[RBW] Re: [BOB] Re: In need of 9 or 10 speed (= thin) 14 Shimano compatible cog, not first position (outer), preferably with build in 9/10 speed spacer.

2013-09-10 Thread Patrick Moore
That's the problem. None of my very many scavenged cogs is a suitable 14. I
do have one with a shoulder but the shoulder is too wide -- noticeably
wider than a 9 speed spacer -- and given that the home-brew cassette
barely, just barely, fits onto the hub body, it is too wide. (Most of the
cogs are 8 speed or thicker, thus even at its happiest the cassette barely
fits onto the hub.)

Anyone? 14 and 28, both thin, as in 9 or 10 speed. Also, a short cage rd?
The last is not important, but perhaps, just perhaps, a short cage will
shift slightly more precisely than a long cage XT?

The cassette is now 12-13-15-16-17-18-20-23-26. I don't need a 12; a
13-14-15 ,,, 28 would be ideal.

Straight block on a dirt bike! But really, the outer three are almost just
like spacers -- but it would be nice to have a 14 t spacer instead of a 12
t spacer.

This is what I want:

   28.5 38.0 24.0 13.0 83.3 14.0 77.4 15.0 72.2 16.0 67.7 17.0 63.7
18.0 60.2 20.0 54.2 34.2 23.0 47.1 29.7 28.0 38.7 24.4
This is what I have:

   28.5 38.0 24.0 12.0 90.3 13.0 83.3 15.0 72.2 16.0 67.7 17.0 63.7

Those bars on Ebay just... don't... look... right? Maybe it's just the
photos, but as Mike pointed out, the drops look perilously deeper than any
original Dirt Drops I've ever owned or seen. Also, all were sleeved, not
bulged a la the auction.

Not sure if you've ridden on Cunningham-era bars and attendant variations,
but short of the Specialized BB-1, you might find the tops a bit too narrow
for CX, esp. if you plan to run interruptor levers. Just my two bits.

(Those Nitto RM-013s are a readily available compromise if you're after
both flare and tops.)

700c x 35mm Marathon Supremes, (they appear to be more like 32mm though)

MKS Touring pedals

I discovered some time ago that rather than having many things I'd rather
have a few high quality items, and in terms of security, I have the
advantage of parking my bike in a bike cage which is located in a secure
underground parking garage,

My long term plan is for 3 bikes to cover all my riding needs

MAP Semi Custom 650B Rando (frame is on order wait time is 2 or 3 more
months, after that it will likely take me another 6 months to collect parts
and build it) - this will become my goto bike for most riding (the tubing
spec and my planned build it up is in the spirit of an all rounder/light
errand runner as opposed to an event bike)

Betty Foy redo - this will be my grocery getting/dog transporting/errand
bike - should be ready in a few months

Roadeo - will switch back and forth from single speed (my preferred riding
come fall) and go fast/event bike - I am not sure I really need this bike
in my stable but won't sell until I stop riding it I. I know I would be
just as well with a cheaper SS bike to cover fall/winter riding (should
have never sold the SimpleOne, and the semi custom would be fine for
charity events, but I have the Roadeo so I'll keep it awhile

POST FROM FORUM:
Re: Iphone 4s Takes Pictures Upside-Down???
Oct 30, 2011 12:07 AM (in response to BEEZR)
It is not a bug in the iPhone, it is a bug in the viewing software and there
have been several threads about this 'problem' in the last couple of years.
The explanation is rather simple.

The EXIF metadata spec contains a field which defines how the image should be
rotated for proper viewing, i.e. 'which side is up'

Along about version 3.13 or so of iOS the software was changed to utilize that
field of the EXIF spec--likely to facilitate faster photo saves from the
camera. Prior to that time iOS devices with cameras physically rotated image
data so that the rotation value field of the EXIF metadata could be set to
zero. This allowed the images to display properly on those apps that were (and
many still are) brain dead, i.e. they ignore the EXIF rotation field assuming
it is zero, but that practice greatly increased the image to image time because
rotating the image is CPU intensive and is better left to systems with fast
CPUs.

So, the problem does not lie within the iPhone, it lies within the other apps
that have so far failed to recognize and/or support the EXIF standard properly.
Don't complain to Apple, complain to those companies with brain dead
software--and there are quite a few still in the dark ages of image
presentation. As a previous poster stated even Apple's own Safari doesn't
handle it correctly (or at least it didn't earlier this year...I haven't
checked lately).

I have suggested to Apple that they provide a switch to enable the old practice
of rotating the image prior to saving but that has never happened. If set to
ON one could be notified that image to image time would be increased and the
user could then decide to use it or not. I suspect it wasn't added because the
explanation of the function it provides could be confusing to non-technical
users but I have nothing to support that suspicion.

It should also be noted that virtually all high end cameras set the rotation
field, they do not rotate the image prior to saving.

 with a Fly.

Note how the Toplight bolts nicely to the rear extensions of the
lengthwise tubing -- the holes are threaded for this purpose at moreorless
80 mm (he got them a wee bit too far apart, but plastic files easily.

This Flite is my original from 1990 or 1991 and I finally decided that the
cover was just too thrashed to continue use of it. I meant to pull it off
leaving the foam and re-cover the foam, but the foam came off with the
cover and would not let go. So I simply contact-cemented the new leather to
the plastic base -- somewhat crudely, as you can see from the nose. The
leather was considerably thicker than the original cover -- nickel
thickness -- and would not fold around the edges of the base, so I cut it
 more or less flush therewith.

Comfort: jury still out. My right-side arse was irritated at a spot, but
then this morning I noticed that said spot was a wee bit sore -- we'll see
how it goes. The left-side arse and remainder arse felt fine.

Noise: I don't know why this should be so, but the saddle squeaks much
more now than it did originally --it squeaked modestly then. This alone may
drive me to replace it with a standby Flite from my stash.

Rive spotting around ATT Park. I went to the SF Giants baseball game last

fashion and still be eliminated from contention in the NL West. Fun game.
I spotted two Rivendells. A Simple One with what looked like Jitensha bars
on the corner of 3rd and maybe Folsom. Also a 58cm (maybe a 61?) 700c
Atlantis with Noodles right in front of Willie Mays Plaza and the protest
that the food services union was participating in.

Lo viste to either one of you.

Funny: perhaps it's just my temperament, but the adrenaline surges and I
bristle when I come across a pack of billboard roadies. T'other day, riding
home from church on a pavement route to dirt, I turned a corner to find six
young roadie bucks coming the other direction. I swear, the blood pressure

amazing (and rather funny -- slow mo agression!).

Yet more on Stan's ...

Late last night, putting the Fargo in the stand to shorten the chain, I
noticed many goathead spikes -- tops decapitated -- sticking in the tread.
I idly pulled one out only to hear the inevitable fs. I spun the
tire: this one took 60 seconds or so, but eventually the hole sealed. No
discernable difference in pressure per the thumb test (I rode it briefly
this morning with no need to pump).

2 oz per tube. Wonderful stuff, though they say it dries after a few months
and has to be replenished. The 1 oz in the front Parigi Roubaix on the Ram
seemed to have no solids (manipulating the tube) after 3 months -- had to
toss that tube because of a leak from a previous bad patch job.

the short hooks seem to be the problem (I do not have them level to the

 1) Should I get a Gotham Cargo Crate or a Mark's Rack + Wald

  Winner: Wald
 2) Should I get Gilles Berthoud Fenders or SKS Chromoplastic

  Winner: SKS
 3) Can I put duct tape on my
 frame?https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/rbw-owners-bunch/m-KYVmNtAjE--
Answer: No way, use Gaffer's tape

Well, I heeded your words, and I thought I would share the outcome of all

short hooks don't leave much room for my hands. i have them mounted with

original WTB). My problem with it was that with such short hooks I could
not set it up with ends of hooks level to ground, which I must do to be
comfortable. And after all is said and done, it was just too damned wide.

A desperate and, as I thought, merely interim replacement was a pair of 44

Lo and behold (Low and Behowld) they turned out to be as close as this
sorrowful lower world allows to the perfect bar for the Fargo of all that
I've used, and they are legion.

 bulged a la the auction.

Not sure if you've ridden on Cunningham-era bars and attendant variations,
but short of the Specialized BB-1, you might find the tops a bit too narrow
for CX, esp. if you plan to run interruptor levers.

The most natural spot to handle the Dirt Drops were in the drops, (or from
the drops to the ends Patrick) for me. Riding on the hoods seemed too
narrow, as well as on the tops, but then again that might be the spot a CX
racer would spend most time - as low as one could get.
My experiences with the Midge is different. All positions are comfortable,
but, yeah they do still feel a little strange.

I have Tektro R559 right now and am going to the Dia-Compe 750. I
think even the 2 mm extra reach from the Dia-Compe will allow the
brake pads to clear the rim so that even when they wear down, they
won't destroy my tire (or at least I won't have to worry about it)!

I'm gonna have the Frankenbeast with a sidepull front and a centerpull
rear. I'm sure that breaks lots of rules...

[RBW] Re: Grand Bois tire mishap -- user error

2013-09-10 Thread Michael Hechmer
Ouch. Been there. Done that. Good news, lived to tell about it. Glad you
are OK. BTW, this mistake can be made with any brake; I did it with Racer
Ms. There's no substitute for paying attention.

I recently converted my Rivendell Road to 650B and equipped it with 38mm
Grand Bois Lierres (Hetres won't fit between the fork stays). I love love

However, I went to air up the front tire last weekend and the tube blew.
POP! So, with mild cursing, I replaced the tube, remounted the tire, and
inflated it. POP! Now, with more determined cursing, I dismounted the
tire completely and inspected it. I saw no foreign objects, punctures, or
rips in the tread. Upon further inspection, I noticed that a rip on the
sidewall, maybe 2mm above the bead. Damn.

Turns out, I mounted my brake pad too high and it had been braking against
 the sidewall.  I saw a very faint kool stop salmon stripe on the tire;
the pad had been rubbing away at the sidewall, probably since I mounted the
tires in July. I replaced the Lierre with a spare crappy Kenda
 (pasela-clone).

So, lesson to users of what are among the most supple road tires around,
the Grand Bois line: ensure you're not tearing up your sidewalls, inspect
the brake pad alignment. I was thoroughly warned about the fragility of
the Grand Bois' supple sidewalls against external threats (thorns, etc),
but hadn't thought about this eventuality.

However, I did mention that I love how these tires ride. Especially
compared to the Kenda, which has an uneven casing (it's about .5mm taller
on one side than the other. the second tire in the pair was even worse)
and has ugly yellow gumwalls. Oh well, the Kendas were free with the
wheels, and I have another Lierre shipping to my house today.

[RBW] Re: FS: Saluki 650b, 60cm, complete bike

2013-09-10 Thread iamkeith
Man, this bike is really gorgeous. And I want a 60 cm Saluki s
badly. But I have two green Rivendells and, though I know it's
silly, really want a different color for the sake of variety. So in
case there's anybody out there reading this, who has a butterscotch version
and thinks they might like this one better, let's talk. Maybe we can make
three parties happy!? (assuming it hasn't sold, that is.)

[RBW] DIY Pedal Spike Installation - Grip Kings

2013-09-10 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
Feeling a bit arty and quasi helpful... and a package of recently ordered
pedal spikes were sitting on the work bench waiting to be installed into
some Grip Kings. It was a perfect storm of sorts. The camera came out and
the drill press was plugged in.

Not that installing pedal spikes is rocket science. Regardless, it was a
fun little project to document the process.
