Evan had some pics as well, including the pelican incident:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/coconutbill/

I was just healthy enough to make it out there. Haven't done any
distance or intense riding in about three weeks by my calendar.
Getting up Westridge was the only bear of it for me. That plus my
readily agreeing to go back down Topanga, although that in itself was
an absolute blast. Haven't been out there in 25 years, and it looks
pretty much the same!

No aches or pains the day after, so that means all is good!

Nicely documented build! I love all the detailed photos... Seems like a great
re-purposing. In intrigued by the igh option, and that crank cog seems awfully
small. I've got a beater XO3 that is waiting for a series of winter
projects... Ss/fixed or ugh are both on the list of potentials.

I look forward to hearing some ride reports!

Very nice, Tom!

I stuck w/ drops, but very similar w/ what I was doing w/ the canti-Rom; I
really like the MSO tire. The Rom didn't have the issue w/ the derailleur
that you ran into, but the IGH is a good solution in this case. Like the
color, too.

Enjoy it!

Great pictures! I truly wish I could have made the ride, it looked
fantastic and yes what makes a ride really is the company. Glad you felt
well enough to do it. I'll make the next one just need to do some

I wondered about the details on that. I am thankful for Nitto's Big Back
Rack even when I just run the Large Saddlesack and no panniers -- it's easy
to exceed the R-14's technical limit in weight, and you add in rough
road/trail, that's a lot of force bouncing around back there.

Whoops, a missing bit from the Forks entry:

Forks to Ozette, 54 miles.

In the morning, while I was checking my rack bolts, I noticed that the
strut that goes from my R-14 top track to the right seatstay eyelet was
cracked. I assume it must have happened two days previous, during my
adventure on South Bend-Palix Rd. I guess that would explain the sounds. I
fashioned a sling out of an Irish strap, and daydreamed about a big back

Re: [RBW] Non-Nitto Front Rack Recommendations

2013-09-29 Thread Dan McNamara
A Mark's Rack M-1 (or the M-18) is really the way to go for your purpose on a
Betty. Maybe there is one out there used for you?

Not sure that the struts on the VO Randonneur rack will hit the Betty fork
braze-ons properly. The distance VO suggests is 3.75 inches below the fork
crown and I measure them at about 5.5 inches on Amy's Betty.

Another option would be the Soma front rack. It mounts at the front fork
dropouts and behind the fork so should work. Not sure how high it would sit on
a 650B frame though. But it is inexpensive.

Link to Soma: http://store.somafab.com/somialfrra.html

Link to a review:

Good luck.

I have one of these on my Velo Orange Randonneur. Mine's 5 years old
now, but I think the current production are essentially the same. The
salient points are mentioned on VO's store site
http://store.velo-orange.com/index.php/accessories/racks-decaleurs/racks/vo-randonneur-front-rack-stainless-steel.html

This rack does not mount to low-rider bosses or on canti-brake bikes. It
requires eyelets on the fork blades or p-clamps. If your fork doesn't
have brazed on eyelets be about 3.75" below the bottom of the fork crown
you'll need to use P clamps. The rack is stainless, so if you have to
cut the tang be advised, you don't saw stainless with any old hacksaw
blade. If you don't have a blade made for stainless you will saw and
saw and saw for a half hour and all you will do is polish the tang. I
learned this the hard way. The tang at the back is attached to the
fender boss under the fork crown, or you may use the included fork crown
daruma. The tang may also be bent up and attached to the brake bolt. On
some small sized frames you may have to remove the tang entirely; in
most situations you will have to bend it to the proper shape to fit your
fork. There may be some repeated attempts involved before you get it
just right (again, I learned this the hard way).

It's a fine rack for supporting a handlebar bag. You can bolt up one of
the upside-down Edelux headlights Compass sells right to one of the
front eyelets on the rack.

It is a very good rack, though can be a bear to install. I have one mounted
on my Ram. FYI, you will not be able to mount it to the midpoint braze-ons
on the fork of your Betty Foy. You will need to use the P-clamps supplied
with the rack. On my wife's Betty, I used the VO Constructeur rack instead,
as it will mount on the drop-out braze-ons.

Good luck.

[RBW] Hookin' up shifters question

2013-09-29 Thread Perry
Finger tight is good to start with. Get the barrel adjuster to mid-point to
begin with so that you can go one way or other after the fact. You may want to
adjust for indexing first and see how that runs. If it shifts indexed, I can't
imagine it not shifting manually. Go through the gears on all chainring
combinations on the stand...multiple passes. Listen for any problems and
observe whtether the deraileur want to shift on it's own in a particular gear.
That will give you a good clue about too loose/tight a cable is. Good luck.

Re: [RBW] Hookin' up shifters question

2013-09-29 Thread Patrick Moore
Just get it taut enough -- I use needlenose pliers to pull it gently. If
the chain won't move to the smallest cog, and you've properly adjusted the
"High" throw screw, then back it off a bit. It won't matter if it's wee bit
loose, for friction, as long as the lever has enough throw for the entire
cassette.

For indexing, use the barrel adjuster on the derailleur to get the
derailleur positioned correctly. Start by getting the chain to track
precisely on the middle cog and then run the chain up and down, adjusting
slightly as needed. You don't need to turn the barrel much once the
derailleur is close to the right postion.

I'll be curious how it does with 10 -- I shift 9 with no problem, and I
shifted 10 with a Simplex Retrofriction dt lever -- but the Retrofriction
had the advantage of (1) a small barrel for precision and (2) the best
clutch mechanism of them all -- better even than the Silvers, IMO.

Hi Michael, the derailer cables don't need to be super tight to begin
with. In the first position, just pull it hand tight. I mean pull it
pretty taught, but you don't need to worry about it. They shouldn't be
sagging at all, but don't need any more than that. I know that's
pretty vague, but can't think of a better way to explain it without
showing you IRL :-)

[RBW] Re: Supplier of quality waxed canvas?

2013-09-29 Thread Mike On A Bike
I have a yard of tan waxed canvas that I bought from Swift Industries a
while ago and never used. I was going to use it as a backpack cover when I
had a basket, but I've since switched to panniers. It's a little grungy
from being stored in a heap in my garage, but it's in pretty good shape.
Would be happy to sell it for $15 shipped.

[RBW] Re: Pikes Peak S30O

2013-09-29 Thread Deacon Patrick
Aye, the remote highlands are my place to play. Grin. Seeing Chris' Olympic
Peninsula photos does make me wish I could do both. It would be wonderful
to do a tour that combines it all (much easier to connect longer
backcountry tours that way). Yet when I think back to 2-4 years ago when I
was trying to figure out how I could get back into the backcountry carrying
stuff (without any weight above my waist), it sure is a wonderful blessing
to be able to ride all the woodsy adventures! I still marvel at the fact I
can do what I do with constant vertigo. God's engineering is stunning!

Thanks, Michael. The Bullseyes are off for now as I test the VP Vice to see
how they do on longer rides (I'm carrying a metal file in case some edges
need work). The wood platforms are on solid, so the noise is definitely
from within the pedal.

[RBW] '80s Peugeot built for off road riding, limited Riv content

2013-09-29 Thread RoadieRyan
Tom, I always like to see stories about getting classic steel bikes back on
the road. It's always a bit surprising how much clearance a lot the 10/12
speeds have, I have run 37mm with fenders on a vintage Nishiki, Chapeau on your
build. I especially like the use of the Nexus rear hub.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report, Part 1: Portland to Ozette, WA

2013-09-29 Thread Shawn Granton
Yeah, nice report Christopher! I've toured most of that area, so I'm
familiar with what you talk of. I did a big Olympic Peninsula tour back in
2010 and ended at Lake Quinault. Like you, I wish I had more time to spend
there. I didn't get a chance to go through Clallam Bay and then Ozette,
either, though I definitely want to in the future. Interesting about the
warning signs on SR 112, as there are only two ways between Forks and Port
Angeles: US 101 (the main way) and SR 112/113. 101 is also pretty nasty
with no shoulder, winding action, and lots of RVs for the 10 miles around
Crescent Lake. They also have warning signs.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/urbanadventureleaguepdx/6953963943/in/set-72157629524154041

I heard that "they" had the opportunity to convert the old railroad on the
north side of the lake to a Rail-Trail like the Discovery Trail east of
Port Angeles. But they opted to make it more a MTB trail instead. I don't
know how good it would be for a touring bike, but maybe next time I'd check
it out.

And yeah, did you make it through the whole pack of smokes?

yours,
Shawn

[RBW] Hookin' up shifters question

2013-09-29 Thread Michael
Putting Albas with fric/sis bar ends onto Bleriot. Hope to be able to
friction shift though over the 10-speed cassette.

*1. How hard do I pull on and hold the shifter cable when I tighten it down
with the bolt on the derailer?*
*Really hard, or just pull gently to its full length? How do I know the
cable tension is correct?*
**
*2. If I need to use the barend's indexing option because it just wont
friction shift over 10 well, what else do I need to do for adjusting cable
tension for SIS?*

Another traditional waterproof fabric is oilcloth:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oilcloth Basically, fabric treated with
boiled linseed oil. Australian "dryza-bone" type rain-wear is still made
from oilcloth. You can probably find instructions on how to make your own,
as lots of historical reenactors use oil-cloth. (Note that most fabric
sold as oilcloth is actually vinyl over a fabric layer.)

2013-09-29 Thread Roger
I looked into buying some #8 Martexin Original Wax from them recently. But
after paying the $21 for one yard, there would then be a minimum $30 small
order handling charge. Plus, I haven't made the phone call, but it's not
clear they will sell less than 5 yards.

Fairfield is set up as a wholesale suppplier, which is great, but at least
my humble Google-Fu skills have not turned up any small volume retailer of
wax duck who is set up to serve the hobbyist.
Seems like Martexin cotton duck would be perfect for a cottage industry to
offer in small amounts, or as a group buy.

[RBW] Re: '80s Peugeot built for off road riding, limited Riv content

2013-09-29 Thread Tom Harrop
Thanks for the comments.

I was also hesitant to spread the dropouts that far but there wasn't much
to lose. My main concern was losing the brake bridge, so I used tie-down
straps to support that and the chainstay bridge. I have no idea whether
there is any practical effect to that, though. Luckily the frame alignment
was OK after bending.

I was surprised at how easy the wheelbuild was. Of course it wasn't a
particularly tricky build—heavy MTB rim and not a lot of dish required so
there wasn't a lot to go wrong. I did it without a truing stand and it was
true enough, but the dish was way off, so I did it again with the proper
tools. Everything's good now.

Patrick, you're right of course. The Bombadil would be great as an off-road
bike. But it's my commuter and tourer and I don't want to sacrifice the
supreme comfort of its current set up, which includes some aspects that
don't work so well off-road, like Alba bars with bar end shifters (make
tight turns difficult) and long fenders with mudflaps (not a lot of ground
clearance, and mud jams up fenders).

I may try making my current wrap/ground cloth waxed by painting melted bees
wax on it then helping it spread evenly by the fire on a cold day.

With abandon,

Hi Patrick,
Keep asking and answering your questions-- I learn a lot from your posts!

(BTW: I think that's a Nitto Mini front rack; I just picked up one of those
for my Hunqapillar, too. A great smaller front rack for canti-bikes.)

Re: [RBW] '80s Peugeot built for off road riding, limited Riv content

2013-09-29 Thread Patrick Moore
The Bombadil sounds like the ideal off road bike; why not get another set
of tires for it? In fact, I've ridden Big Apples off road with no more
problem than slowing for corners.

Beautiful! What a grand solo adventure. Thanks for the photos and write up.
I love experiencing these trips vicariously, though I cringe at the thought

I always enjoy seeing the bikes we all build. Yours looks quite nice and seems
a creative solution to your cycling needs. How did you enjoy your first wheel
build?

Very creative. Nice bike. I was interested in the drop out spread. I have
widened a number of frames from 126 to 130 and have considered taking one
to 135 but have hesitated.

[RBW] '80s Peugeot built for off road riding, limited Riv content

2013-09-29 Thread Tom Harrop
Hi list,

Firstly an apology for the limited Rivendell content, but maybe some
members will be interested anyway.

I've been thinking about getting another Riv to use as a specific MTB /
off-road bike. I think a 64 cm Sam would be just about big enough for me
and give me enough tyre clearance for the sort of riding I want to
do—nothing outrageous, just unpaved roads and singletrack. I contacted Riv
and was told that maybe a 64 cm Sam would be a little too small, and if I
wanted a specific off-road machine I should think about a second 68 cm
Bombadil. That's a little out of my price range for the foreseeable
future... (end of Riv content).

I coincidentally found a 66 cm Peugeot frame for sale locally. When I got
it home I was surprised to find it had room for 40 mm tyres, so I decided
to build it up as a pseudo-MTB to test my Sam Hillborne theory. From my
research it's an early '80s PX-8, which was an entry-level touring bike—no
fancy tubeset or anything. I think the head and seat angles are 71° or
thereabouts and it has long-ish chainstays so it's not too unlike a Sam.

I used a dirt-drop stem to get the bars nice 'n' high, which worked out
well for me because I prefer a short reach. Other than that it didn't turn
out to be a very Riv-ish build. I had planned a 1×7 drivetrain but because
of a quirk of the frame, using a derailer would have cost me a lot of tyre
clearance at the chainstay, so I got a Nexus IGH instead.

I'm quite pleased with the Clément MSO tyres (although I'm no connoisseur).
They roll nicely on pavement, maybe even as nicely as the 60 mm Big Apples
on my Bombadil, and they have been grippy enough for the mud I've been
through. Time will tell if 40 mm tyres are enough for my large self on an
off-road bike. I'm planning to take it down to the Black Forest in a week
or two for some proper off-road riding, with hills.

Here's a photo or two of the build if anyone's
interested
.

Hope everyone has a nice Sunday.
