[RBW] POLL: You like Gray or black housing for your Rivendell? Ferrules?

Green housing on the Quickbeam. I've only ever had silver ferrules, but I 
suppose brass would be nice. 
Black is classic. Gray would look good on a silver frame. I've used red and 
orange where (in)appropriate.

Wipe the chain enough to lay a ruler up to it, line the zero mark up on a 
pin center and see where the 12 mark hits relative the nearest pin. Sage 
advice is replace the chain if 1/16 stretch is detected. A field-expedient 
that is less precise is to pull the middle of the chain wrapped around your 
big chainring away from the teeth and see how far it goes; a little is 
fine, halfway off the tooth not so good, over a tooth is excessive.  This 
demonstration includes wear of chainring teeth and should be followed by 
more careful assessment. 

Wear beyond 1/16 eats chainrings and cassette cogs at a faster rate. At 
1/8 stretch, the drivetrain degrades in finer functions in normal use and 
begin to misbehave like chain suck when Just Riding Along (term of art in 
bike repair).

If the chain is beyond the normal length between its pins, it doesn't lay 
well around the tooth profile of the chainrings. Wrapped around a granny 
gear, the stretched chain is forced into a smaller set of tooth gaps by 
riding a little bit high on each tooth provided you are really easing along 
on the pedals. The force generated by the granny ring sinks those links 
farther onto the non-matching teeth beyond being freely engaging. So as the 
chainring rotates from the top where it is pulling the run of chain off the 
cassette cog, it is creating a binding fit of the chain onto itself to the 
point of sticking to the ring until knocked off by your frame. 

Continued riding will erode the teeth of rings and cogs.

granny gear, but generally only the bottom 2-3.

For me if the Hunqapillar came in a 56 I would have bought it over my
bombadil, not to take anything away from an awesome bike but the hunq had
better clearances and was a steal when it was first released. Not that it's
overpriced now, but at 1500 I had one on order at Harris before realizing
it was just too small in the TT and the 58 was gonna have negative
standover with the tires I would run on it.  I was steered towards the 56
Sam which I am sure is an awesome bike but I was looking to run big rubber,
just my take on the whole thing.

a few weeks lest the scents send me down the mountain. Grin.

As far as stinking, I read a National Geographic article in which the crew 
described how before reaching the South American village they stopped at 
the river to take their first bath in weeks. The medicine man wouldn't go 
near them because they stunk. I knew exactly what he was talking about 
and couldn't stop laughing. Stink is in the nose of the besniffer. Grin.

I put white on my blue/white Giordana when I tuned her up this year.  Looks
great on that classic racer.  But I used the grey housing on my Riv, and
black on my Schwinn KOM.  I like the grey because it doesn't stand out but
looks nice.

I really, really really like my (discontinued) Acorn tubular bag on my 
go-fast bike - I can outfit it either for my tubular or clincher wheelset 
(I keep either supply staged in gallon ziplocs)

It carries everything I might need to get home on a bad day and still room 
for car keys and cell phone, etc - just no room for a beer.

One advantage is that they clear rear tires better than transverse bags.
Even the Junior drags on the rear tire of my size M Fargo -- mostly solved
by a cardboard stiffener -- while a wedge of similar size would clear the
tire better. And, as others have said, no rack and certainly no loops
required.

That said, if Carradice bags were better known and positioned in the
marketplace differently, they would probably be popular as light off road
touring baggage.

was dirty. I installed a device to prevent chainsuck; forget the name.

Noticed that Riv builds have gray housing with brass ferrules. Was wondering 
why they use that combo.

 Lacking any hard data, we can only play with the numbers.  3 mm is
25% of 12 mm, which is probably the average difference in bottom
bracket height between cyclocross and road bike bottom bracket
heights. People have argued that road bikes noticably turn better than
cyclocross bikes due to this difference, so perhaps the princess on 4
peas would notice the difference!

Salsa and Surly have been doing the rigid MTB for a number of years.  The 
Fargo and Ogre both look like perfect bikes for off-road touring, just as a 
Hunqapillar of Bomba would.  I'm really interested int he new Surly ECR 
with 29 x 3 tires.  It has all the braze on's for racks or can be run with 
frame bags. Low BB ( like Atlantis low at 80mm) kinda like a LHT for pure 
off-road camping/touring.

Biggest thing, tire size;   smaller Hunq's are 26, the 54 and up are 
700c;  the Bomba is 650b, until you get up to a 60, then it switches to 
700c too.

My Bomba is a 56, in 650b;  if I went w/ a Hunq, it'd be a 54, in 700c...

I think one of the biggest advantages to the Revelate bags for offroad 
touring, is that when you shift your weight way back, such as going down a 
steep singletrack, your legs clear. With a transverse bag, you can only 
throw your weight back until your legs hit. They also don't get hung up on 
that trailside tree limb you failed to see, like my panniers did once, 
sending me over the bars (Disclaimer: I use a Rivendell Adam transverse bag 
on a daily basis and have not owned a Revelate as I don't do any extreme 
off road touring). If you are planning on doing a lot of singletrack 
riding, I'd go for the Revelate bags.

[RBW] Planning 72 hours in Marin

Just took possession of a new Surly Trucker Deluxe which I had Harris 
Cyclery build up with a mix of Riv-ish and otherwise practical parts 
(moustache bars, silver shifters, the new IRD 8 speed cassette mated to an 
XT 44-32-22 crank), and while I don't have yet the tools, couplers, travel 
case, or technical ability to break it apart for travel, I'm itching to get 
out there and use it.  Have a week off coming up and nothing planned, so I 
bought a spur of the moment ticket to SFO on Virgin, which claims to let 
bikes under 23 kg fly for free (it's nothing near a weight weenie build, 
but I think I'm safe).  The plan is, put the bike on the plane in a nashbar 
travel bag, and then put the bag into storage and cycle from the airport to 
the Golden Gate bridge with a special focus on staying alive in city 
traffic, then hit a mix of road and trails once over the bridge.  Tentative 
itinerary is to head up Mt. Tam and stay at the West Point Inn on the 12th, 
up the Bolinas Ridge to Olema and back down to Wildcat campground on 13th, 
and then down to the headlands and Hawk campground on the 14th (have 
confirmed that the first two have availability, have to call to see about 
Hawk but my sense is that fall weekdays are not peak period for camping in 
Marin).  I'm taking on the red eye back to Boston the night of the 15th, so 
plan to slowly make my way back to the airport over the course of the last 
day.  I know there's people here with more experience in Marin, so I'm open 
to suggestions on route, and if anyone wants to join for part or all of the 
ride, I'd welcome the company ( be advised, though, am fat and slow).

Mountain bikes are fun.  Take a look at some of SOMA's offerings.  They're
one of the least expensive brands that use frame size specific tubing in
their builds.  I really like my Juice (set up as a singlespeed) and almost
bought a B-line.

The Revelate bags are designed to be minimalist and fit mountain bikes that
don't really have any allowance for touring gear.  (no braze ons,
suspension complications, etc).  They're also designed to be streamlined
and out of the way when trail riding, utilizing the dead spaces of the
frame (main triangle, under the bars, behind the saddle, etc)

One possible minor benefit: Lesser likelihood of thigh contact? 

Never used a Revelate, but unless my Lowsaddle Longflap is packed pert near 
solid, it has a tendency to get a little floppy at the corners and bow in 
towards the back of the saddle. 

The thigh contact isn't a deal breaker, but if I had a choice in the 
matter, it wouldn't be happening.

Yep, I didn't mention it , but thigh rubbing is another non negotiable 
for me.  For this reason I even ditched the Banana Bag I once had, I rigged 
it so it wouldn't rub, but then it would sway because I couldn't get the 
leather strap tight enough around the seat stays ... lol.  The Revelate 
bags are like the Banana bag embiggened and* perfected* !

there's grey and then there's grey.  there is a classy dark grey, like dura ace 
and xtr housing.  there is the stuff that was closer to clear, where you could 
see the coiled metal underneath.  bridgestones came with that stuff out of the 
box.  flat pale grey can be nice, and that was one of the campy options.

i usually just go black, though

links. Whoever mentioned those super-big 3 tires for off-road, yeah.
The Krampus and the ECR look so cool.

One thing I hadn't appreciated about the Revelate-style bags is that
saddlebags that aren't any wider than me are not going to be a problem
*when riding*. But they might be a problem *when pushing*. I almost
never push my Atlantis when I'm touring-- that's what low gears are
for-- but off-road, I'd definitely be spending plenty of time
hike-a-biking. Rear panniers get in the way of my legs when pushing,
and wide saddlebags are somewhat in the way as well.

I hike-a-bike quite a bit, with the large SaddleSack and sometimes with the 
TourSacks under it. Neither has been an issue for me.

[RBW] Atlantis is sold - thank you!

[RBW] FS: NOS 55cm Bleriot Frameset

  I've got a new, never ridden 55cm Bleriot frameset for sale.  It's been 
hanging out in the shop for awhile just wanting to be built.  Well, I 
decided to give up the ghost and let it be someone else's project.  It has 
a Tange headset pressed in it.  I got the frame like that.  A few paint 
niks here and there.  Nothing that you wouldn't expect from years of 
knocking around a shop.  I would like $700 plus actual shipping.  I might 
also be interested in trading for a 66cm+ Rivendell or other high quality
