[RBW] Re: [BOB] Re: In need of 9 or 10 speed (= thin) 14 Shimano compatible cog, not first position (outer), preferably with build in 9/10 speed spacer.
That's the problem. None of my very many scavenged cogs is a suitable 14. I do have one with a shoulder but the shoulder is too wide -- noticeably wider than a 9 speed spacer -- and given that the home-brew cassette barely, just barely, fits onto the hub body, it is too wide. (Most of the cogs are 8 speed or thicker, thus even at its happiest the cassette barely fits onto the hub.) Anyone? 14 and 28, both thin, as in 9 or 10 speed. Also, a short cage rd? The last is not important, but perhaps, just perhaps, a short cage will shift slightly more precisely than a long cage XT? The cassette is now 12-13-15-16-17-18-20-23-26. I don't need a 12; a 13-14-15 ,,, 28 would be ideal. Straight block on a dirt bike! But really, the outer three are almost just like spacers -- but it would be nice to have a 14 t spacer instead of a 12 t spacer. Those bars on Ebay just... don't... look... right? Maybe it's just the photos, but as Mike pointed out, the drops look perilously deeper than any original Dirt Drops I've ever owned or seen. A guy who rides with our Tuesday evening group comes with his bike in his decrepit old hatchback, but his other car is a Lotus Elise, which is funny to me. [RBW] Re: Rack under load; Toplight mounted; Re-covered Flite
Jeff, thanks for the link but after reading that thread, I'm even more convinced that it's a google mobile app problem. (See forum post below.) • Perry POST FROM FORUM: Re: Iphone 4s Takes Pictures Upside-Down??? Oct 30, 2011 12:07 AM (in response to BEEZR) It is not a bug in the iPhone, it is a bug in the viewing software and there have been several threads about this 'problem' in the last couple of years. The explanation is rather simple. The EXIF metadata spec contains a field which defines how the image should be rotated for proper viewing, i.e. 'which side is up' Along about version 3.13 or so of iOS the software was changed to utilize that field of the EXIF spec--likely to facilitate faster photo saves from the camera. Prior to that time iOS devices with cameras physically rotated image data so that the rotation value field of the EXIF metadata could be set to zero. This allowed the images to display properly on those apps that were (and many still are) brain dead, i.e. they ignore the EXIF rotation field assuming it is zero, but that practice greatly increased the image to image time because rotating the image is CPU intensive and is better left to systems with fast CPUs. So, the problem does not lie within the iPhone, it lies within the other apps that have so far failed to recognize and/or support the EXIF standard properly. Don't complain to Apple, complain to those companies with brain dead software--and there are quite a few still in the dark ages of image presentation. As a previous poster stated even Apple's own Safari doesn't handle it correctly (or at least it didn't earlier this year...I haven't checked lately). I have suggested to Apple that they provide a switch to enable the old practice of rotating the image prior to saving but that has never happened. If set to ON one could be notified that image to image time would be increased and the user could then decide to use it or not. I suspect it wasn't added because the explanation of the function it provides could be confusing to non-technical users but I have nothing to support that suspicion. It should also be noted that virtually all high end cameras set the rotation field, they do not rotate the image prior to saving. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Here in and around ABQ, NM, even the roadies are generally friendly and appreciative of lesser breeds without the law (Kipling said that). I often get a thumbs up or Nice bike! or at least, How *old* is that???!!! from carbonarios. Funny: perhaps it's just my temperament, but the adrenaline surges and I bristle when I come across a pack of billboard roadies. T'other day, riding home from church on a pavement route to dirt, I turned a corner to find six young roadie bucks coming the other direction. I swear, the blood pressure rose, the hearbeat increased, the grip tightened, the legs churned -- amazing (and rather funny -- slow mo agression!). Re: [RBW] Sustained an attack from Goat qaeda.
Yet more on Stan's ... Late last night, putting the Fargo in the stand to shorten the chain, I noticed many goathead spikes -- tops decapitated -- sticking in the tread. I idly pulled one out only to hear the inevitable fs. I spun the tire: this one took 60 seconds or so, but eventually the hole sealed. No discernable difference in pressure per the thumb test (I rode it briefly this morning with no need to pump). 2 oz per tube. Wonderful stuff, though they say it dries after a few months and has to be replenished. the short hooks seem to be the problem (I do not have them level to the ground but rather the ends slightly north of parallel) with my hands in the drops there just doesn't seem to be enough room to get comfortable. Not sure if you've ridden on Cunningham-era bars and attendant variations, but short of the Specialized BB-1, you might find the tops a bit too narrow for CX, esp. if you plan to run interruptor levers. The most natural spot to handle the Dirt Drops were in the drops, (or from the drops to the ends Patrick) for me. Riding on the hoods seemed too narrow, as well as on the tops, but then again that might be the spot a CX racer would spend most time - as low as one could get. My experiences with the Midge is different. All positions are comfortable, but, yeah they do still feel a little strange. I have Tektro R559 right now and am going to the Dia-Compe 750. So, with mild cursing, I replaced the tube, remounted the tire, and inflated it. POP! Now, with more determined cursing, I dismounted the tire completely and inspected it. I saw no foreign objects, punctures, or rips in the tread. Upon further inspection, I noticed that a rip on the sidewall, maybe 2mm above the bead. Damn. Turns out, I mounted my brake pad too high and it had been braking against the sidewall. I saw a very faint kool stop salmon stripe on the tire; the pad had been rubbing away at the sidewall, probably since I mounted the tires in July. I replaced the Lierre with a spare crappy Kenda (pasela-clone). So, lesson to users of what are among the most supple road tires around, the Grand Bois line: ensure you're not tearing up your sidewalls, inspect the brake pad alignment. I was thoroughly warned about the fragility of the Grand Bois' supple sidewalls against external threats (thorns, etc), but hadn't thought about this eventuality. However, I did mention that I love how these tires ride. Especially compared to the Kenda, which has an uneven casing (it's about .5mm taller on one side than the other. the second tire in the pair was even worse) and has ugly yellow gumwalls. Oh well, the Kendas were free with the wheels, and I have another Lierre shipping to my house today. [RBW] DIY Pedal Spike Installation - Grip Kings
Feeling a bit arty and quasi helpful... and a package of recently ordered pedal spikes were sitting on the work bench waiting to be installed into some Grip Kings. It was a perfect storm of sorts. The camera came out and the drill press was plugged in. Not that installing pedal spikes is rocket science. Regardless, it was a fun little project to document the process.
