Re: [RBW] Re: Trying to decide on handle bars for my Hunqapillar

2013-08-10 Thread qwerty
I have to put in a plug for the new revised moustache bars. They've
quickly become my new favorite bar over drops or traditional moustache
bars. I really like the wider grip and less reach over the old
moustache bars. Mounted at saddle height, they're more comfortable on
longer rides than riding in drops. Also, less need (for me) to use a
shorter stem like traditional Mbars. Actually, they appear to be
very closely shaped to inverted Alba bars, but for some reason I can't
quite put my finger on, I still prefer them over those as well. Oh
yeah, they're great on a Hunqapillar, for off road climbs and
descents. Too bad RIv is already out of stock on these, but I'm
hoping they'll be restocked by next month. In the meantime, if anyone
has a pair that didn't work out for them, hit me up off list!

I'm trying decide on *Albatross - or other -* bar for my Hunqapillar

I currently have Sam Hillborne with moustache bars and it's great, but
would not mind some more hand positions. I was very intrigued by the Salsa

Fargo and its woodchipper drop bars. I do not plan on doing excessively
long tours - mostly day long trips of several hours at a time. I was
thinking of trying *drop bars* on the Hunqapillar.

However, when I ride with my wife, she prefers a more leisurely ride, and

this is where the moustache bars I found a bit less comfortable because I

just really want to go faster. So, I was thinking of a more *MTB style or

Nitto Bullmoose bar* to be a bit more upright. If I take the bike on
rougher trails, I would think something like *Nitto Bullmoose* bars (more

 MTB style) would be best.

I hadn't really consider the *Nitto Albatross *bars - how long are they
for longer distances and rougher trails? I have noticed that a lot of
Hunqapillar riders use the Albatross bars, and it has gotten a lot of good

reviews. And Rivendell even features a rider on mountain trails using what

looks like an Albatross bar on one of its videos!

Some swear by another one, the *Nitto Bosco Bullmoose *bar, which sort of

 lends the above.

Any opinions on what handle bar best serves me in all situations?
 Albatross? Other?

 Thanks.

[RBW] Brooks Flyer quick fix please

2013-08-10 Thread Michael Rivers
I find that there are two adjustments I need to make to Brooks saddles when I
first put them on a bike. Everyone knows about the up and down tilt that
depends on how high your hands are in relation to the saddle. Equally
important to me is the slight side to side adjustment of the nose which can
depend on both my slightly assymetric hindquarters, as well as the break in of
the leather. I usually tweek the saddle position as often as every 100 miles
for the first 500.

Another trick is to add Proofhide (or LL Bean waterproof boot wax which is what
I use) on the side that is a bit stiff. There is variability in the hide
around the saddle, and softening the harder spots can help.

YMMV

Re: [RBW] Re: Ma Petite Betty

2013-08-10 Thread Anne Paulson
Cecily, with your gorgeous wonderful Betty, you don't actually need
to get over your fear of diamond frame bikes. You are going to have a
wonderful bike that lets you do a zillion bike things. If you never
ride a diamond-frame bike, so what?

I suspect that as you ride your Betty, you are going to get more
comfortable, and you'll find that types of cycling you now have some
trepidation about-- which might be for example, riding on gravel,
riding down steep hills, riding up steep hills, or other scary bikey
things-- will become less scary, and this might include riding a
diamond-framed bike too. For me, taking it easy and trying new things
gradually works better than forcing myself; that might be true for you
too.

I also find, and you might too, that riding with other people inspires
me to go a little beyond my comfort zone (for example, er, riding down
a long rocky muddy singletrack, ahem). It's important, though, to find
like-minded riders who don't sneer at your bike and are comfortable
riding at your pace.

Looking forward to hearing about how your bike works out.

[RBW] OT: Japanese bed (shikibuton)

2013-08-10 Thread Bobish
I'm seeking opinions and info on traditional Japanese beds. I've been sleeping
on the floor for years (on a memory foam pad sitting atop a rug). I thought of
it as an experiment and bought the cheapest memory foam I could find (basically
a bare 3 thick slab) with the intention of upgrading--or going back to regular
bed if the experiment went bust. Well, it turned so well I never replaced the
foam pad. But now I'm interested in a Japanese bed and would love to hear from
anyone here (off list, please) who has experience with such. I see that there
are variations in the bedding style and materials...and on whether it sits on
the floor or on a frame or tatami mat. I know there is plenty of info on the
net but I figure I'd shoot this out just in case there is a bob-er rbw-er who
has 2 cents to throw down.

[RBW] Re: Shifting Issues Question for the Mechanic Types

2013-08-10 Thread Johnny Alien
I was able to adjust the FD and now it shifts perfectly. For the record
there were two issues at play here.

1. The FD was not adjust correctly. It wasn't even close...I have no idea
why it was this far out of whack.
2. The shifters needed to be tightened.

The second issue is apparently very common and as noted it will need to be
re-tightened from time to time. RIvendell said they have though about
including info that it would most likely need to be done and I have since
told them that is a very good idea. I actually question why, if they know
it's a common issue, they would still only be thinking about including
this info.

The first issue is actually what caused my chain suck. The worst part is
that because it was not done right and because it caused chain suck the
paint on my chainstay is severely messed up. I am not someone who babies
their bikes and wear is OK but when you get the paint destroyed on a $2500
bike within the first 2-5 miles because of an assembly error it puts a sour
taste in your mouth. I let them know that I was displeased but never heard
anything back even as far as an apology. When buying a Rivendell you agree
to pay a premium for alot of parts as well and part of all of that is you
expect pretty much the best the whole way down the line.

Things happen and I won't dwell on it but I did want to let people know
that even though it is coming from Riv please do a full checkup of every
part before taking it out. Their assembly after shipping video does not
mention anything past putting it together and while that may be OK for most
people in my case I would have saved some heartache had I know to check out
all the shifting as well.

[RBW] Big Front Rack loaded on a Hunqapillar... am I crazy?

2013-08-10 Thread shawn m.
Right now, I run either a Large Saddlesack or panniers on a Nitto Big Rear
Rack on my 54cm Hunqapillar, with a basket on a mini front for a little
extra weight in front, and it works pretty good. But I'm curious if I
wouldn't be happier with a Big Front Rack with panniers and a basket. Can
anyone share there experience with this kind of load? I feel like I want
more weight up front, more than I'm comfortable with putting on the
Mini-Front, and I want the weight a bit lower, too. I'd probably keep the
Big Rack in back for longer trips. I'm curious as to how it handles, both
loaded and unloaded.

Anyone run a setup like this?

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: OT: Japanese bed (shikibuton)

2013-08-10 Thread Deacon Patrick
Ian, the on topic connection, if it rises to such lofty heights, is found
in the benefits I've experienced by eschewing cushioned, supportive
furniture. I never stretch yet am lithe and limber. My neck, shoulders,
back, and legs no longer hold on to aches or stiffness as they always did
pre-floor living. In my mind this fits into the same category as over
supportive, last-shaped, high-heeled foot binding devices, er, shoes
(nearly all shoes are high-heeled). Going without them leads to my body
being stronger and functioning the way God made it to function. The
transition can take a long time (unlearning bad habits of motion and
posture often do), but the benefits begin right away and ramp up from there.

I emailed Perry with details of what we sleep on, but off list as requested.

WIth abandon,
Patrick

That's great. I saw Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks the night before last in

lickette, she sings backup with Daria at the Dan Hicks shows. They are a
riot, well worth seeing on so many levels. It blows my mind that i was
listening to Dan when i was in college, and now this connection. Since I'm
shamelessly plugging, Roberta is an awesome singer in her own right. She's in
the Bay Area and her 20s jazz album, A Little Sugar is attracting a lot of
attention. Check her out. Cheers!

Talk about a great ride! Port Ellen up the coast for a tour at each of my
favorite distilleries (Laughroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg, saving the best for
last). Good thing the road was well curved, as we'd've ridden off a
straight one with all that great whiskey in us. Horrid, falling apart hired
bicycles. Used a dry sone wall to put my handlebars back on right (no
tools). We thought we had only three more miles to go after Ardbeg, but it
turns out the BnB was the other side of the island, so we had 17 miles
still to go. Oops.

from the frame repair shop to the painter. When I found out that the bike
had been shipped to the painter I asked if it would be possible to pick it
up in Sacramento (bike was repaired there and I was going to Sacto for the
day) and Riv said that it was in Chico with no mention of the fact the
painter never acknowledged receipt and was not answering phone calls so
they speculate that he might be on vacation. Getting the whole story took
 numerous emails.

Unfortunately, I haven't had a very good experience dealing with Riv. I
rarely received repair updates unless I constantly emailed them and the
 final straw was the painting.

Other lacking customer service was at the start of the repair when Riv
said that they would send the bike to Bernie Mikkelsen for the repair and a
few days later Riv said the bike would go to Steve Rex. When I asked for a
clarification Riv responded that I could go ahead with Bernie if I chose
but Steve Rex is dependable. I wouldn't question their recommendation, so
why turn it into a selection on my part?

Riv also asked at the beginning if I had another bike to which I responded
I did not and no offer of a replacement so why ask? However, after
complaining directly to Grant about the painting I got an offer of a
replacement bike. However, no direct response from Grant. Offer came from
an employee. Riv is a small company so why wouldn't Grant respond himself?

I'm pleased that Riv stands behind their products by doing the repair for
free, but the customer service was somewhat lacking.

[RBW] Interesting sights and creating abstract art with Sam

2013-08-10 Thread bwphoto
Yesterday I did my usual 30 mile loop which included a stop at Lake Nokomis
beach for a snack and a few photos. When I headed out I started hearing
funny beep, which at first I thought was my Garmin, so I fiddled with it
and it's connection and the beep seemed to stop but I was still trying to
figure out what it was. A few minutes later it returned beeping several
times as I hit some bumps. So I started thinking it was related to
something on the bike or on me that was getting jarred, then it stopped
only to resume again. Since the Sam was handling just fine and the only
electronic thing I could think of was my Garmin I thought I'd just chalk it
up to mystery and switched my attention back to the road ignoring the beeps
altogether.

A few blocks down the road I noticed a photo-op so I pulled over and pulled
out my phone which proceeded to beep at me in no uncertain terms while
presenting me with a vast collection of abstract shots and video of the
inside of my left pant pocket. It looked like I forgot to completely close
the app and it just went on it's merry way making it's own abstract photos.

The kayak trailer was parked in a rack along the bike path leading to Ft.
Snelling. Seems like an awkward load given the foot traffic and tight turns
on this particular bike path. Here are the pictures to prove it:

I may opt with Doug and either bring take out or ride out for comeda. I

Do you have a reservation and how do I specify the campsite when I get

[RBW] Re: Any last suggestions before I have to throw my Bleriot in a dumpster?

2013-08-10 Thread blueride2
I don't want this problem. I didn't look for it.
It just happened.

I feel for you. I've had extensive back surgery involving titanium rods, cages,
and screws. It kept me from riding for a full year, but all is well now.
Sometime recovery just takes time. You can't push it much. As others have said,
physical therapy can help. Core exercises help, but mostly just time.

All the best, and keep the bike!

[RBW] Re: Trying to decide on handle bars for my Hunqapillar

2013-08-10 Thread Ozonation
Thanks for all the replies. Well, it looks like I'll go for the Albatross
or the Bosco Bullmoose. Now I've got to decide which will serve me
better...

RBW also suggested the Albastache, but I figure it's probably a bit too
similar to my current moustache on the Sam.

On Thursday, August 8, 2013 10:58:56 PM UTC-4, Ozonation wrote:

 Albatross? Other?

 Thanks.

[RBW] Greetings - 64 cm Atlantis?

2013-08-10 Thread Paul Germain

Dear Tony(s),
I have a PBH of 863cm and ride a 61cm Atlantis - the tallest of all my bikes.
I'm 6' with a long torso. I feel at home on it. The stand over is a tight fit,
but works fine for gravel pavement, but I would not do rough off-road with
it. I think the top tube on the Atlantis is a bit (one-cm?) shorter than other
Rivs, so you might factor that in. It's more important to me than stand over.

Paul Germain
Midlothian, VA

Tonester tony.mad...@gmail.com Aug 05 09:22AM -0700

A few thoughts: I'm 6'3 with a 91pbh, short torsoed. I would have fit
on a 64c but chose a 62c for a couple of reasons: the top tube was
slightly shorter and fit by reach better and I wanted a bit more stand
over. If you've done any challenging off-loading, you'll have experienced
the need to hop off the pedals and touch down on uneven ground. If the
bike is on ground higher than where your feet land, a bit more standover
can be more uh. accommodating? I'm also running 40c tires so that adds
to the equation somewhat. On the road or light duty trails it's less of an
issue. I think in the end what you'll be comfortable on depends on your
riding needs will be.

Given what's been shared on this thread, I'd be inclined to look for a
trade for a 62c.

Is Squeaky Peugeot Guy the PDX equivalent of LA's Lone Wold?

A highlight not captured in the pics was Andy saying we just got passed by
the squeaky Peugeot. Squeaky Peugeot guy was movin. Didn't seem like he
was stopping to eat blackberries along the way.

Night of 23rd in San Mateo State Park. http://goo.gl/maps/6fRK9 The
rest is just details...

Northern crew meeting at or about 11:00 in Irvine to ride down. I
haven't been fully paying attention to what the southern contingent is
doing.

You should plan on being there with that bottle of whiskey!
