[RBW] Thin Gripsters are cool

2013-07-26 Thread NWAJack
I've been using SPDs, but as I was ramping up my mileage for my first century
was getting a lot of discomfort. Put my grip kings back om and instant relief.
A pair of sneaker pedals should arrive today to try out also.

[RBW] Great hookup with fellow Riv geek in Denver

2013-07-26 Thread Kip Otteson
Had a great time meeting up with Mike (I don't know his last name) and his
wife Melody in Arvada. I found them through Bilenky bikes as I was looking
to set up my in-laws up with a Viewpoint tandem. When I looked in his
garage and saw a Quickbeam I knew I'd met a kindred spirit. Little did I
know that he had a treasure trove in the basement. Mike said he'd seen my
posts about Thailand from this group and we talked about a bike trip to SE
Asia. FYI, you guys are always welcome to Chiang Mai for a great bit of
riding. I also have a house off the Colorado Trail in Jefferson, CO and we
are here in July most years. Once again, you are always welcome to the
house. We have plenty of room. Last time a made an order at Riv I threw
down the gauntlet and said that Jefferson, CO was the S24O capital of the
world. Dave said, Prove it. I'd like to propose a Colorado Riv
Rendevous in the future where we can get together for a weekend of riding,
campfires, and cooking. I think it might be in order to get Grant out of
the Bay area for this one. We are taking a sabbatical in two years time
when we'll be able to host in September. That's the best time of the year
to see the color changing in the aspen groves right by the house. Thanks
again for being an inspiring group of folks.

[RBW] FS/T Railroad Shirt

2013-07-26 Thread Mitch Browne

I bought two of the no-longer-available Railroad shirts in medium a couple
of years back.

Both are labeled M but one fits a little larger than the other and has only
be worn about 3 times.

I'd like to sell the larger than medium barely worn one for $50 shipped or
trade for a medium Wooly Warm button vest.

This is the Wolly Warm that completely buttons down the front and opens up.

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Dawn of the Hunqapillar

2013-07-26 Thread shawn m.
I didn't mean to give that impression at all, just that with my basket
piled up kinda high I could feel it more. Like my Sam, when loaded, it
seems to handle better with some weight in the front. The few times I've
carried a touring load solely on the rear, I've felt the front end to be a
little quick-handling. I'd like to try a larger rack up to run panniers up
front for longer trips. There's always one more thing to try!

Brian: Would love to go for a ride sometime. I do 90% of my riding solo, so
I'd welcome the company. It would be fun to put together a casual Seattle
Riv ride sometime, too.

 Peter,

Your resurrection of this thread is timely, in a way. This past weekend I
took the Hunqapillar on an overnight trip from Seattle to Port Townsend. My
route was a conscious choice of more climbing for less traffic, so I became
pretty intimate with how it climbs, and how I climb, too. I had spinal
neurosurgery in June and this was the first big ride since, and given that
recovery had compromised some of my fitness there was some concern that all
those hill might very well wear me out. And they mostly did, too, but I
made it. The bike was very comfortable and stable climbing, and with a
couple of exceptions I was able to stay in the middle ring. I was carrying
approximately 10 lbs. in the front basket and that load up high made for a
noticeable wobble when climbing out of the saddle; nothing unpredictable or
overly flexy, but you could feel it's effect on handling. Descents were
pretty much all grins and wahoos, though. Overall, I love the Hunqapillar.
We're carfree so it gets ridden daily for transportation/utility, and it's
always a joy. Living in Seattle I can't go anywhere without climbing a
hill, and frankly if my beat-up physiognomy can ride it up the hills, I'm
confident that you won't be disappointed either. For context, I'm 47, 5'9,
175, lifetime unracer, recovered mountain biker, infrequent tourer. If
you're on the fence about a Hunqapillar, I say dive in. As the others here
can attest, it's a wonderful bicycle.

A couple pics of my 'camping' trip to Port Townsend:

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/45524179@N08/sets/72157634765980946/

I should mention that I didn't actually DO any camping. I ran into old
friends in PT who took me to dinner, bought me beers, and made me a warm
bed for the night. That's a first-class campout in my book!

 Cheers,

[RBW] Re: Looking for Adirondack route suggestions.

2013-07-26 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Don't know Loon Lake itself, but you're not too far from Plattsburgh (and
the ferry to Grand Isle, VT), which gets you to a great bicycling spot.
There's a rail trail that runs from Grand Isle into Burlington VT (a
really cool town), via a Bike Ferry sponsored by the Burlington-based (and
awesome) cycling advocacy group, Local Motion. The ferry only runs from
10-6 Fri-Sun during the Summer, but if you can somehow make a day-trip of
it, I'd say it's well worth it. There's good camping in Grand Isle State
Park (if you want to make a real adventure out of it). Check out Local
Motion and ferry info at:
http://www.localmotion.org/programs/islandline/bike-ferry

Good luck!

[RBW] Re: Looking for Adirondack route suggestions.

2013-07-26 Thread Michael Hechmer
The Adirondack Park is a great place for riding. Even though I live in VT,
I often ride in that area. The roads have wide shoulders, are in better
condition than Vt roads, and even though you are in the mountains the
grades are rarely excessively steep. From Loon Lake I would minimize
riding on RT 3 which is boring. But the Jones Pond RD, Rt 60 (County 30 on
old maps) State 30 and 86 and 186 are all pretty good. I often ride over to
30 through Rainbow Lake to Paul Smith and the Visitors Info Ctr just up the
road, and then south on 30 for an hour or so. Do carry water though
because it is sometimes quite a long distance between watering holes.

Rich, at gear to go tandems (http://www.gtgtandems.com) in Saranac Lake
runs tours and has a bunch of great rides already laid out. I have done a
tour with him and the routes were all great. If you contacted him he could
probably give you a cue sheet. Take a tandem out for a spin, its a blast.

Hey Kip,

Great to hear of other Riv. folk in Colorado! I'm west of Colorado Springs
in Green Mountain Falls. I don't drive for my bludgeoned brain and have
great difficulty being around folks, but if we were to do a remote enough
(aka no motor sounds once on the trail), and folks were willing to go
fragrence free in their use of soap, laundry detergent, and all else, then
I'd love to join in on something, schedule allowing! Depending on location
and trip plan, my family would be joining me (I'm the only one with a Riv.
so far). So, I realize I'm a long shot for all the accommodation I need for
joining a big group thing, but perhaps other rides can work out and I love
the idea.

With abandon,

To clean my brushes I use ammonia. It works like a charm. Not sure how it

[RBW] Re: Great hookup with fellow Riv geek in Denver

2013-07-26 Thread Deacon Patrick
Grand spot for a cabin! Kenosha Pass is between section 4 (closed to bikes
due to Lost Creek Wilderness) and 5 (open to bikes). We've been eying
section 5 as a possibility for a bikepacking trip as some point. It's also
a great, semi-central meet point from Denver and Colorado Springs that is
in the mountains.

Thank you for the offer of a place to stay. I'd likely not be able to stay
(or even enter) your home due to my wimpy brain and scents, but could
possibly camp if there is land for that and it is quiet (as in the only
sounds are nature, not roads). Also, Kenosha Pass is only 2 hours away from
our home, so wouldn't necessarily need to overnight except for the
bikepacking part. Hm. Something like this would really push my risk
factor. I'll need to evaluate what makes sense. Thanks for getting to play
with the idea!

Any other Coloradans interested in something?

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] FS 2006 Rambouillet 60cm Full Bike

2013-07-26 Thread jason
Hello, I've got a baby girl on the way. The home repair bills are
mounting, the space for extra bikes is dwindling, and if I didn't ride this
Rambouillet before the baby comes then I'm pretty unlikely to afterwards.
As a result, I'm selling this beautiful bike. Don't worry for me, I've
got my trusty Atlantis that seems to do everything I ever need a bike to
do. I bought this bike on the list, so I'll sell this bike on the list.

The bike has hardly been ridden. The original owners lived on a boat, so a
few of the bolts have rust marks but the bike is in great shape. It has
been in my garage and only ridden a few times since I bought it. It does
have a few surface scratches on the top tube but they're pretty minor. Not
remotely to the level of beausage, not hang it on the wall quality either.

I'm hoping to sell it fairly quickly locally and I'm short on time to get
it professionally boxed and shipped.

$1500 Local--San Francisco Bay Area
$1750 boxed and shipped continental US.

Many bicycle falls are not reported, because they don't result in injury
serious enough to report or be logged. This is one of the challenges with
helmet safety statistics, riding/collision statistics, etc.

One of the resources (can't remember which one) looked at the changing
demographics of bicycle collisions. (I'll have to revisit that one, but it
seems like information from older sources may not reliably be applied to
the present given the shifts in collision demographics.)

[RBW] Re: Looking for Adirondack route suggestions.

2013-07-26 Thread Geoff Cisler
I did a long multi-day loop from Rutland,Vermont, circumnavigating the
Adirondacks and back last year and had a lot of fun. The main issue with
our time spent in the Adirondacks is that we made it a loop, and there is
really only one way to ride North-South (Rt 30). I prefer the meandering
back roads of Vermont, with lots of dirt and hills and minimal
semi-trucks. However, if you're based at Loon Lake, I'm sure just finding
a tiny road and taking it to the dead end would be a pretty awesome
adventure in itself.

Here's one day and the best part was from mile 63 to 80 -- amazing back
road near WhiteFace and then a blazing downhill!

[RBW] Re: It's still possible to order a 64 cm Atlantis

2013-07-26 Thread BSWP
I'm curious, will that be a 2TT frame? And are even larger custom sizes
available, in Atlantis form? My assumption in the past was that - for a
custom order - any RBW model could be made up in any size. My own
inclinations are leaning toward a slightly-stouter frame for long rides
with moderate loads, keeping the LongLow for Brevet-style rides. An
Atlantis would be fantastic, in a size that fit my long legs and arms.

[RBW] Re: 7/19 BLUG broken Sam

2013-07-26 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
It's actually pretty hard for a stick to get through the spokes of a wheel
with a reasonable spoke count. Not impossible, mind you, but difficult.
I've flipped sticks into one side - snapping a spoke, but never all the way
through. (Mythbusters actually did a good segment on shoving a broomstick
into a motorcycle wheel - but speed was quite different.) Good reason for
32h or 36h setups...

The great squirrel-snapping-the-front-fork examples (more than one,
curiously. quite googleable.) are from very low-count wheels. It also
provides a good contrast to how different materials handle
super-high-stress impacts.

Back to the example at hand. I've seen accordianed rear plastic fenders a
few times, as those tend to not have the QR's. If you roll a lot of mixed
terrain, you are liable to pick a stick now and again. It happens much,
much faster than you would think. At one point, I sketched out a
paisley-shaped doohickey which you attach to the trailing edge of your
fender and then could point/angle to prevent this. Never took the time to
bend something up.

The more critical issue is the clearance of metal fenders. The sobering
example in those photos is that it's worth tuning the fender line, and that
it isn't just for aesthetics. Given the bend - which would tend to occur
below the jam (fulcrum) where the metal thins out - it does seem that it
happened right at the top of the tire.

Front tire stoppage is scary stuff in my book. Stay back, stay alert and
ride safe, folks!

bike probably leaves the ground relieving the force on the fork. Perhaps
the extensive fork damage is the result of a post-stick, high speed impact?

Hi Kip,

It was great to meet up with you and your family yesterday for the
Viewpoint demo. I've always lusted after those photos of your
Thailand rides, which always seem to coincide with our winter riding
limitations here in Colorado. Maybe Melody and I can someday take you
up on your offer for some Thailand riding. In the meantime, keep me
in mind for any rides planned for the Jefferson area. I'd welcome the
oprotunity for a change of scenery from the metro area!

Thank you for the offer of a place to stay. I'd likely not be able to stay

possibly camp if there is land for that and it is quiet (as in the only

bikepacking part. Hm. Something like this would really push my risk

Any other Coloradans interested in something?

+1 on Thin Gripsters. I use them w/ the Hold Fast straps and really like
the combination. I can wear any shoe that I own and ride with foot
retention. Pretty cool. I have found it helpful to remove the pins on the
front half of the pedal to allow your foot to slide in and not get hung up
on the pins. Pics to prove it. :)

[RBW] Re: Zurich bike shop recos?

2013-07-26 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have spent a coup;e of weeks in Zurich on a couple of occasions, and
can't believe this could be a big problem. Zurich is a great city and
bicycles are everywhere. Schools, businesses and train stations are
surrounded by bikes. Even in Jan. there are lots of practical commuter
bikes on the road. The only drawback is that Zurich is German for Too
Rich, and for very good reason. You may have to sell both your car and
children to afford to live there.
