Descents were
pretty much all grins and wahoos, though. Overall, I love the Hunqapillar.
We're carfree so it gets ridden daily for transportation/utility, and it's
always a joy. Living in Seattle I can't go anywhere without climbing a
hill, and frankly if my beat-up physiognomy can ride it up the hills, I'm
confident that you won't be disappointed either. For context, I'm 47, 5'9,
175, lifetime unracer, recovered mountain biker, infrequent tourer. If
you're on the fence about a Hunqapillar, I say dive in. As the others here
can attest, it's a wonderful bicycle.

A couple pics of my 'camping' trip to Port Townsend:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/45524179@N08/sets/72157634765980946/

I should mention that I didn't actually DO any camping. I ran into old
friends in PT who took me to dinner, bought me beers, and made me a warm
bed for the night. That's a first-class campout in my book!

Cheers,
Shawn M.

[RBW] It's still possible to order a 64 cm Atlantis

2013-07-23 Thread David Craig
Hey Group:

Great news for tall folks.

I've been corresponding with Keven at RBW about ordering a 64cm Atlantis frame.
Although the Atlantis info on the RBW website makes it appear that the 64cm
frame is no longer available (e.g., even the geometry info isn't listed), 64's
are still made. For anyone who might be interested, RBW offers the 64cm
Atlantis on a built by order basis. According to Keven, the current wait from
order to shipping is about 5-6 months. The frames are made by Waterford with
essentially the same geometry as listed on Cyclofiend's website:
http://www.cyclofiend.com/rbw/geometry.html. Keven told me that the chainstay
is now 1.5 cm longer and that current bikes don't sport the rear cantibrake
bridge braze on. The rest of the geometry is unchanged and do include the
kickstand plate and the fork brazeons for a mini rack.

As with the current frames, Riv requires a deposit of approx half the frame
cost up front with the balance when the frame ships. Current Atlantis frames
are $2300. Because they are built to order, small changes can be accommodated.
For example, I plan on having mid fork brazeons added to better accommodate my
Tubus lowrider rack. Changes to the paint are also possible for 350.00

I'm happy to discuss any questions about the Atlantis from the prospective of a
previous owner as well as how it compares to the Bombadil and Hilsens in the
same sizes. I've owned each of these bikes and I've done long tours on both the
Bomba and the Atlantis. Obviously, Keven or one of the other Riv folks would be
the best contact regarding ordering, etc.

Lastly, if there are any tall folks out there who might be interested in a good
deal on a 65cm, single tt Hilsen, see my sale posting on the group. The frame
is in excellent shape!

[RBW] Ride, with photos

2013-07-23 Thread Patrick Moore
One advantage of working for yourself is that you can simply take off
during a work day and go for a nice ride. My brother Peter is in town and
we drove about 40 miles northwest to the town of Jemez Springs, in the
Jemez Mountains of course, and veered off to NM 376, a tiny, almost
one-lane dirt road that must have been a logging road at one time.

On the way, you pass a mile or so of red, sandstone cliffs that are so
strikingly red that they are almost cartoonish -- the color reproduction on
the iPhone photo is simply not true. At any rate, you climb steeply on a 1
1/2 lane paved road through several arches cut through rock, to a pullout
where the ride begins.

After about a mile you hit dirt and gravel -- and gross washboarding.
Supposedly 2,400 feet in 16 miles, though because of time constraints we
turned around at the 18 mile mark, still climbing, probably just a mile or
so short of the junction with NM 126.

2 1/2 hours including several stops for talk with fishermen -- trout,
flies, -- I am no fisherman, pissing, watering, and once to adjust a
caliper and once to reflate my tires -- climbing steeply with 12 psi is a
drag in the best sense of the term. I figger, 2:10 to the 18 mile marker.

1 hour even back, with one conversation stop, through some of the worst
washboard I've ever ridden -- I couldn't see and I couldn't draw breath.

Peter, with his early '90s ti with racing wheels -- very light wheels, ~25
lb overall -- left me behind on the climbs riding the 35 lb Fargo with,
mistakenly, the fat SnoCat wheels. (On the way down, he left me behind,
too, because of some 30 lb additional mass, ability to pick a better line.
But I am better looking.)

A total of about 34 miles, 3+ hours, a sore left knee, and incipient bonk
since I did not eat breakfast or bring food -- though with my metabolism,
this is only a venial sin and not a mortal one. I didn't feel low until a
few miles from the starting point.

Very beautiful -- must do it again sometime.

[RBW] FS: 65 cm Single Top Tube Hilsen Frame

2013-07-23 Thread David Craig
Group

I'm continuing the painful process of culling down my bike herd. Due to the
nature of my circumstances, I'm striving to get down to one or two bikes.
I've already sold off my Bombadil and Quickbeam (Thanks, Chris and Keegan!)
The next to go is my Hilsen.

The 3 year old frame is in excellent condition. It has never been crashed,
there are no dents and very few minor scratches. I have ridden it quite a
lot but I've kept it in great shape. I'll be disassembling the bike for
sale since I'd like to be able to ride it right up until it sells.

The price for the frame/fork and headset will also include the silver side
pull brakes - all for $1500 not including shipping.

Pictures of the complete bike: http://tinyurl.com/lu2v9or Again, my asking
price just includes the f/f/hs and brakes. I would consider selling the
complete bike for the right price, although I'd prefer not to ship the
complete bike. I could deliver in CA, OR or WA in the next two weeks.

This is one of the last of the single tt Hilsens. FWIW, I weigh 210 and
I've found the frame to be perfectly stiff enough for my needs.

I've also got a complete 64cm Soma Smoothie ES that I'm selling for $500 -
It's kinda like a poor man's Rambouillet. This bike is also in really good
shape. More details if requested. I'd prefer not to ship this bike. (I'm
located in Arizona and I could deliver it in CA, Oregon or Washington as
I'm headed that way on vacation in a couple of weeks)

Please contact me via PM (off list).

Thanks,

Dave

I have, it works great on an Alba. Maybe put a piece of bar tape under

[RBW] Re: Anyone mounted a rear fender on rear brake bridge bottom screw hole?

2013-07-23 Thread Will M
The prior owner of my 2004 Rambouillet drilled out and tapped a 10/32
thread into the bottom of the rear brake boss to make fender mounting
cleaner and easier. Works great!

On Sunday, July 21, 2013 1:28:20 PM UTC-4, Michael wrote:

I could use a really short screw with a panhead, but not sure how many
turns I could get in there and if it would hold. Maybe just three.

My Sam's Longboard slides around thru the metal mounting bridge that came
with it that attaches to the brake bolt because of my saddle bag, and then
the fender rubs the tire. So I am thinking that if I drill a hole thru the
top of the fender, I could mount it to that brake bridge hole and it
wouldn't move around anymore. Whaddya think?

[RBW] Re: Need a new rear shifter

2013-07-23 Thread IanA
If the LBS started out saying it was a trashed RD and now they are saying
front shifter, I, personally would be looking for a second opinion. The
Shimano bar end shifters are very reliable - I'm not sure how it has
suppose to have failed. It would be strange that the problem simply
occurred through usage, but could have, as a remote possibility been the
result of some defect. As a benchmark, I have approx 40,000km (most of
that put on during a two year long tour) on a set of seven speed Shimano
bar end shifters and I can't find anything wrong with them.

Much more likely to be related to damaged cable or housing. Also, the bar
end shifters are a little tricky to set up and you can only end up with
limited pull if the square thingy is installed incorrectly. I have been
convinced in the past that I have set them up correctly, pretty much every
time after changing cables/housing, only to find similar symptoms to what
you describe. A bit of trial and error and the correct orientation has
presented itself.

How did the shifting problems originally start? Was it following a
service? Was a gradual thing? Or was it a sudden change in performance?

2013-07-23 Thread William
I used the cheapie Sun Race thumbies on my wife's initial Yves Gomez build,
with Albas. I hated them. They just felt so cheap and janky. The real
deal killer was that the frictiony part could not be tightened enough to
hold the front der in place, and I was not using an unusually strong return
spring front der. So I trashed them. I think I literally threw them away,
but I can check my parts box. The right worked OK. If I still have them
I'd mail them to you free, if you pay postage. Let me know if you want to
try them.

[RBW] Re: Ride, with photos

2013-07-23 Thread Patrick Moore
Forgot to add:

1. The Fargo is very well set up. The 44cm B135 is very comfortable for
non-technical off road use -- I doubt it will do well on technical
singletrack; many different positions, but because of the rise from the
clamp to the ramps, using the flats is not very comfortable. The ramps are
wonderful, though, as are the curves and the hoods and the hooks.

2. The young Japanese man is Jin Takashi or something, who is 25 and who is
riding from CA to WDC with meanders to Grand Canyon, Chaco Canyon, Santa
Fe, Chicago, etc etc. Chaco Canyon to Albuquerque today; tomorrow ABQ to
Santa Fe; thereafter, he's open. He has allowed himself 3 months.

His touring rig is a high end German racing bike in full carbon fiber with
non-compact Ultegra and what looks to be an 11-25 or 27 cassette -- a 39
low gear is enough for anyone carrying 30 lb over the Rockies, right? He
camped last night at Chaco Canyon, and that involved 15 miles in and 15
miles out of horribly washboarded gravel road -- must be nice to be young.

On Tue, Jul 23, 2013 at 3:49 PM, Patrick Moore bertin...@gmail.com wrote:

[RBW] Re: 7/19 BLUG broken Sam

2013-07-23 Thread William
Yeah, it totally can. If the front wheel is locked, and if the front tire
cannot slide, and the rider + cargo is pretty heavy, the fork absolutely
can fold before the rider goes over the bars.If it was on dirt the
front tire would have most likely slid before the fork buckled. If it was
a lightweight rider + cargo, then they would have gone over the bars before
the fork buckled.

One of the reasons frame builders make way-too-strong frames is so the fork
is a sacrificial part during a mishap like this. The 2TT Sam frame
shrugged this off.

Re: [RBW] Re: 7/19 BLUG broken Sam

2013-07-23 Thread Peter Morgano
I think those companies would be aware of QR connections on fenders but
most likely ruled them out on style issues. You are sacrificing some safety
for style points, its all about your choice. I ride VO fenders but with
Hetres on the Bombadil I have tons of room under there and it would take
some kind of stick to jam it up, clearance to tire is also an issue,
although some have said less clearance is as safe as alot since it doesnt
give debris a chance to ride up the tire i dont think that is true,
personally. I mean if it was a stick so big it could jam on the fork crown
with no fenders at all if you have knobbies that are close to max tire
size.

Jan Heine, who advocates aluminum fenders, claims that well mounted Honjos,
Berthouds and ilk don't really have this risk. You can probably find his
reasons on his blog (http://janheine.wordpress.com/), but it seems to me
that well installed fenders, with a small gap between trailing edge and
tire, pose little risk of picking up sticks.

OTOH, one reason I have not gotten around to installing fenders on the
Fargo is to avoid this problem -- I encounter far more sticks on dirt than
on pavement.

First and mainly, glad the rider will be OK. Second, I'm having a hard
time re-creating the dread happening here. How was the fender attached to
the crown that would let it rotate forward like that? What I've read from
more experienced riders (e.g. Jan Heine) is that metal fenders don't
require the dropout releases because they resist folding/rotating toward
the crown--the common plastic fender trick that results in over the bars
and/or bent fork.

Not trying to defend the lack of safety features on metal fenders, or imply
that the rider's setup was wrong. Just a curious case.

Re: [RBW] Re: 7/19 BLUG broken Sam

2013-07-23 Thread ted
Since Jan has posted here in the past, and is a good friend of Grant,
perhaps he will enquire into the specifics of this event and offer his
views on the relative safety of various fenders and fender installations
here. He as previously stated on his blog that:
Regarding safety, I have asked every randonneur in France whether they
knew of fender-related accidents, and none could recall one. On the other
hand, there are plenty of reports of accidents with plastic fenders
crumbling into the fork crown. Break-away devices seem to help with plastic
fenders, but even then, they don’t approach the safety record of
well-installed aluminum fenders. Generally speaking, aluminum fenders are
stiffer, and thus unlikely to crumble when hit by a twig that is picked up
by the front wheel.

On Tuesday, July 23, 2013 7:17:48 PM UTC-7, Patrick Moore wrote:

Jan Heine, who advocates aluminum fenders, claims that well mounted
Honjos, Berthouds and ilk don't really have this risk. You can probably
find his reasons on his blog (http://janheine.wordpress.com/), but it
seems to me that well installed fenders, with a small gap between trailing
edge and tire, pose little risk of picking up sticks.

OTOH, one reason I have not gotten around to installing fenders on the
Fargo is to avoid this problem -- I encounter far more sticks on dirt than
 on pavement.

[RBW] Need Cycling Safety Statistic for newspaper article

2013-07-23 Thread bo richardson
I wrote an article for the Bellingham Herald about who pays for roads and
that Chuckanut Drive was built for
bicycles and wagons and not for cars.

In the article I cited an old statistic that ninety percent of all cycling
crashes happen in the first two years of cycling.
I have been quoting the statistic for years and cant remember where I
picked it up.
I got called on it and the closest I could come to backing it up was that
novices crash at a rate of five times
that of experienced cyclists in spite of novices almost never riding in bad
weather or at night or other
dangerous times.

Can anyone help me out or correct me on this point of fact?

Thanks

[RBW] Re: Need a new rear shifter

2013-07-23 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Ian,

A couple days ago I noticed that I couldn't hit the 2 largest cogs. The LBS
put the Albas on for me in May. I don't usually use those gears so it may
very well have happened then. I suspected the RD because it came a bit bent
and had to be bent back to shift properly when it was installed. That was
before I switched to Noodles. Seems fine now based on both visual
inspection and success in shifting manually.

How would I check that the shifter is installed properly? I haven't done
them myself yet.

Turns out I don't need a new rear derailler after all, I need a new

Shimano bar end is only shifting 6-7 cogs, even in friction.
LBS says they checked the sqaure thingy and confirmed that it is

Apparantly I need a new shifter.

Anybody try Sun Race friction thumbies on Alba bars? $7 at Jenson

Since I only need 1, i guess it's either those or the Micro Shifts that

I should mention that I didn't actually DO any camping. I ran into old
friends in PT who took me to dinner, bought me beers, and made me a warm
bed for the night. That's a first-class campout in my book!

 Cheers,
