Do you think you would go the Riv route with swept back bars, or more
of a straight bar set up?

Subject: [RBW] Portland Area Country Bike Group

It seems Portland area rides happen with some frequency. When they get posted
on this list they can get buried or become clutter for those not near Portland.
In an effort to focus announcements for Portland area rides, I've created a
google group.

Mason Hill Rabble Rousers Fan Club

The idea is that this will be for ride announcements and coordination. This is
not a discussion group for bicycles or gear.

Feel free to request to join if you want to be in the know for Portland area
rides of the country bike persuasion.

Christian,

Glad to hear that you have found tires that you like.
I also use Maxxis Crossmarks, and like them very much.
I use them only occasionally, since fat tires and my wooden fenders don't
go together very well.
Velo Orange says that they're working on wide 29er fenders. I'm looking
forward to them.

Re: [RBW] Re: PDX Sunrise Coffee Club Tomorrow

2013-10-14 Thread Christopher Chen
I really think is is turning into a thing. I used to get up before dawn
only by accident, insomnia, or for travel--I'm boggled that:

1) I'd do it
2) Others would too

And now I'm tickled pink, of course, that I get to see my pals more often,
at that most quiet and peaceful time of the day.

There were four of us:

Andy on his custom Jackalope,
Tommy on his Bombadil,
Kelley on her Schwinn tourer,
and me on my Hilsen.

The climb up to Mt Tabor was wonderful--I was running a bit late so I took
a more steep approach, but the trails are in fine condition (packed dirt).
My climb took me past one of the reservoirs of the City of Portland water
system: it had been drained for work, and so had an eerie took to it. Tommy
and Andy were already on the summit when I arrived. Shortly after I started
my stove, I heard the sound of squealing brake pads, when Kelley rolled in.
Fog had enveloped the summit, but the sun burned it away just around the
time we were pouring our coffees. Gleeful picture taking ensued.

Our ride down was more leisurely. I think only Andy took a set of stairs
down. We descended as a group past another, this time full reservoir,
parting ways when we hit the city grid.

All in all, a wonderful time. If you're in Portland and are curious, mark
your calendars for next Tuesday.

Pictures proved it happened:

[RBW] Loving my Atlantis...let me count the ways

2013-10-14 Thread dougP
Just back from a tour involving rental bikes, my wife & I hopped on our
Atlantii after recovering from jet lag. What a difference! "Touring
bikes" are sometimes derided as heavy, clunky, slow, etc., but after
several hundred miles on rental hybrids, an Atlantis feels like a sports
car. Even though the overall weight isn't much different (hey, we lugged
our rentals up & down stairs, tossed them onto trains, etc.), the
performance difference was enormous, especially climbing. I can't tell you
why but hills that would be "of no consequence" on my Atlantis were
seriously consequential on the rental. In their defense, I'm sure our
rentals would retail well below US$1,000, so it's true that you get what
you pay for. Another unexpected consequence is we are both rethinking the
drop bars on our Atlantii. We were both more comfortable on the upright
bars and there didn't seem to be any downside. Pondering, pondering

Hugh:

I'll see if I can figure out when I last did this. We rode the loop down
to Pine Valley on one day, encountering snow around Mt Laguna. The next
day we rode down to Anza Borrego for a couple of days. Mid-day was too hot
to ride, & we got an early start to beat the heat when returning to
Julian. Wonderful study in contrasts.

Thanks Chris! Though were in the West, Southern California isn't as wild as

Tom, Andrew and Doc thanks for the photos; those are some beautiful bikes

was building mine, and embarrassingly, I never noticed the wood fenders.
They blend in nicely and there are so many cool parts on that Surly.
Andrew, those fenders your dad made are really beautiful and classy. Tom,

All the responses have helped me understand the compromises and trade-offs.
Many thanks again for the thoughtful responses.

The idea is that this will be for ride announcements and coordination. This

[RBW] Mount Laguna_S240_San Diego, CA

2013-10-14 Thread hsmitham
Hey SoCal Riv riders,

I know this is extremely shot notice...have been reluctant to make a post
as my lower back (Dirt drop & upright bars in my horizon) hasn't been
cooperating, two weeks ago I had to bail on a ride I organized. Since my
back has been given the go ahead here are the details:

Friday 18th of October. The place Julian, CA Meet up Bailey Pit Barbecue
on Main Street at 1:30 pm. Ride out Hwy 79 up S1 Sunrise Hwy and jump on
some dirt roads and single track around Big Laguna Lake and make camp at
Desert Overlook Camp http://freecampsites.net/#!7913&query=sitedetails
approximately
21 miles + with the dirt sections increasing the distance sightly. On
Saturday drop down to Pine Valley for Breakfast, then ride the 25 miles
back to Julian via Hwy 79 through lake Cuyamaca.

Disclosure: I have never stayed at this camp and it appears to be in the
Cleveland National Forest "Federal" and it may have a gate blocking access
in. I figure to stealth camp if the camp is closed. Also there is no water,
though it is adjacent to a Federal camp which does have water normally but
the "Feds" may have turned off the water supply, therefore plan on bringing
extra water. I plan on bringing two Platyapuses about 4 liters plus three
water bottles.

Beer and or Pie in Julian post ride.

Look forward to riding with all of you.

Best,

~Hugh

I'd prefer the 56 to live on as that ultimate camping set up including the

Again, I am very grateful for all of your comments and suggestions.
Temptation (as in the 58 cm blue Rambouillet frame now available on ebay -
the one that I hear whispering my name) is a terrible thing. The consensus
seems to be that I would be better off on a 60 cm bike (or a 59, I assume,
on a AHH).

Just for the sake of asking, what would I notice if I decided to go after
the 58 cm frame now on ebay. How would being on a frame that is a bit too
small affect the way that I feel on the bike. Likewise, what improvement
in feel would I gain by moving up to the 60 (or 59 AHH)?

the one thing that holds me back on them (and something others have not

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2013-10-14 Thread Matthew J
No experience with bolt on center pulls. If you ever go custom, I highly
recommend considering braze on center pulls. I've had bikes with braze on
Mafac Raids and Paul Racers and currently have a bike with Paul Racer Ms.
All three stopped with alacrity, had wide range modulation, and were easy
to maintain.

Would not say braze on center pulls are better than dual pivot side pulls
or mini-vees, both of which I've found to do an excellent job. Braze on
center pulls do have a very integrated appearance and serve well.

Nice pics and nice bike. I've been thinking about an off road bike. A Hunq

Hey Cecily,

Bruce is a man of the sea and the land. Often, as on this trip, he brings a
sketch book instead of a camera. It's quite impressive to thumb through

[RBW] Re: Wooden Fenders for Atlantis - photos / suggestions

2013-10-14 Thread Minh
No personal experience with woody fenders in use, but i've seen Tom A's in
person, and they are beautiful. He's done a stellar job of describing it,
and there is an almost consensus of the strengths/weaknesses compared to
plastic or metal.

the one thing that holds me back on them (and something others have not
mentioned) is how durable the wood ones are bumping into things, i live in
a really tight apartment with a curved staircase, so i always seem to bang
the rear fender against the wall, the plastic/metals ones bounce back into
shape, how would the wood ones fair?

Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls

2013-10-14 Thread Bill Lindsay
Small update. I ended up with the wrong size rear funky monkey. "Of
course it's 28.6mm, just like the front derailer clamp!" Nope. Externally
butted Seat Tube, means I needed 30.0mm. Bummer.

Anyway I did get the front set up. I didn't ride around much with only a
front brake, but it seems pretty good. I love the clearance. I am easily
able to QR the brake to get the wheel out. Also, I now have a front rack.
 All good points.

BUT..I hate how the arms tilt inward from the pivots. The brake pads
cannot hit flush on the brake track. BOO! This means I need a wider rim.
I have 19mm wide Mavic Open Pros now, but things would be a lot more
"squared-up" with a 23 or 24mm rim. The way I prefer wide tires, this
needed to happen anyway. Time to consider the Velocity A23 in 700c or the
Pacenti SL23 in 700c.

Re: [RBW] Re: Mech Q: Rear Derailer cable routing

2013-10-14 Thread Tim Gavin
Yup, rear derailer cable runs on the right (crank) side of the BB.

You can route the rear shifter cable from the right bar-end, to the LEFT
downtube stop, and have it cross over back to the right side if you like.
I do this on my bikes and it makes for better (less severe bends) cable
loops from the handlebars.

Sheldon agrees: http://sheldonbrown.com/cables.html
and here: http://www.rodbikes.com/articles/crossed_cables.html

[RBW] Re: Rambouillet or San Marcos

2013-10-14 Thread Tony McG
I have been very happy with my San Marcos. I have never ridden a
Rambouillet, but I have talked with people who have and the biggest
difference that they have commented on is that the San Marcos frame is
stiffer. I am 6' tall with an 89 cm pbh and I am riding a 59 San Marcos
with a 7 cm stem; the handlebars are level with the 79 cm saddle height.
It easily fits 33.3 Jack Browns, but I haven't tried them with fenders. I
have ridden the San Marcos about 2500 over the last year and a half,
including two RAGBRAI. It has been very comfortable and predictable, and
it climbs hills like a goat.

Thanks for the help.

[RBW] Re: Tektro brake setup

2013-10-14 Thread Garth

I've found that not all frames have perfectly equidistant braze ons also,
so this may or may not come into play here. This is why I prefer the the
post style cantilevers as they offer more adjustment .

Really though, it sounds like you need a "break" from either the 720's or
the bike or whatever. What I do when find myself "struggling" is just drop
it and laugh at it's absurdity ! I'm getting frustrated over what ? ?
Not worth it ! So ... I say to myself ... "this is silly ... I Know How
To Do This" and guess what the solution always comes quickly.
When you're in a "state of struggle" , the solutions are still right there,
but you're blind to it from the self created "tornado"... lol.No
Tornado is greater than I ,the one who elicited it !

Sean,
I have the same measurements and pbh as you. Rivs I have owned: 61 Atlantis, 60
Rambouillet, 60 Quickbeam
Current Rivs in garage: 59 Rodeo, 60 Simpleone
The 60 Rambouillet was a great fit, no issues at all. Great for long road
rides.
I rode a demo Ram 62 for a weekend when I lived near WC. It was a bit large.
Also like the bars up above the saddle.

Thanks for all of your responses. I must admit, I'm not terribly shocked that
the Rambo is considered the way for me to go.

Bo, I'm really intrigued by all that you said. What made you sell the AHH in
favor of a Rambo? I'm curious because another option that I have considered is
saving up my cash to purchase a new or used AHH.

Also, Bo, as far as your 56 Rambo, I wish I could help, but it is too small for
me. Whenever I measure my PBH I end up somewhere between 86 and 87 (I'm about 5
foot 11). Based on those measurements I would be best fit on at least a 58
Rambo - perhaps even a 60.

By the way, if anyone has a Rambo that has a PBH similar to mine, I would be
curious about your recommendation for size -- would I fit best on a 58 or a 60?

[RBW] Re: Wooden Fenders for Atlantis - photos / suggestions

2013-10-14 Thread David Spranger
I have a set of Compound Curve Woody's Fenders on my AHH. I thought they
were very easy to set up, have plenty of clearance for the tires I am using
and give me plenty of real world rain protection. After about 10 months of
commute duty, they look as they did when new. For what it is worth, the
curvature of the fenders was so good that I did not have to worry about any
undue tension on the fenders to get a good fender line.

I didn't measure the greatly precise mm. I just did a conversion from the inch

[RBW] Re: Wooden Fenders for Atlantis - photos / suggestions

2013-10-14 Thread doc
I've had a pair of flat Woodys on my LHT since 2007. As fenders go, I find
them completely adequate for moderate rainfall. Anything harder than that,
I figure I'm going to be soaked anyway. They do well with puddles,
etc...and I'm now playing around with a mudflap on the rear since a fellow
tourist was complaining about my rooster tail recently.

Honestly, though, I bought them for the looks and have never regretted it.
They stand out from the crowd, and it's surprising how often I get asked
about my "old bike." Installation was extremely easy, and I've been
thinking about removing and refinishing them since they're starting to show
some wear, but I'm in no hurry.

[RBW] Re: Tektro brake setup

2013-10-14 Thread Michael Hechmer
I have never gotten them close enough to center to make the set screws
useful.I tried setting their hangers off center but that did not help.
I fussed with them for a long time before throwing the hangers in the
recycle box and using Paul's. I have not tried deforming the spring but I
did move one to the top hole on the post. That helped. Perhaps this is a
quality control issue. I have set up Dia Compe & Shimano cantis and never
had this much trouble. One of the things I especially like about the neo
retros on my Saluki is the ability to set and easily fine tune the tension
on each side independently.

I took the brakes off, perhaps needlessly, in order to make packing the
bike easier and so will get another shot at alignment when I get to Ca
tomorrow. Thanks for all the suggestions and support.

Michael

With this much variation in measurement due to technique, does it make
sense to cite a measurement with 4 or 5 digits to the right of the

Re: [RBW] Rambouillet or San Marcos

2013-10-14 Thread Perry
More ingredients to stir into the pot…

A little dissent on the Ram. The asthetics of the contrasting paint and lugs on
most Rivs are a bit too ornate for my taste so I actually like/prefer the
riv/soma San Marcos. And the blue color is really nice (at least on the
internets--never seen one in person). I thought hard about this bike when it
came out. But alas, it has to be a 2 top tuber at my size and that breaks all
deals for me. I think it has to get to 65 cm or larger before two tubes start
to look right to my eye.

As for size, I've had many, many bikes that should have fit me according to
charts, recommendations and such. All ended up being too small but I've never
had a bike that was too big. I, however, like my bars above the saddle and I'm
riding Albas. For what it's worth.

Particulars: I've been told I have very uniform, off the shelf proportions of
torso/legs/arms. After repeated measurements, I read my PBH as between 34.5
inches (87.63 centimeters) and 34.62500 inches (87.9475 centimeters). The last
bike I bought was a vintage trek which I thought would probably be too big. But
for $100, what the hey! This is the best fitting bike I've ever owned (although
I wouldn't go any bigger). It measures as follows: Seat tube: 24" C-T, Top
tube: 23" C-C, Standover 34.5". When I straddle the bike at stops, the top tube
is right up there in my business. And yet, after many miles, it's never been a
real world issue. Because of the albas, a longer top tube would be fine. But
this top tube measurement would definitely work with drop bars if I went that
way. There's less than a fistful of seatpost showing--which looks fine to me
eye. But I find too little seatpost showing preferable to too much…whatever the
too little/too much designations even mean.

I have to personally thank Grant here. I wouldn't have looked at a bike this
big in my lifetime had it not been for his well publicized opinions on the
matter. Really opened my eyes. So all this is just some more data which may in
no way apply whatsoever to you.

Good luck!
