ps - I have become Kookaburra wool wash junkie since I bought my first bottle from Riv. The lanolin improves your wool. But it also improves all your laundry. I wash towels and sheets in soap, but all my daughter's clothes, my cotton tees - it all comes out better with the Kookaburra. [RBW] Pittsburgh night ride
A very pleasant group I've ridden with every Tuesday, April through September has now gone dormant for the dark seasons. Several of us have decided to keep up the riding under the cover of darkness. It's become a celebration of generator hubs and LED headlights. We gather at Tazza d'oro coffee and head out for the highs and lows, enjoying the pretty vast infrastructure available off the roadways where possible. We wound our way through the Carnegie Mellon University campus, through a dark Panther Hollow, along the jail trail and the Hot Metal Bridge (named for the one-time cargo of the insulated railcars taking molten iron or steel across the river to secondary mills) to the South Side. We picked a reasonably desolate path up into the heights of Mount Washington and along the non-view neighborhoods and then crossed the summit line to Grandview Avenue to enjoy the proceeds of our work. Mount Washington had coal seams that were mined horizontally with some opening on the face overlooking town. Chutes delivered it to the riverbank for a simple barge trip to the fires of the steel industry up and down the rivers. Hell with the lid off James Parton wrote in 1868. Certainly different now. This place is now about education, medicine, and technology. Other recent insights include the growing value of the waterfront *mileage,*which had been avoided as the uncomfortable place where industry was. Redevelopment has been managed to value those massive tracts and many bikeway miles have been established along them. The Great Allegheny Passage starts at the fountain in Point State Park and runs upstream along the city side of Monongahela (*Mon*) River, crossing the Hot Metal Bridge and continuing to the town of McKeesport where it picks up the Youghiogheny (* Yock*) River along which it runs into the Allegheny Mountains toward Cumberland, MD then Washington DC via the CO Canal towpath; 325 miles. Too much for tonight. We descended Sycamore Street (part of the old Thrift Drug Classic and The Dirty Dozen http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Dozen_(bicycle_competition)) to Station Square, crossed the very decorative Smithfield Street Bridge to downtown and the jail trail, and back to the start where several of us retired around the corner for a pleasant post ride refreshment and conversation. Nice to keep the positive vibe of the ride group going into dark part of the year. Sure is a glowing plug for lighting, I know it takes little provocation to spill praise for mine. On the Ram, you might be pushing it with the 38mm C-Line, depending on what the final actual dimensions are. There is a nice comfortable amount of clearance between the 33.3mm JBs and the brakes, but I'm not sure I'd want to puff out any further. So my the wiring runs I've done on my bikes have all been via zip ties. Then on here someone mentioned helicopter tape which sounded like a great way to do it. http://www.curtisrschmitt.com/HorseCyclesUrbanTourLoaded.jpg * Acorn Bags Boxy Rando Bag*—I've decided that the Ranger Tan color will look better with my bike's cream-colored powder coat finish than the Olive, so I'm selling the Olive handlebar bag since I use that the least. I am holding onto the saddlebag and toolbag for now because I need them, but as soon as Acorn makes another Tan batch I'm buying those versions and will sell off the remaining Olive goodies here. Asking $200 shipped to CONUS *Tubus Logo Evo*—hard to see in the photo with Brooks panniers mounted to it but I purchased it new, it only has 100 miles on it. Includes all mounting hardware. I've decided black racks do not look good on this bike, so I'm going to do some VO polished racks instead. Asking $100 shipped to CONUS *Salsa Down Under Front Rack*—this is the split style rack. Re: [RBW] Loving my Atlantis...let me count the ways
I have spent the past couple of seasons searching for an alternative to drop bars. I started with the classics (Albas and Moustache) but found these to be too wide or too convoluted. After lots of experimenting, I finally settled on classic Porteur bars, set up Moustache-style. http://m.flickr.com/#/photos/34156114@N05/9146262436/ I am using both the Grand Bois Elysees bar and the Velo Orange Porteur bar, both in the flipped orientation. I have the straight section angled down about 10 deg, and the brake hoods are sloped down to provide the lever location/sweep that feels natural for my hands. There are some very subtle differences between these bars, and I like the curve on the VO model just a tad more, but I am comfortable with either one. Porteur-style bars like these typically are set up with reverse brake levers or MTB levers and some sort of a thumb shifter, all of which limits the available hand positions. But the two models mentioned here take normal road bike brake levers and bar-end shifters, leaving the bar's sweep available for a range of hand positions. I also find that the forward position of the brake levers feels more secure and comfortable on a downhill. I 've also been thinking about this off and on. I've used black electrical tape down the underside of the down tube (works great), and clear packing tape along the underside of the fender leading to the dynamo tailight located there (works terribly poorly, of course; need something better but haven't bothered to try the helicopter tape/100 MPH tape that I've read about). Re: [RBW] About to start experimenting with centerpulls
I particularly like the super integrated result when your frame builder uses Paul-specific posts, so there is one fewer layer of tolerance between bushing sleeves. That may very well be the direction I go, eventually On Monday, October 14, 2013 2:10:40 PM UTC-7, Matthew J wrote: No experience with bolt on center pulls. Would not say braze on center pulls are better than dual pivot side pulls or mini-vees, both of which I've found to do an excellent job. Braze on center pulls do have a very integrated appearance and serve well. On Monday, October 14, 2013 2:18:04 PM UTC-5, Bill Lindsay wrote: Small update. Also, I now have a front rack. All good points. BUT..I hate how the arms tilt inward from the pivots. The brake pads cannot hit flush on the brake track. BOO! This means I need a wider rim. I have 19mm wide Mavic Open Pros now, but things would be a lot more squared-up with a 23 or 24mm rim. The way I prefer wide tires, this needed to happen anyway. For example, I've seen many A Homer Hilsens using Silver Sidepulls, and I've seen many A Homer Hilsens using Paul Racer centerpulls. I'd love to hear somebody say I took off the Silver Sidepulls and installed Paul Racers and the result was . Or, I've seen many Roadeos with Tektro 539s, and a few with Paul Racer M. I wanted to see if anybody specifically swapped from dual pivot to a quality centerpull and thought it changed anything. That's what I'm doing, and I'll certainly share what my observations are. Anyway, I did it partially out of curiosity about centerpulls. I also did it because I wanted a cleanly installed small front rack. I hated running P-clamps with a Marks rack on this bike. I also did it because I think it will open up the fender area. I also did it because I was/am inspired by Sumehra's custom mixte with braze on centerpull brakes. If I love centerpulls, then braze on centerpulls on a custom might make it onto my bucket list. 1. If braking is a wash, and I gain the use of a proper handlebar bag, and improve fender clearance, that's a big win 2. If braking performance is better, and the rack breaks under my handlebar bag, and fender clearance is worse, then I won't know what to do 3. If braking performance is worse, and the rack breaks, then I'll whine like a baby I'm investing a lot in making this setup really as nice as I can. [RBW] Pittsburgh night ride
Nice ride report. The local bike club has a weekly dinner ride on Wednesday usually which is pretty much year round barring heavy rain, snow, etc.in which everybody runs lights, blinkies, etc.and there's a few of us that do our own thing with evening after work/after dark rides with options stops on the return at local breweries, etc. Fun times. Andy - very nice. Looks like a beautiful night. On Wed, Oct 16, 2013 at 7:53 AM, ascpgh asc@gmail.com wrote: A very pleasant group I've ridden with every Tuesday, April through September has now gone dormant for the dark seasons. Other recent insights include the growing value of the waterfront * mileage,* which had been avoided as the uncomfortable place where industry was. Redevelopment has been managed to value those massive tracts and many bikeway miles have been established along them. The Great Allegheny Passage starts at the fountain in Point State Park and runs upstream along the city side of Monongahela (*Mon*) River, crossing the Hot Metal Bridge and continuing to the town of McKeesport where it picks up the Youghiogheny (*Yock*) River along which it runs into the Allegheny Mountains toward Cumberland, MD then Washington DC via the CO Canal towpath; 325 miles. Too much for tonight. We descended Sycamore Street (part of the old Thrift Drug Classic and The Dirty Dozenhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Dozen_(bicycle_competition)) to Station Square, crossed the very decorative Smithfield Street Bridge to downtown and the jail trail, and back to the start where several of us retired around the corner for a pleasant post ride refreshment and conversation. Nice to keep the positive vibe of the ride group going into dark part of the year. Sure is a glowing plug for lighting, I know it takes little provocation to spill praise for mine. Re: [RBW] 71Hilsen on eBay
Not at all. Of course there are far worse things to be sad about, but if that were our only guiding principle for emotion we'd be unemotional about much that we, in fact, invest emotion in -- double top tubes, pro as well as con, for that matter -- and this list would not exist. I admired Rivendell from the beginning for bucking style trends -- steel when the only good material for a frame was aluminum or titanium; friction when indexing was the only game; long rear-centers and shorter front-centers compared to crit geometries; frames that take wider tires and fenders and racks; and above all Grant's signature feel and handling qualities. He said himself, long ago (I signed up as a member in1994) that Rivendell was product driven, not market driven. Now I don't think Rivendel today is market driven -- I think it drives its own little market, in fact -- but I have seen a trend toward style, albeit idiosyncratic, over function -- tweed mudflaps, dual top tubes on smaller frames, and so forth. So, you say: go elsewhere. But I have emotion invested in Rivendell -- I've owned 5 over the years, not to mention huge quantities of other gear -- and therefore I feel sad when I see what appears to me to be unreasonable designs. So, I believe I do have a right to my own feelings and opinions about Rivendell -- long may it reign! Re: [RBW] 71Hilsen on eBay
I don't know if the Double TT is market driven, it seems to be a pretty divisive issue. Far be it for me to deny anyone their feelings about anything, especially Rivendell. But if the market is responding to what they are doing they would be fools to not jump on some of the trends. I would hate to think that its like a vacuum in Walnut Creek. I thin its like 51 flavors, something for everyone. I could personally take or leave the double TT, I am not smarts enough about geometry and planing and whatnot to know if it hurts or helps. I love the way my 56cm Bombadil rides, dunno if it would ride the same with one TT. It would be nice to offer people a choice, however, but that is probably cost prohibitive. [RBW] ISO 1 Bar-end Cork Grip
I have an Alfine setup on my bike and wanted to go to cork grips. I have a pair of regular non-barends cork grips from Rivendell. I am throwing out a net to see if anyone has one bar-end style grip they would want to trade/sell. I know its a long shot but I thought I would give it a go before I buy two pairs to get the one pair I want. Thanks either way. Patrick, Though I'd try to disguise the lower tt as a pump or somthing, Isn't that style? Your style. The beauty is that you have a choice. but I have seen a trend toward style, albeit idiosyncratic, over function -- tweed mudflaps, dual top tubes on smaller frames, and so forth Sad about style over function the two the two can be mutual, as far as I can tell Riv does a pretty good job of offering an alternative to the myriad of choices out there and as far as idiosyncratic, thank heaven for different...and sometimes a design even from the most heralded can fall short... I bow down to a mistake, for from doing thus I learn. Re: [RBW] Loving my Atlantis...let me count the ways
It may be that I'm morphing again, and should have trusted my gut originally. I really enjoyed the VO Porteur bars on my AHH after not liking a set of 46cm Noodles, but I've since settled on 42cm Noodles for that bike. However, I have the Albastaches on my Hunqa, and really like the full-time upright and forward brake positions. I am also losing my interest in the extreme variation the Boscos give (on my backup commuter). I am currently planning on stowing those for my next foray into cruisers or my elderly years, and getting back to the Porteur bars that are just so right. They are narrow, have at least 3 hand positions, and do at least 100k without hand pain. Sticking with the Noodles for the long rides, however (over 200k). Brian Seattle, WA On Wednesday, October 16, 2013 6:31:22 AM UTC-7, Tom Matchak wrote: I have spent the past couple of seasons searching for an alternative to drop bars.
