[RBW] Hookin' up shifters question

2013-10-01 Thread ascpgh
What I've done for years when initially fixing the long end of a cable (range
of motion limit screws roughly adjusted to hand manipulation of derailleur
before chain put on and barrel adjuster all the way in then backed out one
turn) is to feed it through the housing and ferrules, making sure all are
seated nicely to each other (just fitting them snugly) and when I am pulling it
to the cable clamp, instead of pliers or third hand tooling it to get more
tension I deflect the derailleur against its spring action with my hand when I
tighten the cable clamp. The derailleur spring pulls any overt slack and then I
give the shifter a push through a gear or two's range of motion and let it sit
for a bit to really seat the ferrules on housings, and both into the stops. No
funny kinks or smashed placeson the remaining cable.

[RBW] Re: '80s Peugeot built for off road riding, limited Riv content

2013-10-01 Thread Tom Harrop
I'm pretty sure Rigida rims are made in China. They're cheap here, but
theirs were also the only rims I could find that are wide, silver and have
36 holes and aren't disc-specific. Mavic rims are about 1.5–2 times the
price, and Velocity rims are only available in very few places and are far
more expensive.

The gearing is certainly low (roughly equivalent to a 30t ring with a 12–34
cassette?) but I think it will be about right for hills. 7 and 8 are nice
cruising gears on flat pavement. I'll post again after I've been on some
longer off-road rides. One thing I noticed, having never ridden an IGH bike
before, is that the drag from the hub is quite apparent in the bottom 4
gears, but not noticeable in the top 4.

Re: [RBW] Re: '80s Peugeot built for off road riding, limited Riv content

2013-10-01 Thread Patrick Moore
That gearing ought to be excellent for at least mild singletrack. Tell us
how it does on steep hills.

Note that the drag in the less efficient gears might moderate as the parts
wear in. I know that with the old AW, drag was minimal in the non-direct
gears.

I've been giving singletrack-appropriate gearing some thought after having
taken the Fargo, rebuilt for flatland bosque dirt road cruising with a very
close ratio 9er, onto Sandia Mountain singletrack. I think the ideal would
be a single, say 32 t ring and 8 cogs from 12 to 36 in back, for gears from
~ 77 down to ~26.

Years ago I made my first mountain bike out of an old Schwinn 3 speed
cruiser, stripping it and installing a 32 t ring in place of the larger
original; 18 t cog. With the effectively 27 wheels the hub gave me gears
of ~35, 47, and 63, which was good enough at the time (I was a young,
frisky 35 year old) for steep, rocky jeep trails and mild singletrack. I
did enjoy observing water running in and out of the Ashtabula bb as I
crossed streams.

[RBW] So Cal Riders - CicLAvia this Sunday?

2013-10-01 Thread Bryan
Hi, folks

Does anyone want to ride CicLAvia this Sunday? Information about the ride
is here: http://www.ciclavia.org/events/683/heart-of-la/693/about.

The ride is scheduled from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. It's too chaotic at these
events to find anyone mid-ride, so I was thinking we could meet at one of
the Hubs early in the day and ride together. I'm partial to the MacArthur
Park hub because I'm planning on riding from home and that's the closest
one. How about a 9:30 a.m. meet-up at the corner of 7th and Alvarado and a
roll-out at 10:00 a.m.? I'm also open to meeting earlier - I'm going to
have to head home around 2:00 for family stuff later in the day.

I hope some of us can ride together!

My buddy is riding his Fat Tire Ale Schwinn Indian-fork cruiser with 35 psi

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/estes/bike/aP9290001.jpg

didn't get too many photos of the crowds, or cool bikes, but here is me and
my daughter

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v728/bulldog1935/estes/bike/aP9290012.jpg

they estimated a turnout of 85,000.

We had a great time, and rode down S. Alamo to Mad Hatter's Tea Room for
birthday lunch for my daughter.

Also some seriously rich chocolate cake, strapped to my rear rack with my
trusty Irish straps and delivered it to the after party at my mom's
recovery room - Friday was also my dad's birthday and my mom just had a
knee-replacement. They also had a nice present waiting for my daughter. A
busy fun day.

[RBW] Gov't Shutdown - Leesburg Loop Ride Tomorrow? (10/2)

2013-10-01 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Any furloughed gov't workers, or otherwise underemployed peeps, want to
join me for the Leesburg Loop tomorrow? West on the WOD Trail from
Shirlington out to Whites Ferry and then back to DC via the CO Canal
Towpath... I'm thinking an earlyish departure. Like 0730 from
Shirlington, and I cycle at a very relaxed pace, probably no more than
12mph average with peaks in the 15-18mph. The total mileage is around
80-85 depending on your start point and I figure on grabbing a lite lunch
in Leesburg.

The message on the White's Ferry answering machine reports them open, but
worst case is a return the way we came. Weather looks splendid. Hit me up
here or offlist to coordinate if you'd like! Oh and I'll probably be on my
Trek as it seems my Atlantis has developed a BB issue...

Bryan et al, I'm going for sure, but don't know if I can plan on a
meeting time. Probably going to be getting there around 10:30 if I'm
honest about timing.

Are there any eating establishments that anyone can think of would be
a good place to meet for lunch? We don't have to all eat together as
that's a lot to presume with 100,000 other people out and about, but
at least a central place to meet? If not, maybe at the food-truck area
at Grand Park Hub? In addition to a lot of food items (and long lines)
that hub had a kid play area last year IIRC.

I wrap the macbook in a thin neoprene cover for a little protection from
my lunch and whatnot. With this cover, it *just* fits in the small
saddlesack because the 13'' is wider than the opening so you have to
finesse it in. Also, you really need to put the macbook in before
everything else because of the space constraints, which means you need to
pack and unpack everything else in the bag. It does look great though!

I used to commute with an ortleib pannier and honestly it is a bit more
suitable for the workday, because you can just grab the whole bag and bring
it with you, and you can just leave things like tools and a rainjacket at
 the bottom of the pannier.

I think I just convinced myself to go back to a pannier.

ride into a much more road-oriented affair. Here's hoping for clear
 skies.

Let me know if you can make it!

On Saturday, September 7, 2013 9:24:13 AM UTC-7, Jeremy Till wrote:

 Hey Folks-

I've had this idea since doing a mixed terrain ride down in Manny's home
stomping grounds in the Southern East Bay, back in the beginning of June.
Manny stopped by the shop where I work the other day to kick my ass into
 gear about it

Northern East Bay Mixed Terrain Ride: Sunday, October 6th, 9:30am. A
ride in the classic Riv style, showing off the best the Oakland, Berkeley,
and Richmond hills have to offer.

My thought is that we could congregate at a local coffee joint, the
Fellini Coffeebar (attached to a restaurant called Pizza Moda), on the
corner of University Avenue and Acton St. around 9:00am for coffee and
pastries. Fellini is three blocks south of the North Berkeley BART
station, and there is ample free parking in the surrounding neighborhood
for those that have to drive. Around 9:30 or so we'll swing by the BART
station to pick up any latecomers before heading for the hills.

My idea for the route is start in the south, heading up the classic East
Bay road climb of Tunnel Rd. A good warm-up and great views of the whole
Bay Area. From the top of Tunnel we'll hit up the trails in Sibley Volcano
park, descending down to the bottom of Fish Ranch Rd. From there, it's
more road climbing on Fish Ranch and Grizzly Peak Blvd. to the summit of
Grizzly Peak (great views of Mt. Diablo!) and the upper reaches of Tilden
Park, before descending on trail down to the aptly named Inspiration Point
on Wildcat Canyon Rd. From there it's more trails down through Wildcat
Canyon, heading north. Depending on the time and how punchy we're feeling
we'll loop back by climbing up to the paved Nimitz Way Trail, which returns
us to Inspiration Point, and then back to Berkeley via Wildcat Canyon Rd.
and Spruce St. If people are interested there are tons of great options
 around Berkeley for post-ride refreshment.

Truth be told, I haven't taken the time to map this out or calculate
mileage or elevation change. The route is probably short on mileage (maybe
30 or 40 something ?) but big on climbing (at least 2000'?), with most of
the climbing happening in the first half of the ride. Definitely bring
food. Luckily, there are many places along the route to refill on water.
There are also many easy spots to bail back to Berkeley or Oakland if you
need to cut it short for whatever reason.

The route is totally doable on any number of Riv-ish all-rounders.
Definitely bring something with low gears for climbing. The off-road
portions are mostly fire trail, but can be quite steep and washboarded, so
wider tires are definitely recommend. I'll be doing it on my Long Haul
Trucker with Alba bars and 700x42 file treads.

Please let me know if you're planning to come along so I have a sense of
how many to expect and who too look for.

[RBW] Re: Gov't Shutdown - Leesburg Loop Ride Tomorrow? (10/2)

2013-10-01 Thread Michael

I sense a Government Shut Down sale coming on at RBW.

Can anyone tell me why and how much of, in one sentence, the government is
 shutting down?
I don't have TV (only Netflix) and don't normally follow the news.

[RBW] Gold Fish Ride on Mt.Diablo or Mt.Diablo after the fire.

2013-10-01 Thread Manuel Acosta
Had the idea of seeing the aftermath of the Diablo fire. By far one of my
favorite mountains to ride is Mt.Diablo. I can say I have ridden 30+ times
in the last four years. So I was quite curious on the extend of the fire
damage it had on the mountain and how different it would be riding to the
top. Hence this ride.

Tom, Sean, Mark, Evan and I all met up at Walnut Creek Bart. Riding to the
top of Mt.Diablo is a butt kicker and for anyone's first time riding it you
never truly forget it. 2 out of the 5 folks riding it was there first time
riding the road. Already to a good start.
We ride our way up on a fairly quite day for Mt.Diablo passing up
tarantulas on the road and take any little dirt short cut to get us through
the road section as fast as we could. At the junction we stop and shared
some salami that Evan brought and continued up. Right after the junction
you could see the difference in what the fire did to the back side of
Mt.Diablo. The landscape, usually covered with trees and shrubs was turned
into a future apocalyptic landscape. On the plus side the clearing of the
tree made the views that much clearer as you ride further up to the top.
Mark was nursing a hang-over and was sweating out the last of the tequila
he had the night before. Regardless everyone made it to the top with no
trouble. Our descent down was a blast and we stop to admire the view after
we finally got on the dirt trails. We get to the gold fish and take the
unknown single track back down. We continued and work into more single
track and to see if there was any water in the creek crossing as we rolled
through. Sadly not enough rain to make our bikes truly dirty but we can
always come back. We finished the ride with some adult beverages and
sandwiches to call it a day.

It was a blast riding great route with amazing folks.
Due to work and time I have a new appreciation when doing these rides.
Appreciate them that much more and look forward to them every time the
weekend rolls around.

Looking forward to the next one!

Video proves that everyone loves tarantulas:

[RBW] Re: BQ on Mark's rack

2013-10-01 Thread john
Well, he's got a point. I've used Mark's rack and the Canti-versioned
Mark's rack which is a substantially different. The Nitto front rack
designed for cantis is very strong, very beautiful. Strong because the
struts are not bolted to the rack top but brazed there. Also, the
attachment from rack to fork is from a brazed strut, not one that is bolted
to the rack top (as is the tang of the Mark's rack). Without a doubt the
Mark's rack is not as stiff as the canti-versioned rack (sorry can't recall
the name, or number, even though I've got one; I'm also too lazy to go out
to the garage and check - but I know it's a campee).

The Grand Bois rack in Jan's pictures looks a lot like the canti-versioned
Nitto: really good, strong, and beautiful.

I can't speak to weight, but for beauty and strength, I'm in BQs corner on
this one.

John
